Product Description

Bad Jobs is an anthology of tales—both humorous and tragic—about the worst jobs people have ever held.

This collection of stories, comics, and photographs depict, in gory true-life detail, examples of bad jobs. We all shudder at the thought of our own worst jobs-waiter, cashier, parking lot attendant-but these take the cake, demonstrating just how bad bad jobs can be.

Bad Jobs is full of wry, subversive tales, comics, and assorted miscellany from the trenches of the working world. You think your job is bad? Meet:

The flyer delivery guy who sees poetry in broken glass—from a beer bottle some kids threw at him. The phone sex operator who can bring a man to orgasm while reading Ms. Magazine. A customer service rep who only hates two things about her job: the customers and everything else. A one-time stripper who performs her first- and last-mainstage routine to Aretha Franklin's R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

The sex-shop clerk who, when confronted by a deaf-mute demanding a dollar, makes sure he can read her lips mouthing, "Fuck you. Get a job!" The factory grunt who knows firsthand what really goes into "Crushed Party Ice." The fabric wholesaler whose coworker insists he never raped a woman who didn't love it. The applicant whose interviewers end up breathing real hard through their noses, until she points out that half of their interview questions are illegal. An environmental canvasser who turns up in the local paper's "Crimewatch" column-and considers turning himself in for the reward money.

By turns beautiful, surreal, hilarious, and awful, Bad Jobs will get under your skin with stories about how really awful a truly bad job can be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorite 'real-world' books...
Some of the employment horror stories are funny but several chapters were quite honestly, vulgar. This book is loaded with graphic, sexual content and strong language. When reading the chapters I felt that some of the supposed "real-life experiences" were exaggerated or even fabricated.I have heard better "on-the-job-horror-stories" from my co-workers than what I read in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Vital New Literary Form
This is a very cool collection of stories, comics, and photographs depict, in gory true-life detail, examples of bad jobs.Included is the tale of a phone sex operator who routinely brings men to orgasm while reading MsMagazine, the stripper who performs her first-and last-routine to ArethaFranklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T", and the factory worker who knowsfirsthand what goes into "Crushed Party Ice."Truth isalternately more irritating and stranger that fiction as with the story ofthe applicant whose interviewers end up breathing real hard through theirnoses, until she points out that half of their interview questions areillegal or an environmental canvasser who turns up in the local paper's"Crimewatch" column - and considers turning himself in for thereward money. By turns beautiful, surreal, hilarious, and awful, BAD JOBSbrings together a plurality to the aesthetic responses to each author's'true stories' just as some forms of badness require different remedies. The stories in this collection mix subversive laughter at absurdity withthe sadness, frustrations and failed hopes that makeup many workplaceexperience. Perhaps best of all Bad Jobs is a vital and welcomed new modelfor complaint and renewal in storytelling from the rare perspective of thebottom up. ... Read more

Excerpt: William Earl "Bootsy" Collins (born October 26, 1951, Cincinnati, Ohio) is an American funk bassist, singer, and songwriter. Rising to prominence with James Brown in the late 1960s, and with Parliament-Funkadelic in the '70s, Collins's driving bass guitar and humorous vocals established him as one of the leading names in funk. Collins is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted in 1997 with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. With his elder brother Phelps, and Kash Waddy and Philippé Wynne, Collins formed a funk band called The Pacemakers in 1968. In March 1970, after most of the members of James Brown's band quit over a pay dispute, The Pacemakers were hired as Brown's backing band and they became known as The J.B.'s. (They are often referred to as the "original" J.B.'s to distinguish them from later line-ups that went by the same name.) Although they worked for Brown for only 11 months, the original J.B.'s played on some of Brown's most intense funk recordings, including "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine", "Super Bad", "Soul Power", and "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing". It is known that the young Bootsy clashed several times with the rigid system Brown used to discipline the young band whenever he felt they stepped out of line. Excerpt: Edna Manley OM (March 1, 1900-February 2, 1987 in Bournemouth, England, is most well known as a well-known sculptor and contributor to Jamaican culture, as well as the wife of Norman Manley, founder of the Jamaican People's National Party. She is often considered the "mother of Jamaican art". She was the daughter of English cleric Harvey Swithenbank and a Jamaican woman by the name of Ellie Shearer. Her father died when Edna was nine, leaving her mother to raise nine children on her own. As the middle child, Edna Manley was highly independent and spirited. She once attended several art schools in a two-year period, although she sensed that these schools were incredibly limited in what they offered in their curriculum. Edna eventually married Manley (who was her Jamaican cousin) in 1921, and eventually moved with him from England to Jamaica in 1922. The couple had two children, Michael Manley (who was to become a union activist and the eventual prime minister, succeeding his father Norman) and Douglas Manley, a sociologist and minister in his brother's government. As a young woman, she took private art classes with the sculptor Maurice Harding. She went on to continue her art studies, namely sculpture, at the Regent Street Polytechnic as well as the St. Micheal's School of Art in London. Her move to Jamaica had a profound impact on her work. She abandoned studying zoology back in London, and her work took on a more "inspired formal elegance," according to Boxer. Manley's materials consisted mostly of native woodsshe used yacca, mahogany, Guatemalan redwoo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3552625 ... Read more

Summary

Octavia Victoria Rogers Albert was born a slave in Oglethorpe, Ga., on December 24, 1853. There are not many known facts regarding to her personal life. Five years after she was emancipated in 1865, she enrolled in Atlanta University, and studied to be a teacher. She began her career in Montezuma, Georgia, where she met her husband, A. E. P. Albert. They were married in 1874. Mr. Albert was ordained a minister in the Methodist Episcopal church in 1877, and in 1878, Octavia was converted from the African Methodist Episcopal church to her husband's faith. He baptized her in Houma, Louisiana. The Alberts had one child, Laura. They consistently offered food, shelter, instruction, or other assistance to many former slaves in need.

