5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book--very motivating
I went through Henry Penix's The Gift - Box Set, which includes this book.In Unwrap Your Gift, Penix asks his reader numerous introspective questions to really get you thinking about who you, uniquely, are. I am taking time off from college due to becoming over-stressed, and before I went through this program, I was floundering, losing self-esteem, and becoming depressed. Thinking creatively on Penix's questions and writing down (in The Gift - Box Set's interactive journal) steps to materialize my goals has given me greater self-confidence, drive, and direction. I would recommend this program to anyone. All you need is a creative, open mind, willingness to explore your own heart, and thirst for positive change. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How can you have a Am Hist book w/o Tubman?
I found this book for a penny and that price is deserving. I didn't read the book, I looked at the index to see if any of the major players including Sojourner Truth and Crispus Attucks were there, most noteably Harriet Tubman. She was not there and neither were the others. So, this book isn't worth it, not even for a penny...

4-0 out of 5 stars a good value
For this price, it's hard to complain about this book. It's relatively fat for a trade paperback, but the reading is pretty easy and its certainly no chore to read all the way through if you're at all interested in U.S. history. This is a great option for those who have forgotten much of what they're learned in high school or college courses in American History and want to get a general overview of the topic. Those interested in specific periods and topics will likely require additional resources, but neverthless may find this book to be an excellent starting point.

4-0 out of 5 stars up to WW-2: great, though dated american history book -post WW-2 is nonsense
I actually read the original edition of the book, written at the outbreak of WW-2, and printed in 1943. This, like other paperbacks, was meant to be carried into battle by american soldiers. So, to address the criticisms of it leveled by others: of course it was "Rah rah, USA and FDR." Those were the times. This book was written for young men from the cornfields, girding themselves for war with the monstrous Nazis and Kamikazis. Those were serious times; the destiny of the world was in the hands of the men who kept this book in their canvas pants.

One of the problems in america today is, writing this sort of book is now impossible. Modern day left leaning 'historians' -the intellectual heirs to the gentlemen who wrote this book, can't seem to write fair minded, to say nothing of patriotic histories of this country. They've descended into a destructive nihilism, wallowing in moralistic guilt. The idea of being proud of american labor achievements, or the genius of the founding fathers is anathema. The idea of telling the story of the forces which shaped the nation's destiny (for example, the role of late 19th century mining and cattle interests in the west, or the cultural differences between northern and southern colonies) without some sort of wailing for the indignities suffered by the indians or whatnot is as impossible to a modern leftie american historian as translating Homer into Algonquin would be. This is an enormous tragedy; the modern 'left' has simply given up on serious history. This sort of book is a useful antidote. It is written by patriotic left leaning gentlemen. People who love the country they lived in, and who were proud of its achievements. They spoke openly of many of the problems faced by the country, and of the many missteps made, but their criticisms were sane and rational, rather than shrill and monstrous. This book enlightened me more than any other as to how the national character was formed, and what the achievements of the past have been. It is leftist, but it is leftist in the glorious "human future" JFK sense of the word, not the horrifying Michael Moore version of the word. I can't recommend it enough up to the WW-2 era. I hoped this book would be kept up to date, in the same spirit as it originally had. It saddens me that the post WW-2 'updates' by Jeffrey Morris marred the marvellous optimism and historical detachment of the previous sections. His sections on more recent history are about as worthless as reading a newspaper editorial would be.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Source of Help
I bought this book in the summer before my A.P. United History course to start up on some pre-studying.I am not that great of a student, and I have a really hard time reading the school text books. This book is really captivating and goes into detail when needed. It has an index for easy finding, and is chronilogically ordered. This book is a great source of information, and will help anyone trying to do well in a United States history course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Political Bias Included
This pocketbook of American history starts off with a refreshing analysis of history: uplifting, optimistic, forward-looking, balanced in its approach, and critical when such attention is due. However, the authors, who are attempting to write a mainstream history of the United States, often times showcased their left-of-center bias.

