Product Description
Kim Singleton was born into a family with more problems than the average. One of six siblings, she experienced unthinkable acts of abuse at the hands of the people closest to her. No, there was nothing normal about her childhood. No dollhouses and games of hide and seek. Instead she learned quickly how "grown-ups" had fun, having her first homosexual encounter at age 6. Afflicted by what Kim called her, 'generational curse' she dove head first into a life of danger, lust, fast money and fast women. Kim was living life on the edge until one Christmas when GOD delivers her a gift that would change her outlook on life forever. Having been raised in the Word, Kim knew that she had to change her life and like most fallen souls returned to her roots, the church. Free from the demons that ruled her life and back in the Word, Kim is finally back on the right track. Looking for honest work and faithfully attending church she is surprised to see the same demons that bound her before lurking in the one place she felt safe...her church. ... Read more

Product Description

Published to coincide with their first major exhibition in the United Kingdom, Al & Al examines the work of one the most exciting duos working in video art.

Al & Al’s spectacular computer-generated videos radically re-appropriate contemporary pop culture through an inventive use of celebrity icons, live action performance and animation special effects. The exhibition features a new, large-scale commission developed through the artists’ residency at the historically charged Edge Hill railway station, which will be shown alongside two existing works originally made for television. Al & Al is the first book to contextualise, the psycho-sexual and social consequences of technology explored in their work, and position their radical practice within a critical and art historical context.

From the author: Dieting expectancies are cognitive variables pertaining to anticipated outcomes individuals expect to obtain from dieting to lose weight. This investigation examined the factor structure of dieting expectancies in an adolescent population, age 10-18, and tested the ability of factors to distinguish among types of dieter, diet pill user, and vomiter groups. Emerging from a principal components analysis were five reliable expectancy factors: Social Confidence, Social Approval, Self-Worth, Positive Performance, and Negative Consequences. Results indicate dieting expectancies and gender are important in distinguishing among adolescents who engage in different dieting practices. Gender and Self-Worth were particularly important in distinguishing frequent dieters from nondieters. Social Approval was best at separating frequent dieters from occasional dieters, diet pills users from nonusers, and vomiters from nonvomiters. (J Sch Health. 1993;63(4):176-181)

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This novel has much going for it, most notably good writing and a likable protagonist, Sara. Unfortunately, Sara is surrounded by far less likable characters. It's not clear what she ever saw in Mark, the husband she declines to follow to Washington and soon cuts loose. Aaron, her new love interest, comes across as manipulative and creepy. Sara's sister is so tough and sour that we're relieved when she leaves for Africa with the man she loves -- not because we're happy for her, but simply because we're glad to be rid of her. Sara's superiors at work are little more than caricatures of soulless businessmen. Reading _Pearl City Control Theory_ is like going to a party thrown by someone you really like . . . and then getting stuck all evening talking to one unpleasant guest after another.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Novel Look at Life and Relationships
This is a really good book. The author tells of several months in the life of a young, upwardly mobile professional woman and her relationships - with husband, with bosses, with employees, and with family and friends. She views these relationships from a unique perspective, but one thatprovides a unifying theme throughout the book. The subtle - and sometimesnot-so-subtle - ways by which people control and dominate each other areextraordinarily well described.I learned more about my own relationshipsfrom this book than I have from several self-help books, and I wasn't eventrying to!

The characters are well drawn, true to life, and generallysympathetic. We feel for Sarah as she goes through the vicissitudes of herlife, and understand why she thinks and acts as she does. Her developmentas a person during the course of the narrative is remarkable (well, if itwasn't, there wouldn't have been a book to write) but it also makes sensewithin the context of the events of her life.Sarah's interactions withbosses and subordinates in the business world are absolutely dead-on.Infact, the book's strongest point is the realism of the people and theirinterpersonal relationships, something rare in today's fiction. But makeno mistake - the heroine, and she is that, is an engaging and likeableperson whose eventual triumph is both well deserved and completelysatisfying.

I've read it twice now, and will no doubt read it severalmore times over the next few years.I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Witty wisdom walking San Francisco
I haven't read very many books about American women in middle management where the heroine actually thinks about her work, thinks about its consequences, thinks about how her work encourages or discourages her ownpersonal growth. Pearl City Control Theory does all that--in an engagingand humorous way. While far from ignoring outside work issues likefriendship, sex, and the pleasures of a wonderful walking city like SanFrancisco. Karen Allen has written a story of a woman waking up to herlife, and waking up, and waking up--with help and distractions from a hostof three dimensional, fascinating characters. It's a moving book, a funnyone, and even an inspiring one. For those looking for popular fiction onthe intelligent, distinctive level of an Alice Hoffman--with perhaps morepertinence to the average working woman's life--Pearl City Control Theory'sa winner.

Product Description
In Women and Pain, Dr. Mark Young shows readers how to finally end their chronic, agonizing pain. Most women -- and indeed, many health care professionals -- don't know that:

--Women often exhibit different symptoms than men for the same ailments; for instance, with coronary artery disease, where men typically feel chest pain but women more frequently report pain in the back, neck and jaw. Since most doctors are trained to look for and treat the typical male symptoms, many will misdiagnose a woman or tell her it's all in her mind -- when she is actually experiencing very serious symptoms.
--Women have both lower pain thresholds and less pain tolerance than do men -- i.e., they feel more pain.
--Certain classes of drugs work better to relieve women's pain than they do men's.
--Women may be at greater risk for pain-related disability -- in part, because of their reproductive cycles.
--Controversial new research reveals how anatomical differences between men and women may at least partially explain their distinct responses to pain.

