5-0 out of 5 stars The Reading-Writing Connection
In an attempt to develop a practical theory of literacy instruction, Jerry Harste and his colleagues Kathy Short and Carolyn Burke began working with teachers in first-through sixth-grade classrooms. Their aim was to create the best literacy- learning enviroment possible given what is currently known about how young children learn to read and write.

Creating Classriims For Authors: The Reading-Writing Connection is a result of the involvement. Written in response to teachers' requests for a practical reference orguide to organizing process-centered classrooms, this volume presents a curricular frame around which teachers can plan classroom activities that help students understand what reading and writing have to do with reasoning and learning. Through this cirriculum, students come to see reading and writing as composing, composing as learning, and learning as a form of authhorship.

Here, readers will find Harste, Short and Burke at their best: sharing their lesson ideas and demonstrating how teachers might set up a process-centered reading and writing classroom. -- from book's back cover ... Read more

Product Description

Few intellectual figures of the twentieth century dealt with such a vast scope of subjects as Theodor Adorno (1903-1969). His insights, therefore, lend themselves to critical overview as many have cross-disciplinary relevance, appealing to scholars from a variety of backgrounds. Adorno and the Need in Thinking examines questions dealt with in the works of Adorno, offering a glimpse at the development of his complex thought.

This collection of essays, though dealing with different topics from section to section, is unified by the idea that, at least in the English-speaking world, there are numerous facets of Adorno's work that have been hitherto neglected in terms of critical scholarship. Adorno and the Need in Thinking addresses these forgotten nuances, whether they apply to questions of politics, language, metaphysics, aesthetics, ecology, or several of these at once. Also included for the first time in English is Adorno's important early essay, "Theses on the Language of the Philosopher."

At a time when Adorno scholarship is on the rise, this collection sheds light on new areas of critical research, adding another dimension to the existing literature on this most important intellectual.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exploration of the contemporary issues that intellectual and philosopher Theodor Adorno (1903-1969) confronted
Adorno and the Need in Thinking: New Critical Essays is an exploration of the contemporary issues that intellectual and philosopher Theodor Adorno (1903-1969) confronted during the course of his work and writings. Presenting an anthology of essays written by learned contributors, Adorno and the Need in Thinking covers topics ranging from "From the Actual to the Possible: Non-identity Thinking" to "Politics beyond Speech: Communication and the Non-identical", and "On Adorno's Aesthetics of the Ugly". Also presented for the first time in English is one of Adorno's early essays, "Theses on the Language of the Philosopher". The advanced critical discourse is best suited for college or graduate-level philosophy students and practitioners, in this meticulous and thoughtful collection. "Disparaging the seductiveness of classical beauty, modern art depicts human alienation and indicts contemporary society. Yet Adorno attests that, through its autonomy and radical truth content, such art witnesses to a world that can and should be other than it is. 'Works of art, even literary ones, point to a practice from which they abstain: the creation of a just life.'" Highly recommended for philosophy and college library shelves. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Three Years Later, and This Still Ranks As The Best
I used this book while earning my Masters of Teaching in Early Childhood Education. It gives a superb presentation on how to put down the 1950s/60s style of teaching reading by using an investigative approach.

I hope that they up date it soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help When You Don't Have Manuals
I teach second grade in a school district in New Jersey. This year my state has expereinced drastic cuts thanks to our governor. In the spring I was sent to 8 days of inservices to prepare for a new Reading/Writing/Phonics programs for grades 1,2. Needless to say our schools are not recieving the materials needed. I began using this Guided Reading in the spring with the older set of guided reading books we have used forever. Guided Reading contains many lessons for all levels in ypour class. Its a great resource for taking off points when you need the spark for lessons. I highly recommend this book for all primary grade teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars guided reading ideas
I read most of this book the day it arrived. It offered some new ideas to help my students become better readers.I want to improve the comprehension skills of my students and the ideas in this book will help me do that.I really like the idea of teaching 1 mini lesson to all the class and then hitting it again in smaller guided reading groups.I will use this book to inform my instruction this year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guided Reading
I really like this book for differentiated instruction. Guided reading is a part of everyday instruction and to be able to use one text for many levels makes for a more efficient way of making and carrying out lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
The teachers at our school were looking for a book to help our third and fourth graders fall in love with reading. We had been using our basal a lot and supplementing it with trade books occasionally. We just didn't feel like we were reaching the kids.We all ordered this book and started using the lessons and really believe we are making progress. The students are excited about reading again. ... The story behind one of America's beloved landmarks told in simple language and colorful artwork.

Hundreds of French workers helped Bartholdi measure and build the statue. It was hard work! The statue was so big that it had to be built in pieces. Its finger was taller than a man!

Millions of people visit the Statue of Liberty each year. Here, in just 250 words, are answers to many of the questions that children are sure to have during those visits. The text and art were reviewed by an historian at the statue. And the board book format makes it perfect for young travelers whether armchair traveler or visitor. Ages 3-5. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poorly written
There are only a couple of pages that even reference the Bible in this book. The way the stories of Jesus are covered leave a lot to be desired. I do not imagine how any child could possibly want this book read to them again and again

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Simple Story of Jesus
This book is a great book for young children who are learning about the life of Jesus. The Pictures are great and keep the attention of the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book about Jesus for Young Children
Unfortunately, many books about Jesus are boring to my youngsters. They will often interrupt my reading to tell me they want a different book. This is one of the few Christian books that my children enjoy and request to hear multiple times. The book emphasizes Jesus' love for us, and lays out the basics of His birth, His death on the cross for our sins, and His character as revealed through His miracles and His love of children. The pictures are gentle and joyful, and emphasize family.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview for toddlers
The Story of Jesus, by Patricia A. Pingry, is designed to teach toddlers and babies the basics about Jesus Christ. In board book format, the author tells us that Jesus is God's son; he loves us; we celebrate his birthday on Christmas; we remember that "Jesus gave his life for us" on Easter; "when we pray, we ask Jesus to help us;" and that the Bible talks about Jesus and his diciples. We also learn that Jesus said "Let the little children come to me. All people should have the faith of a little child" and that he performed many miracles (including making the sick well).

Because the book is an introduction to who Jesus is, there isn't (and shouldn't be) a great deal of detail, but we do get to read an abbreviated version of how Jesus made five rolls of bread and two fish feed thousands.

What I Like: The way the author breaks down a complex subject into a manner digestable and understandable for even young toddlers. The illustrations, by Rebecca Thornburgh, show both modern-day and biblical scenes in a lively fashion.

What I Dislike: Nothing

Overall Rating: Very Good.

Age Appeal: According to the publisher, 4 - 8, but younger toddlers will find the book appealing, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Story of Jesus
It's a good little book for toddler age kids, but I had wanted something for older children, about 6 years of age with more information about Jesus' life. The problem is there is no way to tell what a book is like when viewing on line. Cannot see the inside or even how it is made. I will keep them but would like to find a book that is meant for slighly older kids. ... Read more
