5-0 out of 5 stars Real world "how-to" that works
No other info I have ever obtained has so profoundly improved my ability to plan, manage, and deliver work in both my career and home life.It (rightfully) almost totally ignores software p.m. applications and instead informs and instructs on the key factors in successful project management- estimating,organizing/planning,tracking,resource allocation, and the human factors. Simple and universal concepts and approaches that work!If you just want to play with cool looking p.m. software this book is not for you. If you need to learn the principals and techniques of successful project management, you can't do better than this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars a nice primer on project management
This book was a required textbook for a project management class I took online at Berkeley. I found the information, templates, and exercises very helpful in starting my path as a project manager.

I would recommend this book to those wanting to get the basics in project management, but remember that it is written as a textbook. ... Read more

Product Description
Over the past decade, science has made historic progress in identifying the genetic origins of human development and functioning. From Down syndrome to sickle cell anemia, hereditary cancers to neurologic conditions, genetic tests now exist for dozens of human conditions. Research on the human genome continues apace, and the already considerable demand for genetic counseling services can only intensify as new genetic tests become available. The first book devoted exclusively to the principles and practice of genetic counseling, A Guide to Genetic Counseling prepares genetic counselors and health care providers to meet that demand.

Reflecting the experiences and expertise of more than a dozen genetic counseling, medical, and legal professionals, this book defines the theory, goals, and core competencies associated with the practice of genetic counseling. Combining clear step-by-step guidelines with many fascinating and instructive case studies, it tutors readers in the gamut of skills, procedures, and ethical, legal, and psychosocial considerations integral to the genetic counseling process, including:

  • Obtaining family histories and interviewing clients
  • Performing medical genetic evaluations
  • Patient education and psychosocial counseling
  • Developing multicultural skills
  • Case preparation and management
  • Medical documentation
  • Ethical and legal conduct
  • Making the most of computer-based resources
  • Professional development.

A Guide to Genetic Counseling belongs on the syllabi of all medical and human genetics and genetics counseling certification programs. It is an indispensable working resource for professional genetic counselors and all health care providers charged with educating patients in genetic diseases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
As a graduating genetic counseling student, I have found this book to be highly valuable. It covers much of the practical information needed for genetic counseling, from how to run a session to psychosocial issues. It does not cover genetics, and is not meant to be that kind of text. This book is meant to be used in conjunction with genetic counseling classes and clinical training experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars really?
Caveat: i did not read the whole book.

Based on the chapters I did read: mind-numbingly dull and pedantic; condescending to both counselor and patient.

I think it would be reasonableto write a book on genetic counseling that departs from the premise that the audience has basic social skills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, great resource.
Easy to read, easy to follow. This book is a great resource for helping parents/caretakers of children with special needs become more self-supportive. I'd recommend it for anyone's personal library who may have young ones who are on the autism spectrum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every care giver should have one
This book makes a teacher out of every one who reads it. Whether you are a parent, guardian, relative, teacher of a child with special needs, this book will give you the tools to teach essential skills and enable you to use them effectively.
This book was recommended to me and I recommend it to every else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Brief
The book is formatted very well. It has helped me approach my child in a new manner with excellent results. Some of the tasks we take for granted are broken into smaller steps that can be overlooked. This book helps you identify missing steps and provides multiple methods of application. It isn't a "one size fits all" approach. It gives good ideas for praise and correction if consistently followed.

The page layouts are easy to read and the cartoons are cute. Everything addressed in this book has samples to serve as a guide for you. The appendices has more ideas for aiding with independence. Overall, the application of this book, used in a routine, is great for any age and any skill level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique
If you can take a topic like curling and make a fairly entertaining movie, I don't know why Hollywood acts as if they are out of ideas. This comedy was refreshing from the usual stuff that is churned out of the studios. It's about a Canadian curling team getting together after ten years. It's what their coach had in his will that he wanted who recently passed away. Leslie Nielsen becomes their coach. He toned his comic shtick down but he was still quite funny. I'm not familiar with the others but they played their roles well enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Watch the Movie, Instead
Like most novelizations, this book falls far short of the movie it recounts. While the movie is quirky and breezy, the book plods along.Much of the humor in the movie comes from quick, physical comedy or the actions and reactions of the excellent cast, and that translates badly to the page -- by the time the author reaches the punchline, the reader has lost interest in the joke. While the book fleshes out the roles of some of the characters, in many cases, much of the story works better with more left to the imagination of the viewer. It is clear why much of the additional information was left out, it does little to advance the story, and slows the telling.

