5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Series
This whole "Pocketful of Python" series strikes me as just a bit odd. Much of it was released to mark Monty Python's 30th Anniversary, and it seems like something of a cash-in. After all, it's just portions of other Python books crammed into several volumes in a slightly new way.
That said, I have gotten an awful lot of enjoyment from the series (hence the five star rating.) This is undoubtedly the best book of the series. Normally I'd just write about my favorites bits, but John Cleese's selection is so good I'll list them all.
African Notebook, Anne Elk's (Miss) Theory, Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson, Consulting Jean-Paul Sartre, Eric the Half a Bee, Fear No Man!, Jonah Gambolputty, Larch in Court, The Last Supper, Merchant Banker, Mollusks, Norman Henderson's Diary, History of Mankind Medallions, Oh Lord Please Don't Burn Us, Python Panel, Raymond Luxury Yacht, Sacred Castles, We Are Individuals, and Word Association Football.

4-0 out of 5 stars British radio comedy from the 70's that is an acquired taste
OK since I am the first reviewer here I'll give you a super quick rundown of what is going on m'kay? You get John Cleese, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie, Jo Kendall and David Hatch doing a comedy radio show. They got together for a number of years to do this and each show was ½ an hour long - like the Goon show that propelled Spile Milligan and co to comedy fame. There were a number of vinyl release tie ins for this series and a couple of books. The best place to find them via Amazon would probably be to look at the UK Amazon site since being a British radio show and given the product would have come out under the auspices of the BBC that is probably where most of the 2nd hand copies of this stuff is lying around.

Essentially those familiar with The Goodies probably have the best grounding in what to expect. It's that sort of somewhat juvenile and often very silly innuendo and bad groan inducing puns and with all three of the comedy duo who made up The Goodies in the cast and doing the bulk of the writing that can hardly come as a surprise. There are a few co-writes with the others but, well, not much seems to have come from them. In the tradition of the Goon show and other radio comedy of the time there is usually a central platform for the show to hinge on which is (vaguely) developed during the course of proceedings and unlike Monty Python, where the creators didn't feel the need to provide a coherent ending to virtually anything unless the fancy took them, here the show does try to bring things to a conclusion.

There were at least four of these cassette collections issued by the BBC in the 90's. Each has two cassettes with one show per side. Only this volume one seems available on either US or UK Amazon. And a quick cruise through both sites shows that there aren't many proper CD's out there either though five volumes are available as MP3 Download. And quite cheap too.

For fans of The Goodies or those with a hankering for the sort of twee radio comedy the BBC produced in the 70's. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is addressed to everyone who is starved for time, i.e. everyone. We are all living in a culture that traps us into doing too many things, taking on too many responsibilities, facing too many choices and saying yes to too many opportunities. Nearing the end of over a century of inventions designed to save time, we find ourselves bereft of time itself.

What used to be considered a sign of success--being busy, having many responsibilities, being involved in many projects or activities--is now being felt as an affliction. It is leading us nowhere. More and more it is being experienced as meaningless.

This is the real significance of our problem with time. It is a crisis of meaning. What has disappeared is meaningful time. It is not technology or the accelerating influence of money; it is not global capitalism that is responsible for the time famine. The root of our modern problem with time is neither technological, sociological, economic nor psychological. It is metaphysical. It is a question of the meaning of human life itself.

The aim of this book is to uncover the link between our pathology of time and the eternal mystery of what a human being is meant to be in the universal scheme of things. The wisdom teachings of the world, each in its own way, have spoken of what we may call the soul, the spirit, the timeless, the eternal in man. But the challenge is to approach these ancient ideas in a way that is practical, that can actually lead us toward a solution of our problem. Words alone, no matter how sacred; ideas alone, no matter how profound, are not enough to help us confront our problem with time. But words, properly received; ideas, thoughtfully pondered; stories and images heard and attended to with an open heart, can help us feel the relationship between the question of our being and the problem of our life in time, after which ideas can find their proper place in our minds. In any case, this is how the author has written this book. A story and an image can enter our psyche in a way that concepts and analyses cannot. And so this examination of time and the human soul should perhaps begin, as all true stories begin, with the suddenly pregnant phrase:

