Product Description
Revealing and richly informative account of the dramatic life of one of the century's most famous screen actresses, Ingrid Bergman (1915--82), a controversial woman whose affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini led to her being banned from the USA for seven years.Ingrid Bergman was the daughter of a Swedish father and German mother, who spent part of the 1930s in the German film industry. Her success in the Swedish film 'Intermezzo' (1936), where she played a concert pianist, led to her arrival in Hollywood in 1939, where she starred in 'Casablanca', three of Hitchcock's films ('Notorious', 'Spellbound' and 'Under Capricorn'), 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' (with Spencer Tracy), 'Gaslight', 'The Bells of St Mary's', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', etc.Her roles, like her life, alternated between the saintly and the saucy, the innocent and the dissolute. At first America fell in love with her: she was uncommonly fresh, recognisably human, and (it seemed) a happily domesticated wife and mother. However, as Spoto shows, nothing was ever tame about Ingrid; her love affairs were intense, and her relationship with Rossellini scandalised America.Ingrid Bergman's work and life comprise a romantic drama that rivals the biographies of Isadora Duncan, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Jacqueline Kennedy. In forty-nine feature films, nine plays and countless public appearances, she enchanted millions over a period of five decades. ... Read more

Excerpt: Ingrid Bergman (29 August 1915 29 August 1982) was a Swedish actress noted for her starring roles in American films. She won three Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and the Tony Award for Best Actress. She is ranked as the fourth greatest female star of American cinema of all time by the American Film Institute. She is best remembered for her role as Ilsa Lund in Casablanca (1942), a World War II drama co-starring Humphrey Bogart. Before becoming a star in American films, she had already been a leading actress in Swedish, French, German, Italian, and British films. Her first introduction to American audiences came with her starring role in the English remake of Intermezzo in 1939. In America, she brought to the screen a "Nordic freshness and vitality," along with extreme beauty and intelligence, and according to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, she quickly became "the ideal of American womanhood" and one of Hollywood's greatest leading actresses. Her producer David O. Selznick, who called her "the most completely conscientious actress" he had ever worked with, gave her a seven-year acting contract, thereby assuring her continual stardom. A few of her other starring roles, besides Casablanca, included For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Gaslight (1944), The Bells of St. Mary's (1945), Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946), and Under Capricorn (1949), and the independent production, Joan of Arc (1948). In 1950, after a decade of stardom in American films, she starred in the Italian film Stromboli, which led to a love affair with director Roberto Rossellini while they were both already married. The affair created a scandal that forced her to return to Europe until ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=41562 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ingrid Bergman, World's Greatest Icon!
I don't think I can say enough about Ingrid Bergman without sounding like an idiot, but Ingrid, to me, was one
great woman. I would classify her as the World's Greatest Icon. The photo of Ingrid on the Hollywood Icon Journals is equisitely beautiful. Now that I bought this Hollywood Icon Journal with Ingrid on the cover, I hate to use it. It's something you just don't want to mess up.It is a very well-bound book with fine, strong pages for recording data. I love this book.In fact, to preserve the beautiful photo cover of Ingrid on this book, I bought a plastic book cover for it.Anyone that loves Ingrid Bergman will love this wonderful book. It is something you will treasure for the rest of your life.

Excerpt: Angelina Jolie (born Angelina Jolie Voight; June 4, 1975) is an American actress. She has received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. Jolie promotes humanitarian causes, and is noted for her work with refugees as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has been cited as one of the world's most attractive people, as well as the world's "most beautiful" woman, titles for which she has received substantial media attention. Though she made her screen debut as a child alongside her father Jon Voight in the 1982 film Lookin' to Get Out, Jolie's acting career began in earnest a decade later with the low-budget production Cyborg 2 (1993). Her first leading role in a major film was in Hackers (1995). She starred in the critically acclaimed biographical films George Wallace (1997) and Gia (1998), and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the drama Girl, Interrupted (1999). Jolie achieved wider fame after her portrayal of video game heroine Lara Croft in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), and since then has established herself as one of the best-known and highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. She has had her biggest commercial successes with the action-comedy Mr. ... Read more
