WONDERFUL CHRISTIAN ROMANCE AUDIO NOVEL
I would recommend this audio novel to all who enjoy a love story as well as historical background. Reading the book of Esther first is a plus but anyone can get the point of the story just by listening to it. For Christians this is a must "read." Tommy Tenney did a really good job in portraying the story of God's love for His people and for the world.

Excellent book for the practitioner
I was working on a project, and used this book for understanding how different parts of the Java API work. Found it very helpful. I used the chapters on Collections classes, Reflection, Arrays, Memory and Constructors, and Interfaces as Types quite extensively.

It's not a complete book in and of itself. You will still need a Java Language reference book. This book is more of a tutorial. It's great for self-learning.

And I thought I knew Java
The amount of mistakes and confusing abstraction combined with a awfulwriting style make this one of the worst computing books I've read. Iactually only read it half-way though because it was making me naucious.

Only for advanced programmers!
Most reviewers here submitted bad reviews of this book. Some of them are right - still, they seem to have forgotten one thing: this book is definitely not meant for beginners - just as with Waite's Java 1.2 How-To.There some difference between the two books, though:

+ some of the biggerexamples of this book are definitely not trivial - I learnt a lot from theexamples in the book. Waite's book, on the other hand, only had theGalaxians shoot'm'up that I really liked.

+ the quality of the text ismuch higher. This book isn't an exhaustive treatment of Java either, but atleast it excels in a few areas: inner classes, collections and reflection.

That is, of you have to choose between the two books, gofor the SunPress one. It can even be recommended as a third or fourth book- it's, after all, quite cheap and only contain few severe factual errors.On the other hand, there're entire areas that the book totally neglects(AWT / Swing / event handling is completely missing from the book). Thebook isn't really proofread / checked, it contains a lot of 1.1-references(classes.zip on page xxxiii, for example - the more severe errors will bementioned later).

Chapter 1: About Java. Introduction to JDK, compiling,running, HelloWorld as both an application and applet. p. 6 contains showssetting the CLASSPATH without = marks (quite a big mistake).

Chapter 2:Beginning with a program. A line counter program: file, BufferedReader andreading each char - using readLine() would have been much better! Alsoexplains all the Java issues the application uses - in one sentence(ecxeption handling, streams, boolean etc). Fortunately, later sectionstend to be much more verbose.

Chapter 3: The Java language Structure:Instance / static methods / variables, constructors, static initializators.Blocks, native, abstract and synchronized methods, packages. The examplepresented (a card playing game) is huge, definitely only for advanced,experienced programmers - later chapters always reference it. Introducingthe inheritance is as of high quality as in Linden's book.

p. 37: whendiscussing the protected modifier, forgets to mention that it's actuallylet's strict than the default visibility - only mentions subclasses (on p.39 it's already OK).

The C++ and even Smalltalk, Scheme remarks are greatin the book.

Chapter 4: Memory and Constructors: garbage collection etc;mentions there are no local (stack) objects; constructors; overloading themand default constructors; super/this - good explanation of the need forexplicit super(). The app presented here multiplies very longnumbers.

Chapter 5: Interfaces as Types: a tree sort app: sorts linesfrom a file using a binary tree.

Chapter 6: Arrays: ref. arrays,multidimensional arrays; mentions anon arrays (very few books do the same!- fails to mention that it's 1.1+ though).

p. 105 contains a section thatshouldn't have been included here. The authors try to put an object of asuperclass in an array of its subclass and waste 1.5 pages on showing theuser that it doesn't work. As the static type is of a subclass (Y), thedynamic type is X (superclass), you shouldn't be able to put the X objectin the array - this is what this problem means, and not the very sloppyexplanation that the authors wrote. They should have discussed typecompatibility between super- and subclass objects instead (yes, my favoritesubject that no Java books seems to show the readers - after all, this iswhat type compatibility is all about). After the concepts are understood,the reason why the program presented fails should be natural. Think of it -if the runtime system tried to access a superclass object's non-existingfield somewhere on the heap because the compiler only knew that it was oftype subclass, you could access memory after the object - this would resultin memory corruption.

Chapter 7: Exception handling: good introductionand comparison to C (why it's error-prone and ugly to handle errors in thenormal path of a program and using unique return values).Try/catch/throw/finally/throws; distinction between unchecked and checkedexceptions. Explains why Throwable is suitable to be thrown (it provides aslot for a message and contains a stack trace).

Chapter 8: Input/output:p.117: "the C printf() ... can crash if the wrong type is handed to itat runtime" - this is an offtopic subject, but, as I'm an 'evangelist'of much clearer and comprehensible books, I should write down how old Cbooks introduced stuff like 'How can you understand the easiest way whatthe order of the staked arguments are and what sets back the stack pointerafter returning from any function?'. This topic is, of course, not asimportant today as Java can't have varargs - but is still a good example ofhow a C book should be written.

