Editorial Review Amazon.com A Note to Amazon Readers (and a Q&A) from Valerie Bertinelli Dear Amazon Customer, Glad to see you here and hopefully purchasing my book. I've heard if you buy multiple copies it's a better experience--a better one for me!But seriously, I'm usually on Amazon, too. I've been buying books through the site for ten years. I enjoy reading the reviews. I get a good sense of the book, and I like to hear what other people have to say. Like in a traditional bookstore, I can look at the cover, peek inside the book, and check out the bestseller lists. Valerie - Do you have a favorite character from a book? I love Scout and Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird.
- If you can be any character from a book, who would you like to be? I would like to be Scarlett and I would let Rhett know how much I love him.
- How do you decide what next book you want to read? If it's for my book group, whoever hosts the next gathering picks the book, so it's picked for me seven out of eight times. But on my own, I read reviews and ask people whose taste I like what they're reading.
- Where's your favorite place to read? Either lying in bed or on the sofa next to the fireplace.
- What is your favorite genre? I don't really have one.
Book Description We all knew and loved Valerie Bertinelli as the girl next door cutie, Barbara Cooper, in the hit TV show "One Day at a Time." Now she is the divorced mother of a teenager and is conducting a very public -- and already successful -- campaign to lose weight as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig. Losing It is Bertinelli's frank motivational story -- from her complicated family life to her struggles to maintain a healthy self-image while coping with celebrity, her tumultuous 20-year marriage to rock star Eddie Van Halen, and her difficulties with depression. She takes us behind the scenes in her acting career and marriage, recalling the stress and concerns of being a rock star's wife, the joys of motherhood, her lifelong battle with weight, and her determination to let herself feel loved again. With courage and candor, humor and emotion, Bertinelli shares her fears and insecurities in ways that will appeal to the hundreds of thousands of women who face these same issues every day. ... Dissed President Bush in first chapter won't finish reading it
I've always liked Valerie Bertinelli, i'm a huge fan of Vanhalen and I was excited to read this book, BUT I didn't get past the first chapter and I had to put it down. Why did Valerie feel she had to diss our President and in the first chapter?? Don't these Stars realize they are going to alienate at least 1/2 of the American population by saying such things?? Why make any kind of political stand? I totally lost interest and paid money for something I won't finish reading.
So while you're here enjoy the view. Keep on doing what you do!
As a huge "One Day at a Time" fan I grew up with Valerie Bertinelli. She was always such a sweet lady who had a lot of talent. In her book, she discusses her fame and her marriage as well as her weight issues. This book doesn't include racy gossip or tasty tidbits. Because Valerie is a real talent who doesn't need to rely on second rate tricks to get people to read her story. Nevertheless, "Losing It" is a captivating autobiography because Valerie took the time to describe the woman behind the cameras who most of the public really didn't know until now. This book is funny, interesting and always sincere! Another book that I'm sure will be just as great as this is Maureen McCormick's autobiography, Here's the Story, which will be out later this year!
All I can say is wow! what a great book and life story.
Valerie is only 5 years older than me, so I grew up watching her.
of course One Day At A time and then followed her EVERY TV movie and amazed how a good a actress she became!
and naturally always thinking she is a beautiful woman, that face!
I watched with sadness as she more or less faded from the Spotlight.
I missed seeing Val on TV!
I was happy she became a mom and understood her decision to step back a bit. but I really missed her! I had no idea what turmoil she went through.
so when she did the people magazine"im fat" issue, going on Jenny Craig
I watched, I read her blog all the time checking on her progress and hoped the best for her. though even heavy, Valerie was beautiful, when I heard she was penning a tell-all book, I couldn't wait!
and I am not disappointed, let me say this is one of the most well-written autobiographies I have ever read, I was hooked from page one! she is candid, honest and articulate, so much so, I could not put it down. this woman really worked hard (still is) on not only her outer self, but her inner being as well. she didn't blame anyone on her mistakes or choices, but herself (and a bit hard on herself) she realized
Im sure, very early on the marriage was not gonna work, but tried hard to make it. I had no idea she had such low self-esteem, I can't see why!?
I love her down to earth personality, its part of her appeal.
no star like diva attitude there! anyone can relate to her.
amazing book from a truly talented (Hollywood, take note!) beautiful
woman who deserves The Happiness she seems to have found.
p.s. id LOVE to live near enough to have her sign the book!
My Teenage Crush
I had the biggest crush on Valerie in Jr High. (1979 - 1980). Her so called big Italian child bearing hips were fine with me ! I applaud her candor in writing this book and her success in weight loss. I always thought her and Van Halen an odd pair but this book shows perhaps they were not all too different people. I think though even though there was infidelity on both sides, the rock music star's life wore on her so I think at times she is too hard on herself on this book. I am glad she has slimmed down. I think yes, there is often too much put on a person's looks but this has led to many choosing obesity as a lifesyle choice which is equally unhealthy. KUDOS VAL !

I recommend For Today and For The Original Overeaters Anonymous Very Low Carbohydrate Food Plan: Greysheet Recipes. They are beautiful books. I bought "For the Original OA..." because I'm on the very low carb food plan. It has great recipes. I really like the protein and vegetable recipes. I can never think of enough things to do with vegetables. Now I know what other people are cooking. I'm glad to learn more about phone and in person meetings. I never knew where the term "greysheet" came from. I have wanted to learn more about it for a long time.
