Product Description
Ask anyone what Cher wore to the Oscars in 1985 and they can describe the Spiderwoman headdress, the exposed navel, and the looks on people's faces when she made her entrance. Ask about Carol Burnett's "Went with the Wind" dress, and they'll say it was a green velvet Southern Belle costume made from drapes--with the curtain rod still attached. Funny and outrageous, these are just two of the many costumes Mackie has indelibly etched into our minds. He has also dressed such celebrities as Elton John, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, and RuPaul; designed for Broadway, Las Vegas, opera, and ballet; and currently runs a couture business with licenses for fragrance, fashion accessories, eyewear, suits, furs, home furnishings, and collectible Barbie dolls.

This spectacularly bright and colorful book is as outrageous as Mackie's designs. In addition to classic photos of marvelous Mackie-clad superstars of the last three decades, glorious gatefolds and specially commissioned color photographs by Gideon Lewin illustrate Mackie's extraordinary achievements.

Unmistakably Mackie demonstrates how this seven-time Emmy Award-winning designer has reached the consciousness of the American masses and turned them on to a stylish fantasy that is purely his own.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Went, "Holy Cow, That Person Looks GREAT!"
And that thought never wavered once as I agonizingly slowly fiddled with the corners of each page to the next, completely awed and feeling like I wanted to go to New York and show off my skinky legs as well. This book is unreal.

There's flash everywhere. There's pizazz. There's an army of sequins, a rainbow of sparkles, a lifetime of gorgeous reds, beautiful greens, and dazzling blues that you would have never dreamed would have graced this earth in all of eternity. They all flash, they all sparkle, they all wink out and grab you by the eyeballs and force you to gawk and gawk at them until you feel like all your pupils have dried up and you can't possibly gawk anymore, but you just do.

The book is sort of divided into sections, but the reader (or watcher) won't pay too much attention to that except for the divisions for the Hollywood and Barbie section. You've got funky fonts that pop out at you from this unknown corner you never knew was there; you've got these curvaceous paragraphs shaped like a woman's body; and you've got so many other things that I couldn't possibly explain to you until you've bought the damn book. So buy it already.

My only complaint is that the "Hollywood", "Barbie", and his own fashion line sections are too brief. How can you possibly fit more than forty years of glory, fashion, and Bob Mackie into just over 150 pages?

It ain't nobody, but Mackie. Get it for yourself! You will never, *ever* regret that decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fashion and Fantasy of Bob Mackie
Wonderful book!Such gorgeous pictures and I loved the Bob Mackie story too.My only complaint is that it just wasn't long enough.....hoping for a sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deliriously happy at [any price!]
I bought Unmistakably Mackie after drooling over the book for nearly a year. It is beautiful, it is entertaining, it is over the top, it is history. It is also a fine education in costume design and fashion illustration.
I have other books that feature Mackie's unrivalled fashion illustrations, but here I can see and almost touch the finished costumes that made Cher and Carol and Ann-Margaret. I can finally analyze how they are made.
Please, don't wait to buy this wonderful book. and it is well worth getting a new, pristine copy of this treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unmistakably Mackie -- if you love fashion...you'll love Bob
WOW! WOW! WOW!Unmistakably Mackie is a fabulous fashion book! This is by far my favorite book! The photography is stunning. The creative type layouts are imaginative. The sketches are wonderful.Anyone interested incostume &/or fashion design will LOVE this book writen by Frank DeCaro("Style over Substance" columnist for the NY Times).

As adesigner & illustrator just starting out, I find no end of inspirationin this book! The sketches are delightful and the outfits are alwaysimmaginative.(Looking at the photos & sketches, I found out I candraw Cher too!):o)

Before reading this book on Bob Mackie, I had noidea the extent of his influence.I just knew I liked his designs. Now heis undoubtedly my favorite designer.(I want to do what he does!)Thisman has done everything...from his own ready-to-wear fashion line toBroadway, television (Cher and Carol Burnett), movies, ballet, an opera,Vegas and Barbie! If there's something he hasn't designed for, I'd besurprised.

I heartily recommend this book!

