Peter Norton's Maximizing Windows Nt Server 4
by Peter Norton is another of those hefty computer tomes that you occasionally need to look something up in.These days though, not so much, but this was obtained very cheaply and did come in handy once or twice. In general though, probably was not worth it, all told.

Product Description
Foreword by Alexandra Stoddard, author of Living a Beautiful Life: 500 Ways to Add Elegance,Order, Beauty and Joy to Every Day of Your Life.

"Often we come to a point in our lives when we dispense with the trivial and tire of ordinary superficialities," writes Peter Megargee Brown in Figure It Out: A Guide to Wisdom. Here he has collected some of the most profound statements of all time, and gathered them into topical sections reflecting the depth of the thinker behind the trial lawyer. Sprinkled with his comments on the quotations he has carefully selected over many years, sparkling anecdotes and essays complement the quotations and provide a complete and thought-provoking portrait of each subject. Brown leads you through the great subjects mankind has grappled with since the beginning-spirituality, love, life, death, friendship- and offers much more-his appraisal of the complexities of character, writing, history, memory, privacy, travel-drawing on the wisdom of great philosophers including Aristotle, Hillel, Voltaire and Hegel, Supreme Court Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes, Benjamin Cardozo and Joseph Story, the late Tony Snow, writers such as George Bernard Shaw, Ayn Rand, Maureen Dowd and Malachy McCourt, politicians Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt, painter Henri Matisse and architect Frank Lloyd Wright. A collection that can be read cover-to-cover or flipped through for a moment of illumination,

Figure It Out: A Guide to Wisdom will entertain and enlighten seekers of truth. Turn to this treasury for inspiration, as Alexandra Stoddard says in the Foreword, "Whether you are a reader, a writer, a historian, a philosopher, or a speaker at important events-even making a toast-this personal selection will delight you, uplift you, and help you to Figure It Out." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great experience.
I needed this for my class and I was worried that I wouldn't get it in time, but it got here within two days and I was really pleased with the packaging and speed.
The articles in the books are very interesting even for a personal read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine for Use
Product had more damage than anticipated but was shipped to my house in a hurry which is what I needed most!

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Reading
This is a phenomenal collection of essays, ranging from ancient agricultural techniques to the interpretation of Shakespeare in remote Africa. It provides basic, easy to read, and entirely absorbing examples of how the field of anthropology (as well as linguistics, sociology, archeology, paleontology, and more) is at work around the globe. Each reading is brief enough to engage even the most reluctant reader and no background experience is necessary to understand and enjoy them - although advanced students will not be disappointed.

Product Description
Anthropological contributions to the study of infectious disease and to the study of actual infectious disease eradication programs have rarely been collected in one volume. In the era of AIDS and the global resurgence of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, there is widespread interest and concern about the cultural, ecological and political factors that are directly related to the increased prevalence of infectious disease. In this book, the authors have assembled the growing scholarship in one volume. Chapters explore the coevolution of genes and cultural traits; the cultural construction of "disease" and how these models influence health-seeking behavior; cultural adaptive strategies to infectious disease problems; the ways in which ethnography sheds light on epidemiological patterns of infectious disease; the practical and ethical dilemmas that anthropologists face by participating in infectious disease programs; and the political ecology of infectious ... 5-0 out of 5 stars St. Peter's Fair
This fourth in the Brother Cadfael series builds the history of the Abbey and the life of Brother Cadfael.Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter) is a wonderful writer, adept at pulling you into the story and making her beloved Shropshire come to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cadfael: St. Peter's Fair
One of so many of Ellis Peters Cadfael chronicles; excellent story development and characterizations as always.
Love one, love them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair Dealing, Foul Deeds, and a Fearful Damsel
Provost Corviser leads a delegation of Shrewsbury's best men before Abbot Radolfus demanding a bigger share of the proceeds of St. Peter's Fair, an annual event sponsored by the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul. The money is needed to repair the town after the ravages of the recent seige of the town by the forces of King Stephen. Abbot Radolfus demurs, saying he's bound by the ancient charters.

Philip Corviser, the Provost's son, leads a delegation of young men to request a voluntary contribution from the merchants at the fair. There he is smitten by the beauty of a merchant's niece, and also smitten by the merchant's bludgeon. A riot ensues.

