Excerpt: Henry Lee Lucas (August 23, 1936 March 13, 2001) was an American criminal, convicted of murder and once listed as America's most prolific serial killer; he later recanted his confessions, and flatly stated "I am not a serial killer" in a letter to researcher Patrick Poff. Lucas confessed to involvement in about 600 murders, with an average of about one murder every five days between his release from prison in mid-1975 to his arrest in mid-1983. A more widely circulated total of about 350 murders committed by Lucas is based on confessions deemed "believable" by a Texas-based Lucas Task Force, a group which was criticized by the Attorney General of Texas, Jim Mattox, and others for sloppy police work and taking part in an extended "hoax". Beyond his recantation, some of Lucas' confessions have been challenged as inaccurate by a number of critics, including law enforcement and court officials. Lucas claimed to have been initially subjected to poor treatment and coercive interrogation tactics while in police custody, and to have confessed to murders in an effort to improve his living conditions. Amnesty International reported "the belief of two former state Attorneys General that Lucas was in all likelihood innocent of the crime for which he was sentenced to death." Lucas's sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1998 by then-Governor George W. Bush. It remains the only commutation in Bush's entire history as Governor of Texas and the only successful commutation of a death sentence in Texas sin...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=779713 ... 2-0 out of 5 stars When women were stupid
I'm keeping in mind the time when this book was written (1899). Although the story is set during the Tudor reign of England, the behaviour and actions of the female characters are a reflection of what author Charles Major expected from contemporary females. Told from the point of view of a fictional Edwin, we're witness to the love affair of Charles Brandon and Henry VIII's sister, Mary Tudor. It's a surprisingly short book and really there's not much action going on. I read this novel about the same time I read "Janice Meredith", another best seller of the time. Both women were ninnies. Neither had enough brain cells to make a synapse. I've read better books set during the Tudor era and I urge you to look elsewhere if that's what you're looking for. Try Margaret George's "Autobiography of Henry VIII" for example. OTOH, if you're like me and trying to get a feel of what people were reading in other times, you may find this little work interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book on history without being a history book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I usually hate history books. It describes all the details of the characters and the time period and really made me feel like I was there, too.I have hated history ever since it wasrequired in college, but this story and the detailed characters have mademe long to understand more of the actions of the people involved and I'mnow voluntarily going to look into more books on the lives and times of themain kings involved:Henry VIII and Louis XII. I definitely recommendit! ... Read more