Product Description
The large-scale Broadway musical is one of America's great contributions to world theatre. Bill and Jean Eckart were stagedesigners and producers at the peak of the musical, and their designs revolutionized Broadway productions. At a time when sets were meant to remain simply backdrops that established time and place but not much else, an Eckart set became part of the performance on stage, equal at times to an actor. Anyone who has seen Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables has seen the innovations that the Eckarts brought to the large Broadway-style musical production. They were best known for their designs for Damn Yankees (1955); Once Upon aMattress (1959), in which Carol Burnett made her Broadway debut; and Mame (1966) with Angela Lansbury.

Andrew B. Harris uses production stills and the Eckarts' sketches from every show they worked on to illustrate the magic behind an Eckart design. This lavishly illustrated book, with more than 500 full-color illustrations, is a fitting tribute to both the great American theatre and the couple who helped make it great.

"Chock full of new and valuable information and which in my opinion will be an important book on the history of the American musical. I found it an excellent précis of the theatrical process and one which brilliantly shows the collaborative aspects of design."-Robert Taylor, curator of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, with an interesting tale
This is primarily a photo collection and contains many terrific pictures. I was taken by the Eckart's story especially as a historic tale about the narrow opportunities available at the time of their success on Broadway. Bill and Jean in late career, fled NY and retreated to academia, (Broadway's loss became SMU's gain), for financial reasons. Today, talents of their caliber would have David Rockwell-like opportunities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
This is a beautiful book, well documented, fabulous photographs and a must for anyone interested in theater design - or theater in general.Andrew Harris did a masterful job.

It's a Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Masters of their Art
If you're thinking about this book you might want to go to [...], the Internet Broadway Data Base and look up the Eckart's. There's a list of thirty seven plays where they did the set design. They began in 1952 with the play 'Glad Tidings,' and for about twenty years it was a very rare year that they didn't do the sets on at least one major broadway play. It could be argued that they alone changed the basic concept of sets on the Broadway Stage. Before them the curtain went down and stagehands moved the furniture around. After them the sets moved themselves, automatically it seemed, and the set became part of the performance. And then in 1965 there was 'Mame.'

This book is a profusely illustrated tribute to their work showing how their sets changed the look of Broadway forever. It doesn't cover every play, but it begins with their work in college, shows the highlights of their Broadway careers, and takes them to Dallas where they concentrated on being parents, and in teaching.

A Masterful Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing the reader to the wonderful background worlds of Hollywood and New York's Broadway
The Performing Set: The Broadway Designs Of William And Jean Eckart by Andrew B. Harris (formerly Chair of the Theatre Departments of Columbia University, Texas Christian University, and Southern Methodist University) is an eclectic and intrinsically interesting interpretation and collection of the works and influence of two outstanding visionaries and the mutual understanding the two of them shared. Introducing the reader to the wonderful background worlds of Hollywood and New York's Broadway, The Performing Set creates an interesting and informative format for all readers. The Performing Set is most especially recommended to film and theatre students, as well as to those who appreciate behind the scenes perspectives of the big screen, and aspire to creating theatrical sets of their own.

Product Description
THIS TIME TOGETHER is 100 percent Carol Burnett – funny, irreverent, and irresistible.

Carol Burnett is one of the most beloved and revered actresses and performers in America. The Carol Burnett Show was seen each week by millions of adoring fans and won twenty-five Emmys in its remarkable eleven-year run. Now, in This Time Together, Carol really lets her hair down and tells one funny or touching or memorable story after another – reading it feels like sitting down with an old friend who has wonderful tales to tell.

In engaging anecdotes, Carol discusses her remarkable friendships with stars such at Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, and Julie Andrews; the background behind famous scenes, like the moment she swept down the stairs in her curtain-rod dress in the legendary “Went With the Wind” skit; and things that would happen only to Carol – the prank with Julie Andrews that went wrong in front of the First Lady; the famous Tarzan Yell that saved her during a mugging; and the time she faked a wooden leg to get served in a famous ice cream emporium. This poignant look back allows us to cry with the actress during her sorrows, rejoice in her successes, and finally, always, to laugh.
