5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantasy from Madeine Baker!
What a great book, love, duplicity, fantasy wolf change shifters, ancient prophecies and a great plot. What is not to love!It was good to see that Madeline Baker has the breath to write something other than Native American love stories.

I feel that this is one of her best works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!!
This is one of my favorite books!. Hardane and Kylene are wonderful characters and fall in love. Hardane, a shape shifter, is a wonderful man and falls in love with Kylene even though he is betrothed to her twin sister, or is he? they are twins after all. which one was really born first?, and they go through many trials to be together. A truly wonderful and imaginative book. I commend you Madeline Baker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure, Deep Romance.Beautiful and heart- melting.
The romance between the two main characters is so pure and unspoiled, I couldn't put the book down.I wanted to read more and more of it.The love scenes are actually quite tame, but the passion is through the roof. The characters are totally connected, even in thoughts and dreams.Beautiful story!
Plenty of excitement and surprise twists.Never once did the story get boring.
Excellently written, so you feel a connection with many of the characters of the story. You feel their losses and victories.
I have a new respect for Madeline Baker.

4-0 out of 5 stars my first M Baker book...
Wow! This was a great book, told partially from the mother's viewpoint, it still held me captive. I'm looking forward to finding the other books in this series.

4-0 out of 5 stars strong early Americana historical romance
In 1905, Black Owl went east to formally study veterinary medicine.Three years later, to the elation of his family, especially his mother, he has graduated and has returned to his home in Bear Valley to set up his practice.Blackie rents a facility from Joey McBride and begins offering his services though some of the Anglos reject him because of his Indian heritage.

Soon Joey and Blackie begin to fall in love. His family supports Blackie marrying Joey. By example like their parents did much earlier, his two older siblings have recently established mixed marriages. However, her side led by her grandmother and her brother remember the Little Big Horn; they prefer to run the Indian out of town.

Madeline Baker continues her strong early historical romance series with the engaging tale of the third child Blackie, who has adopted much of white heritage. The story line is loaded with Native American life that enables the audience to feel a period of major transition.Though the characters behave very typical of the sub-genre, including books by Ms. Baker, fans will fully embrace this warm exciting star-crossed romance while looking forward to the Daniel Blue Hawk's novel set in another decade or two.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a second read
I read this book many years ago when I snuck it out of my mom's book collection.I didn't remember much about it, but I thought about it over the years.I couldn't remember the name and I spent a lot of time and effort trying to track down the title, so that I could purchase it.I finally located the info and found a copy.I couldn't wait to reread it, but after reading it, I don't know what I saw in it.The story mixes in some reality with some fantasy, even though the entire story takes place apparently on another planet, but the characters are amazingly human-like.The heroine resists too much. The peaceful tribe of people the heroine comes from don't seem to have any real emotions except to be even-tempered and peaceful at all costs.Perhaps after years of reading romance novels, I have become jaded, but this book lost all of its original appeal for me, but at least now my curiosity has been satisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much fantasy is not a good thing!
I use to say I never read a Madeline Baker book that I didn't like .. until I read this one.How many times can a man be enslaved (by the same person) and escape!?And then again by a "flesh peddler"!!Three moons, unicorns, giants and a dragon?Gimme a break, not very believable at all.And the way the heroine speaks is very grating on the nerves "thy mother forgives thee, I thank thee, hold me then, for the night is coming and I fear the darkness".I spent a lot of time rolling my eyes while I suffered through this book - one of the worst romance novels I've ever read.I agree with the other reviewer who said Beneath a Midnight Moon is much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars an ok read
I like the book but I can't help but think that the heroine was too soft and didn't consider the feelings of the hero enough. I also agree with the last reviewer, there was lots of violence but not enough true romance.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much violence
I am going to be very unpopular here but I'm okay with it.I could not believe the violence in this story. Also, I never heard of a Maje and it is too incredible to even attempt to believe.People who heal the woundedand take their pain?Leyla made me angry at best during the entire story. How, after seeing how her man was treated by the different people, did sheinsist their lives be spared! Please!Jarrett has got to be the biggerfool to allow her to sway him. This was too much for me.I like storiesthat are believable. This was ridiculous.Even the ending didn't make itall worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL
This is so cool I just love the way this book was written.A love between Jarrent and Leyla is so strong nothing can part them, not even death itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One you will read again & again!!!
This was not my first MB book, but it is my favorite. The characters were beautifully flawed, but instead of giving up they found their strength in themselves and thus were able to be strong for each other & their shattered families. I re-read this book about once a year, if not more. This love story is enduring and everlasting.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a page-turner!!
I've read quite a few Native American romance novels, and Madeline Baker is by far my favorite author when it comes to this type of story. This book was really enjoyable. The characters were well-developed, interesting, and believable. The story line moved along and never became boring. However, if you like steamy, detailed "love" scenes, then you may be disappointed with this book, because there aren't any. The book was so well-written overall, though, that it didn't really matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fighting For A Chance
Morgan Slade has led a very sad and hard life. He was created from love but then became hated by his mother who felt she was abandoned by Morgan's father. Because of his mother disdain and loneliness of not having a mother's love, Morgan spends his life being a drunk. Carolyn "Carrie" Chandler is a spoiled rich girl fleeing an unwanted marriage. Carrie saves Morgan life and offers him money to help her get to her brother. Through trials and an unexpected attraction, love blossoms between them. This is an awesome read! It has a lot of twists and turns and revelations from both sides of Morgan and Carrie families that allows you a glimpse of whom Morgan and Carrie really are as people. Madeline Baker did a wonderful job showing Morgan going through withdrawl as he tries to rebuild his life. I truly felt for Morgan. He showed to be a man trying to change his life in spite of the circumstances of his birth. And Carrie showed that no matter what kind of life you led, if you don't have love... then you really have nothing. It's a keeper and I've read it many times!

