5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully helpful!
I received this book as a gift from a friend, specifically for Polly O'Connor's chapter, "Our Brain When We Grieve," to help with the sudden loss of my two very special pets.Polly's chapter was immensely helpful.Normally a pretty rational and overly logical person, I couldn't help thinking I was going crazy to be grieving so much over two small animals who had lived good, long lives.Polly's chapter explained how neurological patterns trigger certain emotional and physical responses, including pain during loss.Although (necessarily) a little technical, her explanations were very clear and understandable - and very interesting.I also find understanding how the brain processes different thoughts and emotions to be very helpful in dealing with other life issues.

After reading that chapter, I thought I'd just breeze through a few of the other chapters to see what they were about. As it turned out, I found it hard to put the book down because every single chapter contained valuable advice and tips on other important life situations:business, relationships, families, decision-making, etc.I highly recommend "Changes of the Heart."I can't think of anyone who wouldn't benefit from it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best choice
After reading "Changes of the Heart"edited by Anna Paradox I found it to be one of the best self help books I have ever seen.It does not tell you what to do, instead it gives you step by step questions to ask your self to help you make the best choice for your own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
It is quite rarely we call books beautiful, but "Changes of the heart" indeed is a great work of amazing talented people who had a power to get together and create the book which can answer to so many different questions for different stages of life. Almost encyclopedia for life, it can be helpful when you need to loose weight, havequestions how to raise a challenging child, making difficult choices or need to renew your energy. It is all in one book. I own the copy and looking forward to give it as gift to my friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for getting clarity!
My wife and I were in the process of buying a summer home and were considering an option to buy a mobile home. We couldn't quite figure out whether to buy it or not so we used a chapter in the book "Practical Guide to making choices" by Alina Bas and went through the exercise and then it became really clear to us that we do not want to buy that specific house. This book let us see our assumptions, commitments and desires clearly and put us on the same page. Later on we got a much better deal which saved us tens of thousands of dollars!
This book is an amazing tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-affirming from cover to cover

I've read "Changes of the Heart" from cover to cover and I have found so much that is life-affirming, reassuring and helpful even in topics that don't directly relate to my current situation.

A dynamite thriller filled with all the elements that have made his previous works phenomenal bestsellers, The Sky Is Falling is Sidney Sheldon at his sizzling best.

Amazon.com Review
Dana Evans, who made her first appearance in Sidney Sheldon's The Best Laid Plans, is a spunky, good-looking, young Washington TV journalist who's recently returned to the nation's capital from the Balkans, where she adopted a handicapped war orphan who's having trouble adjusting to life in America. But that doesn't keep Dana from following a story all over the world, from Washington to Aspen, Nice, Juneau, Dusseldorf, Rome, Brussels, Moscow, and Siberia. Each of these brief visits is like a postcard--a local landmark or two, an interesting local restaurant (at least in the European venues), and another piece of the puzzle, which has to do with why every member of a venerable, old Washington dynasty has died a violent death in the last year. It seems strange that in a media-savvy city like Washington, no one but Dana has noticed there's a pattern in the rapid extinction of the Winthrops or even whispered the words family vendetta. But that's why pretty, young girl TV reporters were invented, at least by Sheldon.

As Dana sets out to investigate the distinguished career of the Winthrop family patriarch, her lover Jeff, a sports anchor at her station, is called away to administer aid and succor to his former wife, a beautiful model who's realized, too little and too late, that she never should have dumped him. And Kemal, the 12-year-old orphan, is being drugged by his baby sitter, who's in cahoots with at least one set of bad guys. Dana hasn't noticed how tractable the temperamental boy has become recently because she's been dressing up like a two-bit Russian tramp to infiltrate a secret weapons base in Siberia... Do you hear the words movie locations? But all's well that ends well, as it usually does for Sheldon's heroines, and in the meantime you've learned where the five-star hotels are and what to order in a famous restaurant in Rome. A slick, commercial, slightly thin tale told by a craftsman of the genre. --Jane Adams ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sidney Seldom writes good books anymore
To the people who gave this book one star, you were overly generous. I've always been intrigued by Sheldon's books but this one was obviously written by an impostor.
The dialog was trite and ridiculous. We have a supposedly great anchorwoman who is known for her reporting skills flying all over the globe to share about 2 lines of conversation before going to the next city. She has no idea what she's looking for, does no investigative reporting and shows surprising naivete for someone so worldly. I found the whole book to be a big disappointment. Sorry Sid, your cookie cutter approach ain't cuttin' it no more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but somewhat disappointing
A fast paced, interesting, but somewhat disappointing book. The main character's travels all over the globe in a very short time span seemed highly impossible. Also, the story almost moved too fast.It was entertaining enough though. It just was not as good as some of Sheldon's older books.I do not recommend that readers buy a new copy of this book.It would be better to check it out of a local library, borrow a copy from a friend or buy a used copy like I did.I didn't pay much for it, so I passed it on to someone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book as expected because the author always write interesting books. My husband and I both enjoyed it very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Shipper
I'm an avid reader and I'm always able to find what I'm looking for on Amazon.Their shippers are the best!Always fast shipping and accurate descriptions.Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Predictable Sheldonian Fun
Sheldon is improbable, silly and sometimes frustrating. One of the lines that made me laugh out loud was "she warmed herself in the summer of his arms."This does not mean that I don't enjoy reading the books, however.

