Very good update on reknown textbook by Burns but...
They have been doing very good job of updating ever since Burns didn't involve hinself directly in recent editions. Adding, updating the content yet maintaining the unique tone of Burns writing.

But with 14th edition, they changed the layout to two-column page layout. And I absolutley hate two-column page in any textbook or any book for that matter.

This book, while I realise its a text book, has given me great insight into the latter portion of western culture. This book provides more verifiable references then any other book of this type I've read. Quality color pictures and easily followed footnotes, provides a respectable index and is very easily understood and appreciated. ... Read more

This is the new edition of a cult classic released at a time when the industry is once more addressing the problem of defining what constitutes Scotch whisky. This is a unique insight into the Victorian scandal which raged at the end of the 19th century surrounding the adulteration of whisky in public houses throughout the UK. Returning to contemporary press reports and Hansard, Edward Burns masterfully unravels the scandal which eventually resulted in laws being passed which created safeguards for what is now known the world over as Scotch. In 1872 Scotland's spirituous reputation as a purveyor of fine Scotch whisky was shattered when it was discovered that some public house whisky contained poison. The extent of adulteration was widespread with additives such as meths, shellac gum, sulphuric acid, and boot polish all being used to pass off spirits as 'Scotch whisky'. The North British Daily Mail took up the fight against the practice when, out of 30 samples of 'whisky' taken out of public houses, only two were found to be the real thing. With some of the most prominent figures in Scottish public life joining the fray, the battle was on to clear up Scotch. Set against a worldwide background of gross food and drink adulteration that saw the poorer classes slowly poisoned by what they ingested, the results of the in-depth investigation were hardly surprising. They were, however, dismissed by those in authority as the product of a young scientist's over-imaginative mind, and as a consequence the whole sorry affair was forgotten and allowed to fade with memory. The events disclosed in this remarkable book have not re-entered the public arena since that time. Given the importance of the topic, and the furore that followed the revelations, it is rather strange that little mention of them is made in any of the whisky books currently in print. ... Read more

Fascinating gossip for Toklas and Stein fans
Here we have a nice pairing to What Is Remembered. If you happen to be a fan of Gertrude Stein memorabilia, either book will provide the reader with retrospective insight on Alice B. Toklas, Stein's lifelong companion.

Gertrude Stein died in 1946, 20 years before Alice B. Toklas met her own end -- the personal letters in this nicely illustrated volume (over 400 pages) are chiefly the ones that Alice wrote to numerous people of note subsequent to Stein's death. The earlier-period Toklas letters are not included here.

Toklas was a remarkable lady and one would be hard-pressed to unearth a friend who was more devoted to her companion. Anyone who said something negative about Stein was immediately relegated to Toklas' lengthy S***-list. Much of the correspondence here (maybe 40%) was sent to her mentor of sorts, Carl Van Vechten and his lovely wife Fania. Other letters went to people like Sir Francis Rose, Brion Gysin, and so on, often yielding unique insights on Stein's and Toklas' numerous acquaintances and friends such as Picasso, Juan Gris, Virgil Thomson, and many other people of historical significance. Documentation of the escalating feud between Toklas and the Stein family subsequent to Gertrude's death also provides great trivial fodder for the reader's consumption.

Toklas and Stein lived chiefly in Paris during the first half of the 20th Century, even though both were Americans -- they even stayed on in dangerous (and sometimes occupied) areas of France during WW I and WW II. Both ladies were controversial, especially Stein who was clearly the more famous of the two.

The reader is treated to personal insights on the books of Stein, Toklas, and of their friends and enemies, including: The Alice B.Toklas Cookbook (which includes in the First English Edition, 1954, Brion Gysin's infamous recipe for "Hashisch Fudge"!), WHEN THIS YOU SEE REMEMBER ME; GERTRUDE STEIN IN PERSON, and Gertrude Stein : Her Life and Work. The author of the latter book became a target of much venom by the blunt Toklas as did Kathrine Ann Porter, author of Ship of Fools.

I think sex is only mentioned one time in all the letters found here and, of course, that was a taboo topic for any of the select notables who were permitted into the Stein/Toklas household. Toklas also yielded up some searing opinions of certain celebrities who had, at one time or another raised her sensitive hackles. Hemingway was a favorite target even though Toklas generally liked him.

If you're planning to make either a major or minor study of Stein and/or Toklas, this book would not be a good starting point. One really needs to have read quite a lot about the friends and acquaintances of the two (even though there are footnotes about many of the people mentioned) in order to digest what Toklas is talking about in these interesting letters with any real comprehension. Perhaps this selection would represent a better springboard for Stein/Toklas study: The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, (this book was actually written by Stein.)

For fans of the two ladies, however, this book is a treasure trove of "hot gossip" and insight on Toklas' compelling personality. So, in summary, for Steinoids, I can heartily recommend this book -- I just wish that the editor (Burns) could have included the written answering letters to Toklas' voluminous correspondence!