5-0 out of 5 stars My firstMadeline Baker book but not the last!!
this was my first MB book book but definatly not the last. I loved Morgan even though he was a drunken Half-Breed and Carolyn, though very spoiled, was a wonderful character. Carolyn runs away from home and an aranged marriage only to find Morgan in an alley with a knife in his gut. She takes him to his home and helps him recover so they he will take her to he brother across the country and away from the marriage her father has set up. Along the way Morgan finds his dignity and most importantly he finds he is falling in love with "Carrie". They are captured by Indians and Morgan is given a chance to get away from the bottle and Make him self worthy of a woman's love. Carrie learns the there is more to life then parties and silk dresses as she falls in love with Morgan. She must convince him they they belong together before their families and unforseen dangers tear them apart.A truly inspiring book!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
I read the 2nd book first but that didn't lessen my enjoyment of this book. Jenny and Fallon were truly remarkable peeople and the book was a wonderful read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great first half...but not Baker's best.
The story got off to an exciting start - Jenny Braedon has been the captive of an Apache tribe and forced to be the second wife of their chief, Kayitha. One day, Ryder Fallon, a half Cheyenne, is also captured by the same tribe and held in their camp to be tortured after he was caught leading an Army group through their territory.Ryder survives the torture and is forced to be the chief's first wife's slave. The depiction of the Apache life and the daily struggles that Jenny and Ryder faced seemed very real and compelling, and their blossoming relationship had me hanging on each page. However, once they escape the Apaches, the book really disappointed me. There are a series of misadventures that follow - to include coping with the fact that Jenny already is married to Hank Braedon and feels she must return to him. Some scenes just seemed pointless - such as when Ryder gets picked up by some bounty hunters and the whole matter is resolved by the end of the same chapter.Madeline Baker has a great writing style - she makes her characters seem very real. This book started out very promising, but just didn't hold me until the end.I found myself skimming over parts just to get the book over with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Adventure and Great Storyline
Ryder Fallon and Jenny have both been captured by the Apache and resist assimilation into the tribe.Jenny was taken from a stagecoach while on her way to meet her husband.Jenny bribes the injured Ryder by taking care of him while he is recovering from severe injury by making him promise to take her with him when he is well enough to escape.During the months until the escape, Jenny learns that she is carrying the child of the Apache chief who captured her, a man she does not love. Her love for Ryder, however emerges and grows. When the night of escape arrives, Jenny goes into labor and Ryder delivers her son; however, he gives the child over to its father to save Jenny's life. The child's father, once he has his son, sets Jenny and Ryder free. What follows involves Jenny's plight to escape an unusual and eventually abusive relationship with her husband, her growing relationship with Ryder, and her turmoil as she tries to accept the loss of her first born child. The adventure is top notch and the love story is sound.Liked this book, so will look for the follow up "Chase the Wind."