FDR's socialistic policies were praised without much meaningful criticism.Instead, they give the impression that these governmental programs were absolutely essential, without any critical look at the New Deal's great failure--namely, in that it failed to lower unemployment (read FDR's Folly, a recent book, for more information on this issue). So consumed with love for liberalism they were unable to focus on how FDR actually increased unemployment by attacking large corporations and successful banks.

The authors do not appear to understand modern Milton Friedman economics, blindly believing that tax cuts create deficits, and thus their harsh criticsm of Reagan, even though it was Democrats who created the deficit through lavish social spending. In fact, the most successful presidents in modern history--all Republicans--Eisenhower, Reagan, and Bush I, were treated as though they were just wasting historical time.Their accomplishments were not given the treatment that they deserve.

The authors also believed that the government ought to spend more money on "public" needs--essentially, taking money away from the public to hand over to elites to spend. This is a gross distortion of what is construed as the "public interest" and it is unfortunate that such commentary was included in a mainstream history book.

Although they painted a very bright picture of America in a historical perspective, far better than today's Democrats are willing to confer on our nation, it still lacked the objective analysis I was hoping for in a history book.

The Author of these Journals requested me, in January 1865, a few days before his death, to take charge of them with a view to publication at some future time. He left that time to my discretion, merely remarking that Memoirs of this kind ought not, in his opinion, to be locked up until they had lost their principal interest by the death of all those who had taken any part in the events they describe.

From the author: ABSTRACT. Objective: The effects of hypercortisolism on hippocampal volume have not been studied in heavy drinkers. Prior work suggested increased hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity in relation to lowered total hippocampus volume (THV) in heavy-drinking alcohol-dependent (AD) subjects. The present study hypothesized the following: (1) that chronic heavy-drinking subjects would demonstrate significantly higher salivary cortisol concentrations than light-drinking control subjects and (2) that data from the whole sample group would present an inverse relationship between cortisol concentration and THV. Method: In carefully selected test and control subject groups matched for age, gender, and ethnicity, we measured salivary cortisol samples at waking, waking + 30 minutes, noon, and 4 PM on the day of magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. We next compared mean cortisol concentrations between groups and assessed the statistical association between cortisol concentration and hippocampus volume measures. Results: Comparison of AD test subjects (n = 8) and non-AD control subjects (n = 8) found significantly higher cortisol concentrations at both morning sampling times (mean [SD] at waking: 0.49 [0.23] vs 0.24 [0.14] [micro]g/dl, p = .012; at waking + 30 minutes: 0.57 [0.37] vs 0.28 [0.11] [micro]g/dl, p = 0.043). Controlling for intracranial volume, there was a significant inverse correlation between waking cortisol concentration and THV (p = .007) in the total sample group (N= 16). However, when analyzed separately, only the control group maintained a strong, inverse association (p = .025). There was no association among the heavy drinking subjects. Conclusions: These early data in a small sample support the view that chronic heavy drinking results in high salivary cortisol concentrations. What remains unclear is whether hypercortisolism exerts a selectively injurious effect that results in observed hippocampus volume loss. Further research in larger groups using more frequent, monitored sampling must address the following: (1) whether this finding can be replicated and (2) if replicated, whether the lack of an association between low hippocampal volumes and high cortisol levels may indicate an extent of injury beyond which a normal association of the two may be lost.

Product Description
The seventh edition of the Encyclopedia of American History updates this indispensable and classic reference book to cover the history of the United States from pre-Columbian times through the first year of the Clinton Administration. Unequaled in the amount of information contained within a single volume, and designed to be read as a narrative, the Encyclopedia chronicles all the essential facts of American history, from government and politics to science, thought and culture.

The Encyclopedia is divided onto four parts:

Part 1: "THE BASIC CHRONOLOGY" presents the main political and military events in the history of the United States, beginning with the era of discovery. It has been updated to reflect newly discovered facts and modern perspectives on domestic and foreign affairs.

