Product Description
This book reveals the extraordinary story of one of the most intensely fought battles in British commercial history - the fight between "the world's favourite airline", British Airways, and its rival, Virgin Atlantic. It is the story of a bitter rivalry between two companies and two men: Richard Branson, the unorthodox entrepreneur who is arguably Britain's best-known businessman as the head of Virgin; and John King, the Thatcherite Lord, ex-Chairman of British Airways. The book charts how the rivalry turned to obsession and finally to paranoia, until BA - one of the country's biggest blue-chip companies, was forced to admit that it waged a two-year dirty tricks campaign against Branson which went dramatically wrong. Based on extensive research and the hundreds of pages of documents prepared for the libel action between BA and Virgin, this reveals how an undercover war was fought between the two airlines. It draws on Richard Branson's diary of events, beginning with the first entries he made when he became convinced that Virgin was the victim of a dirty tricks campaign; and on the testimony of a number of key players in the drama that unfolded, many of whom typify corporate Britain today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant journalism and an entertaining book
This book had me gripped - I finished it in 3 days.If you no little about the corporate world, industrial espionage, and the world of 'security consultants', this is a fantastic eye-opener.

I can vouch that at least one of the 'players' as Martyn calls them, was described down to a tee.A very accurate portrayal.

5-0 out of 5 stars No ethics, little regard for legality, kill the competition
A horrendous expose of blatent efforts to quash the competition on the part of both British Airways and American Airlines, headed by several of Britain's establishment figures, several of who "retired" shortlyafter book publication. But, as one would think only happening in fiction, one of the main players rose to the top again, and is currently the majorplayer. The most alarming aftermath is that this book was suddenly"out of print" very shortly after publication, not only in theUS, but in the UK and Europe.I was loaned a copy by an aviation colleague(who received it as a gift from a Londoner), read it and immediately triedto purchase it three years ago.Am still trying.Could it only be acoincidence that during all the political machinations by both BA and AA tojoin forces, there were no copies of this book available to the public? One of the many horrifying aspects of this book is the way one company canget into the computer system of another in order to cause havoc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of unethical business practices
Thoroughly researched account of paranoia and dirty business practices used by BA against Richard Branson and Virgin Airlines from smear and innuendo through poaching passengers in the airports to impersonating Virgin staff.Extremely unsettling expose of the British Establishment uniting with vested interests to do down the underdog led this writer to vow never to travel with BA again: one of the main plotters is now running the company.Reads like a thriller, and additional material for the paperback version detailing a campaign of vilification and vandalism against a member of the public and an unholy alliance between BA and Heathrow police force almost beggars belief-and should cast a long shadow over the close relationship between American Airlines and BA.Essential reading for everyone in business and every airline passanger.First-rate investigative journalism ... Product Description
In the past decade we reaped the benefits of unprecedented globalisation without giving it much thought. This changed when the easy flow of money around the world ceased. For the first time, globalisation turned into a phenomenon whose fortunes all of us have to understand. What is the ethical stance that the world should take on globalisation? How are lives and businesses influenced through international trade when ideas, goods and funding are adopted by other cultures? Introduced by Sir Richard Branson, "Globalisation Laid Bare" asks for much-needed illumination from world experts in the West and Asia-from former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan to Ecofeminist Dr Vandana Shiva. These fourteen experts identify the core insights that drive globalisation, and where we should look for answers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Reference Work VS Readability
I feel so rotten giving this book 2 stars, but let me explain why. There are travel writers that can describe a place so evocatively that you yearn to be there. My dog-eared Krakauer books attest to my enjoyment of this kind of reading. The authors of this book write, "The scenery was magnificent".This book is a reference work, and describes trips that are adventuresome, but not grueling. The descriptions of the trips are quite short, usually less than 5 pages. The laundry lists that follow the descriptions may be terrific for someone contemplating these trips. They point how how to get there, where to stay, what to see, and other very helpful information. I cannot verify whether their lists are accurate or not, so I can't even rate this as a reference book.If you are planning a trip to see magnificent undeveloped areas, this may be the best work you can find. If you like your travel read to be exciting, compelling, dramatic, or socially insightful, this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pack that bag and let's go!
"Riding the Hulahula to the Arctic Ocean" is a very enjoyable travel book, an excellent combination of the dreams ever travel book should bring out in us, combined with a good deal of practical advice that would make those dreams more possible.
From the coast of India, to the mountains of Peru, to the colorful lighthouses of the Magdalen Islands...complete with web addresses and phone numbers and lots of practical advice.

