5-0 out of 5 stars Dixie snaps
The idea behind this interesting book (originally it was an exhibition) was to use photos to show how the South had changed in the decades after the Civil War.The 180 photos are from just over 106 named photographers and twenty-five anonymous ones. They are not just photographers from the South (Swiss born Ernst Haas is included) but all the images show the complexity of Southern life from the mid-1800s to 1990.

The majority of the early photos show colored family life mixed in with a few from the Civil War and white rural activity.I thought nearly all of these as photos of record rather than powerful creative statements. This sort of work starts with the FSA photos from the mid-thirties with an excellent selection from Evans, Shahn, Lange and Bourke-White.The post WW2 years have twenty on the politics of race covering the marches and battles with law enforcement with a few of white social life. The books ends with several pages of more personal observations work from now famous names: Friedlander; Christenberry; Callahan; Meyerowitz; Eggleston; Sternfeld. What I found missing and perhaps it wasn't in the remit of the exhibition, was an absence of several photos showing how the majority of the Southern white population lived, especially in the fifties and sixties when consumer prosperity spread across the whole country.

This is not just a photo book because someone had the bright idea of adding essays by seven authors to split up the decades.None of them are very long but I thought they provided just the right narrative to go with the photos that follow each essay.

I've had this book for some years and always enjoy looking through it.The design is simple and elegant with the photos printed in a 175 screen on a reasonable matt art paper. As an attempt to sum up an idea as much as a place I think it succeeds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty lame Southern gothic humor
I suppose this is meant to be a funny take-off on the Southern gothic novel, but it turns out to be a pretty lame knock-off of "Cold Comfort Farm" set in South Carolina. Not worth your time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shedding light on misty family secrets provides tense fun
The greenhorn history professor wants to make his mark, not to mention earn tenure. As if by divine providence, one of his not-so-outstanding students turns out to come from a family whose copious records just might lead to the next great revision of Civil War history. Our professor decides its time to charm his way into the Fennel family conclave -- only to find out it's a nautilus housing ghosts (both real and metaphorical) from the shameful past. ----- Baldwin creates a zany, comic set-up, wherein our hero must deal with the likes of a mysterious voodoo house-maid, a growing romantic attraction to his student, a knuckle-headed cousin who vies for her affections, and a family matriarch who insists that the Fennel family honor not be compromised by the research. ----- There is the invevitable sexual encounter with the student -- but was it?The supernatural starts enveloping this prestige-starved prof, and like an uncomig fog, keeps the reader peering for clues from the misty horizon of the story line. Both reader and narrator struggle with attempts to untangle from the Fennel family web.The experience is quite funny, but do watch out.Just as the humor hits full-stride, a sudden turn toward the terrifying occurs. There is something either evil or redemptive about Old Captain Jack's lighthouse on the rocky shoal! As the secrets of that Fennel beacon come into focus, you will find that this has been a most memorable family visit. ... Product Description
This striking photography collection from Vennie Deas Moore is a journey into the lives of individuals and families who call the South Carolina Coast home. With contributions from Lowcountry author William Baldwin, Deas Moore explores the joys and hardships of the people who continue to reside in this portion of the Lowcountry.

