3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.
I was in Ethiopia in January this year, using this Dec. 2009 edition of this book.

Almost all hotel prices were higher in Ethiopia than in this book. In Gonder I wanted to sleep in the "Genetics Guesthouse", recommended by this Lonely Planet as "our pick". When the hotel owner showed me my room, I couldn't breathe for an instant because of the strong smell of urine that came out of the bathroom. In addition, the price was birr 200 instead of the 150 indicated by the LP.

This Lonely Planet edition also didn't mention that nowadays, you have ATM's in most cities that accept debit cards (like Maestro), so no need anymore to change large amounts of euros/dollars or get money the expensive way using your credit card.

Still, this Lonely Planet is much better than nothing, but it's not as accurate as the Lonely Planets I'm used to.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful guide
We have used this book extensively during our several-month visit to Ethiopia. It contains good information, which has been useful and helpful.

Some things I would love to have improved in future editions:
- maps of Addis are really hard to come by. A REALLY good map of the city of Addis, taking several pages would be extremely helpful. Sure, you could use Google Maps, but have you noticed how terrible internet connections in Ethiopia tend to be?!
- a much more extensive, cross referenced index. The index of this book really lets it down. It is not extensive enough. It might take up several more pages to improve it, with more entries, but that would make the book so much more useful!

We have done the Northern Tour, and found the information about the different places and their sites to be very interesting. Especially in places like Axum, where myth and legend are presented as fact, the LP helped to keep our feet on the ground and heads out of the clouds, and to just enjoy the stories our guide presented for what they were: entertaining stories.

The shoe minder information for Lalibela (on tipping them) was very useful. We were ready to tip our shoe minder for her helpful service - three times we tried - but she refused each time. We think that she felt she was getting the benefit from us, by being allowed to spend a couple of hours with two very cute Western kids, one of whom has extremely blonde hair!

The information on museums in Addis was also useful, though some indication of opening days and hours, and entry prices (it wasn't included for all museum listings) would have been helpful. Public holidays meant that some we visited were closed, but LP gave us no indication of that.

Overall, a great book, with excellent information. Wouldn't have come here without it.

Product Description
There is no greater authority on the saints than Fr. Alban Butler. Hisenormous research has been the standard reference on the subject for thelast two and half centuries. But this new single-volume adaptation presentsButler’s beloved work in today's language, and provides an illuminating, accessible guide to the lives and legacies of the Christian saints.

Butler’s daily readings give us a unique opportunity to engage directlywith these great figures of faith. Turning attention away from thesuperhuman, miraculous themes that are prevalent in earlier works, Butlergives us saints who are examples of Christian living and practice, whoprovide inspiration for our own lives, in every time and circumstance. AsButler writes: "They were once what we are now, travelers on earth. Theyhad the same weaknesses we have. We have difficulties; so had the saints." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, yet not quite what I needed
Butler's Lives of the Saints, the "Concise, Modernized Edition" Edited by Bernard Bangley is not a book written for those of us who have limited knowledge of the Saints in the first place. Then again, I understand the original is volumes and volumes in length.
The introduction is quite helpful. The editor, Mr. Bangley, has taken the time to explain various terms, the process of becoming a Saint, & points out that all the Saints were not "spotless" in reputation or deeds. Each Saint is listed according to the date that they Died. It is believed that this is the Saints' birthday in Heaven.
Each Saint is allowed approx.1 page worth of information. For those looking to find what miracles have been attributed to each Saint, this is not the book for you. Some minor information is given about miracles, however most of the information is about the Saints' lives, their coversion to Christianity, or the like. This is truly a good reference book to be read with other text (including The Holy Bible). One will not get all their questions answered about Saints in "Butler's Lives of the Saints", but we never get all the answers to our questions; or do we?
The reason I gave this text a 4 star rating was because I expected it to offer more on the individual Saint's their lives & I was hoping the book would direct me to other sources of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet
A brief but concise description of each one.Nothing held back and nothing embellished, yet a comprehensive look at the saints of the Catholic Church.

5-0 out of 5 stars a Saint for every day
I am an avid reader and faithful Christian.....this book gives me inspiration, very truthful and to the point....I realize that even a saint has faults....

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
The author gives interesting details about many of the lives, but too many are covered as merely legendary. What are the the legends? As long as a day is reserved, the story could be interesting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior - by far - of all the modern 'concise' editions
One needs to first remember that the original Butler's Lives of the Saints has been frequently edited and revised, beginning with Thurston and Attwater. Since that edition, there have been numerous attempts at updating and revising based(especially)on the new Roman Calendar of 1969.

For more learned opinions and observations, please search out and read the other reviews of the series and other editions made by readers.

