4-0 out of 5 stars Soothing rhyme and muted nighttime illustrations make a perfect, calming, bedtime book.
"Hillside Lullaby" is filled with love and nature. It is about a little girl who is not quite ready to go to sleep. She listens for nature's lullabies. Meanwhile, out in nature a variety of animals bond with their Moms and then settle down for the night. Soothing rhyme and muted nighttime illustrations make a perfect, calming, bedtime book. Margie Moore's illustrations lull visually while the comforting text creates a sense of relaxation.

"There's a breeze on the hill blowing sleepy and fresh, like the breath of the harvest moon. And tucked in the cattails, a bold little toad echoes his mother's tune. Peep, peep. Dream deep!" . . . There's a cricket in tall grass. He's tuning his wings and learning the hillside song. His mom plays beside him, a chorus of strings. The whole hillside sings along."

In the end, the peaceful hillside songs accompany the little girl into dreamland.

Product Description
Architects are rarely invited into the theological debate the way scientists often and artists sometimes are, this despite the obvious analogies between design and Design. Even when they are designing places of worship, the shape of their own faith is given no special place, nor the theological implications of what they are doing regardless of faith. (Indeed, mention "architecture" and "religion" or "God" in the same sentence, and the mind automatically flips to churchs and synagogues, and then to fifty cliche forms.) The idea behind this volume was to blaze a new trail in thinking rationally about religion, theology, and everyday life. It opens, new avenues of debate and discussion about the meaning of religious faith in the 21st century. For not only architects, of course, but also film-makers, writers, composers, painters, scientists, institution-builders, and inventors create-design-with similar if not the same ethical constraints and incentives. The desire of everyman to be creatively involved in life is, we submit, an essentially religious desire. Understanding why and how this is so through architecture might make this clearer to all, and more realizable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Divinity Creativity Complexity
The book edited by Michael Benedikt ( God Is The Good We Do, etc.) is probably unique in the history of the literature of art, architecture, creativity and religion. Topics seldom if ever brought together
in either secular or religious education, are addressed by fourteen eminent thinkers in diverse fields of endeavor. Not since the founding, in the nineteen fifties, of the Society for Arts, Religion and Contemporary Culture by Alfred Barr, Curator of MOMA and Murray Halverson, Harvard theologian, together with Paul Tillich, W.H. Auden, Thornton Wilder,et al., has such a bold attempt been made to confront the same eternal triad of issues. Benedikt, holder of the Hal Box Distinguished Chair at the University of Texas at Austin, is an architect, a philosopher, a writer and a theologian (or a-theologian,perhaps) of brilliant insight and humble posture. He brings together in a single dense volume, John F. Haught ( God After Darwin) and Charles Jencks (Ecstatic Architecture, The Architecture of The Jumping Universe), Michael Ruse, (Editor of the Jounal:Philosophy and Biology) and Sheryl Tucker de Vasquez who writes about Perspectives on Architecture and Race, Thomas Fisher, former editor of Progressive Architecture, now Dean of the College of Design at Minnesota and Gordon Kauffman (In the Face of Mystery: A Constructive Theology) Mallinkrodt Professor of Divinity Emeritus at Harvard. All the others are just as interesting.

The topics range from experiential aspects of sacred space to ethical approaches to desert ecology, from a magical pool beloved of Luis Barragan to the empty cross in Ando's Chapel of The Light, from the design of a "DNA Garden" to "Feminist Architecture" and so on into a wondrous world of uncommon thought about the most common of experiences.

Now if this sounds like an aimless pot-pourri it is decidedly not so. These writers were invited first to a major symposium on the overall topic in 2003 and then were invited to contribute on topics that linked their outlooks under a shared umbrella. Benedikt is meticulous in his preparation, his organisation and his editing. The book, number 15 in a series of CENTER publications by the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture was seven years in preparation. It is a masterly contribution to discussion across boundaries. And besides, it is fun to read if you are looking for more than Pop-theology or Pop art, and especially if you want to think your way beyond conventional modes. ... Read more
