5-0 out of 5 stars One Long, Exciting Summer
At first, Jack and his brother, Benny, aren't very excited about spending the summer in Chowder Bay, Maine. But their attitude changes when they arrive there. First, they meet fisherman Angus O'Neil, who tells them about Old Salty, the biggest lobster in the whole ocean. But it soon becomes apparent that Old Salty is not going to settle for just ruling the ocean. She has plans for taking over the world and she's starting with Chowder Bay. Then, on a hike, Jack and Benny must face down a gigantic eagle with a voracious appetite for hats. Surviving that, they discover the ghost of Dr. True, who is eager to set the record straight about the town's famous hero of the Civil War--a man he claims murdered him!

Anyone who has ever gone on a boring family trip will understand Jack and Benny's reluctance at the beginning of the Salt Water Taffy series. What makes this story magical is not that the boys learn some great lesson about entertaining themselves in the unplugged world, but that they have fun while still remaining believable eleven- and eight-year-old boys. They are open to new experiences, even if those experiences aren't quite what they expect: a talking wolf, a ghost, a giant sea monster. Loux's droll wit makes his story a fun read for more than just kids, though. Adult readers will appreciate little touches such as Jack and Benny's dad avoiding work by playing with a Game Boy discarded in favor of a treasure hunt.

Loux's art is another plus of the series. Using thick black lines and sharply pointed curves, he creates a scene that, like his plot, mimics reality, but makes it so much more appealing. His palette is a deceptively simple black-and-white, but the series loses nothing by not being in color. Each panel has tiny small details to bring alive the beach scenes, animal fur, building interiors, and so forth. At important dialogue scenes, Loux will often take a moment to just highlight the characters, leaving off background entirely and forcing the eye to focus. This is indicative of his strength with pacing, important in a humorous action series such as this.

The Salt Water Taffy series is as much of a treasure as anything Jack and Benny dig up on their excursions. Readers, especially those who are late elementary school through middle school age, looking for fun adventures set in a world just this side of realistic will laugh along with Jack, Benny, Angus, and the rest of the Cowder Bay inhabitants as they enjoy one long, exciting summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars 18 Installments Of "The Jack Benny Program" On 6 Cassette Tapes!
"Radio Spirits, Inc." has released several different volumes (on both Cassette and Compact Disc audio formats) that are chock-full of Jack Benny's unique style and humor.

This is Volume #2 in a Radio Spirits' series of Audio Cassette compilations of "The Jack Benny Program", which was one of radio's longest-running weekly series, running from 1932 through 1955.

This 6-Tape set features 18 full-length Benny radio shows, complete with original commercial advertisements (many of them integrated right into the shows themselves). Audio quality is very good for all programs.

There are three Jack Benny programs per 90-minute cassette. All of the shows found in this collection originally aired between 1944 and 1949. Jack's guest stars here include: Jimmy Stewart, Red Skelton, Eddie Cantor, Bing Crosby, Jane Wyman, Van Johnson, Ronald Colman, Edward G. Robinson, among others.

This whole series of Audio Tape packages put out by Radio Spirits is very nicely designed, IMO. The easy-to-carry, plastic-coated packaging that houses the six audio cassettes is very attractive, with inventive high-quality artwork. Plus, the easily-stored, "book-like" package is quite compact as well, measuring 5" x 9" (and just 1" thick).

"The Jack Benny Program" has stood the test of time (a lot of time, in fact). These shows are just as funny and fun to listen to today as they were when they originally crackled over the radio airwaves way back when. And you get nine full hours of Mr. Benny's antics right here in this excellent 18-episode collection from Radio Spirits. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For it's one... two... three CDs out at the old ballgame!
According to manufacturer Radio Spirits, Yogi himself selected the vintage shows that comprise this 3-hour, 3-CD collection.

Dubs are from original broadcast transcription discs. A certain amount of surface noise and crackle is inevitable from these 60 to 70-year old records, but it's not so obtrusive as to render listening unpleasant. Recommended for all old time radio and baseball fans.

Product Description
As a comic instrumentalist, sawing away week after week at his violin, Jack Benny stood as radio's reigning off-key virtuoso, producing more laughs per measure than any other comic before or since.

This seven hour set of 14 digitally remastered radio episodes finds Benny and his badly squeaking bow mangling the classics and infuriating the long-suffering Professor Andre LeBlanc (Mel Blanc). He also discovers his talent as a songwriter - a skill every bit as highly developed as his ability with the violin.

