1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing book
This is a very disappointing book. The countries are not really covered. One cannot have an overview of Africa by reading this book.Too many pages are unnecessarily spent on the standard features like visas, places to stay in the capitals, dangers, etc. Furthermore, mostly big towns are covered. There are no references to the indigenous cultures of each country,no indication of the comparative merits of each place within each country, and, above all,no comparison of the various countries--so one cannot decide which are the best countries to visit. Finally, most countries are presented in a positive light,as if each writer set out to compete with the rest, which does not help at all.Books of this sort, that cover many countries, must help the reader decide which countries are worth visiting and which are not, something that this book utterly fails to do--an excellent example of a book that succeeds in this, but from another part of the world,is Moon's "South Pacific".

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
So out of date!!Several countries do not seem to have any presence on the ground. The email sources don't go anywhere, and Lonely Planet's web site has no further info.Much of the how-to comes from the U.S. State Department's web site.

4-0 out of 5 stars Going to Africa - get this book
Lonely Planet Africa on a Shoestring

If you're going to several countries in Africa then get this book. very helpful and useful, though much was out-of-date when i arrived at certain locations - but is it possible to have a book on 52? countries and keep it up to date?

Helpful maps and recommendations, places to stay, eat etc. though all you have got to do is open your eyes and ask the lcoals and they fill you in.

Helpful general guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb !
Very good mix of general information about the continent and the individual countries (with surprise, I learned some things I didn't know about Africa) and practical travel advice, specific to individual countries, all in no-nonsense, simple, easily understandable language, and all this from the perspective of a young, budget-conscious (not the Fodor-type) traveler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Africe! Here I come!
I traveled S.A. for almost a year, using LP guidebook to S.A. And, I got used to the way that the authors would give recommendations for hostals, etc. and their maps that correllated to the restaurants, hostals, etc.And the Africa book did not let me down; it is arranged the same way as the S.A. book is.And I love the fact that some of their books are available as a download. The L.P. books are big, (and they need to be for these big countries), but after lugging the S.A. book around, I was happy to see another choice. ... Excerpt: Louis Daniel Armstrong (August 4, 1901 July 6, 1971) nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" cornet and trumpet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence on jazz, shifting the music's focus from collective improvisation to solo performers. With his distinctive gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also greatly skilled at scat singing, or vocalizing using syllables instead of actual lyrics. Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and deep, instantly recognizable voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong's influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general. Armstrong often stated in public interviews that he was born on July 4, 1900, a date that has been noted in many biographies. Although he died in 1971, it was not until the mid-1980s that his true birth date of August 4, 1901 was discovered through the examination of baptismal records. Armstrong was born into a very poor family in New Orleans, Louisiana, the grandson of slaves. He spent his youth in poverty, in a rough neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans, known as Back of Town, as his father, William Armstrong (18811922), abandoned the family when Louis was an infant and took up with another woman. Excerpt: Dom Bernard Orchard OSB MA (born 3 May 1910, died aged 96 on 28 November 2006) was an English Catholic Benedictine monk, headmaster and biblical scholar. John Archibald Henslowe Orchard, the son of a farmer, was born in Bromley, Kent. He was educated at Ealing Priory School (to which he would in later life return as headmaster), and on leaving in 1927 became its first pupil since foundation in 1902 to go to university, winning a place at Fitzwilliam House, in the University of Cambridge, where he read History and Economics. At Ealing Priory he shared classes with Reginald C. Fuller with whom he would in later life collaborate on scholarly projects. After graduating Orchard taught initially at a preparatory school before in 1932 taking the monastic habit at Downside Abbey, adopting the name Bernard; he was subsequently ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1939. At Downside he both taught at the school, took the role of choirmaster and began his career as a biblical scholar under the tutelage of Abbots John Chapman and Christopher Butler. From 1943 he took advantage of Divino Afflante Spiritu, the papal encyclical of Pope Pius XII, which for the first time permitted modern methods of biblical criticism to be employed by Catholics, to embark upon a Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, eventually published in 1951. After 13 years at Downside its then Abbot, Sigebert Trafford, instructed Orchard to take on the headship of Ealing Priory School. The school, which had been established in 1902 as a dependency of Downside, was by 1945 in a state in which closure rather than growth seemed the more likely prospect. Orchard, however, threw himself into the task of revitalising the school, which he renamed St Benedict's School, and b... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16200367 ... Read more