Though she was born in the East, Kaylee Matthews took to the west like a duck to water. She loves the freedom of the wide open spaces, the beauty of the land. While riding with her neighbor, Randy, Kaylee discovers a wounded Indian. Against Randy's wishes, Kaylee insists on taking the Indian to an empty line shack and nursing him back to health, the way she did with the all the wounded creatures she found.

Wounded and left for dead, Blue Hawk is prepared to die even though it means abandoning all hope of avenging himself on the white men who betrayed him. While waiting for death, he receives a startling vision before losing consciousness. On awaking, he finds himself being tended by the white woman in his vision.

When he's strong enough to return home, Blue Hawk steals a horse and takes Kaylee with him, intending to trade her back to her family for weapons for his tribe. But somewhere along the way, distrust turns to love and attraction turns to desire, leaving them to wonder if they can heal old hurts and find a way to bridge the differences between them. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Unlikely story
Though the story goes along in the beginning at a realistic pace it continues by putting the male 'hero' in the most unlikely of spots, gives the Lokata credit for being loving and caring people and then allows them to do some of the most ghastly things imaginable.Even though the actions are somewhat understandable the two distinct side of the people don't work. The woman lead is exposed to all these things and they would be enough to make a her go insane. However, the final outcome of the story is so misquided in its premise that I simple gave up on the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring and Random
Lakota Love Song was not a bad story, it was just slightly disappointing. It had no creativity, the story plot was generally not exciting and it had taken me a long time to finish the book. Instead of reading the book on a regular basis because the story was so suspenseful, I found myself picking it up every couple days or even weeks when I was totally bored. I felt that I only finished reading it because I felt that now that I started it, I had to finish it or else it would constantly nag at me.

The romance between these two were strange, and not at all in a good, "unique love story" kind of way. They barely share any passion or kisses before they have intercourse. Not only that, but it felt forced and just randomly showed up into the book. There wasn't even a whole page to tell you that they were on the verge of being intimate with each other when all of a sudden he is "breaking her maidenhead." I didn't even know they were having sex until I read that line, "he broke her maidenhead" - that's how thrown in and random it was, I kid you not! Also, they shared one kiss (if I recall, two at the most if I am to be mistaken) before they all of a sudden have sex...? It was just strange coming from a romance novel. I mean, where is the suspense and waiting until they finally do it? I felt like the characters didn't even have enough time to make a genuine connection. They just were suddenly having sex within the first quarter of the book, nowhere even close to half way!

Much of the story was like this, as a matter of fact. Many explanations and descriptions were random, seemed like it had missing information, or just simply didn't make sense. It was almost as if the author had a brilliant idea and then had to find somewhere to stick it in the book.

