Synopsis:
Have you ever wondered what those sparkly specks in the piece of gravel in your driveway might be? Or why some crystals grow so big? In Explore Rocks and Minerals! kids can try activities that will help them figure out the answers, from testing minerals and making crystals, to making yummy models of the earth and volcanic meringue cookies. Sidebars about people in geology, such as a kid who helped discover a new kind of dinosaur, or a geologist who proposed a theory that no one else believed for a long time, help kids see the human side of geology.

Overall thoughts:
My family is really into interactive books where we not only read, but also are able to apply what we are learning. My kids really enjoyed the different experiments. I think growing the needle-like mineral crystals was their favorite, however, with 20 experiments, games and projects to choose from . . . not only kids, but also families can have a wonderful time each weekend learning something new. You will learn about the earth right down to its core. You will learn how different types of crystals and minerals form, how volcanoes are made and why they explode. Kids will also learn about erosion and metamorphosis.

Each chapter/section covers a different topic and has a clear explanation of underlying concepts making learning fun and engaging for the whole family. Not to mention the great black and white illustrations that not only added character, but also show how and why each topic happened or how to do the activity.

You will also find a glossary at the back of the book making this a great resource for schools/teachers as well. And even though this book is recommended for ages 6 to 8, my five and fourteen year olds loved reviewing this book with me. So don't let the suggested ages fool you. Any child would have a great time reading, learning and doing the activities in this book.

Solidly scientific fun
Explore Rocks and Minerals! by Cynthia Light Brown and Nick Brown, is a straightforward introduction to geology, beginning with the planet itself, proceeding thought the various types of rock, and concluding with fossils. I particularly appreciated the discussion of the atomic underpinnings of minerals and crystals, which most geology books for kids (to the best of my knowledge) don't include:

"If you could explore the inside of a mineral and see its atoms, you would see that the atoms are held together in patterns. The pattern could be in the shape of a cube, a HEXAGON, or another shape. Geologists classify those patterns into six different groups depending on their shape. The pattern of atoms is repeated over and over again to build a crystal." (page 17)

There are many more details included, but this gives an idea of the level of the writing--straightforward, but instructive.

Hexagon, by the way, is in caps to show that it's one of the Words 2 Know, listed at the bottom of the page--handy, because words like "clastic" are challenging (even for grown-ups with a basic knowledge of geology).

The book includes twenty projects that are much more explorations than "crafts," and they bring to life the principles discussed most excellently. For instance, a metaphor of the earth is provided by a hard-boiled egg--a tactile representation of crust, mantle and core. Likewise, one can make a model of a salt crystal with gumdrops and toothpicks, basalt columns with cornstarch and water, and a sandwich with sedimentary layers. Each activity includes a "Things to Notice" section, to encourage Thought.

In short, a most excellent geology book for the young. I dunno if I'll ever get around to making basalt columns, but next time we have hard-boiled eggs, I'll certainly be bringing geology into the conversation....

Another great educational book from Nomad Press!
Although this book is intended for kids ages 6 - 9 or grades 1 - 4, my 10 year old 5th grader really liked it.I am surprised when I read through Explore Rocks and Minerals! (and the other books from Nomad Press that I have read) how much I learn!I know I had all this stuff in school myself but have forgotten many of the details over the years.We love the hands on projects like "Make Your Own Earth" and "Make Your Own Stalactites".Many projects are simple enough for the older kids to do with minimal supervision, but it's more fun to join in with the kids!The illustrations are cartoon like and fun, even for the younger kids.Overall I was very impressed with Explore Rocks and Minerals! and highly recommend it as another great addition to your child's home library.

Explore Rocks and Minerals! has 20 great projects, activities and experiments. I was happy to get this book for review it sure will come in handy for my middle daughter this year. She is in Jr. High and her school requires them to do a Science Fair project for a grade and this is going to be perfect. Another reason why I was so happy to get to review this is that she loves fossils, rocks and minerals and I thought this would be a great book for her.

My daughter and I really enjoyed this book. It was packed full of information and experiments that were simple enough to do. We went threw the entire book and there wasn't a page in it that wasn't packed full of educational information. This book is geared towards 6 - 9 aged children but my daughter who is 12 found this book very helpful for her age group as well.

Her science fair is in October this year and she picked out a project to do from this book. She is going to be doing "Make your own Stalactites" from Explore Rocks and Minerals. With these easy step by step instructions this is going to be a fun Science fair project. She will only need a few items to do this project (2 glasses or cups, Hot tap water, Epsom salts, cotton or wool string, 4 paper clips and a dish).