Back in the old days of MS-DOS, not eventhe oldest C compilers that did not check the types / number of argumentsin the format string crashed the running program. It's (let's say: thiswas, as those good old days are over) just the question of good argumentorder on the stack and the caller's setting back the heap pointer whenreturning from the function call. At least this is what you can except froma well-written (even ancient) C compiler under operating systems thatdidn't have memory protection (MS-DOS, for example). Newer / betteroperating systems (Unix, Windows) of course do crash the program if itissues a read from a non-accessible memory area (segmentation fault /access violation). Ok, now let's back to the original subject

The chapter introduces wrapper (filtered) streams just atthe beginning - this intro is very well written, much better than that ofmost books in this review. The example section contains the following fullexamples: file copy (FileInputStream / FileOutputStream with 128-bytechunks); an app that does the same by using readLine() / println(), an appthat reads a token at a time (presenting StreamTokenizer) and an app thatappends a file to the end of another one (RandomAccessFile + seek() +writeBytes(inputFile.readLine()).

The chapter, on the other hand,doesn't show examples of DataInputStream / DataOutputStream. What is more,on p. 130 I found the following: "Java does not provide direct supportfor reading and printing user-defined objects. You must implement your ownmethods to do this." - that's all, no word on ObjectInputStream /ObjectOutputStreams. It's a lethal flaw in the book.

Chapter 9: Runtimetyping and class loading: speaks of type compatibility, again a goodC++-remark: "C++ did not have this feature [type info] - calledmanifest types - but so many people ended up creating their ownruntime-type information that the designers added it to the language".p. 136: as with Thinking in Java, this book also mentions explicit typecastis checked. The first sentence that introduces this subject mentions thereis some difference between C (!), C++ and Java - but then, doesn'texplicitly state what the difference really is.

Speaks of class loaders(doesn't emphasize how applet classloaders work), Class, newInstance(),forName().

Chapter 10: JNI: 28 pages.

Chapter 11: Threads: p. 172: abit misleading presentation of what a run() method can have: "callsynchronized methods and do whatever the thread needs to do". Why thesynchronized?!

Good explanation of Thread/Runnable; it's at introducingsynchronized that quality starts to erode: the example isn't verycomprehensive. Also explicitly shows how synchronized code blocks must bedefined - unlike Waite's Java 1.2 How-To. On the other hand, there is nowait/notify in the book at all.

Chapter 12: Inner classes: a greatchapter. One of the three chapters that are indeed great in the book. Makesa clear distinction between local, member and anon local classes; discussesvisibility and scoping very well; also discusses static member classes. Theexamples are very comprehensible. The big example (35 pages) is also ofhigh quality (a pattern-matcher application).

Chapter 13: Collectionclasses: also a well-written one, although Thinking in Java's chapter onCollection classes is much superior to this one. The introduction is a bitdry, lacks real benchmark results, but has class hierarchy diagrams. It'sthe example that makes this chapter also great: handling (modification /equality testing of) large strings. I gave a 5* to this chapter mostlybecause of this application, as the introduction - as I've said - is muchmore inferior to that of Thinking in Java.

Chapter 14: Reflection: justgreat. The app presented here is a LISP compiler.

Chapter 15: Putting theLanguage Pieces Together: the calculator example presented here uses Polishnotation as the input - with a little work, it could have been rewritten touse the usual operator order.

Chapter 16: RMI; Chapter 17: JDBC:tolerably well written chapters - nothing particular;

Part 2, Chapter18: Introduction to Applets: p. 401: "the only thing an applet reallyhas to do is define a paint() method" - wrong, if you don't haveanything to draw - e.g. you only have G

A good book for the intermediate/experienced programmer
I found this book to be a useful reference. I wouldn't recommend it for someone wanting to learn the language from scratch, but if you are already an intermediate/experienced Java programmer (like myself) and want to learnabout some of the more interesting Java features (reflection, innerclasses, etc) then this book is good. You have to be willing to build uponthe techniques shown here, but as it says on the back of the book, its notdesigned to teach Java programming. ... Read more

A POWERFUL Book!
This one should have NEVER gone out of print!The timeless truths in it I used extensively in my book "Prayer Steps to Sernity," just naturally, these truths came forth to my mine.

A Tale for Those on Their Own Tough Road
Lately I've been reading books about the troubles and travails of others, in part to explore my own, I guess. This book touched me, even tho I'm not a Mom. Read this book - reconnect with your pleasant childhood; pull yourself to a better place. I had a better childhood, then trouble later. I'm getting back to that better place, finally.

