5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark Work on Vaseline Glass
There's something about books on vaseline glass the distinguishes them even amongglass collectors, who tend in general to be an enthusiastic crowd - writers on vaseline glass have a passionate and exuberant dedication to their specialty. And who can blame them? What they write about is not merely beautiful and of historical interest - it GLOWS as well."Vaseline glass," known as "canary glass" in the Victorian era, is the yellow-green glass that contains uranium and thus fluoresces bright green under ultraviolet light.

David A. Peterson stands out even in the vaseline-glass collecting crowd. His book, VASELINE GLASS:CANARY TO CONTEMPORARY is the very best of a distinguished list of books on vaseline glass. His research is painstakingly thorough, his range is broad, and the photography featured in his book is outstanding and includes pictures of more than 1400 pieces. His love of what he writes about is also evident on every page.

To write this book, Peterson assembled short histories of a long list of glassworks - each short history is dense with information, much of it available nowhere else. For glass enthusiasts out there, I'll list the companies covered:Adams, Albany (Model Flint), A.J. Beatty, Beaumont, Belmont, Boston & Sandwich, Bryce, Cambridge, Canton, Central, Challinor, Cooperative, Crystal, Geo Davidson, Dugan, Geo Duncan, Duncan & Miller, Fenton, Fostoria, Gibson, Gillinder, Greentown (Indiana) Heisey, Hobbs, Imperial, Jefferson, McKee, Mosser, Northwood, Pairpont, Richards & Hartley, Riverside, Summit, West Virginia and L.G. Wright.

Peterson's short histories are so engaging and well-researchedthat even when I'm seeking to identify or learn about a piece that is not vaseline glass, I often turn to this book first to learn about its manufacturer. In addition to providing succinct histories of various manufacturers and the kinds of glass they issued, VASELINE GLASS:CANARY TO CONTEMPORARY often surprises me by furnishing information on obscure patterns and shapes unlisted in other resources. The book is also an excellent resource for hard-to-find dates of manufacture for specific patterns and pieces issued by companies as old as Fenton or as new-fangled as L. G. Wright.

I highly recommend this book to every American collector of glass - whether your interest is vaseline, carnival, opalescent, EAPG, cut glass or contemporary glassware.VASELINE GLASS:CANARY TO CONTEMPORARY is one of the landmark works of popular literature on American glass, a book no glass collector should be without.

[This book was published by the Glass Press, Inc., 2002:224 pages, paperback, large format, with an excellent index and bibliography; 1441 color photographs.]

Product Description
David Exley started his life in the heart of the London Docks area as “the other one”, the unnamed and unexpected twin to his brother Robert.
From Wapping to Canary Wharf is a frank, poignant yet often hilarious, record of how his life and indeed the London Docks area changed over the first 6 decades of his life. A life that could have ended so tragically after the first 8 years.
This journey of an East London lifetime details the twists, turns, the traumas and the happiness of his life from 1952-2009.
A life, still lived in East London, amongst the shiny new towers of Canary Wharf that must seem a million miles away from it’s humble, anonymous beginning in Docklands Wapping. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hats off!! A life story that also gives a great insight into Wapping and London as it once was.
An impressive and heart felt life story. David gives an open, frank and honest account of how he built his life from the shadow of the dying docklands to the modern and imposing business machine of Canary Wharf. It's amazing how much he's packed into his life - you always get a sense that nothing is being held back - he's giving you all the detail, regardless of how grim and gritty it could get. What's most interesting is the insight David gives you into life in the docklands around the sixties and seventies - it's only a heart beat ago but isn't it amazing how much things have changed.

It'll make you realise that anyone can achieve what they're after if they have the commitment, enthusiasm, energy and the gift of the gab!

Also, nothing can prepare you for the last chapter! ... Read more
