Product Description
Mom and Dad Fleefenbacher think their daughter Zoe's hair is wild and beautiful. And for her kindergarten teacher, Zoe's vivacious tresses were a comfort. But Zoe's about to start first grade, and her new teacher doesn't fool around....

"School has rules," she says. "No wild hair in my class!"

So what are Zoe and her free-spirited hair going to do now?

With exuberance and humor to spare, Laurie Halse Anderson and Ard Hoyt, the New York Times bestselling author and illustrator, tease up a terrific tale of hairy hijinks, classroom chaos, and the importance of teachers and students learning to work together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hair ball of fun!
Bright, red hair with a mind of it's own! A little with a mop of crazy hair that does everything from get cookies from the cookie jar and pet the cat to taking out the trash and flying. The problem comes when Zoe and her hair go to first grade. First grade has rules and there's no room for uncontrolled hair.I think young children will really get a kick out of the hair and all the funny things it gets into. I loved the book and the illustrations. Except for the fact that Zoe's eyes were not two different colors in the illustrationsas described. Not even in the first picture where it tells you they are.

4-0 out of 5 stars For those Bad Hair Days
From its bright purple end papers and wrap-around cover featuring a flowing mop of wild red hair clutching a baseball mitt, bat, pink flamingo, goldfish bowl and Zoe Fleefenbacher, you can tell this is a serious book about a girl with a serious hair problem. Her bright red untamed hair has a mind of its own, which is fine at home but wreaks havoc in Ms. Trisk's first grade class because "school has rules" and Zoe's hair seems determined to break them all. It tickles people, it draws on the walls while Zoe is in time-out, it must be tamed. Braids don't work, and ponytails don't work; scrunchies, barrettes and clips and headbands and duct tape are all brought to bear on the problem of Zoe Fleefenbacher's hair (the kids will love the name I'm sure) to no avail. When Ms. Trisk has difficulty demonstrating the solar system's workings to her class and the wild red hair breaks free to help, the day is saved and Zoe Fleefenbacher'shyperbolic hair proves to be amazing and helpful, and thoroughly acceptable in the first grade. We can hardly wait to see what happens in the second grade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I can't say enough good about this book. The story is interesting, the illustrations are phenomenal, and the message is spot on.

First, the story.Zoe is a cute little first grader with very special hair. Her wild red hair can do things for Zoe, like brush her teeth and take out the trash.Zoe's new teacher doesn't know how to cope with such special hair, and things get, ummm, hairy. The story is great. The author has created a very likable character, introduced some conflict, and resolved it in a way that makes the reader say, "Yes!"

Secondly, the illustrations.Ard Hoyt knows how to draw hair.I found myself mesmerized by Zoe's undulating locks.Every time I read the book to my daughters, I would see something new in the illustrations.Every now and then I find myself picking it up just for a quick flip through on my own.Zoe's hair has a mind of its own, and the pictures reveal that fact perfectly.

Thirdly, the message.I really appreciated this book's message and I think it's one kids need to hear over and over again. We're not all the same, and we don't have to pretend that we are or can all do the same things. The moral of Zoe's hair is very similar to the message in The Incredibles (Two-Disc Collector's Edition). Some people have special gifts, and society only harms itself when it tries to minimize those gifts in the spirit of equality.

