Product Description
International Business: The Challenge of Global Competition, 9e, by Ball, McCulloch, Geringer, Frantz and Minor continues to be the textbook of choice for instructors who want comprehensive coverage and adopters who like to cover a broad range of topics and to show students the steps a business must take to go global. More than any other text in this market, International Business, 9e has the most complete and current data available in this market. As the ultimate reference book for the international business student, Ball, McCulloch, Geringer, Frantz and Minor incorporate global examples with the Worldview vignettes within the chapter. Moreover, this text does not limit its focus to huge multi-national corporations; smaller firms are highlighted within each chapter in the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises boxed examples. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dry, Too many Examples, Poor Organization
I've been in school now for two years and this is by far and away the worst textbook I've come across. First of all, for every point they make they include WAY too many examples which just draws out the reading. Also, they introduce terms in earlier chapters without explaining them until later chapters. This means that you're left scanning through text endlessly trying to figure out what they are saying. I think the organization of the whole thing is poor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cliche
A bit obsolete and redundant. No great insight can be found in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars International Business, 9th edition
As a first time instructor using this book, I was floored by the amount of useless data in the book that students must dig through to get to the important points of each chapter.Since the power point slides provided with the book only did an outline of the chapters, they were not of much help in giving a lecture. It was also absolutely amazing that a book that bills itself as being published in 2004 (but I received in 2003) is behind the times in a significant number of topics (e.g. it still refers to the G7 - not even mentioning the G8 even though I think it was about 1997 that the G8 became official). The section on religion was a perfect example of how to offend someone in another culture. The author needs to attend a diversity training course!A majority of the questions in the sample tests did not deal with topics that were significant in the chapters, but rather minor insignificant points. It may be the best book out there for an international business class but it shouldn't be priced the way it is for what is clearly an outdated edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars wrong isbn
The isbn number I ordered was 0072866845 the isbn # I recieved is 007121582-4 or 007121427-5 both numbers are on the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding overview of international business
I just finished reading the new 9th edition of this book and it is excellent, containing many improvements on what was already an outstanding book for introducing international business issues to students and businesspeople.

The strengths of this book include its extensive coverage of the various environments of international business, such as the cultural, political, legal, financial, competitive, and physical environments. Each of these chapters has practical examples to supplement the discussion of key issues and concepts, as well as highlighting points of relevance for businesspeople. The discussion of these various dimensions of international business environment is superior to alternative books, such as Hill or Daniels, that I considered using in my teaching (I teach international business for undergraduate students and also offer executive development courses for universities and businesses).

Another strength of this book is its coverage of issues associated with the operations of an international business. The strategy chapter provides a concise and useful overview of concepts in a way that is superior to most strategy books. Other chapters provide detailed and practical discussion of issues such as how to participate in importing and exporting (presented in a manner that sets this book apart from other books that generally provide only a few general pages on the merits and challenges of exporting but provide minimal guidance regarding how to actually do it!). The discussion on international operations is unique compared to other introductory international business books, and provides an insightful review of operations practices in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

There is also a simulation that is provided with this book, allowing users to practice the management of an international business within the global cell phone industry. As part of the 8th edition of Ball et al, I used this simulation with my undergraduate and graduate classes and their response was outstanding. They felt that the experience was one of the best in the entire program, and that they not only learned very much about international business (market analysis, selecting products, pricing, promotion, managing exchange rates, etc.), but that they learned more practical information about functions such as finance, marketing, operations management, and strategy than they had in their earlier coursework.

Teaching or learning the material for an introduction to international business can be a complex and daunting challenge. The Ball et al book helped me and my students to minimize thse challenges, making international business a relevant and enjoyable topic for study, and practice. ... Read more

