And now for something completely not funny, yet indispensible.
...but that's not a bad thing (explanation below).

I got this book for Christmas and was concerned that because of it's size I would probably end up just thumbing through and reading select parts.Not the case.I started reading it and couldn't stop.

It covers the group and individuals from their pre-Python lives through discussions of working together again after The Live at Aspen event - though I won't tell you what conclusion they came to.In between is chock full of every detail about their influences, TV show, the movies, the stage shows and more.And because each member contributes (hence...autobiography) you get a great insider's perspective on the dynamics of the group.You learn first hand who doesn't like who, what they enjoyed and how, at times, they really struggled, and a bunch more behind the scenes insights into their personalities.

I found the book to be fascinating.It is formatted such that each event is discussed by multiple members of the troop.So you get a 360 degree view of their writing sessions, their fights, their good times, their movie productions, their business and artistic relationships.

The only downside (and here is why I titled this as such) is that it was rarely funny.That is by no means a fault, but could come as a surprise (as it did me) to the reader who expects it to be silly and funny like their performances.As a result this book is probably only going to be of interest to a true Python fan.And a true Python fan will find it indispensible.

Wonderful book
The Pythons were like the British Marx Brothers, Anti-authority,
subversive, surreal, and very very funny.Particularly interesting are the Python's accounts of their childhood and pre-fame days.

It seems "A Careful Reader" wasn't so careful after all.The picture of Dudley Moore (and it is most assuredly him) is on page 68 NOT 88.Here's a clue for ACR...he's about 30 years younger than he was when he appeared in the movie "10."Thank you and good night!

A few points about this Monty Python book
On page 88 it says that one of the four men in the photo is Dudley Moore. The fellow in the picture doesn't look at all like Dudley Moore. Furthermore, it says, on another page,that Ian MacNaughton is beseeching Terry Jones. But the man MacNaughton is begging seems to actually be Michael Palin. On a different note, in his autobiography part of the book Eric Idle seems too proud of his anti-authority stances. The 60's are very long gone now. Idle should grow up and not be so flaunting of his anti-societial ways. Being part of society is back in fashion. ... Read more

I DON'T LIKE SPAM!!!
If you're a Python fan (like me) you want this book (in fact, you want both volumes).I own the entire series on DVD and the books are a great complement to the DVDs.So, if you want to read along or maybe even memorize the whole "Johann Gambol-puddy...." sequence, pick up your copy today.

This is the second volume of the set. Yes, all the words and cues are there.If you like Python, you need this!

great for those who know the series
This was a lot of fun for getting down into the intricacies of some of the sketches.You catch things that make you laugh at the memory of watching them.

And now for something completely different
I've seen "Monty Python's Flying Circus" so many times that I can recite long stretches of it. But those guys are always using weird accents and manic deliveries ("My neeples explode with delight!"), and sometimes they're hard to understad.

Fortunately for those times, Python fans have "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words," a series from the second half of the classic comedy skit show. These are only trascripts (a bit lacking in details), but still enormous fun and full of delightfully quotable lines ("And now my lords, my ladies... your LUPINS!").

It opes with the weird "Conquistador Coffee" sketch, in which a boss berates his employee for changing the brand's name to Conquistador Instant Leprosy. ("The tingling fresh coffee that brings you exciting new cholera, mange, dropsy, the clap, hard pad, and athlete's foot." "It was a soft sell, sir.")

And then it contains plenty of others: the cheese shop with no cheese, films with giant teeth, spam spam spam, cannibal undertakers, Njorl's it's-not-that-terrible saga, the BBC's financial troubles, the Money Programme, the pantomime horse, hairdressers climbing Everest, the war against pornography, Gumbys, Dennis Moore, kamikaze highlanders, and the golden age of ballooning ("I am so excited I can hardly wash!").

The dialogue to each one is carefully outlined, with each character identified as being played by one of the guys (like "Interviewer (JOHN)"), although we usually don't get to hear much about Terry Gilliam's mad animations. Most of these episodes are one long continuing sketch that spills from one scenario to the next, but occasionally we'll have different ones patched together.

These guys had a rare, crazy talent -- these sketches are crammed with glorious dialogue ("Drop your panties, Sir William. I cannot wait till lunchtime") and bizarre insults ("you cloth-eared heap of anteater's catarrh"). Not much description of the action in places, although in a few we get plenty of detail when it's called for (such as the weirdness convention).

The problem is that this should only be read after you've seen the series. If you don't, it all seems like a befuddling string of of stream-of-consciousness comedy numbers, full of in-jokes and surreal twists. You have a better chance of finding Ilchester in a cheese shop than understanding this without seeing the skits first.