Whether you have your suitcase packed and ready to go....or will not likely venture far from your Strat-O-Lounger, I think you will find this book enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars New ideas for travel
I bought this book to get new ideas for future trips, although this book is very useful for armchair travelers as well as each trip is described by someone who has actually made the trip.

I did not realize this book is intended for the senior traveler (50+), but then again I would really hope that by that time that I'm that age I still could make those trips.

The trips described are slightly adventurous but some have a hint of comfort as well. Each of these trips would make for a wonderful experience and I would like to do almost each one of them.

The more challenging trips are listed in the last part of the book in the chapter of future destinations (at the moment infrastructure is lacking in those places for easy travel).

So there is something for everyone who is interested in exciting and active holidays. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars engaging, intelligent and rewarding read
Although I am not an adventure traveler, I was just entranced by the descriptive quality of this wonderful book.
It nearly felt as if I'd joined the excursions as the details offered were so accessible and entertaining. It's
almost as if I'd had a little mini vacation .The book is all about getting away and literally vacating ones' life
and after reading (actually flying)through this book , I felt that wonderful relaxed feeling one has after taking
an enjoyable and distracting vacation.
Marcia Stone Tanck, Venice California

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure travel for everyone
As someone outside the target demographic of this book, and also one who tries to avoid traveling as part of a tour group, I approached this book with a certain amount of skepticism. The book bills itself as being tailored to the "seasoned" traveler, which to my ear sounded like it was for "old farts." While it certainly would be a great book for old farts looking for travel destinations, it's also a great resource for people of any age who are looking for adventure travel, but who can also enjoy an exotic location on its own merits without the addition of a mindless adrenaline rush.

The book consists of several parts: first is the introduction where the coauthors discuss the logistics of adventure travel in the form of "What to do" and "What to bring." Don Mankin handles the first topic and Shannon Stowell handles the second. The tips contained here, e.g., "Get in shape," "Buy trip insurance," and "Bring good footwear" are not revolutionary, but certainly helpful. The specific clothing and footwear recommendations in Stowell's chapter are especially useful.

The next 26 chapters each cover a different adventure travel experience, and are grouped by continent. About half the chapters are written by Mankin, while Stowell contributes two of his own, and the rest are rounded out by other contributors recruited by the authors. It's a shame that Stowell only wrote two chapters as his writing style is very lively and seems to capture the adventure aspect of the trip very well. The form followed in each chapter is a full description of the trip including some of the hardships as well as the beauty and adventure. The end of each chapter covers four topics: "Why Go," "Special Issues and Challenges," "Variations and Options," and "Resources and Information." Within the final topic are two subtopics, "How to do it" and "Where to Stay." This gives the reader plenty of information to make a decision as to the feasibility of the trip from the standpoint of health/physical fitness, level of accommodations that can be expected, and financial burden, as most of the trips list the prices that can be expected in either 2007 or 2008 dollars. There's also contact information for tour operators and others who can help with the planning of the trip.

At the end of these 26 chapters are 26 more trips that are listed in a couple of paragraphs each. These trips were not experienced directly by any of the authors, but rather were gleaned from a survey of adventure travel tour operators who were asked to recommend tours that would be good for the, ahem,"seasoned" adventure traveler. Once again these tours are grouped by continent and all areas of the globe are covered.

The final chapter is titled "What's next in adventure travel" and covers topics such as sustainable adventure travel, and also volunteer adventure tourism, or "voluntourism." This is something that has apparently been catching on lately, and in this chapter they lay out some questions that anyone considering this approach should ask of themselves and of any tour operators with whom they might book a trip.