When I'm in an airport, or stuck in a hotel room, these are perfect. The Sky is Falling requires no deeper thought than "hm" as the pages effortlessly turn. The members of an entire family are killed, and it is too much of a coincidence for the protagonist, a television reporter, to accept. She sets out to see if she can determine what really happened, and many cliffhangers ensue.

Don't expect Proust, but it's a fun read, and great when you need something that demands nothing of you but your eyes. ... Read more

Product Description
The extraordinary novel that is taking the publishing and film worlds by storm, A Dry Spell is at once a powerful love story, a chilling portrayal of nature unleashed, and a mesmerizing thriller reminiscent of early Stephen King.

A town of wide open prairies and endless skies, Goodlands, North Dakota, seemed the perfect place to farm and raise a family--until four years without rain brought the town to its knees. Now darkness has descended on Goodlands: fires are singeing the already parched land, suspicious crimes are on the rise and an ever-increasing sense of doom is enveloping the town.Goodlands is being held in the grip of something beyond weather. And only a stranger can set it free.

Tom Keatley has pulled rain from the sky in town after arid town.A loner, a drifter, Tom is a rainmaker, the stuff of myth. But to Karen Grange, an outsider like Tom, he is her only hope to save the dying town. For Tom Keatley, inextricably drawn to Goodlands and to Karen, the storm is just beginning.Because beneath the hard, cracked earth is a shattering secret that only he can uncover. And in the hot, dry air, a sinister force is gathering strength, ready to wage a war for the soul of the town.

With its unforgettable characters, tautly woven human dramas and harrowing portrait of the power of nature, A Dry Spell weaves a spell all its own.It is an epic story of evil and redemption, and of lives transformed in a dying town. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good read!
I chose this book because somewhere I read it was reminiscent of early Stephen King. The characters were full, and you really were interested in the outcome of all. I also liked the sexual tension of the novel, which is nice in this genre as I detest romance novels. It was not black and white, but shades of gray, which life really is.
This is one that I had to turn the pages to find for what would happen next. Very enjoyable. Checked it out from library, and then ordered my own copy to keep and share with those who like the same thing as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rain Rain
This is my first Moloney read and I am impressed .

The story starts out so relaxing in a fictional town of Goodlands North Dakota . A small town that most would say is a nice place to farm and raise a family but then Goodlands hasn't had any rain for 4 yrs and the farmers are concerned and then Tom (a drifter ) comes to town and his first stop is a bar where he meets these guys and makes a $50 wager with them that he can make it rain ............

In away the author brings Tom to life in the novel and with his ways of trying to congure up the rain it is so relaxing like you are right there on that field next to him and feel the presence of the rain just beyond grasp , so real you can almost smell the rain and the fresh air .

A very nice relaxing read and I give this author and the plot of the story 5*. I will read more by Moloney .

4-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing
Once I started reading this book it had me well within its grasp. I could not put it down. There are a few places where it drags and the author goes on tangents (I blame the editor, not the author), but the story itself is gripping.

With a better editor, this author could definitely give Stephen King a run for his money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As It Could Have Been
I really was interested in this book from the get go.It has a very interesting and unusual plot.I found myself skimming pages toward the last third of the book only because I was beginning to find the writing slow and more "filler" than anything. As good as the story started out, my interest dwindled toward the last part of the book.I think the "main" characters, the rainmaker and Karen, should have been explored further, as well as the entity. It just never seemed to quite cross the line from interesting to gripping.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old friend revisited
I originally read this book when it was first published years ago.I never forgot it and, when I ran across a copy recently, grabbed it up to visit once again.