In case you couldn't understand what Eric Idle was bibbling in one episode, or John Cleese was screaming in another, "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words Volume 2" will tell you what is going on. No time to lose!

Some Very Funny Manuscripts
A very funny book that consists of two manuscripts of the script for the movie. One is the first draft and the other is the final draft and I'm VERY glad they were able to set it entirely in the Middle Ages (and not half of it in Herrod's) because the consistency between the two time periods was awful. There were some classically funny bits, like having Sir Bevedere buy a toupee "for a friend", in the Herrod's scenes, but nothing that really went with the rest of the movie. It was also nice to finally read all the subtitles from the credits, which I've never been able to do well, even with pausing.

Rate crap.
I love Monty Python.Absolute genius in every way.The Holy Grail movie is high on my shelves in its place of honor.This, however, is a horridly inaccurate bastardization of the script.Every five sentences contains an error, leaving out numerous words, including some of the jokes.You can find scripts far more accurate and complete online.Don't buy this, really, find a better one.

Lame "novelization" of original "The Book"
I ordered this a little hastily. It is a standard sized paperback with little more than the lines as they appear in the film.

There is a FAR COOLER screenplay that is apparently out of print that you should search for. It's about 8.5" by 11" and includes lots of interesting extras - sketches and deleted/changed lines. I found one on another site that hosts lots of used books often for "half" cover price.

This Movie Had Me Hysterical!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is perhaps the funniest and stupidest movie you will ever encounter.It had me on the floor laughing-no-crying, unable to breathe.The creators of Monty Python have the most odd sense of humor, and that's what I like in movies.Perhaps it's the stupidity of it all; perhaps it's just me, but I'll tell you one thing: if you have trouble breathing, DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE!It will definitely choke you.Here is a brief summary of my favorite parts:
Sir Arthur is in need of noble and worthy knights, so he rides off on his imaginary horse to find them.He finds a castle pretty soon.The first one he encounters is a masked man who has just one a battle.However, the masked knight will not let Arthur pass.So they fight.Arthur cuts off all the knights limbs, and yet the knight does not seem to notice.(One of the funniest scenes.)Once Arthur has aquired all his knights, they go in search of the Holy Grail.The first major problem they face is that the Knights of Nee block their path.To proceed, the Knights of Nee require that Arthur find-get ready for this-a shrubbery!So, Arthur returns with the shrubbery.But the Knights of Nee request that he finds-another shrubbery.And once he has found the shrubbery, he must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with-a herring.Okay...Sir Arthur says, "I won't do it!"It just so happens that the Knights of Nee can't hear the word "it".They immediately fall to the ground, and Sir Arthur and his companions are able to proceed.
There are many other hilarious scenes is this movie, such as Sir Launcelot saving someone from a castle that he believes to be a girl, but is really a boy, the head of another castle throwing dead animals down at Arthur, a ferocious rabbit biting off someone's head, and the film ending when the police smash the camera lense.If you get this movie, you are guaranteed to fall on the floor laughing.

For ten bucks, what the heck
Amazon has knocked five bucks off the list price of this book which just about makes it worth it. As others have noted, if you're a true MPFC fan, you've seen the movie so many times that you know the script by heart already. You also probably own a copy of the film. So why do you need this book? I dunno. There are no new photos, no commentary... If you know someone who is new to the world of MPFC, it's a safe bet that you'll lend them the video and not the screenplay. On the other hand, for the collector of all things Monty, for ten bucks, this will fill the bill. So what the heck? Go for it. ... Read more

Great soundtrack, be sure to read description
I worked on this CD.The images posted on this Amazon page are correct for the "Monty Python's Flying Circus" soundtrack from "The Infamous Television Series: 1969-1974" which was released in Summer 2009 by De Wolfe Music. It is a soundtrack of incidental music from selected TV series sketches.It does not contain audio dialogue from the sketches.The written track listing originally placed on the Amazon product description page was not for the CD pictured, but as of 30 August 09 it appears that things have been corrected.There are no lyrics, explicit or otherwise.

For the actual soundtrack CD, it's a great collection for Python buffs.I had a lot of fun listening to the CD while working on the project, and it brought back a lot of memories of great comedy. ... Read more

thin python is better than no python
It isn't huge.It's laced with themes from the tv shows.

Monty Python's Big Red Book has a lot of material from the show, which makes it a good one. This may not take you that long to read, but I think it'll be worth it. I first read this over my friend's house a few years ago, and I thought it was cool, so I got myself a copy.I'm surprised the spam song is in it with the lumberjack song. It's a nice thing to read right before you go to bed.Look, just read it yourself and see what you think.