Give this book a try.Delightful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Zoe Fleefenbacher and her wild, difficult to control hair head off to first grade, where her hair lands her in trouble. The story is rather predictable, but the ideas of individuality, and teachers and students working together, are told anew with Zoe's wild red hair. The best thing about this book for us, and our 3 and 5 year old daughters, is that it piqued their interest in the solar system. Other than that, it's a nice story with nice illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to reach out to kids
I purchased this to help my niece who HATES reading and just cant seem to enjoy a book. Well this book scaled that brick wall for her. She dreams of being a vet and connects very well with animals. She and her mother both read the book and called me to share how great it was. I was glad to find a book without demons, horror and negativity, something that was realistic without being covered in the modern day muck of life today. I was thrilled she found a connection and I felt more connected to her through these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is best book ever!
Have youever seenstrangerssell dogs?Well if youhave be careful becausethey couldbe sellingsick or stollen dogs. This book is about fighting for the life of sick dogs thisgirl is a vet helper ; every daypeoplecome in withtheir sick dogs and itsverystrange becauseevery one who comes in with their sick dogsboughtthem from the same person. They finally find the stranger who sells the dogs and reports him to the police and the vet and the girl help the peopelsave the dogsand the people live happy with their healthy dogs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent/Librarian View: Great Animal Book for 4th-5th Graders
My fourth-grade son came across the Wild At Heart series a few weeks ago and has now read six of them.I read two -- worried that they would be either too saccharine, too dogmatic, or too sad for him. They are none of these. They are EXCELLENT books pitched straight at the upper elementary level -- well-written, realistic without being condescending or brutal, and with excellent situational and character development.

As a library volunteer 2+ times a week for the past five years, I know that animal books FLY off the shelves into the hands of (especially) young girls. This is one that belongs there ... BUT ... don't neglect to buy it for any animal-loving boy, either!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches children about animal abuse and puppy mills!
This series is important in teaching children about animals, how to care for them, humane handling,,,etc. Thanks to the series...our daughter will learn about puppy mills, ferral cat colonies and how to humanely handle them by trap/spay/neuter & release! We are really enjoying these books. She is six and is really into them. It's so nice to be able to teach her these things and to discuss them further in a gentle way! Thanks for a GREAT SERIES Laurie! We bought 1-4 at a school book fair, 5 & 6 at a bookstore and...I just pre-ordered the next 4 (7,8,9 & 10) here on Amazon! As animal lovers ourselves and stray lovers, we can connect with these books - and feel wat goes into them!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fight for Life
This book was very gripping. It was also a good book to read if you wanted to be a veterinarian because it gives you good information. The cool thing is these books are true. This book also tells you a lot of things that you need to do when you are a vet like how to clean cages. I think this book is definitely good for anyone who wants to be a vet. I think that because this book is about a girl who helps around the clinic.
This book is all about a girl named Maggie who helps her grandma with the vet clinic, but now her grandma thinks that she needs to bring her grades way up, and until then she can't help in the clinic instead she will hire volunteers. Then on top of that her cousin Zoe is coming, and then on top of all of that sick puppies keep coming to the clinic and they might be coming from a puppy mill! What will she do? How can she save those pups?

5-0 out of 5 stars a tresure
I allways wanted this book, filled with the most amazing texts and images. A journey in to the backstage of the performance an much more from Laurie anderson.

5-0 out of 5 stars And Everything It Says Is True.
This book is the definitive companion.Laurie's work can often resemble a slowly realized puzzle. You flip a few pieces over, notice this one resembles that one, while at the same time appreciating each piece for itself.Reading this book is like seeing the box the puzzle came in.It's not quite cheating; it sheds new light on each individual piece and inspires a new appreciation.Balanced with nearly an equal amount of pictures and text, it is accessible as a coffee table book and essential for a Laurie Anderson fan, examining her work as a sculptor and early experiments before United States I-IV.Perhaps the most memorable bit in this volume is reading in print that all the stories within are true.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the time, and this is the record of the time.
This inspiring retrospective covers a twenty-year period from her "Institutional Dream Series" in 1972, where she would sleep in various public places (a library restroom, a night courtroom, a seaport) tosee how it affected her dreams, up to her live shows of "Stories fromthe Nerve Bible" in 1992. While the material is generally presented ina linear fashion, images and texts from different stages of her career arejuxtaposed to underline the many recurring themes in her work (dreams, speech, time, technology). Various entertaining stories, observations andanecdotes are interspersed with stage directions and song lyrics. There'san annotated chronology at the end to help keep things straight. Anderson'sperformances have often utilized the violin, and her numerous modifiedversions of it are explored (the Tape Bow Violin, the Self-Playing Violin, the digital violin, the neon violin, the Viophonograph). Many of her otherinnovations are also touched upon, including her projects with the pillowspeaker, the Handphone Table, the Acoustic Lens, the video clone, and thebody drum-suit. Filled with countless photos and stills from herinstallations and presentations, this book will grab your interest whetheryou read it cover to cover or just open it up at random. It's a magnificentlook at the "performance artist," and essential for fans of herwork. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Silence is Golden
"You know I'd give you anything I've got for a little peace of mind."-- John Lennon, from "I'm So Tired," 1968

