5-0 out of 5 stars A great read
Despite the mistakes he's made, the Herrera family always believed in Joel Hunter and supported him. They showed God's love in how they lived and in everything they did for him -- and he let them down. He's back to make amends, especially to Mari the girl he's always secretly loved. Joel's a changed man now, and he wants to work on the farm and help support the family. But will Mari let him? Her family embraces him with open arms, but Mari can't figure out why he's back and feels in her heart he'll just leave again.

How can he convince her to understand or want him around when he can't share his biggest secret with her? He wants Herrera Farms to be home and he wants to be home for good. But will Mari destroy his dream of staying when she finds out where he's been the last nine years? Will Mari be able to forgive the past in order to see God' plan for her future?

This is a beautiful story of how God works through people to share His mercy, grace, and forgiveness. This story was very entertaining, but filled with examples and lessons of how God's love and Christ's sacrifice on the cross can redeem us and change our lives. Through the lives of the Herrera family, Leigh shows how we never know how things we do or say can affect others.Things aren't always as they appear to be, but God always has a plan for us.This is a wonderful read.I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed, but blessed as you read about Joel Hunter and Mari Herrera, their family, and their journey on the road to forgiveness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, Ready-Made Family Romance
This was a sweet romance and I loved the characters, but I couldn't give it the full five stars, because I didn't feel any chemistry between the hero and heroine or think the romance was developed enough, nor was there even a kiss but one very slight whisper of a kiss, that is not enough to make a believable romance. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
First Communion is generally understood as a rite of passage in which seven- and eight-year-old Catholic children transform from baptized participants in the Church to members of the body of Christ, the universal Catholic Church. This official Church account, however, ignores what the rite actually may mean to its participants. In When I Was a Child, Susan Ridgely Bales demonstrates that the accepted understanding of a religious ritual can shift dramatically when one considers the often neglected perspective of child participants.

Bales followed Faith Formation classes and interviewed communicants, parents, and priests in an African American parish and in a parish containing both white and Latino congregations. By letting the children speak for themselves through their words, drawings, and actions, When I Was a Child stresses the importance of rehearsal, the centrality of sensory experiences, and the impact of expectations in the communicants' interpretations of the Eucharist. In the first sustained ethnographic study of how children interpret and help shape their own faith, Bales finds that children's perspectives give new contours to the traditional understanding of a common religious ritual. Ultimately, she argues that scholars of religion should consider age as distinct a factor as race, class, and gender in their analyses. ... Read more

Product Description

As a girl of eleven, Elizabeth I translated into English a poem by Marguerite of Navarre on incest, spiritual and physical. Four years later her translation, tided "The Glass of the Sinful Soul," was published by the Protestant reformer John Bale. However ingenuous Elizabeth may have been at eleven, she surely realized the implications of the tract when she permitted new editions in 1568, 1582, and 1590. Its bearing on her own family and her precarious hold on the throne was all too obvious when dissenters accused both her father, Henry VIII, and her mother, Ann Boleyn, of adultery; when her father had sought to annul his first marriage on grounds of incest, when her mother was accused by Henry of incest, and when Elizabeth herself was deemed a bastard.

Making Elizabeth's little-known work readily available to today's scholars, Elizabeth's Glass includes a photographic reproduction of Elizabeth's manuscript and a modern transcription, as well as John Bale's additions to his 1548 edition. In an erudite and penetrating introduction, Marc Shell investigates the complex political, familial, theological, and ecclesiastical forces that made Elizabeth acutely conscious of incest and made her translation an emblem of a controversy that stormed throughout Reformation Europe.

Product Description
If over the centuries Christians have become used to sermons being a string of assertions, explanations, or exhortations -- with a sprinkling of stories as illustrations -- the sermons have not been preached in a manner consistent with how the Bible communicates reality. Most of the Bible is stories. Story sermons do today what Jesus did in his stories -- they sneak up on people. Listeners can ward off moral exhortations, and they become resistant to three points, a poem, and a prayer. Intellectually they can parry with information doled out in a series of reasoned arguments. But stories win us over before we understand what is going on. Stories quietly tip the scale of our minds toward agreeing with God's graciousness. (from the Introduction)

In these fine story-sermons believable things happen to believable people, and faith grows -- both theirs and ours.

Product Description
Jesuswas a master storyteller. He could weave timeless, eternal truths into theseemingly simplest of stories. His tales not only disarmed his listeners, butthey also imparted powerful insights into the nature of God in familiar terms.Inthis same spirit, Scenes of Glory is a collection of story sermons that communicatethe truth of God's word through familiar images like a vacation drive, twofriends sitting under an apple tree, or football season. While each of thestories may take the reader into familiar territory, they may also offer a viewof the gospel in a rather unfamiliar and thought-provoking way.Completewith study questions at the end of each chapter, this resource is great forpersonal Bible study and devotion as well as group studies. It is also valuablefor pastors needing either sermon inspiration or simply an alternate view of aparticular biblical text.Ourlife is a series of stories. Scenes of Glory is an enriching additionto anyone's personal story.David O. Bales was a Presbyterian minister for 33 years. Product Description
St Edmund, king and martyr, supposedly killed by Danes (or `Vikings') in 869, was one of the pre-eminent saints of the middle ages; his cult was favoured and patronised by several English kings and spawned a rich array of visual, literary, musical and political artefacts. Celebrated throughout England, especially at the abbey of Bury St Edmunds, it also inspired separate cults in France, Iceland and Italy. The essays in this collection offer a range of readings from a variety of disciplines - literature, history, music, art history - and of sources - chronicles, poems, theological material - providing an overview of the multi-faceted nature of St Edmund's cult, from the ninth century to the early modern period. They demonstrate the openness and dynamism of a medieval saint's cult, showing how the saint's image could be used in many and changing contexts: Edmund's image was bent to various political and propagandistic ends, often articulating conflicting messages and ideals, negotiating identity, politics and belief.