Bigger rip-off than final rip-off
First of all, this book is neither big, nor red. It's quite thin actually, and is blue. There is limited new material in it, and the actual new material isn't very special. This doesn't seem like a Monty Python product at all. It was probably thrown together at the last minute. I purchased this today, finished it an hour ago, and I'm still frustrated with it. However, I purchased the "First 280 years of Monty Python" book, and really like it so far. "The Pythons" is also good, but is kind of all over the place, but "280 years" is mainly focused on the television show. So in conclusion, hesitate on this one, unless you think it will bethe last Python book you'll ever buy.

Blue
Inevitably, this is a big blue book. My hardback copy dates from 1971, and originally cost 1.50 ukp. It's a fairly slim collection of material based around the first couple of series of the show - an advertisement for'Whizzo Chocolate Assortment', a series of introductions fromincreasingly-flustered newsreaders, pages of classified ads, and more thana few naked women. It's much less effective than the television show - thetranscriptions lose a lot without the delivery, and the original bits seemrushed. If you've seen the movie....
The format is a mass-market paperback, but this isn't a novelization but rather the screenplay as the movie was made. You'll notice that last has a subtle distinction. Oftentimes screenplays differ notably from the movies as you see them--scenes are cut because they didn't work, cost too much to do, or just because of the limits of time. The screenplays of Brazil and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are full of wonderful little tidbits that didn't make it to the screen. This is not a music book!!
This book far disappointed me as a music/piano book.This book contains only melody lines with no accompaniment, except for chords above the melody lines.And to make matters worse, the music is not on solid colored paper, but on different colored paper with images superimposed on it.

I'm surprised at how people liked this book, because unless you play guitar, or just want to plunk out a melody with cheesy block chords, it's not worth the money.

For Silly Glee Club Members Only
This book is filled with lots of hillarious song lyrics, ranging from the witty to the weird and silly and is useful if you feel the need to sing along to some of your favourite Python songs while listening to a Python* CD, especially when you come across parts where it is difficult to understand what they are singing. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend buying this book. The artwork is interesting**, but is not worthwhile in itself, and just reading the lyrics is less rewarding than listening to the songs.And none of the songs are new.So if you just like LISTENING to Python CDs and don't feel the need to join in***, there is no point in buying the book.Furthermore, if you want it for playing the songs on the piano, as some of the other reviewers point out, it is often difficult to read, and it is also impossible to prop up properly without causing some damage to the spine (of course if you don't care, you could just cut out the pages, etc.).

*Not recommended for singing along to death metal bands...

Wow. I have the big box set of Monty Python's Flying circus, and had basically memorized all of the songs. I also have most of the movies. So finding this little jewel was a real treat! Now I can play them on mytrusty piano, and have the background music. This will make for some weirdfamily reunions :)

Inflammation of the foreskin reminds me of your smile. . . .
This is a book for every Monty Python fan out there! It is really excellent, and includes almost all the songs, excluding a few of the lesser ones like "Sgnt Duckie's Song" and "The Window CleanerSong" but just about everything else is in there. Admittedly, it's abit annoying about some of the music being illigeble, such as "Ericthe Half A Bee" appearing in a sphere shape, and "Bing TiddleTiddle Bong" being flipped totally around. However, it's still a greatbook, and the foreword, afterword, and middleword by Elvis and God are veryfunny. There's nothing better than to sit down at the piano sometimes andjust play magnificent songs like "I've got a Ferret sticking up mynose..." This is a super book!

Excerpt: John Richard Deacon (born 19 August 1951) is a retired English musician, best known as the bass guitarist for the rock band Queen. Of the four members of the band, he was the last to join and also the youngest, being only 19 years old when he joined. Deacon wrote a number of Queen's hit singles, including "You're My Best Friend", "Spread Your Wings", "Back Chat", "I Want to Break Free" and the band's biggest selling single in the United States, "Another One Bites the Dust", as well as a number of album tracks. He also played rhythm and acoustic guitars on several albums as well as occasional keyboards, synthesiser and programming. He frequently provided backing vocals during live shows. Following The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992, Deacon's sole performance with the remaining members of Queen was a one-off rendition of "The Show Must Go On" in 1997 with Mercury's friend Elton John (who had originally sung the track with the band at Mercury's tribute). He contributed to the final Queen song, "No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)" released that year on the Queen Rocks compilation after which he retired from the music industry. He chose not to participate with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor in the Queen + Paul Rodgers collaboration, but did give them his support.