Watching Men With Brooms is highly recommended, but don't waste your time (or money) on the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars (Almost) all you wanted to know about contemporary musicians
This is a good reference book, although it falls short of the intentions of its compilers. Roughly the same size as the Concise Baker's, it certainly could have benefited with the inclusion of more thorough worklists. Many entries should have been updated.

I had bought this bookmostly on account of what Laura Kuhn says openly in the Preface:"Entries contained in these pages are restricted to contemporary, classical musicians only, with complete work lists and carefully selectedbibliographies" "Pop and jazz artists, idiosyncratically coveredat best in previous editions of the Baker's, have been excised". Inview of such statement of principles, I felt somewhat short-changed. Incomparison with the Concise, there are many new articles - e.g. I had neverfound elsewhere entries for Kriukov or Pizzini, but conversely, there is nomention of composers perhaps better known than them, such as Glenn Brancaor Peggy Coolidge. In addition, I was surprised and outraged when I foundthat some contemporary composers appearing in the Concise had been deleted!Examples: Frederick Cowen, Alberic Magnard, Mikolajus Ciurlionis. I couldnot found one valid reason for their exclusion.

The coverage of filmmusic composers is quite irregular. While there are plenty of entries forfilm-only composers such as Elmer Bernstein or Alfred Newman, there is nomention of some of the most well known names such as Goldsmith, Barry, orDelerue.

In relation to the amount of information, too many of theentries are identical to the Concise Baker's, not having been revised, corrected or expanded. And about the pretence of"complete worklists", check for instance Roslavetz or Ivanovs, whose lists of worksare far from exhaustive. Ivanovs is said to have written 20 symphoniesrather than 21 and only two of his five symphonic poems are mentioned. The"selected bibliography" consists, in this case, of two books, themost recent being over 30 years old.

As to the excision of pop and jazzartists, a cursory check shows the presence of entries for CharlesAznavour, Jacques Brel, George Brassens, Miles Davis, Frederick Loewe, AlanJay Lerner, Michel Legrand, Bobby McFerrin, none of whom is credited withany "classical music" accomplishment.

The articles aresometimes idiosyncratic. For example, reading about Penderecki, there is nomention whatsoever of his Post-modernist about face in 1977, althoughperhaps this suggests that the article has not been revised after thatfact.

Kuhn explains in the Preface how a biographical dictionary is ameans to invent history: "Giving some room to some, more room toothers, ignoring the rest - displaying in both what is included and what isnot both the ignorance and the prescience of its compilers". Shementions length of the entries as the first in the list of compiler'sresources. Using this as a measure of importance in Kuhn's view, we can seewhat are the most important composers of the 20th century. What is yourguess for No.1? Debussy? Schoenberg? Stravinsky? Bartók? Webern? Wrong. Bya wide margin, her choice is Cage, to whose description by Slonismky sheadded "much beloved". Here is the ranking by the number of linesthat she devoted to the most outstanding composers (excluding their list ofworks): 1. - Cage (426 lines) 2. - Stravinsky (293) 3. - Schoenberg (286)4. - R. Strauss (187) 5. - Shostakovich (186). 6. - Debussy (184) 7. -Bernstein (167) Other composers that deserve more than 100 lines areScriabin, Varèse, Vaughan Williams, Prokofiev, Ives, Sibelius and Barber.Bartók, at 99, does not quite make it. The length of Stockhausen's articleequals David Raksin's.

In short, a good reference but a bit of adisappointment in the details. ... Read more