This may be my own personal opinion, but I have read many romance novels and this one was really lame. It wasn't necessarily the worst one I have ever read, but it surely did disappoint. If I had to sum it up in a few words, I would call it boring, predictable as well as random and slightly confusing. READ THIS BOOK AT YOUR OWN RISK.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ugh!!
If I could've given this book no stars I would've.I couldn't finish it.There was just no kind of passion between the two main characters. The story just dragged and dragged.I kept hoping it would pick up but it didn't. Sorry!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lakota Lacking
I'm sorry but this book was very disappointing. I tried to like it, kept reading thinking it would get better...it had to. Well, it didn't! I've been reading these types of books since 1980 and have several I keep and read over and over...this was not one I would read again. It had no backbone, no substance! I thought the characters were predictable and weak. The romance part lacked passion and grit. After just reading "Comanche Moon" and "Comanche Heart" by C. Anderson, I'm surprised I was even able to finish this book. I have to say I am disappointed in Madeline Baker because I know she can do so much better. I'll still turn to her books, but I hope they aren't lacking like this one was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Native American novel with respect.
Lakota Love Song is a simple story of love. It is about a young white woman whom is full of compassion and acceptance whom falls in love with an equally compassionate Lakota warrior. It is not a steamy sexy romance but modest and sweet, something pure and innocent that should grab every heart. Kay-Lee ( how Blue Hawk pronounces her name which adds to the believable line) is not a spoiled sassy girl nor does the two fuss and fight. Blue Hawk is not an arrogant warrior that shows his superior by forcing Kay-Lee around. Instead they are compatible lovers stuck in a heartless world full of bitter revenge. Together they fight ignorance and brutality in order to be one.
The author done a wonderful job at describing the hatred the white inflicted upon the Indian race. She is also respectful toward the Lakota race as well as actuate in recreating battles.
I was really shocked as well as disappointed when I read some of the negative reviews from other readers. It seems ignorance and prejudice still prevail. If you are open minded and want to learn more about the Lakota and the history of Crazy Horse (Cheyenne) and enjoy vivid battles then this is the book for you. Again this is not a steamy erotic book which is all some people care to read, but very sweet. Don't get me wrong their love is very strong and the romance is about love not sex. Lakota Love Song will take your mind across the North West into the battle of Little Big Horn and leave your heart enchanted from a love so strong that the power of hate could not diminish. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Baker's best
A fast pace western romance about Martha, a responsible common looking woman that runs the household since her mother had abandoned her years before, and a half Apache gunman named Ridge Longtree, who talks and lives like a white man but possesses the instincts of his Apache kin.
Martha was not very likeable and the romance between her and Longtree just did not do it for me. It seemed made up, not sensational. I found myself hurrying through their boring parts to get to the secondary romance of the book between Martha's younger sister Dani, sweet and naive, and her Apache captor; Sanza, whom stole my heart. Sanza was sexy, brave, and powerful however he was passionate and understanding when it came to his beautiful white captive. With tender hands he taught her his people were not savages and that he could not give her wealth or a fine home but unconditional and faithful love.
There was also an underlying plot about the abandonment the sisters struggled with regarding their mother who returns when Dani is captured by the local Apaches. I found myself teary eyed as I sympathized with both sides.

4-0 out of 5 stars MAYBE A 4 PLUS - NO DANGEROUS TENSION
First review hits the spot.
Excellent writing - enjoyable story - danger not strong enough or really present.

Ridge Longtree is half Apache, fast gunman and dangerously good looking.
Martha Jean Flynn recognizes an attraction but fights it, her attitude for a 23 year old doesn't quite fit, bull-headed, stubborn and she can walk among the men and not get propositioned?

So much angst against the absent mother, Nellie - what really happened between her and her husband?
The will, the will - who gets the ranch now that Flynn is dead?
Who will Victor Claunch actually marry?
Who killed Seamus Flynn? Did he know his killer?

Her sister, Dani, appears to be flighty, and ready to fall into some man's arms.It didn't take Sanza long to seduce her.It just doesn't fit.

Sanza didn't rough Dani up even a little - doesn't make sense.Even if he was smitten with her he would have been a little agressive.