Charity, a pre-tween (under age 8) is desperately trying to think of a good Mother's Day gift. With just two days to spare, she is struck by inspiration - her noisy, chaotic home is just the source of her great idea.Charity will give her mother a day of total peace and quiet, a gift that is much appreciated.

A wonderful book about giving a real gift that keeps on giving. No doubt this book will inspire children to think up their own good gift ideas, based on their individual mothers and their individual needs.

The Critters' 1967 "Silence is Golden" is the soundtrack of this story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Idea

This is not a fan only curiosity, it is by far one of the most amazing soudpieces in the tradition of art music, and as a radio show it's absolutly unique. As always, when Laurie is confronted with a challenge, she come out with reinvention, cultural references, simplicity, sincerity and creativity. At the same time, it's a delightful pleasure to listen to, as a sound diary on her very own intimacy (featuring Lou, her mother, her brother's parrot and friends), linked with wonderful bits of violin textures and rythmic parts, and as a poetic narration of human existence on the XXI century. The 2 cds are 2h jewels for "everyday music" enthusiasts that pay direct hommage to John Cage. Realy a masterpiece! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for fans "the book"
Very rare and delightfull. I can't think why one would sell it, but I'm thankfull for it. Just perfect. It was on top of my wish list forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frames For The Pictures
Published in 1984 as a companion book to Laurie Anderson's massive work-in-progress "United States: Parts I-IV," this engaging collection of images and words succeeds as both a handy supplement to theperformance and a compelling coffee table book. The world premiere was heldat the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1983, and audio recordings of thetwo-evening cycle were released as a 4-disc set. Since many of her fans, particularly new listeners discovering her work, don't have the opportunityto experience this opus as a live multimedia presentation, this bookprovides a way to see many of the images and ideas that originallycorresponded with the sounds and music. There are photos and stills fromthe various pieces (in mostly B&W, with a few in color), and clip art, sketches and score notes. All of the words (both spoken and sung) are fullytranscribed as well, making this an interesting anthology of lyrics, poems, stories, and ponderings. Not only is this book a welcome enhancement to asitting with the live CD set, it functions as an inspiring work of printart, too. This is one of the best books I've read because it seemed so real. Fear of Falling was exciting, especially when the author wrote about the Siamese cat being treated for breathing problems, with younger kids helping the vet as vet assistants.I want to be a vet someday.David, the main character, learned that jumping horses is dangerous and riders should take precautions. But he learned he could fall and still like jumping. This book seemed real because the characters were young, and the story was told from their point of view.Readers should be at Level 6 (third grade) to read this book. ... Product Description

In the Inferno, the first of the three-part Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri is wandering through a dark wood on the evening of Good Friday in the year 1300. Losing his way and suddenly fearful, he looks up to see the sun shining on a mountain above. He tries to reach it, but is thwarted by three beasts. The Roman poet Virgil appears, sent to guide him back to the path and on to the top of the mountain. They must go through Hell, says Virgil, but will eventually reach Heaven, where Dante's beloved Beatrice awaits. Thus begins this poetic tale whose vivid images of the circles of hell, its themes of human torment and triumph, and the search for spiritual sustenance and transcendent love have made it a classic of Western literature. This audio version features several narrators — including Corin Redgrave and Laurie Anderson — and a moody score by the ambient musician Scanner (Robin Rimbaud).
