Product Description

With a real-world genre orientation, attention to diverse media, focus on visual literacy, and emphasis on the ethics of writing, the third edition of The Call to Write continues to break new ground.

Organized by genres–letters, memoirs, public documents, profiles, reports, commentaries, proposals, and reviews, this innovative rhetoric gives students the practice they need to write both in college and in the public sphere. Connecting writing to the real worlds of everyday life, college, and work, it gives students reasons to write and the skills to help them succeed. A strong emphasis on public writing promotes civic involvement through writing—to inform the public, to shape opinion, to advocate change, etc.–while relevant, provocative readings underscore when and why citizens are called to write. The Third Edition retains the best features of the second edition while greatly expanding the coverage of research. This hardcover version includes a grammar handbook.

Individuals who want to master various forms of writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A really good deal
I needed this book for a composition class, which required the fifth edition. I found this, the third edition, for five dollars, and bought it. I thought that if I couldn't use it, I could sell it to someone for more than what I paid. It turns out that very little has changed from the third to the fifth editions, and this is almost word-for-word what I need. I ended up spending five dollars on a book that cost everyone else 80 dollars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Writing Textbook That Emphasizes the Revision Process
I used THE CALL TO WRITE as supplementary material for an upper-class high school writing class. The book is aimed at helping students learn "real world" writing: letters, memos, memoirs, public documents, profiles, reports, commentaries, proposals, reviews, etc.The book provides examples of the different types of writing being discussed along with lots of useful information about what makes a piece of writing in a particular "genre" good.

THE CALL TO WRITE is not intended to be a book that is read for fun. It's a writing textbook for "real life" writing. As far as writing textbooks like this go, there's not a whole lot that stands out to separate it from other writing textbooks other than the illustrations and the emphasis on revision. To break up some of the more monotonous parts of the book, the book includes a variety of pictures and illustrations, such as old-time photographs or the covers of unusual magazines and comics, that enliven the text.

When I was teaching writing, I had a difficult time getting across to students the importance of revision.Good writers revise their writing. Some have to write it out constantly, others do it through visuals, some are able to do it in their minds while talking aloud. However they do it, good writers revise constantly.THE CALL TO WRITE does a good job of emphasizing, in a way students should be able to comprehend, how important revising is.

The textbook is geared towards entry level writing classes, but can also be used as a supplement for upper-class high school writing classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a Book...
...About writing.

The copy I received didn't look like the one pictured. It has a plain cover, and some pages look like they're photocopied. I'm okay with that though, because everyone in my classes says it looks like the "indie version". So that's cool. It's got everything I need for class, and I'm happy with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Answering TheCall To Write
We are a freshmen English class in college who are using this book in our English 101 class. We haven't finished using the book yet, but so far it has been helpful in writing specific papers such as memoirs, profiles, and reviews. It gives examples of each of the genres of papers and then further gives specific information of what makes a good paper in that genre. It also suggests ways to go about writing one of these types of genres. One of the main focuses is on the revision process which is helpful because many people have trouble revising papers. The tone is easy to understand. We like that it is geared towards real world writing but we would have liked to see more creative writing tools such as poetry, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. We also would like to see broader examples like student essays that are easier for us to relate to. Overall, we think it's good for use in a classroom with a teacher but it would be difficult to learn from alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd edition hardcover review
I have always loved CoC and always will.
I think that this little gem is what the later editions tried for and some missed.
the art was great the organization good, and it truly is a complete rpg.
It just has the look and feel of a quality rpg.
You can take this book and run a campaign right out the gate (we did every saturday for a year).
So if you want a great nostalgia rpg that is complete, come here and enjoy the adventure,
for as long as your sanity holds out.
Ps
Also as a hardcover this is a version that I want on a shelf next to all my
Lovecraftian goodness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic version of the Great Game
This book was originally published by Games Workshop and represents great value (if you don't get silly and pay what some are asking for it). It is the version I played most in my 29 years of running the game.

The covers are glossy, heavy card with the artwork originally used for the 3rd ed boxed set. The binding will withstand years of game use. I speak from experience here. Mine got reasonably hard use for a decade and is still in great condition.

Inside there are sections for the Player Book, which details character generation, skills and the small number of rules that to be honest I never asked players to learn. BRP is a very simple system to run for a GM (aka "Keeper" in Call of Cthulhu), The Keeper Book which has all the secret stuff in it like the bestiary and madnesses players will eventually suffer if they continue on their quest for Mythos knowledge, and the Sourcebook for the 1920s, a grab bag of facts that is more fun than indispensable.

There is also bound in a copy of the Cthulhu Companion, which gives you an additional six scenarios, including one for a Keeper and a single player (a very rare beast indeed).

Six color plates are bound into the middle of the book, all on glossy paper. Very nice they are too.

The game as represented in this version of the rules is very, very easy for a would-be Keeper to learn and I recommend it as a beginning GM's introduction on Gothic Horror gaming above any of the others. Earlier versions are too expensive and incomplete, later ones are not bound to this degree of hardiness.

The rules have changed in detail since this edition was in print. The major differences boil down to "Orate" and "Debate" being combined as "Persuade", and the skill point allocation multiplier having 5 added to it in each case.

But this edition of the game is playable, very much so, as it stands.
