Product Description

The chapters in this volume are testament to the many ways in which Robert Bjork’s ideas have shaped the course of research on human memory over four decades. It showcases the theoretical advances and recent findings by researchers whose work and careers have been influenced by Bjork.

The first group of chapters explore the idea that forgetting is an adaptive response to the demands of a retrieval system fraught with competition -- an idea that has helped recalibrate conceptualizations of memory away from one in which in which the computer is the dominant metaphor.

Several chapters then review the application of research on learning and memory to enhancing human performance, reflecting Bjork’s staunch commitment to translating his findings and theories to real-world settings.

Later chapters address topics that are relevant to the translation of cognitive psychology to human performance, and in particular recognize the critical role of metacognition in such problems.

The final chapters cover a variety of issues related to how remembering can be enhanced, and how research on remembering can be profitably guided by the use of mathematical modeling.

This volume will appeal to researchers and graduate students of human learning, memory, and forgetting, and will also benefit an audience working in applied domains, such as training and education.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Book
Unfamiliar Paths is a challenging book, calling Christians to re-evaluate the way we view missions and the models we work with. Bjork is an American missonary in France with close to twenty years experience, and the bookdraws heavily from his experience and what he has been taught over thistime, in what has been rated as one of the hardest countries in the worldto evangelise. This experience and the time Bjork has spent puttingvarious ideas into practise give this book an edge over many moretheoretical books on missions, which I appreciated. As to his ideas, Iagree with him that many of the program orientated methods which haveworked so well in America and some other places need to be re-evaluated andthought through again. They may not be as Biblical as we would like tothink. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Bjork," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Bjork in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Bjork when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Bjork, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
William James made a significant contribution to American intellectual life and the discipline of psychology. This biography ties his thought and life together in a personal and detailed way. The text uses material including James' diaries, class notes, family correspondence, and love letters to his wife, Alice and goes beyond a chronology of key events in James' life to focus on a detailed account of his intellectual and creative development. Instead of concentrating on the importance of James' "spiritual crisis" in the late 1800s, it reveals the emotional dependence that he had on his wife Alice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars cut and paste Bjork
Bjork's BAD habit of hacking up her box sets...choosing bad pictures and being off the wall knows no bounds.
I guess we put up with her because no one else could get away with it, or she is the only one willing to do it this way?

Never had a bad Bjork book yet. This one helps you see if your a "stalker" in a check list for you to see
if you meet the criteria to be a "bjork stalker"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Bjork Fans
This book has gorgeous close-up photos of Bjork. It is organized very neatly and attractively. However, the information is a bit scarce. Die-hard Bjork fans will not learn many new things from this book, but the photosare worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book has the best pictures ever
the pictures are so beautiful!!! ok, that describes all.if u are a björk fan, who cares bout the contents.the internet has better stuff.i bought this book just for the pics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment quickly set in!
I really think this book left something to be desired. The pictures were good, but are the only part that are credited to the source. The text seems to be hear say and reads like a magazine article; I don't think theauthor has ever even had a conversation with Bjork.I could not find onecredit or source listed in the book, other than the pictures. The picturesare not captioned as to where or when they were taken.I was just reallydisappointed. I wouldn't waste my money..Again. Maybe I am wrong, check itout for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the most beaufiful look into Bjork's life.
If you are obsessed with Bjork like me, you'll love this book.It has pictures of Bjorks' early years with the Sugarcubes, pictures of her solo, and even baby pictures!! This book rocks and encludes some of the coolestpics of Bjork that you'll want to rip out and hang on your wall!

5-0 out of 5 stars I miss you, but I haven't met you yet...
For any hardboiled Björk-fans like me, this is definitely a must have! It covers her entire life, from the very beginning (singing Sound of Music at the age of 2) up until right after release of her second album Post. Info on all bands, has a selective discography, tons of beautiful pictures, and is actually quite informative. For people not familiar with a lot of Björk history, this is a good starting point, but it should also be able to feed any die-hard fan with atleast some new details.

