Product Description
Although psychoanalytic theory is one of the most potent and influential tools in contemporary literary criticism, to date it has had very little impact on the study of African American literature. Critical methods from the disciplines of history, sociology, and cultural studies have dominated work in the field. Now, in this exciting new book by the author of Domestic Allegories: The Black Heroine's Text at the Turn of the Century, Claudia Tate demonstrates that psychoanalytic paradigms can produce rich and compelling readings of African American textuality. With clear and accessible summaries of key concepts in Freud, Lacan, and Klein, as well as deft reference to the work of contemporary psychoanalytic critics of literature, Tate explores African- American desire, alienation, and subjectivity in neglected novels by Emma Kelley, W.E.B. Du Bois, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, and Nella Larsen. Her pioneering approach highlights African American textual realms within and beyond those inscribing racial oppression and modes of black resistance. A superb introduction to psychoanalytic theory and its applications for African American literature and culture, this book creates a sophisticated critical model of black subjectivity and desire for use in the study of African American texts. ... Product Description
In her continuing work with ACOAs, Dr. Claudia Black saw some people hit a baffling "wall" in their recovery. She began to realize that certain conditions and circumstances could halt an individual's progress if left unidentified. These "Double Duty and Dual Identity" issues are the itensified life experiences of ACOAs who have had to contend not only with family alcoholism or dysfunction, but who have an additional dynamic that has profoundly affected their lives and their recovery.Having been sexually abused is just such a double duty issue.

Children living in alcoholic homes are less able to defend themselves against sexual abuse than non-COAs:they have more to fear about trusting their own perceptions, and more confusion about appropriate boundaries.Their sense of powerlessness over the chaos in their homes becomes total powerlessness over their own bodies. The abandonment, betrayal, and shame they experience can result in depression, panic attacks, phobias, and addiction to alcohol, drugs, or food.

This helpful volume, which has been adapted from the longer work DOUBLE DUTY, is designed for the Adult Child who was sexually abused. You will find three life stories of recovering people, as well as Claudia Black's inspiring commentary, and her groundbreaking work on how focusing on your own individual history can help you break through the "wall" to the happiness on the other side.

Product Description
A decade has passed since Claudia Black's million-copy bestseller, It Will Never Happen to Me, set countless individuals on the path to self-discovery. Now, in The Missing Piece, Black teams up with therapist and lecturer Leslie Drozd to give you the courage, practical information, and the loving guidance to take the next step on your journey to wholeness.
In this new book, Black and Drozd explore the life crisis experienced by individuals consumed with the nagging feeling that "something's missing." These vague, unsettling feelings often take the form of unexplained anger or fear, a sense of inadequacy or ambivalence, the inability to commit, or depression that comes and goes. They trace this condition to the conflicting and often disowned pieces of self in all of us that compete for attention and expression: critic, pusher, judge, victim, spiritual seeker, perfectionist, nurturer, protector, aggressor, and procrastinator, among others. Only by defining and embracing all aspects of the self--both good and bad--can we find "the missing piece" that truly liberates and empowers us.
The journey is not a guided tour. This dynamic book engages you in a series of inspiring and challenging questionnaires, exercises, and dialogues. It's an active process in which you will learn how to assemble a complex self-portrait of all your parts--the owned, the disowned, and the unknown.
Understanding all the aspects of your self is the first step. But this path must also include moving from questions to answers, and then from answers to actions. In the final section, you'll learn how to forge lasting bonds between all the competing aspects of your self, to achieve a sense of balance between your inner and outer worlds, and to dare to live the truth about yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful tool for discovering all your inner resources.
For anyone who has felt their behavior tended to shift from situation to situation, this is a great tool for discovering who you really are.It keys into the current psychological debate on parts of self and shows you how to harness and create harmony among your parts.

Suddenly "disharmony" takes on a new meaning because you can figure out which part needs attention.I no longer send child parts to do adult work.Best of all is when I can speak for all the parts because it conveys a centerness and power I never knew before.Outstanding book for anyone with the courage to work through the exercises and discover themself (selves). ... I use this book with clients in their therapy. It's excellent in documenting the distinction between an affirming and a harmful family dynamic, how the negatives arise in us and how we can help, as clinicians and as individual lay person, make life better.Education being the key to understand what happened to the children carrying multiple burdens, and how we can start to redefine lives, our own and others. ... Product Description
Why did late nineteenth-century African-American women novelists use idealized stories of bourgeois courtship and marriage to mount arguments on social reform during a time when resurgent racism conditioned the lives of all black Americans? This is the question at the center of Tate's examination of the novels of Pauline Hopkins, Emma Kelley, Amelia Johnson, Katherine Tillman, and Frances Harper. ... Read more