Overall, the book was very good, especially in the way it captured my imagination and transported me to the location being described. As someone who diligently seeks to avoid crowds, I was pleased that most of the trips also had the same goal in mind, even though they were generally within arm's reach of civilization. The diversity of the trips both in terms of subject and location provides something for everyone. My favorites were the trek to the mountain gorillas in Uganda where Katherine Braun Mankin had a couple gorillas pass by within two feet as she sat trembling with excitement, the walking safari in Zambia where Dennis Hicks and Stephanie Waxman got out of their vehicle and walked through the bush for a total immersion experience in the wilds of Africa, and the trip by coathor Stowell to the Dong village in Guizhou, China where the whole town came out to sing for them when they arrived.

This is not a book you'll want to carry with you on your travels, since it doesn't give step-by-step directions as you go, but it's definitely a book you'll want to read from cover to cover if you're planning a trip somewhere and you'd like ideas on where to go and, almost as important, how to go. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars A basic look at marketing practice
This book is a great start for people and businesses who have very little or no marketing experience at all. It covers the usual "find something you are good at" technique in differenciation.

However this book contains no ground breaking new ideas or techniques at all. Not bad, but not particularly good either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Reading But Serious Advice
The best inspiration is proven success, and that's what the case studies in "Do Something Different" provide. The idea of cherry-picking marketing examples from small, medium and large enterprises shows that what works for the goose does so for the gander, without resorting to cliches such as that, i.e. you don't need to be a big guy to apply these methods. "Do Something Different" can be read cover to cover and then periodically picked up for inspiration. Pick a story--any story. As an individual who has recently become involved in a small publishing venture, I was pleased to see that we were already doing something different and that we now have examples to do even more of that. There are many more BHAGS to be bagged ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Its always time to do something different
I own my own accounting and tax prep business. Most of the businesses in my industry are just about the same. We advertise the same, and we almost use the same language in our advertisement. I was looking for some ideas to set my business apart for my competition. This book provided some excellent ideas. It is written in a clear and organized manner.

As an entreprenuer, I don't want to waste time reading through pages and pages of theories. This book is to the point, in that it gives you exactly what other owners have done, in a cause and effect format.

It is well worth the money. I gaurantee, anyone reading this book, will come away with great ideas on how to DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Something Different
Wow, what a book - having just woken up to the limitless possibilities that I possess but that's another story - I had been searching around for reading material and ideas when I came across this book.

It was not until I got the book that I realised it was aimed at marketing people and marketing ideas - this was not want I wanted but I am very glad I read this book.

In fact I had great problems in putting it down. I was devouring the information of how companies, both large and small, have taken and solved their problems by the simple use of sharing of ideas, by accepting or saying no, and have thus expanded their company and or their product sales have increased.

I was not looking for marketing ideas, but what it has given me is ideas on how I can use some of the concepts not as marketing tools, but tools to stimulate a sense of team spirit and opportunity among the management team of the company I currently work for.

The book is currently out on loan to a friend, and what I am looking forward to now is going back and taking a more careful slower read through these examples and trying some of the exercises in more depth.

So whether you want a book to help you shift that commodity that will not sell or find an idea that could launch that new company then give this book a go.

You will not lose anything by reading this book, what you may do is copy one of the ideas or you may find that the ideas were already in your head waiting to be released! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
"Victoria's Secret" assembled a bevy of gorgeous models for their swimsuit catalog, set against an island backdrop that makes the garden of Eden seem believable. Then, when the swimsuit models had finished the job, they went along with James's request that they drop the swimsuits. This tribute to womanly beauty came from that collaboration of model, photographer, and heavenly island landscape.

As you might expect, the eight models all fit the twenty-something, slim pattern - a wide varity of body types isn't why you'll add this to your collection. Victoria's has discovered that not all beauty has anglo features, however. Jarah's Pacifican appeal and Emanuela's tawny tones widened the palette of faces and features that James could work with. Even then, he managed to infuse each model with a unique personality: Brooklyn's challenging gaze, Emanuela's elegance, Candice's easy familiarity with the wilds, or Lindsay's touch of shyness, for example. Collections exist in which the model is just a prop the photographer uses to create some vision. I far prefer the feel of these photos, where the woman herself seems to define much of how she's seen.