I would have bought this one even if it was twice as expensive! ... Read more

Product Description
Saga in Steel and Concrete NORWEGIAN ENGINEERS IN AMERICA BY Kenneth Bjork PEOFESSOR OF HISTORY AT ST. OLAF COLLEGE NORWEGIAN-AMERICAN HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA 1947 PREFACE THE officers of the Norwegian-American Historical Associa tion, no less than the editors of the Norwegian-language news papers in the United States, have long known that the engineers and architects born in Norway and educated in the schools of Europe were playing a significant and at times a spectacular role in the development of America. In their discussions of editorial policy, they have always assumed that a compre hensive publication program called for a volume devoted exclusively to the activities of the Norwegian-born technicians who migrated to these shores. In 1939 they were convinced that the time had arrived to begin such a project, and I was asked then to prepare the present book. A preliminary survey of the sources indicated that this was a field previously un worked by the historian, and that the association had undertaken a task that was something more than a rounding out of its admirable program of publications. It became obvious that a study of the Norwegian engineers and architects would be primarily a first case study in a larger area of research that of the immigrant as a vital leader in American technology. The information unearthed in the months that followed lent fresh and concrete meaning to an oft-quoted phrase, transit of civilization, and gave rise to the wish that one day a broader synthesis, embracing the work of all the immigrant technical groups, might be made. It is my hope that Saga in Steel and Concrete will be received in the spirit of this wish and be regarded as a contribution to an enlarged interpretation of our European heritage, Any such study necessarily encounters difficulties, some of them well-nigh insuperable, and unwittingly works injustice to individuals. The difficulties were less numerous and the in justice, I trust, less blatant because of the assistance given me KANSAS. CSWfiO. PUBLIC LIBRAW A i j SAGA IN STEEL AND CONCRETE by the men and organizations discussed in this book. The archives of the Norwegian-American Technical Society, the product of years of active research, are kept at the headquar ters of its Chicago branch these were put at my disposal, as were the materials contained in the Norwegian-American Tech nical Journal. The society has also been most helpful in other ways i n formally endorsing the project, in providing lists of members, in suggesting points of approach, and in establishing the many contacts that were invaluable for obtaining informa tion and appraising technical undertakings. It is impossible here publicly to acknowledge and to thank all of the engineers of Norwegian origin who in one way or another have made my work easier, more pleasant, and more effective. I should be guilty of gros ingratitude, however, if I did not mention the assistance of several. Waldemar Nielsen, president of the Chicago Norwegian Technical Society, has been kindest counselor of all and a sure guide in my relations with the organized engineers. Axel Waerenskjold of Oakland, California, introduced me to many of the engineers in the San Francisco area. Magnus Bjjzfrndal of Weehawken, New Jersey, rendered a similar service in the New York area. In addition, he generously supplied considerable information, published and unpublished, and he read about half of the chapters in early manuscript form many of his suggestions were followed in revising these chapters. Like B rndal, C. F. Berg of Gary, Illinois, has long been active in collecting records of the Nor wegian engineers he made many items available. His sage advice was most effective in reworking the first four and the last two chapters of the book. M. S. Grytbak, bridge engineer of St. Paul, gave invaluable assistance in the preparation of the chapter on bridges... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great gifl for boys
I gave a copy of this book to each of my grandsons, along with a hand-made apron with a large central pocket. They have each found something they like to prepare in their book. What a wonderful way to teach boys they can cook and do it well.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great cookbook!
i loved this cookbook when i was little and still enjoy it now. i read it over and over again. it's actually quite charming and has a nice little story line to go along with the recipes and it's full of interesting nutrition facts. it does have recipes for sweets, but kids deserve treats now and then, and homemade sweets are certainly better than candy or any of those horrible snacks that are filled with chemicals and food-coloring. overall the food is very "wholesome". BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR KIDS! adults have a responsibility to encourage healthy eating and this book will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars best kids cookbook out there!
This has to be the best cookbook for kids ever written.I remember loving this book as a young girl and checking it out of the library constantly. The reason that I liked it so much is because, not only does it give yourecipies, but it also follows a storyline.I also loved this book becausethe recipies werent too complicated and actually WORKED, which was veryimportant for me, the perfectionist 10 year old. This is an awesome bookfor any kid, boy or girl, and I guarantee that they will enjoy it as muchas I did.I also recommend any of the other books written by ChristinaBjork and Lena Anderson. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BIOLOGY: The study of life laboratory manual
It is a great lab manual for high school students. Some activities can be done in classroom and do not require a lab setting. Students can get deeper understanding without the hassle of using complicated chemicals or lab tools. It is a must have for any high school teacher who is teaching biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful in understanding the main idea
I used this textbook as a supplement study tool for my high school biology class. This is one of the most comprehensive texts that I've come across. The content is easy to understand and the diagrams are coherent. If you are looking for a book that translates biological jargon, this is the definitely the one. This book has helped me get throught the SAT II's and other standardized tests.I also recommend buying the test data bank, which also runs by the same author and publisher. The depth of the topics covered, do not reach beyond a high school level general biology class. For AP Biology or general biology in college, I suggest you to purchase "Life on Earth" by Gerald and Teresa Audesirk or "Biology" by Neil A. Campbell and Jane B. Reece.

