Excerpt: The Madcap Laughs -The title of the album comes from a line in the song Octopus. After leaving the group, Barrett began recording sessions with former Pink Floyd-turned-Syd Barrett manager Peter Jenner in May 1968. Although the sessions were brief, the project was abandoned for almost a year while Barrett spent much of the year as a recluse. In April 1969, Malcolm Jones took over the project and Barrett began working on newer material, while reworking the 1968 recordings. Session musicians, namely, members of The Soft Machine, as well as Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley were also called in to augment Barrett's songs. It is still a mystery why Jones abandoned production responsibilities, at the end of May, so soon after having assumed them. Jones' recollections of the sessions are that he and Barrett got on well together and had in fact completed half of the album before the new producers took over. Roger Waters and David Gilmour were in the process of completing Pink Floyd's ambitious Ummagumma album when they got involved with The Madcap Laughs that July and helped Barrett finish his album, "in a two-day sprint" according to Rick Sanders, author of Pink Floyd (Futura Publications, 1976). The album featured a rather unorthodox recording process, in which Syd would provide a backing track of his own singing accompanied by acoustic guitar, over which the session musicians would overdub the rest of the arrangement. However, Syd's playing and singing were highly erratic and unpredictablehe skipped or added beats and bars seemingly...http://booksllc.net/?id=1205045 ... Read more

Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Syd Barrett (6 January 1946 - 7 July 2006), born Roger Keith Barrett, was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and artist. He is most remembered as a founding member of psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd, providing major musical and stylistic direction in their early work, although he left the group in 1968 amidst speculations of mental illness exacerbated by heavy drug use.Barrett was active as a rock musician for about seven years, recording two albums with Pink Floyd and two solo albums before going into self-imposed seclusion lasting more than thirty years. His post rock-band life was as an artist and a keen gardener, ending with his death in 2006. A number of biographies have been written about him since the 1980s and Pink Floyd wrote and recorded a classic song about him after he left, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" on the 1975 album Wish You Were Here. ... Excerpt: "See Emily Play" was the second single recorded by British psychedelic rock group Pink Floyd. It was written by original frontman Syd Barrett and recorded on 23 May 1967. The single featured "Scarecrow" as its B-side. It later appeared on the compilations Relics (1971), Works (1983), Shine On (1992), Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (2001) and The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 40th Anniversary Edition (2007). The song is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. The song was reportedly about a girl named Emily, whom Barrett claimed he saw while sleeping in the woods after taking a hallucinogenic drug. Barrett later stated that the story about sleeping in the woods and seeing a girl before him was made up "...all for publicity." According to A Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey, by Nicholas Schaffner, Emily is the Honourable Emily Young (b. 13 March 1951), daughter of Wayland Hilton Young, 2nd Baron Kennet, and nicknamed "the psychedelic schoolgirl" at the UFO Club. An article in Mojo magazine called "See the Real Emily" supposedly shows a picture of Barrett's Emily. Barrett, reportedly, was not happy with the final studio cut. He protested against its release, which producer Norman Smith speculated was based on Barrett's fear of commercialism. It was during sessions for the song that David Gilmour became a frequent visitor to the studi...http://booksllc.net/?id=1915200 ... Read more

1...http://booksllc.net/?l=de&id=74126 ... Read more

Tow, Marty Balin, Daniel O'sullivan, Cary Grace, Ruthann Friedman, Joe Siano. Excerpt:Cary Grace is an American recording artist, singer , songwriter , musician , and record producer . She plays guitar and analogue synthesizers. Her music is strongly influenced by classic British psychedelic and progressive rock as well as space rock , but spans a wide range of genres, from folk rock to slow cosmic blues, to heavier guitar rock. It can at times be reminiscent of early 1970's Pink Floyd . Some of her music has been compared sonically to Hawkwind and other space rock groups, because of the use of electronic instruments. Her writing places much emphasis on meaningful, intellectual lyrics, in addition to creating interesting atmosphere and sonic textures, and showcasing musicianship through extended improvised jams. She produces her own music, working with various band line-ups and collaborators, and focuses on presenting each of her albums as a complete art form. She is known for her use of unusual production elements, homemade instruments, vintage synthesizers , including the EMS VCS 3 , and analogue tape effects. In 2004, Cary released her first album, consisting mainly of singer-songwriter, acoustic, folk-rock, and Americana material. It was recorded in Nashville with local musicians, and Vince Gill made a guest appearance, playing mandolin on two tracks. She moved to the United Kingdom in 2005, to pursue a different musical direction. Since the move she has released three full-length albums and an EP. For her most recent album, Perpetual Motion , Graham Clark (violinist) , appeared as a special guest for some extended improvisa... ... Read more