Still, a very enjoyable read - Will definitely recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under Apache Skies - Great Book!
This was the first Madeline Baker book I've read.I'm really partial to the Native American books so when I ran across this one I thought I'd give it a try.WOW, I couldn't put it down!I'll be shopping for some more of her stuff, it was great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Madeline Baker cooks up another winner!
Ms. Baker's novels are so well-researched and historically accurate that it's surprising to find that she isn't Native American herself. This book gives a fascinating insight into Apache culture set against a rich romance with characters both sexy and sympathetic. Highly recommend!

4-0 out of 5 stars fine western romance
Ridge Longtree is a highly regarded gunfighter, but is weary with no place to call home.Marty Flynn allows him to spend the night in the bunkhouse while she and her sister Dani worry that their father has not come home. When they find blood on her dad's horse, Marty hires Ridge because she believes their neighbor Victor Claunch bushwhacked her father.Ridge finds her dead dad.

Victor tells Ridge he will be unemployed once he marries Marty, who writes a letter to her estranged mother that her husband is dead and Dani needs her.Victor informs Marty she will marry him, but she avoids the topic by saying that her dad just died. That night Dani meets her beau Cory.Nettie arrives, but Marty fails to welcome her. They realize Dani is not home.Ridge figures out that Apaches have taken Dani and Cory.

Apache Sanza speaks English with Dani who he decides he will make his wife.Ridge and Marty follow. The Indians recognize Ridge from when he lived with them.He and Marty go to the Apache camp.Ridge tells Marty that Cory is dead.Sanza proposes marriage and Dani accepts.Ridge proposes to Marty who accepts, but first they must prove Victor killed her father and their mother feels she can.

The lead couple is a fine pairing that readers will enjoy because their growing love provides different types of redemption for them. The insight into the Apache relationship between in-laws is quite interesting. The villain is obviously sneaky which leads to readers wondering why townsfolk think highly of him. Though the estranged mother seems too innocent while the deceased father too guilty, fans will enjoy this exciting western romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars KINDA OF A GOOD STORY!
A very enjoyable read -
Cade Kills Thunder apparently was a hunky cowboy that Callie Walker wants on the cover of her next book.

Needless to say he is not thrilled with the idea.
Jacob Red Crow informs Cade that this red-head is the woman for him.
Even though she would dilute his Indian blood in their children.

Cade's appearance at the writer's convention with Callie becomes a bit hilarious. Her women friends want to put the make on Cade.

Callie finds herself falling under the spell of Jacob and is very much concerned with his health.
Cade is concerned that the life in Montana will never suit a city-girl.
He is a long haul truck driver but loves his ranch in Montana.

Very definitely a good read for such a short story

4-0 out of 5 stars He was gorgeous and he knew it...
Callie's Cowboy
Madeline Baker

Callie Walker thought she must have been hallucinating.Men like this only existed in the books that she wrote.Yet, he was standing right up there at the register.
He turned as if he felt her eyes on him.She realized she had been caught staring. Before, she could turn away to hide he winked at her and sauntered out of the café.

Callie decided to get back on the road and find her way to the town she was going to research for her next book. She didn't realize she was so tired and that she made some wrong turns.Next thing she knew she was being dragged from her wrecked car from her dream man or was he a dream.
His name is Cade Kills Thunder. He has just met the woman who can make him wish he was into marrying and staying home. However, he knew woman craved him.He had one in each town he drove his big rig. This was just one more woman he could woo and leave.Or could he.Maybe she might just turn the tables on him and give him a taste of her own medicine.

The characters are well developed by this author.
Even in such a short book this author makes her characters likeable and believable.
She makes the romance that happened in such a short time believable.
It was hilarious at times. However, it was still romantic without being overbearing.