Product Description
Feeling initially aimless and out of place in rural Nepal where she accompanied her anthropologist husband for a year of fieldwork, Katharine Bjork Guneratne turned to writing to make sense of her sojourn in the shadow of the Himalaya. The resulting book is both an acute portrait of a village and an intimate account of her struggles to adapt to a different way of life. Like the best cultural travel narratives, In the Circle of the Dance draws on the author's experiences to illuminate both exterior and interior worlds.Bjork's book is in many ways a primer on the realities of fieldwork, from setting up house to participating in the work of the village women to finding ways to communicate across cultural divides. It describes how this outsider achieved a gradual and provisional inclusion in the community, an inclusion represented by her participation in a traditional women's circle dance. The book also depicts the effects of modernization and tourism on a society that remained closed to the West well into this century, while offering comparative insights about wider South Asian cultures. The author's lyrical, frequently moving descriptions of everyday life guide her readers through the stages of her cultural apprenticeship. In the end, as Bjork joins the circle dance, she is a stranger to the community still, but a familiar and welcome one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very thoughtful and insightful
Before I travel I always look for a book to describe the country. I don't like the usual travelogue that might just describe the monuments or temples.

I look for one which describes the every day lives of the people there. And so I ordered this book.... wow. It is a description of rural life in a village in the terai of Nepal, the lowlands near the border with India. The author spent time with the local women while her spouse did his field work for an anthropology PhD. The writing goes between descriptions of rural life and includes some passages detailing what was going through her mind at the time in terms of how her own cultural background influenced her realtionships in the host culture. The perspective which she brought was amazing to me - a very mature and thoughful outlook indeed!

After my own trip to Nepal I will know more about whether to recommend this I suppose - but in the meantime, I enjoyed reading it, it was wonderfully done, and it stands by itself very well as an example of wonderful travel writing esp if you are interested in the daily life of people from a very differetn culture than our own...

The Oxford Dictionary of the Middle Ages is a major new reference resource for all key aspects of European history, society, religion, and culture from circa 500 CE to circa 1500 CE. During this time, neighboring areas of Asia and North Africa greatly influenced and helped shape the civilization of the West. Relevant aspects of the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic dynasties, and Asiatic peoples such as the Avars and the Mongols are also included in this comprehensive work. Coverage spanning the whole geographical extent of the European Middle Ages and balanced treatments of sixteen topics centrally important to the study of the period distinguish The Oxford Dictionary of the Middle Ages from all other resources on the subject.

Over 800 scholars, guided by a five-member international advisory board and an international editorial board of twenty-six, have written the over 5,000 entries that make up this extraordinary four-volume set. These entries have been lavishly supplemented by more than 500 illustrations and 40 maps. Product Description

Frederick Klaeber's Beowulf has long been the standard edition for study by students and advanced scholars alike. Its wide-ranging coverage of scholarship, its comprehensive philological aids, and its exceptionally thorough notes and glossary have ensured its continued use in spite of the fact that the book has remained largely unaltered since 1936. The fourth edition has been prepared with the aim of updating the scholarship while preserving the aspects of Klaeber's work that have made it useful to students of literature, linguists, historians, folklorists, manuscript specialists, archaeologists, and theorists of culture.

A revised Introduction and Commentary incorporates the vast store of scholarship on Beowulf that has appeared since 1950. It brings readers up to date on areas of scholarship that have been controversial since the last edition, including the construction of the unique manuscript and views on the poem's date and unity of composition. The lightly revised text incorporates the best textual criticism of the intervening years, and the expanded Commentary furnishes detailed bibliographic guidance to discussion of textual cruces, as well as to modern and contemporary critical concerns. Aids to pronunciation have been added to the text, and advances in the study of the poem's language are addressed throughout. Readers will find that the book remains recognizably Klaeber's work, but with altered and added features designed to render it as useful today as it has ever been.

being recently retired, i decided to actually read all the books i only read parts of in my college days (meaning homer/s illiad & odyssey in greek & virgil/s aeneid in latin). after 9 years of latin and quite a few of greek, i thought my one semester of old english would get me thru beowulf pretty fast. i was *wrong*. it/s more complicated than that. klaeber/s edition (i have 2 copies, one i mark up, and one is pristine) has *almost* everything you need to translate it for yourself. while it strives for completion (and almost reaches it), you are still going to need clark hall & merrit/s dictionary, and a good grammar. this is one of the great books in any language. almost everything you ever wanted to know about the poem is here. hey, i may buy a *third* copy, just because it is *that* good !

5-0 out of 5 stars At long last, more of the same

I look forward to working through Beowulf 4 (with Beowulf 3) to see what Klaeber himself hoped to see - the ongoing recovery and elucidation of a noble text.
I think Klaeber himself would be pleased.
Although I believe he would have recalled that the Cotton emperors have among them the fascinating Cleopatra, p. xxvi footnote 5 ... Read more