Mary Livingstone, Eddie Rochester Anderson, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, and Don Wilson are on hand - along with guest stars Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael, George Burns, Danny Kaye, Groucho Marx and Frank Sinatra - and, they're all ears!

Includes a Program Guide by radio historian Elizabeth McLeod featuring photographs and background information about the show.

Episodes Include: Phil Tries To Collect a World Series Bet 10-13-40, Jack Jams With Louis Armstrong 05-09-43, Rochester Lost at Sea - Briefly 02-17-46, Movie of Jack's Life - Thanksgiving Show 11-23-47, One Down, Three to Go 12-07-47, Professor LeBlanc Gives Jack a Violin Lesson 12-05-48, Mary is Sick 05-15-49, Jack Watches TV 02-18-51, Jack Takes His Song to the Publisher 10-14-51, Guadalajara Trio Sings Jack's Song 12-09-51, To New York to Publish Jack's Song 02-10-52, Song Rejected / Carnegie Hall Dream 02-17-52, Surprise Guests Sing Jack's Song 03-02-52, The IRS Interviews Professor LeBlanc About Jack's violin 03-16-52 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really Two Autobiographies in One
I've been a Jack Benny fan ever since I was a child; I loved his humour, his style, his shows and just about everything else about him. Consequently, when I stumbled upon this book, I had to read it. Jack Benny's daughter Joan is the one who put it together. About ten years after Jack's death, and shortly after her mother passed away, she found an almost-four-hundred-page manuscript that Jack had written as his autobiography. Now, of the 300 or so pages in this book, just under half of them were taken from Jack's manuscript (presented in bold lettering); the fraction of the hundreds of pages of Jack's manuscript that are included here is unclear. The remainder of the book, just over half, was written (in plain lettering, interspersed throughout) by Joan. Some her prose contains quotes from several of Jack's friends and relatives, and some paragraphs are meant as clarification for part of what Jack wrote; however, most of it is about Joan's own life - her partial autobiography - prior to her father's death. Thus, a reader expecting this 300-page book to be entirely about Jack Benny's life may feel a bit disappointed. But on the plus side, through some of her text we can see aspects of Jack that we could not really appreciate just through reading his own words. The writing styles (since there are two separate writers) are clear, friendly, accessible and engaging. Rather than following a formal chronological development of Jack's life, most of Jack's part of the book is in the form of various anecdotes, memories, comedy skits, etc., told in more-or-less chronological order. Some of his stories brought tears of laughter to my eyes. This book can be enjoyed not only by avid Jack Benny fans like me, nor just by those wondering what Jack Benny was really like, but also by anyone interested in the evolution of show business from vaudeville to television. ... Perfect new copy of an out-of-print book at a fantastic price.Sent promptly and packaged well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Family Reading
My family checks this book out from the library regularly. My children are 5 and 3 and they can't get enough of Jack Tractor, Benny the Breakdown truck and all the other wonderful characters. My husband and I enjoy the book as much as the children do. We all have our favorite story but we read them all several times a day. I would recommend this book to any parent with children who love cars and trucks or who just love a great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great favorite
We have taken this book out from the library 17 times for our 4 year old he loves it. I am sadly disapointed to see it is no longer in print. A great book that can be read and reread by children and adults alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars teriffic book for kids who love vehicles
Both my kids love this book--a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy.The personalities of the vehicles are nicely done, and the tone isn't typical American pap.The only drawback is that all the main characters are male...The illustrations are modern and really well done without being too abstract.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 year old son loves this book
This book contains 5 stories about cars and trucks that pass through Small Bill's garage. The pictures are big and fun for children to look at, the stories contain puns and witty names that make it fun for adults to read, and reinforce the importance of friendship and good behaiour for children listening. The stories are short, simple and pure fun. ... Read more

Product Description
Jack Benny (February 14, 1894 ? December 26, 1974), born Benjamin Kubelsky, was an American comedian, vaudevillian, and actor for radio, television, and film. Widely recognized as one of the leading American entertainers of the 20th century, Benny played the role of someone comically "tight" with his money, insisting on remaining 39 years old despite his actual age, and often playing the violin badly. Benny was known for his comic timing and his ability to get laughs with either a pregnant pause or a single expression, such as his signature exasperated "Well!" His radio and television programs, tremendously popular in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s were a foundational influence on the situation comedy. ... Read more
