4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping Adventure - loses coherency in the last bit...
I Gm for two different gaming groups and have run this with both now (and played it once as a player - my introduction into WFRP).Playing the adventure, I thought it was exciting and intriguing - things are not handed to players, and they really have to work to put the pieces together. However, my GM modified the adventure a fair amount (I realized once I started to run it myself), and I have modified it both times I ran it as well. The first half to two-thirds is GREAT stuff.Even your "tank" players will feel the pressure of long treks, strenuous paces, multiple tough combats in the span of a short period (not allowing them time to fully recover), and thus they will have to start planning their combat strategies better just to survive. It really is a nice challenge.Once you get past a certain point and start heading back to the city, the story line meanders around for a bit and loses a lot of its momentum.I have heavily altered these chapters prior to the climax to make them go quicker and be less involved, instead focusing on the time-crunch to make the adventurers concerned. The climax, if planned well by the GM and set up with appropriate encounters, will be one the adventurers never forget!Even if the story line stayed on path, I would still give this 4 stars just because it can't touch Shadows over Bogenhafen, but I feel it is more exciting and challenging than Death on the Reik, which I would give 3 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mish-mash of ideas and themes
As a longtime player of Warhammer Fantasy RolePlay (WFRP) I was very happy to see Hogshead pick up the rights to WFRP after Games Workshop abandoned this great product. This is the first new adventure material produced byHogshead and while welcome, is not neary as good as some of the olderadventures in the Enemy Within campaign (Death on the Reik, Power Behindthe Throne).

In this adventure, the players are racing against time toforstall an ancient prophecy about the return of a Daemonic entity in andaround the city of Marienburg. The problem is in trying to maintain acoherent storyline when each chapter is being plotted by different authors. In the end, the adventure comes across as a mish-mash of interesting ideasbut the coherency is lost. It is still a good book, however, just notgreat. There is a good balance of investigation and action and would suitpretty much any gaming group. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The zeal of the recently converted
The subtitle of the book ("how a guilty liberal lost his innocence") gives the impression this is another of those "how liberals are destroying America" books you see in the best seller list on Amazon. The book is in fact the story of a mild mannered Englishman's journey from young idealistic socialist to middle aged, middle class pragmatist. The book also purports to be a serious look at race politics, culture politics, the politics of religion and the politics of left vs right. The writer is a journalist who writes for English newspapers.

The chapters dealing with the author's journey from left wing revolutionary to middle class respectability are written with honesty and humour and I found them immensely entertaining.

The book is written from a very English perspective about England. The problems and issues raised do not necessarily apply to other countries. Nevertheless I found the book interesting as an insight into the problems facing modern England. The author does not pretend to be a dispassionate observer, but writes as a participant with a strong interest in the issues discussed.

As a study of social issues the book is mostly well written pulp. The cynic in me wonders if the topics of the book were cherry picked by the author to drive book sales. Let's see... political correctness, 9/11, Islam. It's all there.

The book largely consists of a long series of straw man arguments. The author will present an example of liberals doing or saying something horrendously stupid (although one wonders if there is another side to each of these anecdotes) and presents this as proof that all liberals are well meaning idiots. Unfortunately it takes more than a series of cleverly chosen anecdotes to destroy a whole ideology. Especially one as vaguely defined as "liberalism".

Basically the author has swapped one set of black and white beliefs ("America is the greatest threat to world peace") for another ("Muslims and the political correctness that allows it to thrive is the greatest threat to Britain)". As always, the truth is somewhere in between, but you wouldn't sell many books by saying that would you?

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite must read
Any attempt to discuss this book briefly, would do this political and personal masterpiece a disservice. This is a book for people who care about Western Civilization. it boggles the mind that this reasoned and thoughtful text, by a brilliant writer can incur anything other than respect. But it seems that the critics of the book are intent on proving him right by not willing to be confused by the facts.Left leaning liberals (of which i am a proud member) should be able to protect the hard earned gains of enlightenment rather than siding with those who are explicitly trying to demolish it. Mr. Anthony nails this perplexing paradox in the best possible way.

While Anglo -centric to an extent, this book would speak to anyone who cares about the west and the ideals of liberty human rights and peace. A must read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars When ideals meet reality...
This should be a "must read" book for anyone who has very firm political opinions of any stripe. Yes, it may be hard to find (so far, it has not found a US publisher) and may revolve around British events (from Thatcher's rule to the terrorist attacks of July 7 rather than New York and Washington on 9/11) but it's a deeply-felt and deeply-moving analysis of one politically-oriented individual's intellectual coming of age.

Anthony examines how his own political convictions were formed, with a kind of ruthless honesty that is all too rare, and goes on to review the events that cause him to revisit those beliefs and REALLY analyze how he came to hold them. It almost doesn't matter whether you are liberal, conservative or where your personal beliefs fall along the political spectrum; this book will challenge you to think about how you came by them. How many were inherited? How many are gut reactions to events? How many are shaped by prejudice, by friends and people around you (by being unwilling to be the only person in a crowd to disagree on an issue that everyone else is passionate about.)

The tough part, of course, is subjecting your political beliefs to an analytical scrutiny to see if they remain valid; something which far too few of us do in practice. The debate in the book revolves around the social & political environment of Britain from the 1970s to today, with the terrorist attacks of 7/7 and 9/11 serving as the catalyst for the author's own introspection, but that's just at the top level. More important than the specific conclusions he reaches is the wrenching process of examining his own biases and preconceptions.

Run out and read this one. It will appeal to anyone who reads books by authors challenging received wisdom, including Susan Jacoby and Thomas Frank. ... Read more

In their second book Gibbs and Humphries look at how the need for constant organisational improvements and the increase in partnering come together in what they describe as Collaborative Change. This book describes the underlying concepts and models that can be applied, and critically draws heavily on personal experience to shed light on how effective change can be executed through high performing partnerships.
