Product Description
One of the best-loved stars of classic American cinema tells all in this wry, funny, and poignant memoir

Leslie Caron is one of the most cherished and admired international film stars of our time. She made her film debut with Gene Kelly in the classic MGM musical An American in Paris, created one of the most enduring roles in American musicals as Gigi, danced with Fred Astaire in Daddy Long Legs, and starred with Cary Grant in Father Goose.

In Thank Heaven (an homage to "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," the song Maurice Chevalier sings about her in Gigi) Caron shares her remarkable life story. From her childhood with her American mother and French father in occupied France to her early success as a young ballerina; to her meeting Gene Kelly and her years in Hollywood; to her love affairs (including a very funny and very public one with Warren Beatty) and motherhood; to her alcoholism and depression; and finally her recovery and continuing success in film and television, Caron offers an illuminating account of her career.

Thank Heaven is filled with reminiscences of MGM at the end of its Golden Era, of the great stars with whom Caron worked, and of her own struggles as an actress. This is a sharp, unsentimental, and moving memoir for everyone who loves classic American movies. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book But Lacking in Some Areas
Caron has selective memory when it comes to her life and career--at times she shares lengthy stories that have very specific details, while at other times she doesn't seem to recall much of anything. So whether you enjoy this book will depend upon which parts of her life you are looking for.

The books starts with a lot of detail about her rich upbringing. She, of course, claims that her family was not rich but the mansion and servants give away the truth.Much of the first fourth of the book has to do with family history and the impact of the war.

Once she gets to Hollywood she says nothing about her impressions of America. Even though her mother came from here, Caron says nothing about what it was like to adjust to life in the U.S.--she just starts right in with the making of An American in Paris. Most surprising is that she shares the least amount of information about some of the projects she is best known for and the famous people she worked with. You'll hunger for more when she talks about Cary Grant, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, while wanting to skip other chapters filled with unfamiliar names. She does reveal a little about her years with Warren Beatty and the playboy's controlling personality is confirmed here.

Overall, the book lacks much introspection and insight. In the end your satisfaction with the book will depend upon how much you enjoy reading about her French childhood or some of the artists she knew. For those of us who would like to hear more specifics about her greatest films and co-stars, the book is lacking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Heaven for writing your memoirs
I was delighted to find Leslie's memoirs in print. They should be read fast the first time and then slowly the second time to savor every chapter. This is honest, straightforward, diplomatic, kind and classy and gives a glimpse into the world of Hollywood, the theatre and ballet. I have followed Leslie Caron's life and career for more than 50 years.
In 1957 I worked for Leslie Caron and Peter Hall as cook-housekeeper in their first flat in Hyde Park Square. Winston Churchill had his London residence across the Square. Baby Christopher was just a few weeks old and taken care of by Maria, the Swiss Nanny. The flat was a hospitable place with frequentlunch or dinner guests. I cooked for and served Cecil Beaton, Jean Renoir, Gene Kelly (he had a sensitive stomach and liked my bland soup), John Osborne, Lars Schmidt, Tennessee Williams and others.
When the Hall family left July 3, 1957 for Paris for the outdoor scenes for the movie GIGI, Leslie Caron wore a chic two piece grey suit she had sewn just a few days before. She constantly amazed me with her many talents, including in the kitchen. She taught me to prepare a leg of lamb and I use this method to this day.
The Halls liked to try different dishes; their favorite were Wiener Schnitzel and a Mocha cream dessert which was requested often. The Halls were kind and appreciative and sad when I gave notice. They had hoped I would stay months or years longer but I needed to turn my life into a different direction.
Thank you Leslie Caron for sharing your remarkable life so far. You always were and are a classy lady!

5-0 out of 5 stars warm and womanly
Leslie Caron didnt write a FAQ - she wrote of her memories - the ones that resonate in her mind - she explored her inner world as it was affected by the events of the outer world - she painted in broad strokes rather in minutia - so that not all personages are fleshed out equally - not every classic movie moment is elaborated on - this is her personal perspective - thats why i found this book very satisfying

some of her character may be discerned in the formality of the writing style - i suspect that it is Leslie's writing - not a translation from French - after all - she seems to have written a book of short stories (Vengeance) in English - so why not this

her facility with english is amazing considering she spoke little of it when she began her Hollywood career - despite having an American mother - but the prose in this book suits her - its like the discipline induced by ballet - by her upper middle class upbringing - by her life in England in the Shakespearean theater world of her second husband Peter Hall

Leslie was one of the brightest movies stars when I was young - i preferred her to her contemporary Audrey Hepburn - and still do - Leslie was sexier - more human - as good an actress - and a better dancer - she had a unique voice that made her french accent sound different from anyone elses french accent - reviving memories of her performances can bring a ray of sunshine into my life - so it has been a distinct pleasure becoming better acquainted with the warm and intelligent woman behind the image