I also appreciate James's respect for the models he works with. These pictures make the most of each woman's individuality. He captures each curve, each line, each freckle or dusting of fuzz with the same attention to detail. And he does so without the faintest whiff of vulgarity. These are simply beautiful women sharing their beauty, with only the warm glow of sensuality native to young, healthy adults.

I had not been aware of Russell James's work before I saw this book. Now, I'll be sure to look for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars An alluring collection
I first heard of Russell James watching America's Next Top Model as one of the guest judges, that's when I found out he is the photographer for Victoria's Secret and shot for a lot of other magazines. I love this book because it showcases his non-commercial work. Whether clothed or nude, headshot or full body, he has the ability to make every person he photographs an exquisite goddess. It's a great gift to give to aspiring photographers and anyone who loves seductive imagery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Russell James: V2
Richard Branson's Necker Island is the dreamiest of settings. Especially for photographing nude models.Being a long-time James fan, I am quite delighted to have this book in my collection. His photography is so versatile, and, through black and white as well as color photography, V2 outlines this perfectly: the fusion of the natural setting with tall, thin female bodies in their natural state.

There are eightwomen posing in this book; each of them beyond gorgeous in their own way. I've decided to outline for you the photos of each model as follows:

Let's begin with my personal favorite: Miranda Kerr. With her sweetheart, baby face, the first of her photos to stand out is one of her crouched on a rock in the ocean, hair slicked back, reminiscent of a delicate sea-creature...but one who is only in fairytales, much like a mermaid. Outside of this book, we'd see her in pink lingerie in the display windows of Victoria's Secret stores. But there's something to be said about the beauty that emits from her naked body. And Mr. James offers us some daring photos of her lower back also, which, lighting-wise are nicely done (and can be considered as a surprises for his fans too).

The rest of these models are in no particular order:

Emanuela de Paula: The most striking of her set of photos here is one with a flower in her mouth. It's what I call sexual surrealism - here the flower reminds me of a certain female body part. Flowers have always been a representation of this throughout literature and art. Russell portrays the water theme here quite well in the photos of de Paula as well. And I think it's apparent he draws comparisons through his photography here that liken her to a water nymph.

Moving along, we see more of the theme of nature through the symbolic trees which serve to uphold the beautiful Candice Swanepool. What we call "Amazonian," Russell James definitely understands where these ladies belong. Candice's photos are probably the most wildout of the bunch--we get to see her nude and climbing, surrounded by leaves.

Next comes Rosie Huntington-Whitely, one of the more timid and innocent-faced models. However this innocence is fused with sexuality. Her nipples are photographed, well, in a manner by which James portrays as dainty.

With her bangs and seductive face, Lindsay Ellington splashing around naked in the water is so playful it makes you want to join her. My favorite is of her standing in the water, with a slight shadow on her back which lets you know the sun is setting as she is being photographed. I sincerely believe that James is a master of natural lighting.

Jarah Mariano, the dark-haired Hawaiian, a real Islander, can be quite suggestive in her photographs. There's one of her hand in her mouth: this is precisely where the photography takes a slight turn and becomes more pornesque.

The most Goddess-like of all of these models, easily, is Erin Heatherton. Even her last name reminds me of a forest fairy. And there she is, with a head band made out of leaves and twigs, and you think "she must speak so softly." And James's photos of her do the same.

Finally there's Brooklyn Decker, her dreamy, waif-like frame, above and underneath the water. I really like how James displays her face to us. In one her eyes are open and fierce. In the following photo, her head is tilted back and her eyes are closed, which makes it seem as though she is reaching sexual arousal.

Russell James really surprised me with this book. He opens doors with close-ups of these models tattoos...something you would never see in a VS catalogue or display case. It's as though we get to know them in a way--James's photography says "this is it, the truth."
