Product Description
In this exquisite gift book, Mary Yelloly's watercolors depict life in the English countryside, where the imaginary Grenville family, invented by Mary, spends its days playing games, taking walks, and enjoying carriage rides. Assisted by her "Nanna" and her sisters, Mary painted the elegant and fashionable Rosedale House, Gloucestershire, surrounded by parkland. The story is told through the child's eyes both in a series of interiors-drawing rooms, libraries, and opulent bedrooms-and a sequence of beautiful landscapes. The book offers a delightfully innocent view of life in 19th-century England, but it also tells the intriguing tale of school-age Mary Yelloly, whose brief life appears to have been as charmingly domestic as those she depicts on the pages. Gatefolds, marbleized paper, and beautifully reproduced illustrations make this book an irresistible gift and the exceptionally accomplished watercolors will be of special interest to art lovers. ... Excerpt: Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith, KG, PC, KC (12 September 1852 15 February 1928) served as the Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. He was the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in the twentieth century until early 1988. As Prime Minister, he led his Liberal party to a series of domestic reforms, including social insurance and the reduction of the power of the House of Lords. He led the nation into The First World War, but a series of military and political crises led to his replacement in late 1916 by David Lloyd George. His falling out with Lloyd George played a major part in the downfall of the Liberal Party. Before his term as Prime Minister he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1905 to 1908 and as Home Secretary from 1892 to 1895. During his lifetime he was known as H. H. Asquith before his accession to the peerage and as Lord Oxford afterwards. Asquith's achievements in peacetime have been overshadowed by his weaknesses in wartime. Many historians portray a vacillating prime minister, unable to present the necessary image of action and dynamism to the pu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=87229 ... Read more

Excerpt: House of Tudor (by marriage) Catherine of Aragon (Spanish: Catalina de Aragón y Castilla) (16 December 1485 7 January 1536), also known as Katherine or Katharine, was Princess of Wales as the wife to Arthur, Prince of Wales, and Queen of England as the first wife of King Henry VIII of England. Such was Catherine's impression on people, that even her enemy, Thomas Cromwell, said of her "If not for her sex, she could have defied all the heros of History." Excerpt:Alma Cogan Alma Cogan (19 May 1932 26 October 1966) was an English singer of traditional pop music in the 1950s and early 1960s. Dubbed "The Girl With the Laugh / Giggle / Chuckle In Her Voice", she was the highest paid British female entertainer of her era. Throughout the mid 1950s, she was the most consistently successful female singer in the UK . Early life She was born Alma Angela Cohen in Golders Green , London of East European Jewish descent: her parents Mark and Fay Cohen had another daughter: the future actress Sandra Caron, four or five years later and Alma Cogan also had a brother. Mark Cohen's work as a haberdasher involved opening stores in different areas; this entailed frequent relocation for his family. One of Cogan's early residences was in Worthing , Sussex - where her family originally lived above her father's shop. Although Jewish, she attended St Joseph's Convent School in Reading . Her father was a singer but it was Cogan's mother who had show business aspirations for both her daughters - she had named Cogan after silent screen star Alma Taylor - and after eleven year old Cogan won the Sussex Queen of Song contest her encouraged mother managed to get her an audition with bandleader Ted Heath , who was impressed but thought Cogan too young. Nevertheless by her teens Cogan was singing at London tea dances and at age fourteen she was featured in a variety show at the Grand Theatre in Brighton having been recommended by Vera Lynn . Proceeding to Worthing Art College, Cogan continued singing in London venues including Selby'... ... Read more

Chapters: Empress Matilda, Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Burton, H. H. Asquith, Hugh Macdonald Sinclair, David Astor, Thomas Beckington, Thomas Brunce. Excerpt:David Astor Francis David Langhorne Astor CH (5 March 1912, London 7 December 2001, London ) was an English newspaper publisher and member of the prominent Astor family . Early life and education David Astor was the third child of American-born parents, Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879 1952) and Nancy Witcher Langhorne (1879 1964). The product of an immensely wealthy business dynasty, and raised in the grandeur of a great country estate where the political and intellectual elite of the time gathered, he nevertheless had an instinctive compassion for the poor and those who were the victims of destructive socioeconomic policies. An extremely shy man, David Astor was greatly influenced by his father but as a young man he rebelled against his strong-willed mother. Educated at Eton College he went on to Oxford University where he suffered a nervous breakdown and left in 1933 without obtaining a degree. He was psychoanalysed by Anna Freud and during World War II he served with distinction and was wounded in France . Early career While at Balliol College, Oxford in 1931, he met a young anti-fascist German, named Adam von Trott zu Solz , who was to become the most influential figure in his life. Von Trott's involvement in the 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler led to his execution. In 1936, Astor joined the Yorkshire Post newspaper where he worked for a year then joined his father's newspaper, The Observer where he would serve as editor for 27 years. With his father's advancing age, and high inheritance taxes in England, in 1945 David Astor and his brother transferred ownership of the paper to a board of trustees. The trust contain... ...