Stalking Wolf ignites a fear of him in Caitlyn. However she is afraid of her own secret feelings. Then Indians killed Caitlyn's four brothers and she has a fear and hate for them. After the death of her father she has only a scolding look for Stalking Wolf. This is a very fast moving story by a new author to me. I will be looking for another book from her. By Ruth Thompson author of "Natchez Above The River" and "The Bluegrass Dream"

A great book by a great writer! Madeling Baker comes out with yet a nother wonderful book. I would recomend this book to anyone looking for adventure and romance.

... is wonderfully done.Caitlyn hates Indians for the killings of her brothers, and that means alll indians, even half-breeds, and even though she saved Stalking Wolf from the hangman doesn't mean he gets off scott-free with her.She has this wall built up around her than no man can penetrate, not even Stalking Wolf... or can he?For she cannot get him out of her mind and his proud bearing and hard body are drawing her defenses down.Madeline Baker is a truly wonderful where indian romance is concerned!

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to enjoy
HEART OF THE HUNTER, by Madeline Baker, takes up the bulk of this book.Description from Baker's website: "Kelly McBride, the owner of a Montana ranch, is torn between two lovers: a Lakota spirit warrior who guards gold, and his flesh-and-blood descendent. There seems no way possible for Kelly and the ghostly spirit to make a life together.Lee Roan Horse, an embittered ex-con, descends on the ranch to steal the gold of his ancestors, but finds in Kelly the love of a lifetime that he's afraid to acknowledge."

I honestly thought that this was her first book. One minute she loves Lee, then she doesn't, then he loves her, then he doesn't.Sentences were constantly repeated. It appeared as though the author was told to keep adding details to the story but there was nothing new so she rehashed the same words.

I felt there wasn't any chemistry between Lee and Kelly, ditto for the ghost and Kelly.I love time travel and paranormal books but I didn't enjoy HEART OF THE HUNTER; it ruined my chance to finish the other stories. This was one of the few books that I just couldn't continue reading.

According to Madeline Baker's website: Cerridwen Press is suppose to be releasing this title on it's own in January of 2010.Instead, if you want to read a wonderful time travel romance about the Lakota, try Judie Aitken's'A Love Beyond Time'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enchanted Crossings
I had read this book from the library in my former home in Greenville, Texas. When I learned that the Collier County, Florida library system did not have a copy, I decided to add it to my personal library. I like the "supernatural" element. It's a good, quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanted Crossings
All three authors outdid themselves.Madeline Baker's "Heart of the Hunter" has captured the essence of time and love once again. You won't be able to put this book down until you finish it!

Ann Avery's"Dream Seeker" was astounding!I have never read her work beforeand would like to read more of it now. She did a wonderful job of combiningthe depths of space and love. What a romantic!

3-0 out of 5 stars Variation
I've already read a variation on this story by another author which I thought was much better. With all the subject matter avaiblable I can't imagine what two ghosts of two different men in two different stories were hanged and became ghost to fall in love with a live woman

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love it
When i started this book i just couldnt put it down. From the start you get hooked...It took me just under a day to read it. If you read Chase the wind you'll love this book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgetable
This is the most recent of Baker's books that I have read and yet again I was blown away. She gave a great background and history about the real life ghost town of Bodie. The characters of modern day Shaye and badboy from the past, Alejandro were great. The point that I got was love is timeless. I haven't read a book by Baker that I haven't liked and I've read quite a few. I like historical romance and to me this book was great example. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a few facts while reading for pleasure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed reader
Madeline Baker is absolutely my favorite romance author and I was very eager to read Unforgettable. It's a time travel romance about a divorced woman named Shaye that travels back in time to the town of Bodie and falls in love with a gambler named Alejandro. I don't think it was a very romantic story and I learned much more than I wanted to about Bodie. It just wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but of course others are bound to disagree. Still, she is a good writer with a style of her own and I recommend A Feather in the Wind and Midnight Fire.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL! BAKER'S FINEST
Madeline Baker has written one of her finest novels yet! "UNFORGETABLE" is truly just that; the story of love and the characters are those you won't forget. The story is set in an actual ghost town of Bodie, California. Shaye Montgomery tours the ghost town and sees the ghost of Alejandro Valverde in the town jail, and he sees her. Shaye keeps returning and is finally transported to the 1880's boomtown where she meets the infamous Alejandro. Baker has added her own poetry"Time Passages"and "Ever After" to the beginning and end of the novel that gives a very special touch and meaning to the story. I just loved this time travel novel by Madeline Baker. ... Read more

