Product Description
A dramatization of the American Helene Hanff's 20-year correspondence with a London antiquarian bookshop. Also on this cassette is a witty duologue between a elderly general and his wife, played by John Mills and Peggy Ashcroft.Amazon.com Review
84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record ofbibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrainedLondon bookseller carried on an increasingly touchingcorrespondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanffencloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarianbooksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' withexpensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, acorrespondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works byHazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separatecover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll everconquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949,Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off toaugment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only whenFPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real funbegin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. hasdared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limpsingles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a realPepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAPTHINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they wantfresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news ofFrank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would havecontinued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that FrankDoel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanffurges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, CharingCross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I Was Diappointed
I had heard so much about this book before reading it. This is one of those classic texts that all bibliophiles seem to read and adore, so I was thoroughly looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I was not as smitten as most readers seem to be. This slim volume chronicles the correspondence between New Yorker Hanff and the staff of an antiquarian bookstore in London. The entirety of the text is letters, as Hanff cultivates a relationship with the shop's staff, a relationship built entirely on transatlantic correspondence. The second part of the book is comprised of Hanff's memoirs of the trip she was finally able to take to London, sadly after the bookstore, Marks and Co. had closed, and after her primary correspondent had died. Certainly the the letters between Hanff and her primary correspondent, Frank Doel, are touching. The two developed quite a friendship. In the privations of the post-war London of the late-1940s and early 1950s, Hanff sent repeated care packages to the bookstore's staff, providing things completely unavailable in the United Kingdom- basics like eggs (real and powdered), oranges, and women's stockings. It return, Doel and his store provided Hanff with quite a reading list- even the most ardent of bibliophiles will likely be wowed by the density and depth of Hanff's reading list. Those elements aside, I preferred Hanff's memoirs of her time in London to the letters. I drank up her descriptions of the places, though I found it difficult to get interested in the people. In sum, while I found this book charming, it was not the amazing experience I was expecting. Bibliophiles will surely want to read it, but I'm not sure a general audience would find it engaging. In writing this, I feel like a bad voracious reader. I've missed something that makes this book a tremendous experience of other book lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top notch message on networking, values and people
This book (which was later made into a good movie with Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft)is set in the post World War II era.For us boomers, we thought that everything came back to normal quickly after the war, but this story shares some of the ongoing hardships encountered by Europeans during the next decade of rebuilding.Shortages of certain every day foods, stockings and what we think of every day items were evident.

The story of an American woman who is always searching for certain old book classics and the staff of a small English independent book shop is detailed, interesting and at times moving. As time moves along, two of the principal characters continue to communicate by letter but they never meet.I don't want to give away the ending, but this is a story on networking and people caring in times past.Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars 84, Charing Cross Road
This book is one of my all time favorite books. The book, 84, Charing Chase Road was loaned to me by a friend. I immediately fell in love with the book. When I had to mail the book back to my friend,I felt I had lost a good friend.I was delighted to find it listed on Amazon.com. and thus I ordered it for my library. The book is composed ofletters written back and forth between Helene Hanff and Frank Doel,a used book dealer. Helen has various needs and inquiries about different books she is interested in (as she is an advid reader). The book is atreasure of how a friendship can grow and become meaningful though twenty years of writing letters back and forth. Even though they never meet and they are separated by miles and live in different countries their friendshipcontinues to grow. What a beautifully written book about the development of this rare treasure called" friendship of the soul". ...
