3-0 out of 5 stars Geared more toward young adult fans
This book was ok. I felt it was really written for young fans who might want to follow his footsteps. There is a bit of history here, as if to show Blaine is respectful of the past masters and not cocky. Not completely dull, I remember he does give a least one simple trick as a bone, but not extremly compelling - perhaps that is part of the point, the craft is not all glamour and is laden with repetitive training & hard work. Try to get it at the public library unless you are a fanatic about this guy.

AMAZING BOOK.If you are a David Blaine fan it is a must have.I will keep this review short. He goes into the history of magic, explaining the lifes of many famous magicians. He tells his own story from his childhood to his stunt Frozan in Time.He also explains how he first started in magic to where he is now.He explains a couple of card tricks, which is nice.He explains Buried Alive, Frozen in Time, and Vertigo. All I have to say is the book is amazing, and after I read this book the magic really got into me and I have started practicing and learning magic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great facts about life in the music Biz first hand!
A great read for musicians, and music lovers! Many things about music and show biz, you won't find anywhere else! Also many rare photographs from his personal collection. Hal tells it like it is, and was!

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy Earl Palmer's Book Instead Of This
As a top session drummer since the late 1950's, Hal Baine has played on over 40 number one hit records. You would think he would have enough material from all that experience to write five books the size of this one.

There are a few insights here. For example, Hal Blaine played on some of the Beach Boys' records, and he describes Brian Wilson's unusual piano style.Rather than play a bass line with his left hand and chords and melody with his right, like most piano players, Wilson played chords with both hands and the notes he played with his right hand were the harmony parts for the rest of the group to sing.

More often the book disappoints. You would think that the studio band was called the "Wrecking Crew" because they were unbeatable musicians right?Well according to Blaine they were called the "Wrecking Crew" because they didn't wipe out the ash trays and left the recording studio untidy when they were finished for the day.

The biggest problem with this book is what it leaves out. There just isn't as much new and interesting information here as there should be given the number of sessions Blaine played on. I suspect that the author is holding back.He seems like he doesn't want to disclose too much in his book because it might jeopardize future drumming gigs, so his loyalty is primarily to his past (and possible future) employers rather than to his readers.

The book is pleasant and easy to read, but if you are interested in this subject I would suggest that you read Earl Palmer's book first.Palmer is also a drummer and a contemporary of Blaine's.While Blaine is bland and pleasant, Palmer is swaggering and arrogant, and decidedly more interesting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull and superficial
As much as I enjoy a lot of the music Hal Blaine has contributed to, I found little to enjoy about this book.Blaine offers nothing interesting or insightful about himself or the music business, just superficialoutlines of his life and some of the people he worked with. He's curiouslyvague about the details of his own life (he either got his own birthdatewrong or consistently misstated his age by a year in the early part of thebook, and he talks about women he married without even mentioning theirnames), and he seems to have little real knowledge of the performers heworked with (he repeats the erroneous claim that Mama Cass died fromchoking on food, for example, and a whole chapter about working with theMonkees actually covers a Mike Nesmith project that had nothing to do withthe Monkees). He also played with some of the most popular pop/rock groupsof the 1960s and 1970s (the Byrds, the Carpenters, Simon & Garfunkel),but none of them merits even a single mention in the book.

If Blaine hadan interesting story he wanted to tell, he should have found a bettercollaborator.

4-0 out of 5 stars Music Industry Legend Remembers
This is a great book if you are a fan of '60s music.Hal helped lay the foundation for much of it.He also heavily influenced many drummers who followed, including Keith Moon of the Who.He outlines his musicaltraining, inspiration, and dues paying. He features amusing anecdotesabout working with legends of the industry, including Phil Spector, BrianWilson of the Beach Boys, and Sinatra. It makes you realize how muchcredit he, along with other members of studio musicians known as the"Wrecking Crew", deserve for shaping their artists' visions, astheir improv and input helped make those records so great.A must-have,especially if you are a drummer or ever wished you could be one.Theydon't make 'em like Hal anymore.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful behind-the-scenes view of a great era in music
I originally purchased this book after finding out that Hal Blaine was themost recorded musician in musical history: I knew that there had to besomething "magical" about his talents! The book did much toreveal at least a bit of that magic: a great sense of humour, a love forthe craft, and an abiding respect for the musicians he played with.

Now,I find it impossible to listen to music from the sixties and earlyseventies without saying to myself "Aha -- that's a Hal Blainetrack". The Beach Boys, the Byrds, Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, FrankSinatra...even my all time favorite song, the Cascades "Rhythm of theRain"...all have been graced by his exceptional drumming.

This is anexcellent book for anyone who is interested in the creative process --musical or otherwise.

Also included is a list of all the top-ten songs hewas involved in: the list is four pages long (!)

The only reason I giveit four stars instead of five is that I wish it were longer . ... Read more

Book Description

Some 50 years ago I, the author, decided to discover those cultural, governmental and economic circumstances that would best benefit each individual in a given nation.I became a student of economics and Judeo-Christian scripture.History is littered with great and powerful nations that have fallen prey to lesser powers. Why?What sapped the strength of the mighty until the weak could destroy?