Finally, here is an empowering and revolutionary book by a medical doctor that recognizes what many women have long known: Our pain is a uniquely female issue . . . and many of our physicians simply don't understand how to deal with it. Studies now demonstrate that women feel more pain, seek help more aggressively, and are more open to alternative treatments than men. At last, Dr. Mark Young offers women the practical and complementary solutions that other practitioners may have overlooked. Women and Pain specifically addresses a complex array of strictly female symptoms and concerns -- from childbirth and menstrual pain to fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis -- that set us apart from men.

Many women live with chronic, agonizing pain that affects every aspect of their lives. Traditional medicine can only offer drugs and surgery, but often neither is successful. Yet most women do not know of the many complementary and holistic treatments for pain that can provide great relief. Nor can they find out about alternative remedies from their doctors, who, when conventional remedies are exhausted, may dismiss pain as stress-related or "in your head." In addition, most traditional treatments are based on research that has only included men.

Not only does Dr. Young show that women respond differently to pain and require different treatments, he also provides very specific remedies, backed by scientific studies, for relieving hundreds of painful ailments. Women and Pain covers the hormonal connection to pain; bone and joint pain; muscle and nerve pain; headache; sports injuries; and chronic, unending pain. In addition to describing the traditional medicine cabinet, the author includes foods that heal; muscle strategies, such as Shiatsu and massage; herbal and botanical remedies; exercises to speed healing; mind-body therapies; and acupuncture. He even includes recipes, such as "migraine meals," for certain problems. You can use most of the remedies on your own, although you will need to consult with your doctor about others, such as traditional medicine and acupuncture.

This groundbreaking book will be welcome news to all the women who suffer from chronic pain, but who have had no lasting relief from doctors and traditional medical approaches.Amazon.com Review
"Women feel more pain than men," writes Mark Allen Young, M.D., F.A.C.P. "We now know that there are profound, gender-based differences in how women and men perceive pain." Likewise, pain treatment that works for one gender may be ineffective for the other. In Women and Pain, Young offers conventional plus complementary pain-relief options for many ailments common to women: PMS, headaches, foot pain, backaches, joint pain, and many more. His recommended therapies include herbs, dietary recommendations, recipes, supplements, homeopathy, exercise, mind-body techniques, and "do-it-yourself" aids such as baths, self-massage, and reflexology. Young, a physiatrist (physician board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation) and a licensed acupuncturist, illustrates and personalizes his points with frequent anecdotes from his practice.

"Given how much we know about pain, it's scandalous that women suffer needlessly," writes Young. Even though women feel more pain and seek help more aggressively than men, far too often women's complaints aren't taken seriously, and most research studies do not yield gender-specific information. This book is an attempt to help women understand what remedies are more likely to work for them, a valuable resource for women in pain who are dissatisfied with the treatment they have received. --Joan Price ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New book puts together information about pain
This is a wonderful new book by Dr.Mark Allen Young,a respected leader in the field of rehabilitation medicine. Dr Young has assimilated a great deal of information about the causes of chronic pain in women along with valuable information for the patient on how to improve these symptoms. Written in a succinct, user friendly style, I was particularly impressed with the author's evalaution of the pros and cons of alternative medicine (including nutraceutical) options for pain management.
This book should be especially beneficial for patients needing information and options, when they continue to have symptoms of pain, despite following "physician orders". The book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Pain
Finding relief from pain is sometimes a desperate struggle.Often it seems that some physicians and other health care practitioners take the easy way out and will throw low level narcotic relief at you with the hope that you will just go away. Its cheap, easy, and eff... well two out of three isn't bad.At other times they will deny your painexperience, and invalidate your suffering, especially, if you are a woman. The very complexity of the pain experience is often ignored.

WOMEN AND PAIN: WHY IT HURTS AND WHAT YOU CAN DO is both amazing and helpful. The authors discuss traditional methods of pain relief and control as well as alternative methods. The explanations of both vitamin and herbal aids for pain relief and the many other methods are elegantly expressed in plain, simple language that can be understood by anyone.

WOMEN AND PAIN: WHY IT HURTS AND WHAT YOU CAN DO is a masterful work about pain relief for women for this new millennium.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
Dr. Youngs new book "Women And Pain..." led me to a life which someone like me would only dream of: a life with no pain. This book is the best book I ever bought. I suffered from migrains and back pain for over 7 years and the pain vanished after about 2 1/2 weeks of trying Dr. Youngs methods, I tried almost every other method out there and this is the only one that worked!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I am Pain Free!
After about 2 weeks of trying Dr. Youngs methods I was pain free. I wish I had bought this book sooner. This book is packed with complementary, holistic and traditional remedies for almost any type of pain you can think of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book truly helped me cope, and eventaully cure my chronic back and foot pain. I highly recommend anyone with pain to buy this book. ... Read more
