4-0 out of 5 stars "Shanghai Knights": Am looking forward to the movie!
"First they tamed the Wild West, now Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon are saddling up again. This time, they're headed for London, England."

The story starts off in the year 1887. In the Forbidden City of China, Chon Wang's father, the Keeper of the Seal, is murdered and the Imperial Seal is stolen. Hearing about this and also that his sister, Lin, had followed the murderer to London, Chon Wang immediately sets out to find his sister. With friend and fellow partner Roy O'Bannon in tow, the two upon setting foot in England discover a dire plot to overthrow the two countries of China and England. Will Chon Wang, Roy, and Lin be able to catch the crooks and save the two countries?

"Shanghai Knights" is actually the prequel to the 2000 movie, "Shanghai Noon". Starring Jackie Chan as the 'fish-out-of-water' Chinese man who came to America and Owen Wilson as Roy O'Bannon the 'not-quite-your-average' outlaw, "Shanghai Noon" has always been one of my favorite movies to watch. And of course when I heard that the sequel "Shanghai Knights" was coming out, I knew I had to see it. But since the movie won't be coming out for a few more weeks (February 7th, 2003), I decided to get the novelization.

As far as the plot goes, I'm very much looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. There's definitely going to be a lot more acion than in the first movie, and plus there's a romance going on (you've probably guessed who falls in love with whom). And you might not believe me but the sequel might actually be a lot more fun than the first one!

As far as this novelization goes, it was an ok book to read but there is a down side to reading this novel. For one thing, the book is aimed more for kids, maybe 10 - 12. I knew from the beginning that since the movie will be rated PG-13, the book will be cutting some scenes and changing the plot a bit. I would have really preferred reading a 'real' novelization of "Shanghai Knights" but this is all there is. Plus the reading level is very easy, I'm sure any teenager or adult will finish this in 1 hour flat.

If you're 13 or so and younger or you're really looking forward to seeing the movie, I can easily recommend this book for you. But if you're really not all that excited about the upcoming movie... just wait for the movie to come out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex & Bullets
A book for those with an interest in the far-out from the farside of the globe.A well-written guide to films that are action-packed, sexy, and in several cases, just plain odd.Well worth the read for anyone looking for an introduction into the world of Hong Kong Cinema.

Read, enjoy, learn, then start trying to track down these films that range from classic to trashy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the book - No Need To See The Movies1
I just dont get the appeal of this book, I'm sorry. For the most part, all it contains is a bunch of detailed plot information (yes Virginia, including key plot twists and endings) and very little information as to if the movies were any good!Yes, he has some special lists ("movies that rip"), but just not enough.I wanted this book as a reference to all of the HK movies out there, so I could see what was good before plunking down my cash on them - after reading about a few movies, I felt I no longer needed to buy them because I had already seen them. There are much better options.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good enthusiastic intro to Hong Kong movies!
This is an excellent book for someone just getting into HK movies- it's populist and unpretentious, but it doesn't just dismiss the movies as 'fun trash.'It covers most of the classics, like Peking Opera Blues, The Bride with White Hair, Chungking Express, etc. and includes capsule reviews of slightly more obscure movies. There's also a good glossary explaining the durian (among other things) and compilations of choice bad subtitles. My main qualm about it is that it more or less neglects HK comedies- the authors even warn non-Cantonese speakers not to see them, because they won't understand 'em.This is NOT TRUE. But buy the book anyway and seek information about HK comedies elsewhere.^^

3-0 out of 5 stars A look at the cult side of HK films
This book is only helpful for those with little knowledge of Hong Kong films. It's more playful than artistic, yet there are some helpful film reviews included. Some of the information is outdated: Web sites, where to buy HK films, etc..., but if your new to HK films and are interested in the pop culture gems that come out of Hong Kong, then check this book out.For those interested in a more in-depth look at Hong Kong films, I recommend City on Fire, by Lisa Stokes and Micheal Hoover.

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun introduction of Hong Kong cinema
Memo to the reader from Denver: did you read the same book I did? Yeah,I'll admit that I wish the authors hadn't gone into quite so much detailabout the plots, but how can you say they didn't review any of the films? The authors' enthusiasm for this exhilarating subsection of filmdompermeates every sentence herein; everything they write is filtered throughtheir opinions, which are mostly positive, because, as they explain in theintro, they put the spotlight on the films they loved the most. With theexception of the informative sidebars, there's nothing BUT reviews here.

I love this book. It's not meant to be an HK film encyclopedia, just afeet-wetting introduction to an unjustly overlooked body of work. As that,it's nearly perfect. ... Read more

Read more

Chapters: Kung-Fu Master, Jackie Chan Adventures, the Kung-Fu Master Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Jackie Chan Stuntmaster. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Kung-Fu Master, known in Japan as Spartan X ), is a 1984 beat 'em up arcade game developed and published in Japan by Irem. It was later published in North America by Data East. The Japanese version was based on the movie starring Jackie Chan of one of the alternate names of the film, Wheels on Meals, and credited "Paragon Films Ltd., Towa Promotion", who produced the film upon which it was based. The game is considered by many to be the first beat 'em up video game, and contains elements of Bruce Lee's Game of Death. The player takes the role of Keiji Thomas, a man in a Keikogi and slippers. Thomas's girlfriend, Sylvia, has been kidnapped by "Mr. X", and Thomas must fight through five side-scrolling floors full of enemies to rescue her. Brutally summarized as "rescue girlfriend hit people", the US and UK version opens with the phrase "Thomas and Sylvia were attacked by several unknown guys...." The game was an early beat 'em up. It is cited as one of the inspirations for subsequent successes like Double Dragon, Final Fight, Captain Commando, Streets of Rage, P.O.W.: Prisoners of War and Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja. Thomas can punch with the A button and kick with the B button. Either move can be done from a crouching or jumping position. Punches are worth twice as much as kicks and do twice as much damage, but their range is shorter. Screenshot of Kung-Fu Master. The first floor of the temple contains Grippers and Knife Throwers. Subsequent levels introduce Tom Toms, poisonous moths, fire-breathing dragons, snakes, and confetti balls. Each of the five floors ends with a different boss who must ...