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Sorry, to all those gave this book rave reviews, I wish I could share your enthusiasm, but I just can't. I am a fan, Fanny and Gigi, being my favorite of Caron's films.Having seen Leslie Caron on Private Screenings with Robert Osborne, I was much impressed with her humor and her sense of fun about her career, elements I found sadly lacking in her book.I am not referring to her WWII stories, I don't expect her to have numerous funny stories about war, but her postwar career years are curiously lacking in enthusiasm and enjoyment. She had a wonderful career, worked with, and socialized with the some of the best artists the world has known, and apparently tooklittle personal satisfaction in it.Some of her personal friendships,as with Christopher Isherwood are exceptions to that statement, but all those years and all those wonderful achievements in dance and on film and stage result in extremely few smiles on my face as I read about them.Maybe it's foolish on my part, but I keep thinking to be born with the talent Caron has and to have achieved the levels of success she did, should have provided her with a sense she had been blessed in some way the rest of us were not and the wonderment of the journey that provided for her.If it did, she seems to have decided to not share much of that sense of wonderment in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Put
THANK HEAVEN is much like the author herself:classy.
Leslie Caron relives her past - her upbringing in a war torn France, her early, hectic days in Hollywood at the end of the golden era - in an honest and fun way.
Not exactly a Tell-All, but Ms. Caron has an endearing and quite charming way (just like in her films) so that you feel you are sitting with a friend who is confiding a few secrets with you.
In THANK HEAVEN, Ms. Caron seems to be letting us in on secrets but knows how to hold back just a bit so that they are informative but never nasty. I enjoyed her stories about Gene Kelly, Cary Grant, Maurice Chevalier and the rest of the A List that she worked with during her reign. ... Read more

Product Description
Featuring more than 100 photographs, this lavish tribute looks back with affection at the remarkable and influential career--on both sides of the camera--of one of the cinema's most popular stars. Now in paperback. Gene Kelly was the man who dragged Hollywood musicals into the second half of the 20th century--splashing through puddles in ``Singing in the Rain,'' dancing to the top of the Empire State Building in ``Our Town,'' teaching French kids to sing Gershwin in ``An American in Paris.'' He took dancing out of the ballroom and set it alive on the streets. He was also, of course, an actor, choreographer, and director, but it is as the first modern screen dancer that Gene Kelly will always be remembered. This picture-filled volume is a tribute to his rare talent and indelible body of work. Sheridan Morley is a drama critic and biographer, whose subjects include Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. Ruth Leon is the author of Applause: New York's Guide to the Performing Arts. 168 pp 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 8 color & 100 b/w photos ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I really thought this book was great! If you are a Gene Kelly fan this book is for you. It has little tid bits about Gene that a fan would want to know. Gene Kelly- A Celebration mostly talks about the movies Gene made and his contributions to the movies. Great pictures also.I highly recommend buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about THE MAN
This book is a must for all Gene Kelly fans.It has wonderful pictures of him, and allows you insight into his life. This book describes the making of each movie that he made.Buy this book, and I'm sure you won't regretit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Photos, Not Enough Story
The other reviewers have said what I am going to say:There just is not enough about Gene Kelly's life in this book. It's a little TOO "celebratory".Any conflicts that arise between him and othersat the time are glossed over as Kelly doing no wrong. Some of his failuresare presented as if they did not create a problem for the star, yet anyonewho has lived on this planet (so then everyone) KNOWS that Kelly's failuresand difficulties were probably not as ho-hum as the authors would like usto believe. In their attempt to be respectful of the venerable star, theytake us sometimes for fools who have not experienced life.I'm onlytwo-thirds of the way through the book, but it does not seem to me they aregoing to mention the fact that Kelly kept Michael Kidd from becoming morethan he could have been, speculated by some to be the result of jealousyand insecurity about the competition Kidd offered. Also, several ofKelly's famous dance numbers are referred to as "the mostremembered", "his biggest", "his most famous","his daringest", etc.Well, they can't ALL be that.Thisindulgence in hyperbole is reminiscent of a "That'sEntertainment" film. The photographs are wonderful, but the book'slayout creates an awkardly cumbersome book that is too heavy for what itcontains, and just doesn't "fit" well on your lap when reading inbed, nor does it carry around well when moving from room to room in yourhouse on a lazy Saturday when trying to enjoy your book.I know that seemspetty, but reading is an entire experience with a definite ritual.Theshape of this book interferes with that coffee-and-pajamas-on-the-couchritual.It's just too heavy and could have been easily condensed intosomething smaller and more manageable.Nitpicking aside, read this if youare a Kelly fan. It's a delightful journey back in time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Colorful, but not entirely comprehensive!
Initially, this book is very alluring. Now, i'm not one to "dog on" anything affiliated with the legendary icon, Gene Kelly... However, this book is less than PERFECT.It contains many wonderful pictures, as well as commentary(nowadays, the "bare-minimum requirements of any "celebrity tribute" book), but lacks in-depth information about the artist. In that sense, this "celebration" does not do Mr. Kelly justice.Mr. Kelly is great, the jem of americana.Sadly, this book is only half as pristine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book on a fantastic man
I am so ecstatic that they finally have a book out there all about Gene Kelly.. The pictures are great. It's well worth your time to order it.. I am such a HUGE fan of Gene Kelly, he is the ultimate cure for the blues, him and chocolate Forever sigin' In The Rain.. :o) ... Read more

Excerpt: Jean-Georges Noverre (29 April 1727 19 October 1810) was a French dancer and balletmaster, and is generally considered the creator of ballet d'action, a precursor of the narrative ballets of the 19th century. His birthday is now observed as International Dance Day. His first professional appearances occurred as a youth in Paris at the Opéra-Comique, at Fontainebleau, in Berlin before Frederick II and his brother Prince Henry of Prussia, in Dresden and Strasburg. He moved to Strasbourg where he remained until 1750 before moving to Lyon. In 1751, he composed his first great work, Les Fêtes Chinoises for Marseilles. The work was revived in Paris in 1754 to great acclaim. In 1755, he was invited by Garrick to London, where he remained for two years. Excerpt: Audrey Hepburn (4 May 1929) 20 January 1993) was a British actress and humanitarian. Born in Ixelles, Belgium as Audrey Kathleen Ruston, Hepburn spent her childhood chiefly in the Netherlands, including German-occupied Arnhem, Netherlands, during the Second World War.