This new text provides a rigorous analysis of the economics of real estate markets. It goes beyond the often descriptive nature of much property market analysis to focus on important theoretical principles. Throughout, the emphasis is on making an often complex area as accessible and readable as possible, with each chapter containing a boxed summary and questions for self-testing or discussion. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Looks Good ...
Check out the review in Journal of Real Estate Literature - very positive. This is a really comprehensive text, international in scope. For here, could do with more US examples, but as an overview of the economics of real estate this is hard to beat. It is much broader than most of the texts you see, not a how-to-do-it manual, but great for understanding WHY the market works.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Proper Understanding of the Market
At last, a real estate economics text that links together the finance, economics and planning aspects of the production of space. Most texts are so narrow and stuck in their own subject area. The authors cover demand forcommercial space (offices, industrial real estate, shops), investment inreal estate and the links to the wider economy. Unlike many US texts, ithas a global perspective with a fine chapter on international investment.Well written, well researched, comprehensive references - this is aninvaluable resource for professionals and for academics. ... Amazon.com Review
How many Unix gurus does it take to write the definitive UnixWeb server guide? In this case, it took five members of the SunSitedevelopment team to compile a guide on creating and running a Unix Webserver. The Unix Web Server Book assumes some experience withUnix, but even a cursory familiarity should be ample. (The firstchapter is entitled "What Is the Web?") The authors walk you step bystep through the server setup process, the addition of images andother files to your site, and some important security issues. Thesections on multimedia tools and file types are exhaustive andespecially helpful. On the programming side, everything from HTMLbasics to forms and Java is covered. The included CD-ROM contains RedHat Linux; both Apache and Jigsaw server software programs; and dozensof utilities for file conversion, management, and display. ... Read more

Your first job isn't all it's cracked up to be . . . You just spent $100,000 on a college degree to make photocopies. And your manager probably isn-t even happy with them.Life at the entry level isn't about what school you graduated from, or even who you know.It-s actually about paying dues and brownnosing and keeping your foot out of your mouth during meetings. You're Too Smart For This explains everything your college professors didn't:- Understand how college has no application to reality, or anybody living in it.- Come to terms with doing gruntwork and smiling while being yelled at.- Get straight with operating on a team - putting personal interests second, for once.- Negotiate office politics, and recognize when to keep quiet (e.g., "the daytime").- Earn the right promotion or transfer, instead of quitting and being poor again.- Locate a balanced work life, not based on social sacrifice and being hostile. You're Too Smart For This will help you get the hang of the working life soon enough. And even have some fun with it.Especially at happy hour. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's Funny Because It's True
I've bought four additional copies of this book to share the wit and wisdom with my brother and new co-workers fresh out of college.Michael Ball is hilarious and sarcastic, but also sneakily inspiring and reassuring.I thought the transition from college to the corporate world was a surprisingly underrated and overwhelming change. This book made me laugh because it's smart, true, and not afraid to tell the depressing truth. It's an easy read, broken up into 100 different lies about work and peppered with fun comments and quotes in each section.Besides the humor, there's a subtle comforting message that lets you know your initiation into Corporate America is normal.A fun, easy read for anyone - especially college grads, young `corporateers', and anyone with a sense of humor about office life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funnnehh!
Just got this book today and can't put it down.I read for 2.5 hrs. straight and would have kept going but I have a final tomorrow morning.=(

There's a lot of hilarious stuff and definitely great advice. The humor makes me want to read more and more. Can't say it's all-encompassing but definitely worth buying as "one-of-the" books to buy before starting a first job.Great for people right-out-of college. You'll definitely get all the jokes.Great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy read. Enjoyable, informative and straight-to-the-point.
Hi! I'm a 25 year old "career freshman" as Ball likes to put it. I first picked up this book after my first corporate contract job ended to figure out what went wrong and why they had to let me go.

The book's layout reminds me of "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff", with 2-3 pages dedicated to each "lie". Each topic has interesting side notes and captions and is really written to an audience that's straight out of college, comparing subjects like the hiring process and HR recruiters to dating and one-night stands. Ball breaks down each topic in simple english and at times it seems more like an older frat brother is giving you advice rather than a career counselor. I actually enjoyed reading this book and was able to get through the whole thing in about a week.

The only downsides I have about this book are that his punchlines become somewhat predictable as you progress through the book and that the online resources seem more like a place to hype up Michael Ball's achievements than as a place to learn and share about getting through your first job. It would also help if there was an interactive online forum, like other books catered to twentysomethings (e.g. Suze Orman's YF&B).

Still, I highly recommend this book to all of you out there who are still lost and confused in the corporate world. Good luck to you all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blunt & Funny
You're Too Smart for This is a fast, fun, and refreshingly honest take on what it takes to really survive and thrive as a new corporate "grunt."I was actually a little surprised at how far the author takes some of the humor...but I found myself laughing and nodding in agreement the whole time!