THE BOOK WAS DILIVERED QUICK AND WAS IN GOOD CONDITION THE STORY GOT BORING HALFWAY THROUGH THE BOOK HOW MANY TIMES CAN A PERSON GET KIDNAPPED IT LOST ITS CHARM AFTER THE THIRD KIDNAPPING

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars
Lacey Montana was alone in the world except for her father, so when he was sentenced to twenty years in Yuma Penitentiary, she had no choice but to follow the prison wagon. The long trek across the plains had barely begun when things took a surprising turn: Indians attacked the wagon, kidnapping her father and leaving behind only one prisoner still alive.

Part Apache, part gambler, Matt Drago was no angel, but swore he was innocent of any crime. Lacey was frightened by the savage intensity she saw in his dark eyes, but helpless and alone, she offered to tend Matt's wounds if he would help her find her father. Stranded in the burning desert, desperation turned to fierce passion as they struggled to stay alive on their dangerous journey. Matt longed to possess his beautiful savior body and soul, but if he wanted to win her heart, he'd have to do it...Lacey's Way.
...................
This was an enjoyable book. Matt and Lacey make a good hero and heroine and are likable and sweet together. Lacey isn't the strongest heroine I've ever come across, but she isn't the weakest either, and in that way she seems more like a real person. There are many adventures in this book and it can be quite a fun journey to go on. Although it seemed to take forever to get to Matt finding out who committed the crime he was sentenced to, but there was plenty of other adventures to make up for it (like how many times did they get captured? LoL). It's the perfect light, fluffy romance if that's what you are in the mood for. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Two so-so stories, two really bad ones
From the back cover:

LOVING DEVLIN by Madeline Baker
For a half-breed Apache, love comes full circle as he witnesses the miracle of a Christmas birth, helping his woman bring forth her babe far from the comforts of civilization.

THE FOURTH GIFT by Elizabeth Chadwick
A determined woman struggles to rid herself of the Yankee partner who has brought out half her Arizona sheep ranch, but by Christmas morning the interloper has fulfilled the three wishes dearest to her heart, and given her a fourth gift she hardly dared hope for.

CHRISTMAS SURPRISE by Norah Hess
When a handsome stranger appears at her isolated farm looking for work, a lovelorn spinster finds the dark, dreary winter days become as bright and new as the Christmas surprise he brings her.

CHRISTMAS STAR by Connie Mason
Following her very own Christmas star through the wilds of Colonial Virginia, a beautiful orphan learns she had enough love to make three lonely people into a true family.

And my review:

Madeline Baker's story LOVING DEVLIN is actually a sequel to her novella LOVING SARAH, which was found in Leisure book's A FRONTIER CHRISTMAS collection. In this novella, the hero and heroine are already married and in love, awaiting the birth of their child. Like the first story, I didn't find this one all the captivating. The characters just never seemed very real or deep to me, and I found that I just didn't much care about what happened to them. They weren't awful or unlikeable, the just didn't grip me. And since they were already married and in love, there wasn't really much romantic tension to this story. Three stars.

I didn't get very far into Elizabeth Chadwick's THE FOURTH GIFT. It had a rather awkward, choppy feel to it, for one thing. The words just didn't flow together well. And I could not stand the heroine. She was such an annoying, abrasive harpy. I had no idea what the hero saw in her. Two stars.