When the dust settles, young Corviser is in gaol, the merchant is in the mortuary, and the neice, Emma, is in fear--but of what? Not to worry, Ivo Cobriere, a handsome young nobleman, stands ready to aid her. Misfortune continues to stalk poor Emma and another murder occurs. Deputy Sheriff Hugh Beringar and Brother Cadfael are sure that Emma knows more than she is telling.

Philip gets out of gaol, another killing occurs, Cadfael and Hugh unravel the mystery, and the saga ends in a stirring chase and rescue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not long at the Fayre
St.Peter's fair is held annually on the section of land outside the monastery walls in Shrewsbury, but involves the monastery itself, with its guesthouses filled with the gentry and travelling merchants. When the body of wealthy merchant, Thomas of Bristol is discovered, stabbed, stripped and robbed, his niece Emma who was accompanying him, is put into the care of Aline, the wife of the deputy sheriff, Hugh Berengar. Brother Cadfael becomes the girl's protector as she moves around the town, determined to carry on her uncle's business, as he would have wished. Another merchant is murdered and Emma's belongings are searched as if the killer is looking for something in particular. The townspeople of Shrewsbury become very alarmed as this part of the country is still very much divided in its loyalties, with factions supporting King Stephen and others favouring Empress Maud. Cadfael is convinced that Emma knows more than she's admitting, but it's only when she is openly courted by a young nobleman, who would normally be considered too far above her in station, that her life is endangered. It's another fascinating story of life and death in 12th century England, with the detective monk, Cadfaek working his way methodiaclly through clues to a satisfactory solution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brother Cadfael with a chase scene!
Of the chronicles of Brother Cadfael that I have thus far read, "St. Peter's Fair" is the most "mystery-like." No cut and dried solution springs to mind as the plot unfolds. This one had me guessing for some time.

All the regular ingredients of the previous stories are here: Political wrangling, personal intrigue, a love story, and of course--a murder.

Cadfael once more is a treasure trove of wisdom. Some of his lines here are classic. Cadfael is a very noble, very humane, world-weary protagonist. Ellis Peter has truly created a detective for the ages in him.

In "St. Peter's Fair" Cadfael is up against one heck of a baffling case. He and Hugh Berengar (my favorite secondary character) team up to try and solve the murder of a visiting merchant. I have no desire to give the ending away. I will only say that "St. Peter's Fair" has the added bonus of a chase scene.

"St. Peter's Fair" is a worthy entry in this series. The more I read of Ellis Peters, the greater my respect for her becomes. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

Product Description
There remain profound misconceptions about slavery still largely accepted by American historians: ú That there was no collective resistance to the enslavement system by captured Africans ú That self-liberated Africans mostly fled northward to freedom, rather than southward to the free territories of Georgia and Florida ú That the Seminole Wars were simply another set of Indian wars, rather than wars which marked the collective African resistance to the enslavement system ú That the records of the period (official documents, newspaper records, etc.) were accurate descriptions of fact, rather than censored materials produced in wartime, with a view to enhancing public support and calming public fears. Why has scholarship since this period failed to challenge the historical records, and shed the light of contemporary political science on their interpretation? It’s a truism that history is shaped by the victors, yet it is rare to find a situation of such near-erasure from contemporary awareness. Disguised as Indian wars, the Seminole Wars were the captured Africans? anti-colonial war of liberation waged from the free territories of the South. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history regarding Resistance to Enslavement
I really like the content and conciseness of this book. It is not an in-depth volume on the subject but a comprehensive read to get a total picture of how enslaved Africans did not willing submit to the cruel and inhumane enterprise of the international slave trade. A wonderful addition to anyone's library and for those who are interested in how these atrocities were viewed by those who were oppressed.

Product Description
Opera was invented at the end of the sixteenth century in imitation of the supposed style of delivery of ancient Greek tragedy, and, since then, operas based on Greek drama have been among the most important in the repertoire. This collection of essays by leading authorities in the fields of Classics, Musicology, Dance Studies, English Literature, Modern Languages, and Theatre Studies provides an exceptionally wide-ranging and detailed overview of the relationship between the two genres. Since tragedies have played a much larger part than comedies in this branch of operatic history, the volume mostly concentrates on the tragic repertoire, but a chapter on musical versions of Aristophanes' Lysistratais included, as well as discussions of incidental music, a very important part of the musical reception of ancient drama, from Andrea Gabrieli in 1585 to Harrison Birtwistle and Judith Weir in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography and Author
Peter The Great, as he should be told.A well-written, engaging bio. that opens with the strife of the Streltzy uprising when he was a young boy.Political machinations are explained in a simple manner throughout the book, and they are never tedious.Peter is portrayed as a man with passion for his country, his people, and his own ideas.Although the text is sympathetic towards Peter as a person, it neither idolizes or villifies him for his radical accomplishments. His was a fascinating life.