After 4 or 5 years of dry, slow college textbooks, this is the crash course you've been waiting for. You'll be able to use your new knowledge tommorow--and have a much stronger understanding of what's going on around you.Because, as Michael Ball points out, you've only got 90 days now to prove you were worth hiring...

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On Time!
It's funny how things come to you just when you need them...After joining a mid-sized Internet company straight out of school, I found myself doing OK with my actual work, but making a lot of interpersonal mistakes I didn't see coming. For instance, after my manager denied a project request--one that I really wanted--I decided to go talk to some other people about getting on the team.In school, this always worked for me.

But in the office, I painfully found out, this is a huge mistake! And just one of many that Michael Ball expertly--and very entertainingly--illustrates and cautions against. What I appreciated most about You're Too Smart for This was that the author is "on the level" with you--he doesn't pull any punches, and talks to you like a big brother might. One you actually like, that is ;)

The structure of the book--the "lies"--make it an easy and fun read the first time around, but also ensure that you can quickly pick it back up later on as a reference guide for whatever situation you're in (e.g., promotions, quitting, etc.).

Do yourself a big favor and check out this book--even if you think you already know the rules.I can practically guarantee you'll learn some valuable new insights.Plus have a great laugh while you're at it! ... Read more

Excerpt: Michael Mackintosh Foot PC (23 July 1913 3 March 2010) was a British Labour politician and writer, who was a Member of Parliament from 1945 to 1955 and from a by-election in 1960 until 1992. His parallel career as a journalist included appointments as editor of Tribune, on several occasions, and the Evening Standard newspaper. Among the books he authored are Guilty Men (an attack on Neville Chamberlain and others for the policy of appeasement), a biography of Jonathan Swift (The Pen and the Sword, 1957) and Aneurin Bevan. Excerpt: Alfred Edward Housman (pronounced ; 26 March 1859 30 April 1936), usually known as A. E. Housman, was an English classical scholar and poet, best known for his cycle of poems A Shropshire Lad. Lyrical and almost epigrammatic in form, the poems were mostly written before 1900. Their wistful evocation of doomed youth in the English countryside, in spare language and distinctive imagery, appealed strongly to late Victorian and Edwardian taste, and to many early twentieth century English composers (beginning with Arthur Somervell) both before and after the First World War. Through its song-setting the poetry became closely associated with that era, and with Shropshire itself. Housman was counted one of the foremost classicists of his age, and has been ranked as one of the greatest scholars of all time. He established his reputation publishing as a private scholar and, on the strength and quality of his work, was appointed Professor of Latin at University College London and later, at Cambridge. His editions of Juvenal, Manilius and Lucan are still considered authoritative. Housman was born in Fockbury, a hamlet on the outskirts of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, the eldest of seven children of a co...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3198 ... Read more

Excerpt: John Barbour (c.1320 13 March 1395), was a Scottish poet and the first major literary voice to write in Scots, the vernacular language of Lowland Scotland. He holds a place in the nation's literary tradition similar to the position that Chaucer, roughly his contemporary, independently occupies vis a vis the vernacular tradition in England. Barbour was the Archdeacon of the Kirk of St Machar in Aberdeen. He also studied in Oxford and Paris. His principal patron was Robert II and evidence of his promotion and movements before Robert Stewart came to power as king tend to suggest that he acted politically in the future king's behalf. Although Barbour was a man of the church, his writing is strongly secular in both tone and themes. The Brus, his major surviving work, was written while he was a member of Robert II's court in the 1370s. The poem's subject is Robert the Bruce and the ultimate success in his prosecution of the First War of Scottish Independence, but it also features actions of Robert II's Stewart forebears in the conflict. Another work, The Stewartis Oryginalle (now lost) purportedly traced the genealogy of the Stewart line. Historically, the Bruce royal line was extinguished with the death of Robert II's uncle, David II. Barbour died in 1395, probably in Aberdeen. Robert II of Scotland, Barbour's royal patron. If the record of Barbour's age in 1375 as sixty is correct, he would have been born c.1320. His birthplace i...http://booksllc.net/?id=151736 ...