From the deck of a shrimp boat in the early dawn and the laborious work of harvesting oysters, to family gatherings and walks along windswept beaches, Deas Moore has compiled a photographic tour of the people, life and heritage that make the South Carolina Coast a matchless mosaic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Images that inspire like the delicate style of'40s '50s photography
Ms. Deas-Moore's dedication to her subjests can be seen the soul searching black and white photographs. This book conjures images of the vision of everyday American life, very much likephotojournalism did for post-war New York during the 1940s and 1950s.The industrial might of that era is instead replaced by the delicate natural bueaty of the southeastern coast and accompanied barrier islands coupled with all the history and culture they offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Photography
This book is wonderful and full of some really beautiful B&W photographs of some lesser known places in South Carolina. The author does a great job of expressing her thoughts through poetry in the book and relates it to her photographs.I really enjoyed reading about how the author traveled to Guinea, Africa, and her throughts about it.I highly recommend this book.Dr. Curtis R. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Jewel
I have a special interest in Mrs Whaley's Charleston Garden. Loutrel Winslow Briggs, the landscape architect involved in the design was my father's cousin. He did many gardens in Charleston and elsewhere. This little book is a treasure of southern charm including a few recipes.I keep several copies on my shelf just to share with friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Whaley's Garden does not disappoint!
Having recently had the opportunity to tour Mrs. Whaley's real Charleston garden, I was most interested to read her book about the creation of the garden itself. The book was delightful. It made me wish I had had an opportunity to meet her and talk with her.She was apparently a spunky, confident Southern lady who was never intimidated by anyone! The book talks about the creation of her garden, which amazingly still looks much like what she describes in her book. But the book is more than the description of her garden--it also relates details about her life in Charleston and about her philosophy of life as well. This is a book well worth reading. It is one I will keep and read again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely chat
Mrs. Whaley grew up in the same small village where I grew up. It was a thrill to read this book. If you aren't from the south it might be a southern thing, but talking about your roots and your people is a mainstay of southern lifestyle and conversation. I enjoyed the heck out of this little book and give it as gifts in baskets filled with other Charleston charms.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical gardening tips
A small town girl makes it big in downtown Charleston, SC without becoming part of the sophisticated establishment. She is refreshing and free in her opinions and plantings. From simple potted plants to ancient camellias and restful blue hues, Emily gives anyone a sense of peace in her garden. She relates the destruction of three feet of saltwater from Hugo in her garden and how nature bounced back with tender care.Enjoyment in her 80's is contagious for all ages.As I walk the sidewalks in April and see the lavender blossoms from wysteria, I think of young at heart Mrs. Whaley.

5-0 out of 5 stars southern delight
While reading this book, I felt as if I was sitting in a backyard garden on a lovely iron park bench with a glass of lemonade in hand, visiting with Emily Whaley herself.Opinionated, honest and full of Southern charm, Emily is a woman of character who has been blessed with the gift of gardening and a heritage of living right. When I first began reading, I expected gardening tips and descriptions of prolific gardens, which I was given.Yet delightfully surprising was having the lessons she had learned in her life unpretentiously and often humorously passed down to me by way of uncluttered recollections. She taught me to "find my own charms" in life and to "compete only with myself" to name so very few. This is one book I will certainly re-read the pages of often throughout my life. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Visual Dissapointment
Based on the cover of the book, and being a lover of all things about the Old South, I was anticipating a beautifully illustrated book in the tradition of Deborah Turbeville's "Newport Remembered" or "Versailles--Absolutism and Harmony" by Claire Constans and Jean Mounicq.I found a few interesting photos scattered through the book, but thought it was cast in a dreary light for the most part, and just plain awful in others.NOT a pretty cocktail-table book, if that's what you're looking for.Must admit, though, it is very informative. ... Product Description
The 85-year-old author of last year's book sensation "Mrs. Whaley and Her Charleston Garden" is back with her other favorite hobby--cooking delicious meals for guests. And she's just as "quotable" as ever. 100 recipes.Amazon.com Review
Charleston, that slightly starchy though gracious Southerncity, seems an unlikely place to have made a heroine of the decidedlyunstarchy Emily Whaley. Yet Mrs. Whaley's remarkablegarden was a standard stop for many years on the HistoricCharleston Foundation's annual garden tour, and Mrs. Whaley (who, despite her gregarious informality, had impeccable Southernbloodlines) was a popular social fixture, having founded theCotillion, the city's most upscale dancing school. Entertaining wasMrs. Whaley's second-favorite hobby, and Mrs. Whaley Entertainsis a slim, delightful collection of family anecdotes and timelessSouthern recipes, salted liberally with Mrs. W.'s strong opinions("Never serve anything to a guest that you haven't made successfullytwo or three times and made quite totally yours") and abundant goodhumor ("A good hostess simply wants you to enjoy yourself and won'tcare a whit if you refuse something as ungodly looking as anoyster"). Emily Whaley died in June 1998; this pleasant guide toSouthern hospitality is a fitting memorial. --Barrie Trinkle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We won't see her like again
I care very little about cooking, but I care very much about this book after having re-read it several times. Mrs. Whaley exemplified a particular Southern specimen that used to be known as "old ladies", with both of the words intended as compliments--it was an accomplishment in a region subject to disease and storms to grow old, and it was also an accomplishment to be known as a lady, which should never be confused with having money. In this book, Mrs. Whaley was pleased to share the lessons that living into her eighties provided her, with never a word of complaint about wars, hurricanes, widowhood, changing societal mores, or anything else. To the end of her life, she delighted in acquiring the latest tools and gadgets, she entertained prodigiously, she was much amused by the minor scrapes and foibles of her young adult grandchildren, and she maintained one of the most celebrated gardens in a gardening-mad city. Reading this book is like sitting down for a long afternoon before the fireplace with the grandmother we all wish we had, enjoying a long chat over delicacies that she prepared herself in her kitchen. I may never use any of the recipes, but I'm already using some of her lessons about living life joyously and cultivating friendships.

