Let me tell you a story of To-Day,--very homely and narrow in its scope and aim. Not of the To-Day whose significance in the history of humanity only those shall read who will live when you and I are dead. We can bear the pain in silence, if our hearts are strong enough, while the nations of the earth stand afar off. I have no word of this To-Day to speak. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book!!
This was wonderful book about my era! I enjoyed hearing the life experiences of all the girls. I can recommend this literary achievement to anyone, young or old. Laura was certainly my favorite and most entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tantalizing Read
I loved The Girls from Winnetka. In fact, I couldn't put it down; I read it in two days non stop.I just had to find out what happened to eachof the women. In fact, I plan to read the book again so I can appreciate more deeply each girl's life history.

Marcia Chellis really captured what it was like growing up in the fifties and beyond. We were so inhibited and programmed toward motherhood and pleasing others, especially the expectations of men.I am so happy my daughters are the beneficiaries of the women's movement and feminism's emphasis on being independent working women.

What's interesting to me in this book is that all the women did free themselves from traditional roles, elected to work in some capacity, and sought out meaningful relationships even though for some it took several marriages to get there.

Some women endured loveless marriages, men who don't know how to compliment, and children who are caught up in the drug culture. The challenges of life do not defeat the women or the author as she graphically captures the passing decades.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no Such Thing as an Ordinary Life
"The Girls from Winnetka" chronicles the journey of 5 girlfriends in high school as they travel their distinct and different life paths through young adulthood into womanhood. What might be mistaken for a "chick book" clearly isn't. Rather it is a compelling story and study, really, of how we,women or men, face the joys, accomplishments, deep disappointments and,in many cases, the tragedies that lie in our path as we journey through life.
In an easy style of writing that keeps the reader engaged, Marcia Chellis tells this story against the backdrop of major trends and events that occered in the 50's through the 90's in this counry and the world. She demonstrates how such external dynamics, combined with the powerful impact of of each woman's parental/family values and practices powerfully influence the attitudes and actions of the 5 women.
It is hard to read this book and not reflect on one's own upbringing and the major events that shaped one's life. The potential benefits of such introspection are well worth the time expended in reading this excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blast From the Past!
A Blast From the Past!
Right from a glance at the cover, you'll beable to relate to this book if you are a woman around the age of 60 something. And if you are a younger or older woman, you may still get a kick out of this detailed picture that Marcia Chellis has painted of our generation...... the one between Mother Knows Best and Betty Freidan. Taken from the real lives of her friends starting in high school, she weaves a spell-binding tale of what their dreams were back then and how it has all turned out. If you love it like I do, write a review....it is a self-published book and needs all the publicity it can get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Echoes From The Past Sound Loudly
As a former classmate of these five girls I can still hear the resounding echo of their laughter through the hallways of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, Illinois.
This touching tale of five close friends takes the reader from the innocence of teenage years through the myriad of meandering pathways of life - intersected at intervals by college, love, marriage, family and careers.
Marcia Chellis has a unique talent which allows the reader to actively participate in their journey along these paths as each woman takes her turn revealing her own moments of awakening, joys, sorrows and doubts.
We can each learn from these remarkable women, who came to grips with the vast social and political upheaval of recent years, to finally achieve independence and liberation.
"you've come a long way.....".. and, indeed, you have. ... Read more
