Complete Book of Plums
Plums are very diverse in their plant characteristics and fruit. There are close to 30 plum species named in this book and that does not include a number of wild plum species in other parts of the world. No other group of stone fruit has so many species.
These diverse species have great differences in fruit color from red to yellow to orange to blue to black. The size of the fruit varies from very tiny to extremely large. The flavor of the flesh of the plums ranges from very sour to intensely sweet: from very juicy to very dry. The fruit can be very firm or very soft. The trees range in height from very small dwarfs of 3 or 4 feet to huge trees of 45 feet. The leaves vary diversely from very large, long, slender, tiny, round and many shapes in between.
The diversity of plum species is shown in the different types of plums. There are Japanese plums; Domestica plums like the Mirabelles, Damsons, Bullaces, Green-Gages and Prunes; Soles; Cherry Plums and American native plums, not to mention all the hybrids.
Some plums originated in Europe, some in Asia and many native species originated in America. There are few places in the Northern Hemisphere that you cannot find a native plum species.
This is a very large book with many pages of full color pictures of plum varieties.