4-0 out of 5 stars A memorable meeting
How I would have loved knowing Mrs. Whaley beyond the pages of her books. She has the most deliciously charming perspective on a world gone by and presents her recollections with a spirit right at home in today. She'sobserves withpithy candor and humor and reading her nuggets of advice isa real treat.Besides, the recipes look marvellous--and very Southern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully enjoyable
This book made me want to revisit Charleston again.I loved the stories (I have not read this author's gardening book) and the recipes sound not only delicious but easy to make as well.

Oh to grow up in a time wherethere are servants everywhere and the family stays close together. It mademe yearn for a time that is no more.

4-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book to dip into, and a great gift!
I enjoyed "visiting with" Mrs. Whaley again, although perhaps not as much as in her gardening book. When reading, you feel as if you are sitting in front of her, engaged in listening to stories about Charleston, her past, and her family, and about making guests feel at home.I don'tthink the recipes will take the world by storm--most are variations on oldfavorites. But you pick up tidbits about entertaining and the relaxedsouthern style. This book and/or her gardening book would make wonderfulgifts, and would be perfect to tuck into a gift basket along with someother items. It is the kind of book you want to pick up when you've had ahard day or have a rainy afternoon to enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Second time around better than the first.
I picked this book up again yesterday having read it several years ago. I just finished a few moments ago and felt compelled to leave this review.

This book is a true delight. To those of us who have the low country in our blood, this book captures it all. I loved it even more the second time around. And even knowing about the tragedies that Mrs. Peterkin has endured I still cried. She is such a fine example of the indomitable southern woman or I guess I should say "Lady". I truly hope that one day I will have the distinct pleasure of meeting her.

My only regret is the book just ends too soon and too fast. I wish there were a sequel, I would love to know what she has been up to. And I would so dearly love a print of the watercolor that is on the front of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
The South Carolina Coast is one of the best places. It's the south at it's best & hasn't surcumb to the Northern nonsense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Fiction; A Fabulous, Page-Turning Read
I was not going to read this book, figuring it was yet another trivial book by a local person with famous connections (Julia Peterkin, a novelist who won a Pulitzer, was the author's mother-in-law). Was I wrong! This is one of the most riveting books I have ever read. Peterkin is a gifted storyteller with amazing stories to tell, stories that are right up there with the best fiction. I want to compare her to Flannery O'Connor, to Nabokov, to Kipling, to Dickens, to any fiction writer whose stories linger with us for the rest of our lives. Yet these powerful stories are true and open a window into recent times. Some of her stories prove that truth is stranger than fiction. They are in turns hilarious, outrageous, tragic, moving and illuminating.

Please, get this book. I don't know Peterkin but I wish I did. I picked up the book by accident and never put it down till I finished. Beg, borrow or steal it, whatever it takes to get it in your hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genevieve Makes Us All More Beautiful
When I read Heaven Is A Beautiful Place, I felt that I was sitting on Genevieve's front porch overlooking Murrells Inlet and listening to her tell the stories.I have heard the Peterkins and Chandlers tell wonderful stories most of my life and this book truly captures their collective spirit.I finished the book at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic, but it seemed to me she was there relating the story of the loss of three of those closest to her.In spite of many adversities she has always worked to make the world a beter place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heaven is a Beautiful Place
I have heard many of these stories through the years but was thrilled when I heard she was going to compile them in chronological order.I loved the way Genevieve told her life stories in a way that not only did I learn about the wonderful people in her life but the history of the area she loves so much. One of the many things I admire about Genevieve is that she lives her life and does not sit on the sidelines and continues to do so today. She has touched many hearts, mine included. ... Read more
