Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder of the mind. The disorder often causes progressive memory loss, as well as robbing those who suffer the disease of their intellectual purpose. Alzheimer’s disease runs along the course and aside dementias. Dementias are a cognitive deterioration, as well as intellectual decaying of the mind. The disorder progressively works to deteriorate the intellectual purpose, robbing the soul of memory. Dementias often occurs while the brain is functioning, i.e. controlling progress, or movement, etc, which the senses are detained.

Alzheimer’s often targets the older generation. In fact, the older generation often experiences at one time various disorders of the mind, including Alzheimer. Technically, Alzheimer’s disease is a medical disorder, since it causes dementias. The degenerative illness affects the brain, usually late in one’s life. ... Read more

British Intelligence operative Tara Chace is accustomed to working in the shadows cast by world governments, but when one of the Queen's most affluent subjects is blackmailed by a French conglomerate trying to nab an important business contract, Tara's espionage turns to the corporate variety. Little do the blackmailers know, the sex and lies they captured on videotape involved one of Chace's school-time friends, giving the agent extra incentive to foil the company and protect the interests of the Crown. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific blackmail/spy story with great art!
So far British agent Tara Chase, the heroine of the Queen & Country comic book series, has been settling cases in the Balkans and the Middle East.
This one hits closer to home.
The father of an old friend is being blackmailed with a sex tape starring his daughter and a Frenchman with more than just a pretty face. Whereas she's in love he's in it for the money.
England and France are fighting for a multi billion business deal. France does the tape, England counters with Tara. You can guess the end of the story. Her majesty always gets it her way. But you'll be surprised at the twists and turns Greg Rucka built in. I also like that the French that is spoken is authentic and without mistakes. A thorough job.
Jason Alexander's art is fabulous. He changes perspectives all the time, much like a moving camera (as in Domino, NYPD Blue etc.) which fits perfectly to tell this fast paced tale.
His thin lines and edgy sketches sometimes remind me of his friend Kent Williams with whom he shares a studio, or British spy comics from the 70's. Yet Jason Alexander has made this his very own.
You should definitely check out his other work f.e. Empty Zone or The Tower.
As to Greg Rucka, fabulous, as always. Also highly recommended: his Queen & Country novels

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun spy-thriller graphic novel
The fourth story in the Tara Chase spy saga finds author Greg Rucka teamed up with a fine new artist, one J. Alexander, whose gauzy, fine-line black-and-white work recalls Gray Morrow's work in the early 1970s -- very classy and compelling. The plotline is a welcome detour from the Islamic-themed stories that seem poised to dominate the series. Here, the bad guys are -- zut alors! -- the French government, a fine twist for a book devoted to the British intelligence service.A sex scandal looms and Ms. Chase is called in to handle it; the story zips along at a healthy clip and will hold your attenton from start to finish.A good, entertaining read...You won't be able to put it down, and will be eager for the next installment!

5-0 out of 5 stars John Rogers says...
From the introduction:

"[T]he world really is won by the inch.People need to read these stories. They need to understand it's the long game that counts.Every day goes by, and the world burns, and all Tara [Chace] and her ilk can do is keep the flames away from the front door one more morning.Every time they do that, it's a victory. You can't win the War on Terror.You.Can.Not.You can just win today's battle."

That's all.The story in this volume of the ongoing series is more personal, but every bit as difficult as Tara's other missions. And the message is still the same: you can't escape evil, but you can fight it-- and that's the only way to keep from being overwhelmed by it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Always use call block if you have to be stupid
"I know what you did last summer " - that was the feel of the thing I was tasting here, because the plotline was something I could see being said over and over again in a mantra-like form. Here, a few teenagers decide to make some calls and to rile up a few people, only to find that calling without using *67 is not a good thing. It lets someone trace you, the pranking superstar, and when you accuse someone of doing something by saying something like this it might just be the wrong person.
checkmate - people die.