Another book in a similar vein is "Kingdom of Simplicity". It's just out. The story revolves around a young Amish boy growing to manhood, and facing the challenge of forgiving himself. Eli, the novel's protagonist, must come to grips with this, and discover what he truly needs to give. It's a Romance, in the truest sense of that term. Emma loves Eli, but he cannot see it, much less accept it, until he can forgive, and learn to love himself in all his human frailty.

A Modern Day Ruth?
I belong to a Christian Women's Book Club.Our first selection was this book.At first, the whole idea of this book, a modern day retelling of Ruth, was hard to get by brain around.Ruth in Las Vegas?Naomi a Mennonite- a fallen Mennonite, at that?It was just too weird.The authors kept true to the story of Ruth, for the most part, though, even using US place names that match the place names in Israel, and character names that arre the same. Through harrowing adventures on the road, and lots of time in a car, the relationship between Naomi and Ruth is solidly and lovingly formed. The beginning is rather laborious, but if you stick with it, the end of the story is so mcuh better, and makes it worth the read.

For anyone out there and I mean man or woman who has travled through this
life with thoughts that they were never worthy of anything, please read
this book it was written for you. One of the best books I have ever read.
The world needs more books like this.

A huge disappointment
I'm surprised by the positive reviews this book garnered.
Fiction based on the Biblical narrative is a powerful draw for me - especially one based on my namesake.The Book of Ruth is rich and deep; It's about jealousy for God, about a woman who turns her back on the worldly influences she grew up in and became beautiful inside. The climax of the story is that this transformation, mostly internal, attracts an upright, Godly man. The Biblical Ruth is a template of the woman we should strive to be - obedient, teachable, loyal, humble, wooed by God and with a servant's heart. None of these elements (except perhaps loyalty) are part of Tenney's book!
In "The Road Home" Ruth is not drawn to God by Naomi's faith walk, she just likes the "comfort" of Naomi's family life (Naomi doesn't even have a recognizable relationship with God through most of the book). While the journey home in the Biblical narrative takes up about 1 verse, Tenney wastes three quarters of the book on a road-trip that does more to ruin the character of Ruth than redeem her. At the end of it, she is perceived as a worldly-wise, self-protective, hard woman instead of one gentled by the love and protection of God. Boaz, instead of being a Godly man in his community, is the once-Mennonite, now who-knows-what owner of a large flea-market called "The Green Dragon" (a detail that Tenney should have avoided - since dragon is an alternate name for Satan in the Bible and no Godly man would choose to call his establishment by such a name). And there is no attempt to draw parallels between the laws God provided (and Boaz honored) to protect the poor in a Godly community to similar provisions in the Amish community.
This plot had some potential but none of it was realized. It should have been about a heart changed by the Love of God. It could have been about a Godly community that wrestles with an outsider. It might have offered hope to those healing from early sexual abuse (instead this sub-plot seemed thrown in simply for shock value). Why Tenney chose to make it a road trip book about an unredeemed woman is beyond me.
Even the writing lacked excellence.
I recommend you read Francine River's book "Unshaken" if you want an excellent fictional adaptation of the Ruth Story.

A novel with a powerful message.
This novel by John Bevere weaves an amazing tale of suspense and drama throughout with a needed message for all of us today. This book not only impacted me in a powerful way, but also all I know who have read it in very personal everlasting ways.

Twists,Turns, and a Powerful Message
This is a well written story with some important lessons.

During the first part of the book, I was almost ready to call it quits due to the message it seemed to be conveying.It appeared to be giving the impression that a Christian can accept Christ and after that just do pretty much anything that he/she wants to do without consequences.

I even discussed it with a Christian friend and told him that I did not know if I would even finish the book.I decided to give it some more time, and I am glad that I did.

The story features Denver mega church pastor Alan Rockaway who seems to be far away from God.He divorced his wife (without Scriptural cause) and then got involved with a young woman from the worship team.He had convinced himself that it was God's will.It was at this point that I thought this was going in a bad direction.

Fortunately, the authors surpised me and had some solid Christian teaching interwoven with an exciting plot.

When I again spoke to my friend a day later, he asked again who the author was.I told him that one was named 'Bevere'.He asked, 'John Bevere?'When I told him that it was, he said that he could have told me that the plot would not continue in the way that it seemed.He was quite familiar with that author and told me about a couple of his other books, which he indicated are very solid.So, not only did I end up enjoying this story, but I got a couple of other recommendations that I am looking forward to reading soon.