Part 2: "THE TOPICAL CHRONOLOGY" records the nonpolitical aspects of American life and has been extensively revised to include a newly titled section "Land, Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment," as well as updated sections dealing with the American economy. A few of the topics covered in this section are the fine arts, religion, medicine, education, television and radio, immigration, population, United States expansion and Supreme Court decisions.

Part 3: "NOTABLE AMERICAN BIOGRAPHIES" contains profiles of 450 influential Americans from all walks of life and their outstanding achievements.

Part 4:"THE STRUCTURE OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT" includes tables of U.S Presidents and their cabinets, party strength in Congress from 1789, and Supreme Court justices, as well as the complete texts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

Jeffrey B. Morris, is professor of law at the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center of Touro College. Associate editor for the last two revised editions of the Encyclopedia of American History, Morris is the author of over a dozen books, including Federal Justice in the Second Circuit and To Administer Justice on Behalf of All the People: The United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, 1965-1990. He has been professor of political science at City College of the City University of New York and the University of Pennsylvania and visiting professor of law at the Brooklyn Law School. From 1976 to 1981 Morris served as the chief research associate to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger in Burger's role as head of the federal court system.

Richard B. Morris, (1904-1989) was Gouverneur Morris Professor of History at Columbia University and past president of the American Historical Association. Morris wrote more than 40 books spanning legal, labor, diplomatic, political and social history, including The Peacemakers: The Great Powers and American Independence, The Forging of the Union 1781-1789, Witnesses at the Creation, Government and Labor in Early America and Studies in The History of American Law. He lectured throughout the world, serving as Fulbright Research Professor at the Sorbonne and Distinguished Professor at the John F. Kennedy Institute of the Free University of Berlin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desk Staple
II am a professional corporate historian.I research the corporate histories of many companies.I have very few things on my desk that are permanent, of which, three are books--the Chicago Manual of Style, the newest Merriam Webster's Dictionary, and the Encyclopedia of American History (7th ed).Whether you are a professional in the history field, a history "buff" or just an amateur social scientist, this is a book that you need to own.The four sections of this book are extremely helpful when looking for grand historical events or the smallest tidbit of information. While the internet is great for finding some of these items, this book is the most comprehensive volume of American History ever put together.I highly recommend this book--it is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
As a student of American history, I have not seen a better book that gives you an overview of American history. No this encyclopedia will not go in-depth on everything you want, but is merely a general look at our nation's history. If you want an in-depth study you do need to look for a book that deals with that issue, but if you want a good general book, this is the one to get.I believe it is a must get for any student of history, especially American history. And if you just like American history as a hobby, this book is still a must get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Invaluable Information
The Encylopedia of American History is a wonderfully detailed and comprehensive reference book on almost everything to do with American history. Practically every conceivable aspect of America's history is within these pages; if you have a query concerning anything about the USA, then look no further than here. Neatly laid out in mainly chronological form, the book varies through subjects from politics, military, literature, science and many more. The biographies section contains brief biographies of over 400 influential Americans, from presidents and scientists to Stephen Spielberg. Whether you want to become a walking reference on American history, or are already familiar with the subject and require a reliable reference source, then this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Opinion
The Encyclopedia of American History by Richard B. Morris is an outstanding source of information for the student of history or the professional educator. It contains factual information for the consensus historian. It is not revisionist.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference Book
Individuals interested in purchasing an American History book for the sole purpose of quickly researching a specific historical happening need to look no further. Scarcely illustrated, this is a fully encompassing text which provides a brief description of each event. Most descriptions range in length from one-quarter to one-half of a page. For example, it required less than two-hundred words to recount the assasssination of President Kennedy. Lengthy historical events such as the Vietnam War are also discussed in a concise manner. The Vietnam War required seven pages, including the full page map, to educate the reader. Those interested in an American History book that can be enjoyably read cover to cover must look elsewhere. Brief, fragmented event depictions cause the reader's attention to quickly wane. This book is being awarded four stars for its use as an encyclopedia. ... Read more
