4-0 out of 5 stars Teen age girls will love K.C.
Thank you for allowing me to read your new books, about K. C. Flanagan, girl detective.  As a teacher I found them very interesting.  I think thatteen age girls will be able to relate to K. C. who is 14 years old.  Ilearned from these books about Mayan and other cultures in Mexico.Theycan easily replace the Nancy Drew books which I and my friend read asteen-agers. I commend you on putting out a book which the modern teen-agegirl can relate to. Product Description
Jewish women of all ages and backgrounds come together in Celebrating the Lives of Jewish Women to explore and rejoice in what they have in common--their heritage. They reveal in striking personal stories how their Jewishness has shaped their identities and informed their experiences in innumerable, meaningful ways. Survivors, witnesses, defenders, innovators, and healers, these women question, celebrate, and transmit Jewish and feminist values in hopes that they might bridge the differences among Jewish women. They invite both Jewish and non-Jewish readers to share in their discussions and stories that convey and celebrate the multiplicity of Jewish backgrounds, attitudes, and issues.

In Celebrating the Lives of Jewish Women, you will read about cultural, religious, and gender choices, conversion to Judaism, family patterns, Jewish immigrant experiences, the complexities of Jewish secular identities, antisemitism, sexism, and domestic violence in the Jewish community. As the pages unfold in this wonderful book of personal odysseys, the colorful patterns of Jewish women’s lives are laid before you. You will find much cause for rejoicing, as the authors weave together their compelling and unique stories about:

  • midlife Bat mitzvah preparations
  • the transmission of Jewish values by Sephardi and Ashkenazi grandmothers
  • traditional Sephardi customs
  • the sorrow and healing involved in coping with the Holocaust
  • a lesbian’s fascination with Kafka
  • the external and internal obstacles Jewish women encounter in their efforts to study Jewish topics and participate in Jewish ritual
  • becoming a Reconstructionist rabbi
  • the difficulties and benefits of being the teenaged daughter of a rabbi
A harmonious chorus of individual voices, Celebrating the Lives of Jewish Women will delight and inspire Jewish and non-Jewish readers alike. It reminds each of us how diverse and distinctive Jewish women’s lives are, as well as how united they can be under the wonderful fold of Judaism. This book will be of great interest to all women, as well as to rabbis, Jewish community leaders and professionals, mental health workers, and those in Jewish studies, women’s studies, and multicultural studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful overview of the diversity of Jewish women today
Many books have been now published on this relatively new subject: women in Judaism, women groping to find their place within Judaism, and howJudaism has influenced the lives of women. This book offers an honest andprivate look into thirty women's experiences with Judaism. I especiallyappreciated the diversity of the women chosen, and therefore the diversityof the themes explored. Many essays offered surprising moments ofidentification with the feelings described by women whose destiny is sodifferent from mine; this is perhaps an indicator of this enterprise'ssuccess. Product Description
A cultural milestone.

Canada is home to immigrants from every nation in the world. Quilting artist Esther Bryan wanted to celebrate this fact, to promote a sense of greater belonging among these diverse groups. A quilt would be a collaborative, community-based project to celebrate cultural diversity.

Each cultural group contributed one 11-inch square pieced into a giant quilt named the Quilt of Belonging. The quilt is approximately 120 feet long by 10 feet high (36 m by 3.5 m). It consists of 263 squares representing 71 Aboriginal groups and 192 immigrant nationalities found in Canada.

The quilt includes fabric that has been appliqued, beaded, cross-stitched, embroidered, and hand-woven. The many cultural decorations include:- Abalone shells- Lithuanian amber- Bobbin lace- A brooch from Poland- English wool- Kente cloth from Ghana- Porcupine quills, rabbit fur, sealskin, and smoked caribou hide- 200-year-old German linen- Worry dolls from Guatemala.

The Quilt of Belonging will be exhibited in spring 2005 with an opening show at Canada's Museum of Civilization and then will become part of a traveling exhibit of stitches and stories that visits museums and community centers throughout Canada and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Quilt Project is Testimony to the Power of Having a Deam
This book is a testament to the importance of textiles and the power of dreams. In 1994, Esther Bryan (who is not a quilter) went to Slovakia with her father who was returning to the village where he grew up for the first time since WWII.This trip profoundly affected her art, and she created an exhibition entitled "Return" made up of the stories and of the textiles that she and her father were given while they were there. The response to her exhibit by other immigrant families led her to realize the universal nature of her family's story, and she conceived of the Quilt of Belonging as a way to express her concept that every person is "an equally valued part of the tapestry of life."I had the privilege of seeing this 10 foot tall by 120 foot long quilt at the International Quilt Festival in Houston last year, and it was both incredibly beautiful and incredibly moving.Containing 263 squares representing 71 aboriginal groups and the 192 nations of the world, this quilt contains an incredible parade of textile gifts. The book describes the story of the making of the Quilt of Belonging, completely through volunteer efforts, and then devotes a page to each of the squares, telling the story of the maker of each one and the symbolism of the textile techniques that were used to represent that nation's people. It is an amazing project.Sales of the book support the travels of the Quilt so that more people can experience it in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilt of Belonging: The Invitation Project
I saw this actual quilt at the Houston Internation Quilt Show. When you see it you can't possibly read all the stuff on each peace, so I was really glad to find out that I could purchase this book through Amazon. It was also less costly and I did not have to carry it back all the way from Houston.I also bought this book for my mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart touching beauty
I had the joy of seeing this 120-foot long quilt in Houston last week and I got to meet and speak with the artist/author. I bought the book. The book is wonderful. The story of how this project began and the many amazing things that happened along the way will touch your heart. The idea that we all come from some place and that place is deserving of honor is expressed in quiet dignity within each block of the quilt. In the book you see the faces of the people who created the quilt. Just Wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars with perseverance, botched work becomes thesis
The thesis that gave birth to this book is so bad, that the only way she obtained her PhD was by political pressure and people being tired of the problem.

No less than 21 key references from her work can not be found in the books and articles she quotes. 44 references contain irregularities; 23 of them contain 31 text modifications with respect to the original text quoted, such as additions, amputations and other forms of alterations. Often these modifications change the meaning of the original text quoted.

Plainly said, it is a miracle that her work was ever granted a PhD, and there is no surprise if no one dares to employ her in academia. Clearly, when you write a book with a "fact and history manipulation" agenda in mind, people ans scholars see this and realise your poor ethics and jugement skills. That is what happened to Esther Delisle.

If you read this work, your have a very high risk of having a false view of Anti-Semitism and Extremist in Quebec and thinking it can be associated with Nationalism in that province.

Dont loose a penny on this looser. ... Read more
