5-0 out of 5 stars And the Future is Now!
From the opening scene to the last, I was hooked and completely drawn in on the lives of the two main characters. This is a perfect example of bad things happening to good people. Even before they were born the cards were being shuffled and stacked against Amanda and Eric. Sloppy workplaces and unqualified personnel can have a devastating effect on the lives of future generations.

Amanda and Eric were strongly attracted to each other, unfortunately, partly because of their love of the same hobby. Following their hearts, and continuing with their passion of running and exploring the beautiful trails that abound in Marin County, they were wed. Only after the birth of their first child did they come to learn about the complicated world of genetics.

After closing the book on the final page, I couldn't help but wonder what anyone would do in the same situation that Amanda found herself in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frozen Identity
Such talent for this author's first book!I was very impressed how Karen Lee Black was able to bring this plot around in such a way that it really made the reader wonder about the moral dilemmas that were presented in this book.Being somewhat familiar with Marin County, I particularly enjoyed the setting of this story.Karen, the author, would be a daughter that will make any mother very proud! ... Product Description
Matt Tillet, an F-8 Crusader pilot, is shot down overNorth Vietnam in 1966, just one week before his ship would be headinghome after his second back-to-back six-month tour.Escaping from hisspiraling out-of-control jet with only seconds to spare, and evadingfor all of three minutes, he becomes a Prisoner of War.Survivingtorture, months of solitary confinement and the infamous Hanoi March, the dream of returning home to his wife and two children keeps himgoing. Repatriated in 1973, he returns to find his dream shattered.

Code of Conduct takes place in the middle of a war; however, it is not so much a blood and guts war novel as it is the emotional tale of a family torn apart by war, more than seven years of separation, and the long journey to reconstruct their lives.

While many POWs came home to broken marriages, the personal relationship portion of the book is purely fictional. The prison scenes are based on actual events that happened to the POWs in Vietnam. The story was inspired by many years of listening to the recollections of the author's husband and several of his Vietnam ex-POW buddies. Time does not seem to have faded their memories of what they went through (although they can now joke about it) and each reunion or get together provided a new tidbit.

The author's goal is to present the horrendous prisoner-of-warexperience and the resulting shattered personal lives in the format ofa novel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Code of Conduct; A review.
As a retired Naval Intelligence Officer, I would swear this book was based on fact! It is written in the finest tradition of a Biography. I was lucky enough to debrief a Naval Fighter Pilot, who was shot down in Vietnam, his experience closely ressembles the one in Code of Conduct. It is one of the finest books written that I have ever read concerning the God Awful trials our Men went through who were captured by the Viet Cong.A Must Read. Jim Mcleod, Lcdr. USN Ret.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey to Hell and Back
I was totally unprepared for this book.I think I was expecting a trashy romance novel with a cursory Vietnam Prisoner of War theme thrown in for flavor. What I got was a gut-wrenching page turner that truly captures the sacrifice and emotional turmoil of war.Code of Conduct follows the career of a Navy fighter pilot from the downing of his aircraft in 1966, through seven years of torture and solitary confinement in the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp, to his return to America and his family. But, after seven years of clinging to the dream, his homecoming is not at all what he expects.Karen Black spins a tale of loss, emotional devestation, and - finally - healing.

Jeff Edwards, Author of `Torpedo: A Surface Warfare Thriller'

5-0 out of 5 stars Vailia Dennis
A must read bookNot the usual war-story book but one that goes far deeper. It is superbly divided between the prisoner of war, the woman whose husband was missing for seven years, and the family dynamics caused by the years of separation. Her story and her pain equals that of her husband. It is a book you will never want to put down and one you will never forget. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Started out as a fun read
I enjoyed the book until about the last third, when it became a whiny, self-serving rant.I was naively reading the book as fiction, when suddenly the tone just seemed wrong, and I started researching. The book is a thinly designed excuse to skirt a nondisparagement agreement.Who is the author kidding?Don't waste your time.Pathetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars great read!
Fabulous read and not as boring as the usual "chick lit" that I have grown acustommed to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a good editor
I got this as a Kindle freebie, which tends to instantly lower my expectations, but maybe I should have gone even lower. This book is just dull. It reads more like a teenage girl's diary than a novel. It tries to be hip and funny and edgy and insider-y and cool, but it's just plain dull. Obviously the writer has no idea what the New York publishing world is like. The narrator is whiny and weak and also somehow a mega-celebrity magazine editor? She started her own magazine but is cowed by some witchy bosses whose only goal in life is to conspire against her to ruin her life? The plot goes from childish to just plain dumb as things unravel. And the only the names have been changed paralleling of the Jane magazine/Jane Pratt story is so obvious its ridiculous. If Jane Pratt really did have anything to do with this (as some reviewers have speculated) I've lost all respect for her.

And don't get me started on mundane writing, unimaginative dialogue and grammar errors. A good editor would have gone a long way toward punching this up to the level of decent chick lit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ho-hum
The Devil Wears Prada didn't do much for me. The idea of writing about the experience of working for one of fashion's most notorious bosses was terrific. Lauren Weisberger's writing style and ability...not so much. I had higher hopes for Karen Yampolsky's Falling Out of Fashion, a 2007 roman à clef about her ex-boss, Jane Pratt, because I faithfully read the snarky and irreverent Jane magazine on a regular basis. I liked Yampolsky's book more than I did Weisbergers, but not by much. Had itnot been a free download for Kindle last month, I'd have felt ripped off because the book reads less like a work of fiction than it does a book-length "as told to" biography of Jane Pratt, where only the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

The details of her protagonist's life are presented in a matter of fact fashion, the good, the bad, and the selfish, and the honesty is never begrudging, but that positive quality is also its main flaw. If you're a true Jane Pratt watcher, you probably know the answers to the "who is she writing about?" guessing game presented in the book, and if you're more casually interested, try Wikipedia. But there's really no need to read the book itself as it's impossible to separate the fictional Jill White from the real Jane Pratt. For a work of fiction, that's an unsurmountable problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Falling out of fashion
i enjoyed this book. It shows a strong woman in Jill, and how working with women can be a back stabbing experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking up is hard -- and some people take it harder than others
Breaking up is hard -- and some people take it harder than others. "Moondance" is a original novel by Karen M. Black which follows one Althea Brecht as she is betrayed by her longtime boyfriend. In her attempt to get over him, she makes bad mistakes. Her mind begins to play tricks on her, and she turns to the supernatural with not much else left to turn to. Deftly written "Moondance" is a journey into Althea's mind, and an entertaining read every step of the way. ... Read more
