5-0 out of 5 stars Advice, recipes, and a good read
I first "met" Mrs. Whaley when I read her famous book about her garden. It was such a joy to read that I ordered this book.

The book is worth owning just for the recipes. However, her stories behind the recipes and social events make it a book you will want to read over and over.

It is a reminder of a more elegant age.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet little cookbook
I was inspired to purchase this after I went to a luncheon and had the shrimp sandwiches. It is a sweet little book about the old south and Mrs. Whaley's philosophy about life.It ended up being a very nice Mother's day gift for my Mom and Mother in law.

5-0 out of 5 stars for the I hate to cook crowd
What a joy to read Emily Whaley's relaxed approach to entertaining friends with good food and conversation. The humor keeps one turning the pages and the simple recipes appealed to my quick sessions in the kitchen.I bought the $17.95 hardback copy to take with me to Maine for the Summer so that I could easily refer to her superb selection of favorites. Both of Emily's books are great gifts for dear friends who enjoy gardens and good food....who doesn't?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the South
I adore this wonderful warm & funny woman and her wit! Too bad I discovered her before she left us. However, she lives on in her two books which are fantastic gifts for your favorite people. Her daughter also has authored a book on the plantation life of her gggrandmother. Enjoy! ... Read more

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.