As far as a story goes, I'm not going to be too hard on this because I knew what I was getting into after reading the back of the book. It was concise and it told me that it was exactly what i thought it could be, but i thought I would want it anyhow. I did, incidentally, and liked the way it fit me. It had this feeling to it that seemed like a bad dream being played out and, as I delved deeper, I thought of people drowning in ignorant actions.
Still, the action itself might not have been the killing field being set into motion at first and you are left with that question: "Are these targets targets, a joke being aimed at friends, or something else?"
The answer comes calling back, crawling back, and I liked the revealing moment.

THis is NOT for everyone - in truth, I would not say for you to buy it because you know thew ay it is going to go. you don't know details, however, and those are nice to tinker with. The killings, the people; all of it is inside of a story that you don't know and may overestimate your knowing within.
So, if you wan to try it out, look into it and think on the product, knowing it is not espensive, can feed a ghorror habit, and is a Dark Horse creation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well drawn horror
It gets off to a familiar-sounding start: a bunch of teenagers pulls some silly trick they known they're not supposed to. Then, at midnight, a faceless man finds their little group, out partying. A few days later, Pam is gone, and Tommy is the only suspect ...

Perhaps the story's put together from well-worn bits, but the artwork and the telling come across as crisp and new. Alexander's artwork, in ink and watercolor, carries the dark, edgy mood of Richardson's script beautifully, down to the very last panel. If you missed the story when it came out in monthlies, you haven't missed out completely. In fact, you might like it even better when you can see the whole story, all at once - or is it the whole story?

Excerpt: Alexander Everett (1921-2005) was a British self-improvement and personal development consultant. He was the founder of the company Mind Dynamics, and author of the motivational books The Genius Within You and Inward Bound. Everett's coursework and teachings had an influence on the human potential movement. Though Mind Dynamics only existed for a few years, it greatly influenced many other forms of companies and self-improvement groups known as Large Group Awareness Training. After Mind Dynamics folded due to the death of its co-owner, William Penn Patrick, and due to investigations on its parent company, Holiday Magic, by the United States government on allegations of pyramid schemes, Everett formed another course called Inward Bound, which he taught in the United States, Europe and Asia. Born in England in 1921, Everett was initially inspired by Aldous Huxley's book The Perennial Philosophy. Everett became involved with Christian Science, the Unity School of Christianity, and Rosicrucianism. He also traveled the world in a quest for spirituality and education, visiting Greece, India, and Egypt. Everett also studied Theosophy with Rudolf Steiner. He later settled down in Britain for a while, forming a preparatory school, Pendragon School at Bexhill-on-Sea, in 1950 in Sussex, England. While teaching at the school in Sussex, Everett contracted polio, and was told by his physicians that he would never walk again. Everett believed that he healed himself using the Unity School of Christianity's "Prayer of Faith", by Hannah More Kohaus. So I put forth the truth in these pages, for you who seek as I have sought. I am not some godless beast who stalks beneath the dark grandeur of sanctity. I am the grandeur. I am sanctified - The Testament of Longinus

Lancea Sanctum includes:

An in-depth look at the history, philosophy and modern operations of the Lancea Sanctum, the holiest order of the Damned

Explorations of Sanctified Requiems and the roles pious predators and monstrous paladins play in the Danse Macabre and the World of Darkness

Guidelines and inspiration for Kindred of every clan, including new bloodlines, new Disciplines and horrific new miracles of Theban Sorcery ... Read more

Customer Reviews (5)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great breadth, slightly lacking in depth
Unlike other covenants, the Lancea Sanctum is primarily a religious (not political) organization. This book goes a long way toward filling in the culture and history of the covenant, but is a little lacking in the beliefs facet.

I found this to be one of the more interesting and helpful covenant books, having read all of them with the exception of VII. The variety of factions and creeds presented help in creating Sanctified characters who are differentiated, and keep the covenant from becoming the monolith/stereotype it might appear to be initially.