I have come to understand seven rules of operation, or postulates, which, if obeyed, keeps a nation strong and prosperous. And yes, one of them has to do with moral concerns. The other six relate to distribution of wealth and power within society.Due to moral decay and excessive aggregation of wealth and power to the few, both the United States and the world are on the brink of a terrible destruction.Presented are those reforms (a total agenda) that will pull us from that brink, and the rationale as to why these reforms are absolutely necessary.

A total reform of tax/spending is needed.Unfortunately Mobipocket graphics did not allow inclusion of the proposed tax & calculation forms.

Our near term future is tragic, but longer term the nation will be rebuilt and will prosper.Old Glory will eventually fly over a nation that will occupy all from Guatemala to the North Pole. This new nation will be a just and a free nation; based in the principles of the original US Constitution.

Book Description

The United States and the world are fast approaching a depression. This book explainswhat a depession is, its root cause, and reforms that must be accomplished to avoid it.Central to this is a unique system of taxing and social spending, which will give any national government much better control over its economy, while actually diminishing regulation.Subtitle: A GENERAL THEORY ON THE GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT, AND DISSOLUTION OF NATIONS.

If the larger nations do not implement these, or very similar reforms, economic chaos will soon lead to wars and famine.

This is a tough read.Only those desiring to survie will get through it. ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS.

Book Description
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;
He leadeth me bedside the still waters;
He restoreth my soul.

Today's professionals need reliable models to teach them how to become better leaders. In this remarkable book, leadership experts Blaine McCormick and David Davenport introduce us to a new kind of leader by offering a new image of leadership— the leader as shepherd.
Drawing on the wisdom of the timeless Twenty-Third Psalm, King David's psalm, the authors provide professionals with ancient wisdom for grappling with today's leadership challenges. Shepherd Leadership offers a much-needed lens through which to consider our own leadership as well as the leadership of those around us. This important book teaches us important lessons about leadership: we can be vigilant without being adversarial, we can serve without being passive, and we can guide without commanding. Shepherd Leadership offers a visionary new model for transforming leadership practices in both corporate and small business settings. This is whole-person leadership. It's not just a matter of thinking or doing things a certain way. It's a fully integrated life— a matter of head and hand and heart. It's a way of thinking and doing and being.

5-0 out of 5 stars The heart of leadership that lasts
Dr. McCormick helps us get it "right." Servant leadership is all about knowing and living this truth: One leads most effectively when serving.....and one serves best by leading. This is the biblical pattern of leadership and when genuinely lived in one's everyday world it works as long as it is congruent with one's heart. Dr. McCormick also helps us understand that for one to consistently live the pattern of leadership that one must stay very close to the One who is the source of pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough love at its best
Shepherd leadership is not for wimps. It is for leaders who want to be both strong and servant leaders. Both emphasisze vision, teaching, and service, but only servant leadership notes how leaders most have an edge, meaning they must make tough decisions.
This book has a number of practical suggestions for today's leaders who must both listen and direct.Leaders must add new skills to their arsenal, including being more accessible, genuine, and interactive. Many challenges for leaders are included in the book with practical solutions. It is a great approach using wisdom from a popular psalms with practical applications and stories. It is tough love for today's leaders in these tough times.

5-0 out of 5 stars A more effective management style
Book Review by Robert Tunmire (from Baylor Business Review, Fall '03)

Many leaders, like me, have highly dominant personalities. We may struggle with the "softer side" of managing. Shepherd Leadership: Wisdom for Leaders from Psalm 23 gives us excellent reasoning and examples of how a "softer" - yet truthful and effective - approach can be a more effective management style.

The analogy of the leader as shepherd is a credible one, and presented in a straightforward manner. The authors clearly lay out, guided by Psalm 23, what a shepherd's responsibilities are and how that applies to a leader's responsibilities in the real world of business. Each chapter ends with two items: "Shepherd Thinking," and "Shepherd Doing," assisting with application of the chapter's concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Model
In Shepherd Leadership, McCormick and Davenport present a refreshing model of leadership which takes the person as a whole into account. As someone who is young in my career, I found this book valuable in helping to develop my management style and philosophy.I left business school with strategies, theories, and policy, but very little in the way of leadership practices, which left me treading water when first entering a management role.

One section that stood out for me was the shepherd leader's toolkit. The compass and the frame represent two valuable practices for leaders at any level. The compass reminds you to set clear direction to navigate through the maze of information, reports, meetings, and endless action items that you encounter on a daily basis. The frame sets boundaries and expectations for your organization while still allowing your employees room to creatively explore new approaches.

A fantastic read for anyone who's just been thrown in the deep end of management!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brevity is the soul of wisdom!!!
I understand the aphroism is really "brevity is the soul of wit" - but this small volume demands that the phrase be recast.McCormick and Davenport take the 23rd Psalm apart and suggest some basic principles about leadership that come from the psalm. The book is loaded with examples of each of the styles or main points. But perhaps even more valuable is a series of suggestions to work with the principles established in each chapter.

I found the most interesting issue raised in the book one about Supply Side management.I have been a CEO of an organization for more than a dozen years.McCormick and Davenport suggest that the role of a leader is too often looked at from the demand side of the equation - those inevitable lists. But leaders should also consider the supply side - what excites you about the job?How does one find those niches which make the lists of to dos a bit less demanding. Many leadership jobs seem to be comparable to that of Sisyphus. But with a little attention to the supply side - those inevitable demands become less onerous.