I defiantly think this book is worth every penny.... The educational value in this book is wonderful and this book will be enjoyed by everyone not just little kids. I sure was fascinated by everything in this book. This book got an easy 5 star rating from my household. It is a very educational and fun book to have.

A humble, enthusiastically recommended story
The Leaf that was Left is both a picturebook and a thoughtful parable for parents to share with their children. Young Louella knows the love of her family, her friends, and her pet cat, and she owns many nice toys and things; yet she can't help feeling that something is missing in her life. She doesn't know what it is. Is it possible to be very lucky, and loved, and still be missing something? While Louella is still trying to figure out the riddle, she ventures out into the snow with her parents and sees the very last leaf of the season outlined in beautiful frost. Her dad offers to pluck the last leaf and give it to her, and she considers the leaf as a gift, with the private knowledge that she would be the very last person to see it on the tree. But she realizes there is greater value and satisfaction in leaving the last leaf there, so others can appreciate its beauty. Featuring truly beautiful color paintings, The Leaf that was Left is a humble, enthusiastically recommended story especially for parents who are trying to help their children understand that there is more to life than having and collecting things, despite constant pressure from advertising in a consumption-oriented society.

Beautiful book with an important topic
Both of my young children loved this book! It is a beautiful story that helped me start the important discussion with my kids about not always needing "everything" but that sometimes your greatest joy can come from leaving things for other people to enjoy. It is a captivating story with beautiful illustrations. I highly recommend it!

Something we should all read-a real pleasure!
Beautifully written, with gorgeous illustrations, The Leaf that was Left is one of those rare childrens books that is as pleasurable for the adult reading it as for the child listening. It's a story whose message, that gratitude and appreciation can make you feel better than any "thing" ever could, stays with you long after you finish reading it, prompting wonderful and important conversations with your children.

Very Timely Subject Matter

Excellent Book
This book was recommended to me by an older friend and I am soo glad I got it!It came to me when taking life "One wave at a time" was what I needed.Written in a simple easy to read manner, the adventure keeps going and going. This man is a con artist
Bill Brown is a con man who has written a book full of lies and half truths. He has brain washed his children and taught them to lie cheat and steal. Everywhere they go they leave a pile of trash and a line of enemies. I know this first hand. If they should ever cross your path go the other way. They lived in houses with the windows boarded up and wouldn't let there children associate with any other people.
That is the sad truth.

Amazing and well-written story!
One of the best books I have ever read. The human spirit never ceases to amaze me, and the nature of that is captured in this book. I am awed.

Tremendous andHeartwarming
If you have never read a book you could not put down, you need to start reading "One Wave At A Time."This is one tremendous and heartwarming true story of one man's tragedy, saga, perseverance, survival, and the sheer will to live and provide for his close knitfamily.Each of the heart-stopping chapters would make a wonderful book. If you think you have problems, read this book and you will be thankful that your problems are just minor.I am thankful that this man put his story into print. My heart and admiration goes out to him and to his family.

The spirit of a place and time
ONE WAVE AT A TIME
Ihad the pleasure of reading this book right after it was published. I couldn't put it down once I had cracked it open! The adventures, tests and trials the Brown family survived were a testament to how powerful love and determination can be in the face of huge experiences - some wonderful and some so frightening that it seems impossible to fathom. The Browns are truly an amazing family. They are close-knit - not just out of necessity, but out of an authentic, unwavering devotion to each other.

When Billy Brown lost his parents and sister as a teenager (as if that wasn't bad enough) then to top off the horror, the Texas court system, his father's advisors and business partners failed the boy miserably, taking anything they could get their greedy hands on, he could have completely shut down, immobilized by what I can only categorize as a most justifiable anger. Instead, he embarked on the journey of a lifetime - one which I have to say I envy - even during the overwhelmingly hard stuff.

One thing I noticed throughout the entire read was the unabashed love the man has for his wife and kids.He has a right to be proud of them all. They are a force of love, purity, and innocence in a world gone mad with trivialities. Billy Brown and his beautiful family are a treasure in and of themselves. He has taken me in my dreams to the vast Alaskan wilderness and has shown me the majesty of her nature, the value of family and the capacity of the human spirit for unity, survival and continuation. My hat goes off to them and my heart goes out to them.

To Billy: You did good. Your legacy will continue through the amazing family you've shared with us and the life stories you have left with us.

In a nutshell, theirs is a story not to be missed! ... Read more