The first chapter gives a history that mirrors Christianity closely enough to warrant skipping, but short and creative enough that I found it worth the time. Chapter two gives a rough idea of the contents of the Testament of Longinus, the creeds of worship, and titles/positions in the covenant. The most interesting part, though, is a description of various rites and optional systems with mechanical bonuses to accompany them. The bloodlines and factions presented in chapter three are a highlight of the book as well, and the requisite chapter on Disciplines and Theban Sorcery is sufficient (26 pages). This roughly doubles the current number of available Theban Sorcery rituals and provides a bit of theological perspective on them.

As much as I like this book, however, I came out of my initial read with little sense of how the covenant's beliefs come into practice when dealing with mortals. I got all the same stuff from the core book: Yes, they believe damnation has purpose. Yeah, they want to be apex predators. But how is this all that different from Belial's Brood, then? Is it just a more self-flagellating version? This book didn't really answer those questions for me. It wasn't until I subsequently read the PDF-exclusive Testament of Longinus that I truly felt I understood this covenant.

All told, this was a good covenant book for fleshing out the Sanctum as a group of vampires, and the systems included in this volume are great. If you want to increase the presence and realism of the covenant in your chronicles, or need systems for a Sanctum coterie, this book fits the bill. But if you intend to get deep into the philosophical nuances that are part of the fun of playing Sanctified characters, I can't recommend the additional purchase of the Testament of Longinus PDF strongly enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars FIRST OF THE VAMPIRE: REQUIEM COVENANT BOOKS
LANCEA SANCTUM is a sourcebook for the roleplaying game VAMPIRE: THE REQUIEM by White Wolf. It is meant for both players and storytellers, to provide information on the vampire covenant and religion, the Lancea Sanctum. The covenant is one of the most important groupings in VAMPIRE: THE REQUIEM, because membership reflects a philosophical choice by the characters rather than the vagaries of circumstance.Of all the covenants, the Lancea Sanctum maybe the most important because it will likely be the first the charactersencounter and the most different from their initial impression.

Many, if not most, players will have played the introductory scenario "Mary's Childe" and the Lancea Sanctum is an integral part of that scenario. It is also likely to be misunderstood; the Lancea Sanctum borrows heavily from Catholic imagery and rituals, but demands that its adherents admit their damnation and act accordingly. It is a vampire religion, that worships God by putting the fear of Him into mankind.A book like LANCEA SANCTUM provides useful information to both players and storytellers on this misunderstood but pervasive group.

The introductory fiction for LANCEA SANCTUM is very interesting - the paper is very distinctive, meant to resemble vellum (I think), and the font is made to resemble illuminated script. It also does an excellent job of setting the mood for the covenant; religious fanaticism and monstrous power. The first chapter describes the history of the covenant, specifically its founding and spread throughout the world.Of course, it is written from the perspective of the covenant itself, which gives each covenant book its own flavor and allows competing history with no "canon" that must be followed.

The second chapter is a large one and deals with night-to-night unlife in the covenant.I felt that this is one of the most useful aspects of the VAMPIRE supplements. What motivates an undead monster? What do they do to fill their time? What do they believe in?Thinking about these questions seaprates the roleplaying of a vampire and roleplaying a superhero who gets bad sunburn.LANCEA SANCTUM dewcribes the contents of the vampire religion's holy book, "The Testament of Longinus", the different creeds that define denominations within the Lancea Sanctum, offices, titles, and positions within the covenant, and how each clan can serve within the covenant. It also lists rites, rituals, and holy days for the Lancea Sanctum (which if nothing else, give the PCs the sense that there is something going on in the world besides their personal issues).

The third chapter describes how vampires relate to each other within the covenant; how new vampires are recruited and inducted, and how neonates, ancillae, and elders serve the religion. The following chapters describe factions (which one might expect, given the splintering of real-world religions), bloodlines (which aren't spectacular), bloodline disciplines, Theban Sorcery rituals, and sample characters. The Theban Sorcery section is very interesting, as it suggests that new rituals are hidden throughout the world, and that understanding of the symbolism is provided when the need arises. It's an interesting interpretation.