Unfortunately, like many fond memories revisited, this book failed to live up to my recollection. The story stayed in my mind for years because of the originality of its premise, but the writing quality isn't as spectacular as I recall.Either that, or my taste has been educated and elevated over the last several years.

Still, it's a decent workmanlike genre novel:a romantic thriller with supernatural overtones, efficiently plotted and relatively well-executed for its kind.Karen the banker and Tom the rainmaker are sympathetic characters, if somewhat underdeveloped. The other town residents barely rise above two-dimensionality but serve their purpose in advancing the story. The loose ends, with one glaring exception, tie up neatly.(The "town secret" is the one gaping hole in the plot never resolved to my satisfaction.)

If you're looking for great literature, read To Kill A Mockingbird. If you want an enjoyable way to give your brain a rest and kill a few hours, read this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Female attorney turned author, Part 2
As mentioned in my previous review, this is an author that I have
read several of her books. Her stories never disappoint a reader.
"Running from the Law" is a fine example of her talent as a writer; and you always seem to learn something about the judicial system as a layman.

5-0 out of 5 stars running from the law
have read all of ms scottoline's books and have enjoyed every one of them.have recommended her books over and over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Running from the Law
I like Lisa Scottoline's style of writing.I enjoyed the book, as I have enjoyed all of hers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just fair....
I agree with the reviewer about the "double dialogue" - Rita's sarcastic comments in her head, and their contrast to what she actually says. The problem is that these comments are the best part of the book. The poker-playing buddies, as well as Rita's dad, are all stock ethnic stereotypes and unfunny, to say nothing of unbelievable. The Main Line "WASP" types are also a stereotype and never come alive as characters.
I will admit that I didn't guess the murderer so must give Lisa some kudos. However, the surprise romantic ending had no basis in the book; I even went back to the relevant section to see what was said and it was just a few sentences.Huh?
Unlike some other reviewers, I don't know that this one could keep my attention over the course of a plane ride.

3-0 out of 5 stars Suspend disbelief to enjoy this one
Rita Morrone is a trial lawyer in Philadelphia who not only defends her clients, but upstages the entire local police force by single-handedly solving the crimes for which her clients are charged.Believable?Well, hardly, but it does make for an intriguing plot.

Rita's live-in boyfriend Paul is a forensic architect (a WHAT? do I hear you gasp?) and his father a respected and well-off federal judge. When Daddy is accused of sexually harassing his young secretary, Patricia, Rita naturally takes on his defence. Then the secretary is found murdered, and the judge and son Paul, who had also been carrying on an affair with Patricia, both come under suspicion. The judge is charged with the murder, and Rita not only takes on his case, but determines to prove him innocent, at tremendous risk to herself, by attempting to uncover the true identity of the killer.

Lisa Scottoline has written a fast-moving tale, with plenty of plot twists and more than a couple of red herrings. The dialogue is feisty, witty, and very bitchy in places. The characterisations are sharp, particularly those of Rita's butcher father and his poker-playing cronies, who come across as full of spirit and humour, and the book makes for an entertaining read -- if you can suspend disbelief long enough to accept the basic plot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book, great nuggets of information, as advertised.
It took a bit to get to the really useful information but Hunter and Kam offer information that I have never seen before: information such as the formulaic approach to tapering, which I've never seen before, the strength training programs (can't wait to begin the one-legged sled/spin protocol), links to Google documents that lay everything out, even the sample programs that they both offer are useful.

It's been a while since I read the Hunter/Coggan book that this book refers to, but it's clear that this book...well, more of a guide...builds upon the Hunter/Coggan book.

Last, I wish there were more pictures in this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible waste of time
I was expecting this book to help train and race time trials using a power meter. That is what it says it will tell you. Instead, it refers to the Coggin book and in the middle says it is basically prerequisite reading. It does not even give you any info on zones etc but instead says to look in the coggin book.

It took half the book to get to anything even remotely "meaty" in terms of content.

I am sorry I wasted my time on this one. ... Read more

Precocious Katy Thatcher comes to realize what a gentle, silent boy did for his family. He meant to help, not harm. It didn’t turn out that way.