THIS BOOK IS THE KIND OF BOOK THAT INTERESTS A CHILD AND SHOULD BE REPRINTED !!! Original illustrations by Louis Slobodkin are b/w stylized line drawings. They may look a little out of date to the modern reader, but could be colorized and refreshed. However, those who love children's literature love Slobodkin's drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thirty Weapons of Cross-Examinationn.
This book should be required reading for all trial advocates. It reveals, step by step, how both lawyers and non-lawyers can ask the right question and to get the answer they want. Effective inquiry, Mr Brown concludes, is a skill that can be learned to gain success in almost every line of endeavour. The key to the teaching of this art of questioning was the deep study of the various techniques employed by those professional masters who spent their lifetime developing incisive, searching questions for their law cases. As Sir Francis Bacon said, "A prudent question is one half of wisdom". Keep in mind that all questions need not be dead serious. We deserve some fun in life. Try to formulate and, if you can, write down your question. Keep it short and hone your inquiry. Leave out elliptical clauses, qualifying phrases, asides, irrelevancies, jokes and historical quotes and references. Go for the jugular. At the least, review your question two or three times in your head, including your emphasis. Cross-examination is the keenest test of truth and more penetrating than an affidavit. Emory R Buckner, a noted advocate, emphasized that preparation (or getting all the relevant facts before the start of the contest) was the trial's single most important event. Stated in its barest terms, Mr Brown's thesis is that if the witness hasn't hurt you, don't cross-examine. If you do cross-examine, have a specific objective in mind - prepare thoroughly to achieve your objective, and once you have accomplished it, sit down. Digest this book and your advocacy skills will increase dramatically.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of those little books worth reading again.
Quite a short book, but with lots of thumbnail sketches of little maneuvers in law cases. It's not as good as one might wish for ascertaining useful techniques of cross-examination, but it is a subtle book, pointing out things that might not be naturally noted when dealing with a hostile (or defensive) person. My interest in this book originated with my criminal-defense lawyer brother, but since I am a philosopher, I have to argue with hostile students everyday. Thus, I could use some useful pointers on fruitful and effective questioning. I get the feeling this is a little book that should be reviewed every once in a while as a review of effective questioning. Definitely worth the price, and an easy read too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price
Not the best book, but worth the price and worth a read. Not for the beginner.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Middling Good Mishmash of Maxims
Professor Irving Younger gave Ten Commandments for cross examination. Brown goes Younger twenty better, but I'm not sure it's an improvement. Most of his advice is sound, but he wanders astray on a few occasions. "30 Maxims" is a workmanlike effort, but not of the first orderof excellence. I'd give the book two stars if it weren't so inexpensive. Someday a modern lawyer will write abook on cross that tops the centuryold "Art of Cross Examination," by Francis Wellman, but that timehas not yet come. ... Read more

“Convincing analysis; empowering vision.”—David Suzuki, scientist and host of the CBC’s The Nature of Things

“A pioneering work in ethics and economics for the new global era raising all the hard questions that we need to think about in the coming decades, and proposing a radically new way of thinking about how the global community should function.”—Peter Singer, Ira W. DeCamp professor of bioethics, Princeton University

“Peter Brown has given us a structure that unites an economics of stewardship with a politics of trusteeship, based on an ethics of rights and corresponding duties. Highly recommended!”—Herman E. Daly, University of Maryland

In this important book Peter G. Brown seeks to chart a new future for all who share this planet. Through a series of careful arguments, he identifies three challenges ahead of us: first, to come up with an adequate account of our minimal obligations to each other, and to the rest of the natural order; second, to redefine and reshape the institutions of economics, government, and civil society to reflect these obligations; and third, to reconceptualize and redirect the relations between nations to foster these institutions and discharge these obligations. Brown also argues that we have direct moral obligations to non-humans—this he calls “respect for the commonwealth of life.”

Peter G. Brown is a professor at McGill University and director of the McGill School of Environment in Montreal. He is the author of Restoring the Public Trust: A Fresh Vision for Progressive Government in America.