Overall, I thought LANCEA SANCTUM to be the most useful of the covenant books, in that it described something that is difficult to generalize from human experience (vampire religion) but that has specific and well-known attributes (dogma, rituals, holy days, etc.)Every PC will probably encounter the Lancea Sanctum as a backdrop of midnight masses and vampire evangelists.PCs don't even have to belong to the covenant to go to a mass, which allows even greater exposure to the material in this book.

The only real downside to LANCEA SANCTUM is how closely it apes Christianity and historical development.Besides the main Lancea Sanctum denomination, which models Catholicism, there is an Anglican branch, a Baptist branch, and "Unitarian" branch, a Jewish branch, and an Islamic branch. Why not just have competing covenants based on Judaism and Islam, instead of shoehorning them into the "religious" covenant? Why would vampires reinvent Anglicanism? Also, the "Testament of Longinus" is clearly modeled after the New Testament, with gospels, apostolic acts, epistles, and an apocalypse. It comes across as parody rather than convergent evolution. However, these points don't detract too heavily from a great roleplaying supplement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lancea Sanctum adds too little.
Lancea Sanctum presents the religious Covenant of vampires dedicated to preying on humanity and fulfilling the role God has chosen for them. A lot of detail is presented on the structure of the Lancea Sanctum, from the role a typical ancillae plays to how the Covenant relates to other World of Darkness entities. Factions, Bloodlines, Disciplines, and new Thebean Sorcery rituals are included to add mechanical support to this broad take on one of the oldest vampiric organizations.

Unfortunately, Lancea Sanctum speaks far too much in vague generalities and adds little new and interesting material to this Covenant. The rites, prayers, and roles observed by members are simplistic modifications of existing church roles that any Storyteller could easily invent. The history of the Covenant starts out interesting, but quickly degrades into a historical survey of questionable use. Finally, the new game mechanics (Bloodlines, Disciplines, etc.) are sparse and largely flavorless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, Not great either though
I am a member of the Camarilla and that is why I only gave it three stars, for none camarilla members I would give it four.
First of all, the book is wonderful for making a character for the sanctum or running a campaign around it.I was a little disappointed with the Theban sorcery section, white wolf behind well white wolf decided against putting the Theban Sorcery rituals from nomads and coteries in it so the chapter really isn't complete.White wolf cares to damn much about money and not enough about gaming, but to be fair that greed is how the new system came about and it is far superior for player versus player style games. The reason I lowered a star is that all the good rituals past two dots are high approval for camarilla games, and that urks me.
The Bloodlines in this book are horrible. The Ventrue bloodline is decent but its extra discipline is no fun.The Meket get a blood line that should be a flaw in and of itself and the other three clans get to piggy back on the Davea line that although the Davea are the parent clan anyone can join.
Skimping on the cheese aside, this books does have an extremely good insight into the inter workings and view points of the Lancea sanctum, and if you would enjoy a view into those working this is a good book for you.If you are the type that wants new bloodlines and extra cheese you may be disappointed by this book.
Also the artwork in this book is awesome in my mind.
Oh and before I forget I would like to send a message to white wolf because I am sure someone from the group looks at these review; PUT A FREAKING INDEX IN YOUR SUPPLEMENT BOOKS, YOU CHARGE ENOUGH FOR THEM YOU CAN AFFORD THE EXTRY THREE OR FOUR SHEETS OF PAPER YOU CHEAP CHILDREN OF UNWED PARENTS!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars First covenant book released, but an incredibly strong book
This book details the covenant Lancea Sanctum- its history, the reasons why Kindred join it, the roles of the clans in the covenant, how one joins, its relation to other factions in the World of Darkness, and various in-covenant factions, bloodlines, and heresies.

I actually delayed buying this book because of the heavily Christian flavor to the book, so I was very surprised when I actually went to my local game store and thumbed through the book.It presents a truly diverse and changing (as much as anything Kindred-related can be "changing") covenant with as many iterations as their are Bishophrics (essentially parishes, each city or area with a different one.)