“The author balances humor and generosity with the obstacles and injustice of Katy’s world to depict a complete picture of the turn of the 20th century.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred

4-0 out of 5 stars The Silent Boy review by a children's book lover
The Silent Boy, by Lois Lowry is a sweet tale.I haven't quite figured out what Lowry's themes are about, but according to her website, they are about human connections. I'm not sure I agree. But anyway, this is a delightful book. Not in a silly kind of way, like some of her others, but because the main character, Katy, has no prejudice and has an open, curious spirit. While the title would lead you to believe that the story is a bout the boy, it isn't really. The Silent Boy, Jacob, seems to me to only be a peripheral character. The child does not speak, and because of that is called many awful names that Katy seeks to understand.

I chose this book because I though it would address children with disabilities.Jacob is eventually sent to an asylum where they care for mentally ill and possibly disabled people.I was hoping for more insight into Jacob's disability but I guess that would have been too difficult a topic for a children's book. Each chapter contains a vintage photo which helps the reader visualize the characters. It is an interesting feature.
The Silent Boy is a fine book and an enjoyable read. I give it 3 paws!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Strikes Close To Home
Growing up I had a great uncle, my grandmothers brother who had a condition simular to Jacobs. He was born a normal boy in the 1920's but when he was around 4 or 5 he contracted a very bad case of measles. He was one of the rare cases that developed encephalitis or swelling of the brain. As such he suffered severe brain damage.

While my uncle didn't have the exact same symptoms as jacob, he dealt with the same type of prejudice from people who didn't understand him, who ridiculed him and over reacted to the things he did. And like Jacob he was institutionalized for it (though thankfully for only a short period of time).

This book deals heavily with those issues that face the way we treat the mentally handicapped even today. Told 80 years after the fact, it becomes clear that this was a defining issue in Katy's childhood, the one that made her realize that there is definate injustice in the world.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Mature Audience
I hadn't thought much of the book through most of it, however, toward the very end an event happens that touched me deeply. It's quite hinted at that something dreadful took place and before I got to the unveiling of that, I didn't know if I could continue reading this and thankfully, quickly realized I was on the wrong track.

I ache at the unfairness of it. Yes, the occurrence itself was sad, however, the resulting consequence to a particular individual did not seem fitting.

Giving it 2 stars doesn't seem fitting either and yet most of the story was quite prosaic. Not much happening except day-to-day events of the young main character. However, the climactic event really peaked it out. At that point, it had an Of Mice and Men feel to it, hence the mature audience bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms Lowry Does it Again
I adore reading children's literature.A gifted author can put into a few pages what a less gifted author cannot fit into 500 pages.Ms Lowry is to be admired because her books are different. She is not stuck in one genre or type of book. This book also delivers on many levels.

Ms Lowry gives us the narrator Katy and a vast cast of supporting characters. Her mother and father. Her father is the town doctor.I enjoyed the scenes with father & daughter when he goes on calls & takes Katy along. He seems to be a wise man.In a era when children did not learn the facts of life, he tells her where babies come from, complete with pictures.Katy's best friend Jessy is a character totally different from Katy.Jessy drops things, says the wrong thing at the wrong time.Katy is aware of this in a very mature manner.Naomi the cook is seldom directly seen. She just conveniently leaves food.Naomi left a pie for supper.

The story really begins with the arrival of Peggy the teenage hired girl.Peggy is a level headed practical girl.Peggy's flighty red haired sister, Nellie, works for the neighbors.Peggy & Nellie come from the country to earn money.Through Peggy we meet her brother Jacob, who roams the country petting the animals, but doesn't talk. Many people in the town think he is touched or perhaps deaf/mute.Katy befriends Jacob & takes an interest in his comings & goings.

The story ends with Nellie getting into trouble & being sent back to the farm.Katy hears the adults discussing this in whispers. So she is not sure of what has happened to Nellie.
I won't give away the ending. But the book takes a rather abrupt turn with Nellie's departure. The story doesn't have a happy ending. Many people are hurt by the turn of events.

This story would be a great book club book.It would be suited for mature kids over the age of twelve or so.I don't think younger children should read this book. But I think older girls or boys would find this a well written book. And it's a book any adult could enjoy also.It is the rare writer who can write in such a way that doesn't talk down to children and that adults can also enjoy.
