Product Description

Things have been strange for Jamie Park since the death of his mother a few months ago. He doesn’t fit in at school, and it is difficult to talk to his father, a well-known Korean scientist. Now things are getting stranger: His aunt Louise has written him a letter. The trouble is, he never knew he had an aunt, let alone an aunt Louise. But when she shows up at the door and invites him to leave Seattle and spend the summer with her, he impulsively accepts.

Her isolated cabin, somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, lacks both electricity and running water. But Jamie soon learns to appreciate the near-wild existence he shares with his unusual aunt. He spends his mornings gathering food and chopping wood and his afternoons running. His happy routine is disturbed, however, by the unexpected arrival of two strangers, the shadowy presence of wolves, and the disappearance of Louise. A finely carved bone flute that she has taught him to play seems to be the key to these strange occurrences. Gradually he realizes that there is a purpose to his visit, and as he exposes the truth, Jamie risks his own safety and faces a life-transforming decision.

In an extraordinary debut novel, Catherine Creedon skillfully blends a touching coming-of-age story with the wonders of a natural world filled with inexplicable mystery.

4-0 out of 5 stars adventure, adventure, adventure
This book is confusing to me all I get about the book is that, The boys Mom died and his Dad lives kinda far away, and the Dad sends him letters and the boy snifs them. His leg also got crushed by a rock.I recomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be sure to read BLUE WOLF.
Life has been difficult for Jamie Park since his mother died. While he finds some level of comfort running on his track team, the absence of his workaholic scientist father only makes life more complicated. Then one day Aunt Louise, a relative whom Jamie has never heard of, invites him to spend the entire summer with her in her isolated mountain home in the Pacific Northwest. Jamie accepts the offer, and his adventure of a lifetime officially begins.

Upon his arrival, he quickly finds out that life is going to be quite different. Louise's dwelling place is a one-room cabin with no plumbing or electricity. Despite this, Jamie excitedly listens to his aunt's nature and survival lessons. A number of peculiar events soon transpire, causing Jamie to be conscientious of an alliance he feels with a neighboring wolf pack. He then learns the truth behind the visit and a major secret about his family. Will Jamie return home, or will he stay with his aunt?

If I were Jamie, I would have decided to come home because I would have missed my family and friends. If you enjoy reading books with animals and a plot containing elements of mystery, be sure to read BLUE WOLF to find out what happens to Jamie and his family.

Product Description
The Whangdoodle was once the wisest, the kindest, and the most extraordinary creature in the world. Then he disappeared and created a wonderful land for himself and all the other remarkable animals -- the ten-legged Sidewinders, the little furry Flukes, the friendly Whiffle Bird, and the treacherous, "oily" Prock. It was an almost perfect place where the last of the really great Whangdoodles could rule his kingdom with "peace, love and a sense of fun"-- apart from and forgotten by people. But not completely forgotten. Professor Savant believed in the Whangdoodle. And when he told the three Potter children of his search for the spectacular creature, Lindy, Tom, and Ben were eager to reach Whangdoodleland. With the Professor's help, they discovered the secret way. But waiting for them was the scheming Prock, who would use almost any means to keep them away from his beloved king. Only by skill and determination were the four travelers able to discover the last of the really great Whangdoodles and grant him his heart's desire. Julie Andrews Edwards, star of stage and screen, has written a unique and beloved story that has become a modern classic. The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is sure to continue to delight readers everywhere. This edition includes a new foreword by the author. ... Read more

Product Description
“… a fun and readable book that engages the imagination and retains the interest of the clinically oriented reader while conveying an understanding of the direct implications of molecular characteristics of infectious agents to the practice of medicine..” –Emerging Infectious Diseases, January 2010

“… provides a valuable overview of the basic principles and issues pertaining to the pathogenesis and prevention of infectious diseases. The illustrations, the chapter summaries with relevant information, and the case studies are all particularly useful for the targeted readers. The book is well designed and manages to convey the general concepts of the various aspects of infectious diseases without overwhelming the reader with too much information… recommended for students, trainees, or physicians who desire a well-illustrated textbook that is easy to read and that addresses the basic aspects of infectious disease.” –Clinical Infectious Diseases, 2010

