5-0 out of 5 stars There is only one Bardot!
This is the first volume of Bardot's autobiograghy. She retired from film to become an animal activist at age 40. Her foundation has become very successful in changing laws to help animals throughout France and all the world. The foundation has many animal shelters & habitats. The website is fondationbrigittebardot.fr.
I enjoyed this book and the second volume very much. The second volume is called Le Carre' de Pluton. There is not really an English tranlation to that title. It roughly means an outer space experience. They are both in French! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Un livre superbe....ecrit par le coeur
... 3-0 out of 5 stars Vintage cheesecake
How this dim bulb with the body of Venus ever got a "biography" written about her, we'll never know. Or do we? Bingo! The promoting boyfriend trying to monetize his slampiece.
Bardot's story is about as interesting as marketing a new breakfast cereal. Marketing pretty girls has got to be about the easiest job in the world next to selling candy to fourth graders with a weekly allowance.
Bardot's story? She had full pouty lips, a nice rear-end and a very full d-cup. Trouble was, she was a brunette, and a mousy brown one at that. Three peroxide rinses latter and ....Voila! Problem solved!
The book walks through her "rise" to fame (read...boyfriend's indefatigable marketing) and the vacuum she filled (there just happened to be no other "it" girl at the time). Next thing you know, she's throwing tantrums on the set and pouting and breaking up with manager/boyfriend/pimps with each passing season, with the press gobbling it up. Thatt's "journalism" for you. As each film became more revealing with increasingly permissive (read "daring") allowances by film censors eventually Bardot left little to the imagination.
The vintage and "backstage" and cheesecake black and white photos are hilarious. What was once titillating is now laughable.
Why this is a collectible I'll never know. Probably because it was cheaply printed and the glue dies out and the spine cracks easily. ... Read more

Product Description
THIS INFORMATION IS FOR THE REVISED/EXPANDED 2009/2010 "SECOND EDITION" (RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2009)

VOLUME TWO OF TWO.
All over the world -- everywhere except in the U.S., that is -- the legendary Jean Gabin continues to be considered one of the greatest movie stars of all time.

In the U.S., he's definitely considered to be a cult figure (in 2002, twin Gabin festivals were presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and at the Walter Reade Theatres in New York, in September 2008 a Gabin Weekend was featired at the American Cinematheque in Hollywood), but for the vast moviegoing public, and just like a lot of the greats, he has somehow managed to have fallen off of the radar.

That's about to change, however, because on September 1, 2009, Allenwood Press presents the all-new revised/expanded Second Edition of the very first English-language (and two-volume) book about Jean Gabin, ever. (There's not even an old, out-of-print book about Gabin in English, if you can believe that...)

It's WORLD'S COOLEST MOVIE STAR: THE COMPLETE 95 FILMS (AND LEGEND) OF JEAN GABIN by CHARLES ZIGMAN.

VOLUME TWO, which has been subtitled "Comeback/Patriarch" covers Films 47 through 95, which Gabin made between 1954 and 1976. During this period of his career, instead of playing the tragic drifter as he did when he was younger, the actor now played a series of very cool gentleman-gangsters and world-weary (yet life-loving) patriarchs. During this period, Gabin even turned out a number of hilarious comedies, films which are criminally unknown in the U.S.

The tone of the book is (hopefully) "fun and readable," its goal being to introduce as many people as possible to the films of Jean Gabin; to that end, it's loaded with rare photographs, many of which have never appeared even in previously published French-language books about Gabin.

WORLD'S COOLEST MOVIE STAR is a book for Jean Gabin 'newbies' and 'completists' both: For the uninitiated, there are biography and 'intro' chapters which place Gabin and his famous big-screen persona into perspective. For the completists, author Charles Zigman has unpacked every single one of Jean Gabin's ninety-five theatrical feature films, even the more than sixty pictures which have never been subtitled into English before, so that movie fans can feel, by reading the chapters, that they are actually experiencing the films, firsthand. Excerpts from newspapers written back in the day, both in the U.S. and in Europe, demonstrate how prominent movie critics received Gabin's pictures on the days when they were first released. In short this two-volume book is for everybody.

Besides being the very first book about Jean Gabin in the English language, WORLD'S COOLEST MOVIE STAR, VOLUME ONE AND VOLUME TWO, is also a first because it is the very first filmography book related to the actor in any language; even in France, where there have been some wonderful published biographies of Jean Gabin, there has never been a book concentrating, in great detail, on each of the actor's ninety-five films.

Another great screen legend, the one and only Brigitte Bardot, has contributed an original foreword to Volume Two. VOLUME ONE IS AVAILABLE SEPARATELY. (ISBN #9780979972201.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Film Book
This is really a brilliant book, and I'm glad that I purchased both of the two volumes.I have always enjoyed Jean Gabin's movies, but here in
America, we only know about handful of them, and author Zigman, a true wordsmith, lovingly critiques each of the actor's films in a kind of fun/vibrant/gonzo style that really makes the book "pop."Not only is book great to read, but it's also been beautifully designed (the credited book designer is Michael Kellner, a true artist), and it's an asset to anybody's book collection. Part filmography, part biography, part reference book, I can't recommend this book too highly.

Jean Gabin made movies between 1930 and 1976, and they are all worthwhile, although in America, we only know about a handful of movies which he made in the late 1930s, such as "La Grande illusion," "Pepe Le Moko," "La Bete humaine," and "Le Jour se leve."(During this same period of '37 through '39, Gabin also appeared in a few movies which are just as interesting as the ones I've mentioned, but which were never released in America -- principally 1938's "Le Messager" and 1939's "Le Recif corail."On the recommendation of Mr. Zigman, through his book, I sought out these additional two films, which are available on DVD in France, without Engish subtitles, and found them to be amazing.)

In short, I'm bowled over by both volumes of "World's Coolest Movie Star: The Complete 95 Films (and Legend) of Jean Gabin," and I think that you will be, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool book on a movie star too often ignored in the US
I learned a lot from reading this comprehensive and entertaining book.Like many film buffs, I had seen Gabin in La Grande Illusion and also in Carne's masterpiece, Le Jour Se Leve. But I did not know he had been in nearly 100 films; nor did I know how he worked practically up to his death in wide-ranging roles that would have stretched and broken many actors.Zigman does a thorough job in tracking down many Gabin rareties and the love for his subject is evident.I plan to revisit many Gabin films using this book as a guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
This book was terrific! A must have for any true cinemaphile (cinephile???). To my knowledge, it's the only English language book written about Jean Gabin which is shocking. That being said, if one book is all we get you couldn't ask for better. The book has a light, humorous touch that makes for fun and easy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coolest Books
I've been a longtime fan of the French actor Jean Gabin, and am thrilled to find this English-language book about him.I just completed this two-volume set about Gabin's life and films and was completely engaged and entertained. The second volume, which details Gabin's life and films when he was older, is just as great as the first volume. The two books together are an in-depth look at his life and work.I have friends who love old movies, and I'm definitely buying them both volumes for the holidays.I agree with a previous reviewer - with a great title and fascinating subject, WORLD'S COOLEST MOVIE STAR makes a great coffee table book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I have both of these cool books, and I love them
These two books are great to have on your coffee table or anywhere else you may want to have something fun and interesting to read for a few minutes a day. I enjoy reading an article about one of Jean Gabin's almost 100 movies, and doing so learning fun facts about haw and when each film was made. The story line, seeing beautiful pictures, reading excerpts and much more, it's really fun. I highly recommend both books. The first one is about his early career when he often played a tragic drifter, the second about the later part of it when he took on a more patriarchal figure. ... Read more