A. E. P. Albert and his daughter Laura published The House of Bondage in 1890, shortly after Octavia's death. It is a compilation of narratives based on Octavia's interviews with seven former slaves in Houma, Louisiana, fifteen years after slavery ended. The most prominent figure in the work is Charlotte Brooks, a former slave sold from her Virginia family to Louisiana. The six other narratives supplement Brooks's material, as do poetry and speeches. Primary subjects include the inhumane treatment endured by many slaves, the status of the freedmen during Reconstruction, and the plight of the elderly. Octavia wrote the work both to combat negative stereotypes of African Americans and to transmit slave stories to future generations. She believed in what she called a "trinity of power"—education, property, and character—as the means for African Americans to achieve the social status they deserve, and the power of her belief gives the work an evangelistic tone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make your patterns fit YOU! Similar to Lutterloh pattern system
I found my Sunburst Pattern System at a garage sale for $2.00, and it had everything, including not only the Women's Fashions, but the Children's and the Men's Supplements, which were ALL in the bright orange and blue notebook! As I began to use it, I realized it was similar to the Lutterloh System which I also have, but with the Sunburst Pattern System, I didn't have to adjust for not using shoulder pads like I did with the Lutterloh System. There was even a bonus dart moving tool that you could cut out and glue to cardboard to make it last longer.I really like the classic styles in the Sunburst system because they didn't require as much alterations or re-fitting as the Lutterloh system required, since the Lutterloh system seems to be mostly 1980s big shoulder pad kind of styles (even though I bought it around 2000).Because I purchased the Lutterloh System new, I spent over $250.00 just to get the kit with the pattern book, "the Advanced Guide to the Lutterloh Pattern System", the two Designer's Curves for making the patterns (which can be used for any pattern and fitting", their sewing book that I think is "The Essentials" (I share these with my mother who uses both pattern fitting systems, so they travel between our homes 45 minutes apart). I use both systems, but you could easily get by with just one or the other. My mom who makes ALL of her own clothing uses both systems to design her own clothes patterns and has been much happier since we started using these systems. Like me, she is 3 different sizes, and even fitting patterns was a nightmare for both of us.We learned all kinds of quick, helpful tips that have made our sewing look MUCH more professional, and saves us time too.I finally feel like I can sew for myself with confidence, as long as I keep taking new measurements when I gain or lose weight! Product Description
"The Process of Parenting" is a comprehensive introduction to parenting that describes the many ways parents and caregivers can translate their love and concern for children into effective parenting behavior. With a strong emphasis on the developmental process and on the changing nature of parent-children relationships over time, the book presents a wide range of theories and research with a focus on real-life applications. Because parents and children are distinct individuals, a problem-solving approach is emphasized that can help parents arrive at solutions that fit them, their children, and their life circumstances. Two basic tasks of parenting are emphasized as ultimate ends: creating close emotional relationships with children and supporting the development of children's full potential. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Biased
Just another sociology book about white-bashing. I have to continue to use this book until Dec. 2010 despite the fact that I hate it. Only buy this book if you have to for a class. Even though it isn't explicitly said, this author portrays whites as all being oppressors of the poor minorities. What's the real truth? There are people everywhere, of all races, that are racist, and most people are actually not racist. This book sucks, and I've been exposed to plenty of books, especially since I'm a senior at a state university, and have been taking psychology, sociology, and human development classes for four years.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent overview but some inaccuracies and biases
I've only read about half the book so far for my parenting class I'm taking. Overall it seems to be a fairly decent overview of what research and professionals are saying now, although I have spotted some inaccuracies in the book and it definitely shows some biases in certain areas. For example the book talks about the growing problem that there are more and more older people compared to younger people. Brooks says this is due to the lifespan increasing. The human lifespan is actually not increasing it remains around 120 years, it is life expectancy that is increasing not lifespan. She goes on to quote stats of life expectancy, I don't know if it was a mistake or is she doesn't know the difference between the two. Also it bothered me the way she described the 50's nuclear family as focusing on the emotional well being of all family members. This was far from the truth in many families which focused on the power of the male not on how everyone (particularly the wife and kids) was feeling. This seemed to reflect personal beliefs of the author or maybe she never really researched that particular area and just made assumptions. I'm a family development major and the "Lead it to Beaver" family was more of a myth than the norm in the 50's.

I don't really like the layout of the summaries at the end of the chapters either. They are a bit too brief and don't necessarily hit on all the main points.

Other than that it is a fairly easy read, it's organized fairly well, and has some good information and advice in it. Although I may sound like I don't like the book, it's not all that bad. It would be a mistake to "through the baby out with the bath water."