Norah Hess' CHRISTMAS SURPRISE was probably the most enjoyable story in this collection. The author did a good job of portraying frontier life, and I liked watching these two misfits find love in each other. However, this wasn't a story you'd want to read over and over. It's good for a one-time read, and will give you a bit of holiday spirit, but it's nothing overly moving or memorable. Three stars.

Connie Mason's CHRISTMAS STAR was another story that I didn't finish. Neither the hero nor the heroine were likeable people. The hero was a bitter, twisted person, and the heroine a horrendous bigot. I can see why she might not like Indians, given that her family was killed by Indians, but to hate a child who's not even five years old merely because she's an Indian? That's despicable! The heroine's outlook probably changed by the end of the story, but her racist attitude quickly destroyed any liking I might have had for the heroine. And when you don't like either of the main characters, who really cares what happens to them? I didn't. One star.

Two of the stories in this book are okay for a one-time read, but neither of them is very stellar. Go ahead and buy this if you can find it at a garage sale or a thrift store. Otherwise, save your money for something better. See my list "Christmas romance books worth reading" for a list of my favorite picks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best!
A Wilderness Christmas: Discover the Old-Fashioned Joys if a Frontier Christmas is one of those short story romance anthologies that have several short romance stories by several different romance book novelists and this book was okay but not great. Some of the stories were good but there were some that were terrible. The best story was Christmas Surprise by Norah Hess. In this story a young woman named Jassy Jeffers is trying to keep her farm going and gets help from a drifter named Luke Slater. He saves her from a band of outlaws and winds up staying and helping her out on her farm and they fall in love. The story Christmas Star by Connie Maon was good, I liked the hero Jedidiah Wells (Jed) and I liked his adopted Native American daughter Star but I had a hard time warming up to the heroine Charity Marlowe because I didn't like how she treated Star and was annoyed at her reactions to her. I mean, I felt like saying, oh, she's a child, you are an adult, just grow up and stop being so rude and bigoted! The worst story was The Fourth Gift by Elizabeth Chadwick. I liked the hero Jonathan Forrester but I found the heroine Merrill Fox to be very weird! The Fourth Gift is about a weird spinster who is upset that she has a new business partner and half owner of her house and I just found her to be very weird. She was harsh, abrasive, rude and bigoted. I Just can't like an ignorant heroine who makes bigoted racist comments.

5-0 out of 5 stars discover the old-fashioned joys of a frontierchristmas!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read!!
I totally loved this book. In fact i think i enjoyed this one more then the first in the 2 part series.Maybe its because i read this one first. I didn't know it was a series till i read the reviews on it. I loved Chase and Beth. Dusty could have used some mellowing out in the middle but he came around in the end. I have read this book many times and will do so again i'm sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but predictable
I didn't even know that this book was a sequel until I finished it and read the author's letter at the end.But now I understand why the parents of the main characters in this book where given so much time.Apperently, they were the main characters in the original book, "Apache Runaway."
Truely, "Chase the Wind" isn't so much an Indian Romance. There are a few chapters in the beginning where the main couple are living outdoors, but after that it becomes very domestic. It actually gets a bit depressing at times because it so emphasizes how much the Apaches had lost and how they would never live freely again.
There were some boring parts where you wish that some excitement would start up finally.
On the good side, the scenes are well- written so you are able to picture them in your mind. The characters are likable. (Although the leading lady is a bit too dainty at times.)There are some exciting scenes to keep you reading.
The ending was a bit too much.Predictable and quite corny.Everyone in the story ends up finding love and getting married...and I do literally mean EVERYONE!But overall, the book was entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
Madeline Baker has done it again. This is the sequel to Apache Runaway and it is absolutely spectacular! This book had my complete and total attention.I recommend it for all romance readers. The many story lines in this book let your imagination run wild with what could happen. I don't want to let on to what happens because once you begin you can't put it down.In all her books there is never a dull moment. I am a very pleased reader with all her books, especially this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful.