This is definitely worth getting.It is very thought provoking.It will likely cause readers to do some self examination and hopefully commit to not being merely nominal Christians.

Powerful message -- not what it could have been
I had never heard of John Bevere before. I stumbled upon this book while following the reviews of another reviewer. I was further drawn to it by the subject matter and glowing 5 star ratings. I understand the 5 star reviews, but despite the powerful message I didn't think it was a knock out of the park.

The book is not well written. Dialog was ok, but often the descriptive paragraphs just weren't worded well. As another reviewer noted, lines like "A viselike grip clamped down on his heart like it was no more solid than a damp washcloth" leave you wondering who's writing this stuff. Another big problem is that none of the characters are likeable for most of the book. This may have been planned since the message requires flawed characters, but it comes across more as poor character development. Throw in some unnecessary plot holes and it really tempts you to stop reading. The only reason I stuck with it was because I knew there was a spiritual message and I wanted to see how it played out. I suspect many readers would give up.

The sub accident happens early, trapping the main characters at the bottom of the sea with less than an hour of air and little hope of rescue. Realizing death is imminent they begin filming goodbye messages where many come clean about their lives. Interspersed with this drama we get lengthy flashback sequences to fill in the backstories. About a 1/3rd of the way through we get to the main character's critical flashback. It's only at this point that you begin to feel some sympathy for him and get some investment in the story as a result. He's still not likeable, but he is understandable now. This was one of the books strong points as the authors were adept at building a real person and fleshing out his progression of believable-but-poor choices. It's also around this time that the book becomes a real page turner as you just have to see how it plays out. It's not as surprising as some others have suggested. You will suspect how it finishes, and you will probably be right, but that doesn't diminish the impact of the message.

By far the most powerful section of the book is a dramatization of the after death experience, including the Great White Throne Judgment. I'd say it's impossible for a Christian to not be deeply affected, and it will probably shake up most anyone who reads it. The authors did a tremendous job blending scripture right into the dialog. Christ often speaks exactly as recorded in Scripture, but it never once feels stilted. You imagine yourself right there. This section alone makes it worth the effort to read the book.

That said, I was *very* disappointed at the end of the book. The story is sobering. I was on my knees afterwards. I suspect many others will have the same experience. You're left emotionally drained, hungry to make sure you are right with God and eager for direction. When I saw the note from the author at the end I expected just that; a heart for men's souls and pastoral guidance. Instead, Bevere waxes eloquent about how many have been impacted by his book, with one pastor really stepping up to the plate and buying thousands of copies to distribute. He follows with a plug for one of his other books, then we get a few pages of testimonials about how great and life changing "Rescued" is. I was struck that the protagonist in the story I'd just read had "cult of personality" issues, and here Bevere seems to be feeding his own cult as soon as the story is over. He did leave his website address, which I visited expecting (albeit, half-expecting at this point) to find some worthwhile help. Alas, the site is mostly a storefront selling his wares and asking for donations. I found nothing useful that was freely accessible. It makes "Rescued" feel like just another piece of a "total evangelism" kit from Bevere Incorporated, and leaves a sour taste that's really hard to get over.

And all that makes this a difficult book to rate. Taken as casual fiction it's not well written and has an amateurish feel. Taken as a spiritual work it succeeds in delivering a powerful, critically-important message, although it ultimately falls short of its potential. The message is 5 stars, but I'm subtracting two stars for poor writing and lack of follow through at the end.

I did order the book Bevere plugs ("Driven by Eternity"), because I wasn't ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Maybe I'll feel better about him after reading it.

This was an interesting read from the very beginning, but the apparent sanctioning of certain human weaknesses led me to almost stop reading the book.I kept reading just to see if the book kept up with the acceptance of that which was bothering me.Towards the end of the book the sin was recognized, supported by scripture.I went from almost not finishing the book to wanting to purchase it for my unsaved wife and a couple of my saved children.I highly recommend it.

A reality check for us who call ourselves "Christians"
Rescued is a powerful reality check regarding what Jesus meant when He offered Heaven as our home for all eternity. This novel, with a surprise ending, will cause "Christians" to realize that Jesus was radical as a teacher, calling his disciples to love God with all their being and their neighbor as themselves. His teachings run counter to every culture. His call was to love Him passionately and obey His Word.

Inspiring, Rich in Old Testament History
Simply put, I loved it!!From page one I was caught up in the story of Queen Esther. The book flowed flawlessly and was rich and concise.Just Perfect!!

What a facinating book!I love reading these types of books where you get the author's interpretation of a real Biblical character with authentic historical background.There is a follow up to this book but can't remember the title.I'd give this book AAAAAAAAAA++++++++++!!!Highly recommended!