Get this book even if you are turned off by the apparent Christian flavor of the book. You won't be disappointed- there is something in this book for every player or storyteller. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant classic!
The title story, The crooked man, is perhaps the best Hellboy story i've ever read. It's right up there with "The corpse" and "Conquerer worm" and might even top these two. I can't remember the last time I read a comic this athmospheric and creepy. Mignola is drawing heavy on the Appalchian folklore here, sending our red hero into witch country. Richard Corbens artwork is outstanding - his special feel for lighting and detail creates a choking eerie athmosphere and each picture tells it's own little story. A truly outstanding collaboration!!

Hellboy has been a long way from home for a while now. On those trips he's run into a lot of odd fellows. Here, we have a few of those tales, along with a few tales that are shorts and haven't been included in anything before. Personally, I thought the shorts were great, and having the insight into the process that Mignola utilizes is also great. In one of the stories, for example, he explains how he uses a statue of Moloch in the story and prepares a little clay statue so he can see all the angles. I like that. I also like the things you find out when you read the forward he puts in. In the mole, for example, you find out that it is based on an experience he had and on some "itch you can't scratch." Intersting how the mind works. Equally interesting are the people that inspire the tales.

The Crooked Man is a tale of witchcraft and a personal journey we are witnessing, set in the backwoods of the Apps. The Crooked Man is freaky and some of the story is freaky as well, making it bizarre and interesting at the same time. When you look at it, look at the way Mignola's influences shine through in the tale - there's an area in the book that tells you all about it. if you already know Manly Wade Wellman's work, you can envision what is going on here.

They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships pits Abe and Hellboy against a certain body and head that want to be reunited and that are not exactly the friendliest cast to walk the Earth. The way the art comes together with the tales of this person is great, taking all of the things that people have said over the years and putting them in the story. Honestly, I thought the subject of this was a good one because he's someone that people have heard odd things about - as a kid those things used to creep me out.

In the Chapel of Moloch is a great story because it goes back to that true Hellboy feel for me. You have a painter that wants to do creepy work and that gets his own foreign studio/ chapel to work in. his partner sets him up and exhibition, too, and then leaves him to his work. When he returns, however, he finds the work undone and something built in the chapel that frightens him. and when Hellboy comes in, you know it gets worse.

The Mole is just a short that is informative in soem way because it dwells on the fears. Even Hellboy has them, that's what the story says, and we know what he has haunting his mind.

All in all, this is a great collection. You don't have to be schooled in anything to enjoy it but you don't have to be a novice to walk right up and play ball. Its good stuff - and it is something to divert from the massive story going on right now. Hellboy has great things inside and hopefully people see them all. I personally think this deserves a solid five.

I love the collections of short (or shorter) stories, and this is another great addition to the collection!

This book is the perfect graphic novel, and what I mean by that is (a) they've raised the quality of the graphics for it.It's not your run-of-the-mill semi-graphic novel, like so many of them seem to be these days, don't they.

And (b) it's not at bottom still a comic-book story either, as so many of them are.And I might say, if you don't mind my doing so, that one of the reasons I like the writing of it so much is that I'm a bit spiritual myself, and I can vouch for the truth of about 3/4 of this story (the rest isn't necessarily untrue, I just don't know about it) (and I plan to keep it that way, but you can't fight fate, especially when you're dealing with someone so tricky).

While we're on the subject, I was reading 'R. Crumb Draws the Blues' the other night, and that's got some moments in it that have to do with powers being derived from the dark side of spirituality (African voodoo). And it's non-fiction.It's interesting (always nice when someone else gets the information for you!).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Crooked Man is my favorite Hellboy story
The Crooked Man is a wonderful, self-contained gem of a story. You absolutely don't have to read volumes 1-9 before you read this. This is a great place to start. The story is set in Appalachia. I'm a Tennessean, Scots-Irish, and I love bluegrass. The story captures something really cool and unsettling about Appalachian folklore and witchcraft, seeming authentic w/o making fun of the stupid hillbillies. It's a jewel. ... Read more