That being said, I do believe that this edition by Bernard Bangley is a particularly fine attempt at balancing the lives, stories and examples of the saints, when compared with so many of the other concise editions.

Bangley states in the Introduction:

"To make the collection under these covers as broad as possible, preference is often given to women, laity, recent candidates for sainthood, country of origin, and above all, spiritual relevance for today. Rather than overly repeating familiar themes, I have given special attention to the distinctive aspects of interesting individuals. Many saints are not included. The Church has never assumed that even its extensive list is complete. Moreover, only God knows many saints." (ix-x)

Its best feature, however, is Bangley's very careful attempt to avoid imposing his own opinions, perspectives, editorials and agendas. He states the facts and history, within the context of the times and circumstances of the individual saint/blessed. This cannot be said of some of the other editors and versions currently(or have been previously) published.

Finally, from the back cover page:

"Butler's daily readings give us a unique opportunity to engage directly with these great figures of faith. Turning attention away from the superhuman, miraculous themes that are prevalent in earlier works, Butler gives us saints who are examples of Christian living and practice, who provide inspiritation for our own lives, in every time and circumstance. As Butler writes: '"They were once what we are now, travelers on earth. They had the same weaknesses we have. We have difficulties; so had the saints."'"

If one wants the fantastic, 'golden legend' glorious stories of the miracles of the saints, then the original Butler's would be a great resource - and indeed, those are an integral part of our Christian story-telling heritage.

On the other hand, the saints are also real flesh-and-blood people like each of us. They are teachers of life and faith, and we can study their struggles, their examples, their responses.

This is one version I highly recommend. ... Read more

Product Description
1922. This work represents neglected chapters in the history of religion. The title, Western Mysticism, means the native mysticism of the West that prevailed in Western Europe during the six centuries from St. Benedict to St. Bernard, and has characteristics of its own, marking it off from later kinds, and still rendering it peculiarly appropriate for Westerns. Special attention is directed to the section on St. Gregory in Part II, being his teaching on the contemplative and active lives. It contains a body of doctrine at once elevated, sane, and practical, that must, it is believed, prove most helpful to the pastoral clergy and to all priest for the regulating of their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of classics
You'll simply love this book if you love God, prayer, and the great teachings of the Christian faith.Cuthbert writes well and this big print makes it easy to read and difficult to put down.Augustine, Gregory and Bernard come alive as Cuthbert explores their similar teachings about prayer and contemplation.Your own faith will deepen as you begin to practice what they teach, a teaching that is both common in the West and East of the Christian faith, though Protestants often ignore it with their emphasis upon Bible knowledge and action rather than prayer. ... Product Description
In today’s world of managed care—characterized by limited mental health resources, emphasis on accountability, concerns of third-party payers, and consumer need—the demand for mental health professionals to use briefer therapeutic approaches is on the rise. Fully 84% of all clinicians are doing some form of planned brief therapy (6–20 sessions per year per patient).

Yet despite clinical advances and outcome data that demonstrate the effectiveness of short-term therapy, many therapists—in fact, 90% of those whose theoretical orientation is psychodynamic rather than cognitive-behavioral—are reluctant to learn briefer interventions, seeing value only in long-term, depth-oriented work. The second edition of this Concise Guide is intended to help educate both beginning and experienced clinicians in the strategies and techniques of time-attentive models and to foster more positive and optimistic attitudes toward using these important therapies.

  • The seven therapeutic models presented here—including an entirely new chapter on time-limited group therapy—highlight the importance of the interpersonal perspective.

  • The seven models, one per chapter, represent well-established short-term approaches to clinical issues that therapists commonly encounter in their clinical practices. These models also have clearly defined intervention techniques and formulation strategies and can be used within the 10- to 20-session time frame of most managed care settings.

  • The first part of each chapter dealing with a therapeutic model lists the various presenting problems the authors deem most suitable for treatment by that particular approach. The authors discuss the overall framework of each model, selection criteria, goals, therapeutic tasks and strategies, empirical support, and relevance for managed care, with clinical cases to illustrate the application of each model.

The authors include updated chapters on supportive, time-limited, and interpersonal therapies; time-limited dynamic psychotherapy; short-term dynamic therapy for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder; brief dynamic therapy for patients with substance abuse disorders; an entirely new chapter on time-limited group therapy; and a final chapter on the reciprocal relationship between pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

Meant to complement the more detailed information found in lengthier psychiatric texts, this Concise Guide (it is designed to fit into a jacket or lab coat pocket) is a practical and convenient reference for psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, and medical students working in a variety of treatment settings, such as inpatient psychiatry units, outpatient clinics, consultation-liaison services, and private offices. ...
