5-0 out of 5 stars Young Artist at Work...
Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, justly famous for "Anne of Green Gables", published over 500 short stories in her literary lifetime. Dodo Press has captured these short stories in chronological order in a six volume set, of which "Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1896 to 1901" is the first installment.

The twenty stories reprinted here are in the standard magazine short story format of the era.Characters and a point of dramatic tension are quickly introduced and the drama as quickly resolved, normally with a happy ending. However, L.M. Montgomery's talent as a writer is already evident in these early stories, which are populated with interesting characters, set in lushly described physical settings in Canada, and which often feature unique or unexpected plot twists.

The stories are by turns funny, whimsical, romantic, and even chilling. This reviewer especially enjoyed "The Red Room", an unexpected murder mystery, and "The Way of Winning Anne", in which a persistent bachelor finds a way to overcome the reluctance of the woman he has courted for some years.

"Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1896 to 1901" is very highly recommended to her fans, whc will enjoy watching a young artist at work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharpening Her Craft...
Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, justly famous for "Anne of Green Gables", published over 500 short stories in her literary lifetime.Dodo Press has captured these short stories in chronological order in a six volume set, of which "Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1902 to 1903" is the second installment.

The twenty-two stories reprinted here are in the standard magazine short story format of the era, but L.M. Montgomery's increasing skill and confidence as a writer are visible in her variations on familiar themes, such as romances, Christmas feel-good stories, family disputes, and the odd tragedy. Her characters engage the reader, while her plot twists make for interesting journeys. At least two short stories contain elements that would appear in reworked fashion in the "Anne" series of books. The stories feature the gentle wisdom and humor that were L.M. Montgomery's trademark as a writer.

This reviewer especially enjoyed "The Running Away of Chester", in which a teenage runaway's search for his fortune cleverly wraps back on itself, and "The Unhappiness of Miss Farquahar", in which a jilted young lady finds that life goes on, afterall.

"Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1902 to 1903" is very highly recommended to her fans, who will enjoy watching her growth as a young writer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.
I admit that it was my own fault for trying to find a cheaper version of a book I really wanted to read. The book looks just like the picture shows, but what you can't see is that the size is that of standard computer paper; it looks exactly as if it was bound at Staples. The type on the inside is in Courier--the old typewriter font!--and is very difficult to read. I feel as if I was reading an essay, not a book. Everything seemed very thrown together and unprofessional. Spend a few extra dollars on the older version.
(Because the text is wonderful, as all Montgomery works!) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!
I have been an L.M. Montgomery fan since I was 10 years old. Now, as an adult, I think I appreciate her even more.Though the Anne books will always be my favorite, I had to read this simply for knowing it was the author's own favorite.

Despite some reviews calling this book condescending, unlikely, or overly sweet, I saw it almost as a reflection of my own childhood amongst my own group of siblings and friends - only set 100 years earlier. You must keep in mind these are stories written for children and no doubt meant to be a role model for them to be happy to do what is right.

What Montgomery never fails to do is create characters.Like Anne Shirley, she creates characters that become real to her readers, that makes us happy to know them in literature and sort of wistful not to know them in reality. The Story Girl creates a group of characters that play off of one another and that grow more likeable in the reader's eye with every turn of the page.I appreciate rather than resent the continual reminder that while The Story Girl is not beautiful, she is captivating - it gives the average girl something to aspire to.

The stories that The Story Girl tells are humorous and clever, and while written for children, Montgomery always manages to throw in some humor that an adult can appreciate and enjoy.I couldn't put this book down and will likely read it again and again in years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books
Listen. Those of you who were calling it infantile when it refers to the children. Have you ever read Dickens? Now THAT makes me cringe, some of the things they say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real life, but sweeter
Like most Lucy Maud Montgomery stories, The Story Girl is about what life is really like, only slightly sweeter and more magical. She captures childhood in all of its intricacies and makes the reader care for the characters like they're her own childhood friends. You may not close this book having learned anything new about life or having developed any new ideas, but you will close it having made new memories that will feel as dear as your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely...just lovely
LM Montgomery said herself that this was her most favorite book of all her works, and i just have to agree. although this is not my favorite land setting, the story just flows smoothly and naturally; flawless. the story girl will enchant everyone, her witty mind and bewitching voice, she is a wonderful story teller. everyday is an adventure for the children: Beverly (the one is telling the story), Felix, Cecily, Felicity, Sara Ray and the Story Girl; always learning something new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book was probably written for young people. But Montgomery has an excelent knack of describing children's life on a farm in the late 1800's and putting it into a very interesting novel. I would suggest Montgomery's books as a must read ... Read more