The study of infectious diseases has undergone major changes since its infancy when it was largely a documentation of epidemics. It has now evolved into a dynamic phenomenon involving the ecology of the infectious agent, pathogenesis in the host, reservoirs and vetors, as well as the complex mechanisms concerned in the spread of infection and the extent to which this spread occurs. Rapid globalization has led to unprecedented interest in infectious diseases worldwide and their effect on complex population dynamics including migration, famine, fire, war, and terrorism. It is now essential for public health officials to understand the basic science behind infectious disease and, likewise, students studying ID must have a broader understanding of the implications of infectious disease in a public health context as well as clinical presentation and prevention. The clear demand for an integrated approach has led to the publication of this text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decided against it...
I considered using this text for a new course I was teaching in Infectious Diseases, and although I was very excited to see the book, in the end I decided against it for several reasons.First, compared to other text books it is next to impossible to find anything in it without using the index; the TOC has only chapter titles, so if you are looking to find information on a specific disease (other than one of the biggies), good luck. Also, the chapter numbers are not given in the page headings in the book, so you are never quite sure where you are. Finally, and most importantly, for a book from 2009 I found statistics from 1998 being cited (when I know something more current must exist).I did use it on several occasions as a reference & for this it was OK, but overall, it seemed really user un-friendly & I couldn't justify asking my students to pay $150 for it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of potential not realized
The story idea seemed really good and the illustrations are great, but the actual story let me down.Seems it was missing many details and things just happened all of a sudden or for no reason. To me it just seemed like half of the story was missing, they needed to have about twice as much narration and text as they did to make the story flow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations-Disappointing Story
This book has amazingly gorgeous illustrations. They really are incredible. The story itself is a novel shortened into a child's picture book. There are huge plot holes and gaps. My four year old twins have so many questions when we read this book that I try to hide it from them! They have been exposed to a lot of fairy tales and when this story doesn't make sense they are frustrated along with me. I assume that this story makes a great novel. Rewritten into a picture book, it just doesn't work. Every time I read it I want to rewrite it myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Christmas Story
This is a very nice Christmas story for your little ones that is beautifully illustrated. My kids really enjoy listening to it, and it is a pleasure to the eye as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Illustrations, boring story
This book has the most lovely illustrations. Each page is a feast for the eyes with many tiny, wonderful details to discuss with your child as you read it. But the story itself falls flat. Miss Ryan's style of storytelling is just matter of fact, boring, no lovely descriptions to match the wonderful artwork. I am a children's librarian and the book keeps being checked out and returned in a day or so because each and every child has told me they didn't like the story or they couldn't even finish it because it was too long or not interesting enough. With the name of Julie Andrews attached, I really expected more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful addition to your Christmas collection
I own the novel version of The Legend of Holly Claus, and I fell in love with it. I have now been re-reading it every December, to re-experience the magic and to get into that Christmas feeling.

Brittney Ryan's narrative is compelling and heart-warming, and it is simple enough for most children to read, though many adults will adore this story as well.

I have yet to purchase this book, but I feel it is simply the condensed version of the novel, along with gorgeous accompanying illustrations. I greatly admire Laurel's artwork, in its detail, delicacy, and the ability to let the viewer sit for long periods of time just taking in the nuances within the art.

They have gone further with this novel, adding full, vibrant colour to each work of art (since the original illustrations in the novel are black and white), which further enhances the reading experience for children and grown-ups alike.

Lovely story, lovely art.. and brimming with Christmas spirit. What more can be said? I highly recommend this for every parent, book fanatic, and Christmas lover alike! ... Read more

Dumpy's back! The beloved little truck, saved from rust and weeds in Dumpy the Dump Truck, the first team effort of Julie Andrews Edwards, Emma Walton Hamilton, and Tony Walton, is shined up and ready to tackle his first big job off the farm. And it just so happens that today is a big day for his young friend Charlie, too. It's Charlie's first day of school. Dumpy has bubbles in his radiator, and Charlie feels his stomach flutter as they each think about what lies ahead. Will they succeed? Will people make fun of them? As it turns out, both Dumpy and Charlie do quite well. Charlie makes some new friends, trades sandwiches at lunchtime, and wins the respect of all when the kids realize it's his dump truck that's building the new playground. And Dumpy, after feeling a bit puny and insignificant next to the huge yellow and black monster machine, saves the day when Steady Gus the School Bus breaks down.

Julie Andrews Edwards is the author of the The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles and Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea and, of course, the star of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Product Description

When terrible weather hits Apple Harbor, Charlie, Pop-Up, and Dumpy rush to get ready. But they`re not the only ones who are busy-Stinky the Garbage Truck, Tommy the Tow Truck, and Big Red the Fire Engine are all out working in the storm, and Saucy Sue, a fishing boat, is stuck out to sea. With quick thinking and teamwork, Dumpy, Charlie, and all of the trucks make their own `lighthouse` on top of the bluff, and guide Saucy Sue through the big storm. Julie Andrews Edwards is one of the most recognized figures in the world of entertainment. Perhaps best known for her performances in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and Victor/Victoria, Julie is also the author of several favorite children`s books, including Dumpy the Dump Truck, Dumpy at School, Dumpy and His Pals, Dumpy and His Friends on the Farm, and Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea. Emma Walton Hamilton is a Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, New York, where she lives with her husband and young son, Sam, whose passion for trucks was the inspiration for this series. Tony Walton, winner of three Tony Awards, an Emmy, and an Oscar, is a world-renowned set and costume designer for the theater and film. Mr. Walton`s nostalgic artwork evokes the beauty of the American farm and lends a classic feel to the Dumpy books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Dumpy Adventure!
Here is another Dumpy story with just the right amount of action, suspense, and the slightest hint of danger, as well as lots of vehicles, for little boys to enjoy. My 4 year old loves Dumpy books and this one is no exception! The illustrations are bright and the text is substantial--not dumbed-down for small
children. We look forward to more Dumpy books in the future!
