Editorial Review

Product Description
This is the first monograph to be published on analyticD-modules and it offers a complete and systematic treatment of thefoundations together with a thorough discussion of such modern topicsas the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence, Bernstein--Sata polynomialsand a large variety of results concerning microdifferentialanalysis.
Analytic D-module theory studies holomorphic differential systems oncomplex manifolds. It brings new insight and methods into many areas, such as infinite dimensional representations of Lie groups, asymptoticexpansions of hypergeometric functions, intersection cohomology onKahler manifolds and the calculus of residues in several complexvariables.
The book contains seven chapters and has an extensive appendix whichis devoted to the most important tools which are used in D-moduletheory. This includes an account of sheaf theory in the context ofderived categories, a detailed study of filtered non-commutative ringsand homological algebra, and the basic material in symplectic geometryand stratifications on complex analytic sets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Part One!
This work is the second volume in the Holme Trilogy. This is an interesting & unique body of work, because the hero in this Viking saga isn't the traditional warrior - his slave is. Holme has freed himself & his family from the homestead that kept them as slaves all their lives. Venturing to a fictionalized trade city, based on the actual town of Birka, Holme ends up becoming a master smith & a man well-respected (by some) & feared (by all). Holme is not satisfied with just his family being free, but goes on to fight for all thralls to become freemen. Another theme in the trilogy that gains more importance in this book, is the spread of Christianity into the heathen land where most people worship barbaric & crude wooden gods. As Holme gets used to being around people, his intelligence & philosophy become sharper, & as in the last novel, there's virtually no dialogue and the book will slip from a modern-day narrator to Holme or other character's own stream-of-consciousness narrating the tale. As in the first book, this is a wonderful story, loaded with beautiful & haunting imagry. The descriptions are vivid & striking. The author is a brilliant artist, making this one of the best books I've ever read. ... Read more

Product Description
One of the most important but least studied of medieval chant repertories is that of the Kyrie. With their Latin texts, Kyrie melodies represented musical ambitions manifested alongside of and subsequent to Gregorian chant - ambitions which achieved stylistic and formal distinction. This study illuminates those features of the early Kyrie that give it its distinctive character and set it apart not only from Gregorian chant but also from other types of medieval chant. The repertory focused on in this book is a group of 22 West Frankish sources which are believed to have originated in several Aquitanian locations. The tradition represented by these manuscripts and their repertory of Kyrie melodies can be followed across a century and a half, from 950 to 1100. The Aquitanian manuscript tradition is significant because these sources represent by far the largest group of closely inter-related musical sources from the period, and the musical notation gives reliable indication of pitch up to a century earlier than other manuscripts of the time.By incorporating both a detailed musical study and transcriptions of these sources this book should be of interest to those who are concerned with the construction of these pieces as well as to those who wish to appreciate them, or even perform them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL book.
This is one of the best books i've read. Fridegard is the worlds most underrated writer. The book basically tells the story of Fridegard himself,he just added some action so it would be more fun to read. Fridegard had ahard time getting the book published because of it's sincere and harshlanguage. I would recommend anyone to read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable account of Indonesian education
Don't get fooled by the boring cover: Indonesian Education is an enjoyable account of how history can create its own barriers to progress. To be exact, it tells a story of how school-based actors respond to central government's policy to decentralize education that began in early 1990s in Indonesia.

Chris Bjork, however, uses this account to enlighten his readers of a broader story -- a puzzle, in fact -- he found during his preliminary visits, to wit, how Indonesian teachers saw their professional responsibility not, primarily, to provide instructions but instead as an executor of central government policy.

Taking history as his starting point, he argues, compellingly, that given the New Order government's obsession with nation-building, teachers are "set up" to become extensions of the state apparatus. Hence, in other words, teachers become 'teacher-bureaucrats' -- emphasis often on the latter.

Bjork then goes on to show how this came in conflict with the government's own plan to decentralize education as a way to improve quality. While decentralization required teachers to take initiative, the institutional culture set up by the New Order adamantly refused to allow teacher initiative and innovation back into schools.

The book distills Bjork's 13-month study in the late 1990s. Despite the fact that it has that typical dissertation-like structure, it is very well written, interspersed with lots of narratives that are both interesting and engrossing. It's fun to read. Clearly, a must-read for people interested in the development of education policy in developing countries. ... Read more