"Once upon a time . . ." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NEVER HAVE I EVER READ A BOOK OF SUCH SIMPLE YET PROFOUND ELEGANCE
. . . It's not just what Jacob Needleman writes, it's how he writes. I haven't yet finished this soul-searching and soul-discovering book after over a week. I've been underlining and making notes and pondering the so-many brilliant thoughts that appear, seemingly part of the flow, but profound in other directions than the time theme. At my pace, it may be months before I finish. I find myself walking around mumbling to myself, mulling over Needleman's avalanche of ideas and insights, sort of stunned.

How does Jacob Needleman write? Warmly. Simply. Insightfully. Dramatically. Preceptively. At one point he slipped into a parable of time travel, sending himself back to confront his younger self. I've never encountered such subtle, essential concepts so dramatically presented... So much to mull over!

After reading just over a third of this book I ordered most all of his other books. I briefly sampled them and find they're all of the same caliber. I firmly, honestly feel that I'm going to be a better person after assimilating his wisdom.

Sincerely, experience this extraordinary book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books I've ever read
Time and the Soul is simply one of the most important books I've ever read.I discovered it in an airport bookstore several years ago and consumed it in a single reading over a long flight. Its impact on me was profound - literally changing my life through being reawakened to the knowledge that there was so much more to my existence than the "outer world" concerns that were taking up so much of my time and energy.

Several years then passed until I "discovered" it again on my bookshelf. In the second reading, I gained so much additional insight that I often felt as though I had not actually read (or absorbed) this book's profound content in the first reading. From this second reading, I began a daily practice of Needleman's exercise of "stepping back."This one practice transformed my experience of time and of the quality of my life and led my down the path of developing my own ideas on how to create a life of meaning, which were ultimately published in my own book.Beyond this practice was a deepening of my life - physical, spiritual, emotional - and a true sense of pervading joy.

Today, as I stand on the threshold of 2008, I have just completed my third reading.I can honestly say that, once again, it is as though I have found a new level, a new depth, and an intensity of meaning in this profound work.Jacob Needleman is a true teacher; one whose message, whose insight, and whose gift in communication are unsurpassed in my opinion.

If you read this book using only your mind, you may find it interesting, but without real impact. But if you will open your heart, your spirit, your soul, you can find in this book the answers to your most important questions and a path to true joy and the awakening nourishment of your soul.

1-0 out of 5 stars I really tried!
I really tried. But having read it twice, I cannot escape the conclusion that, to me, it is a pretentious book. It tempts us in many places with hints of something deeper. Following his pointers, and doing his exercises, I found a few nice quotables, but otherwise not much. Certainly not the promised bounty.
At least it's short.

3-0 out of 5 stars The subject matter brings it up to three stars
The subject matter is important. I wish that the author had actually addressed the subject in a helpful way. As far as I can tell the book is a near waste until page 88. The author indicates that you cannot count on a self help book to point the way. I wonder why he wrote the book then. There is a reoccurring bit about an unfinished fictional story regarding a character going back in time to visit himself. It seems that had this story been actually good, it would have been published as fiction. I'm unclear regarding the point of that story, but it does take up a lot of space in the book. As the subject matter is important and because some there are some vague clues in the book I give it three stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help your Self
If you want to find more joy in your life, read this book. It's short, but gives you a lot of food for thought. It's no quick fix, but it does give you ideas for making your everyday life more satisfying. John Cleese's foreword really says it all: it's NOT a self-help book, it's a Self help book.

The book is by Jacob Needleman.John Cleese only wrote the foreword. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It was a great example of everyday life.
Screwtape Letters I think, is a great example of everyday life and how Satin tries to tempt us through everything we do.

Screwtape Letters is about a new christian, "the patient" and how he was tempted by Screwtape and his nephew Wormwood. They were trying to get the patient off the path to Heaven and onto the path of Hell. This is exactly what Satin tries to do with us; because he doesn't want us in the Kingdom of God. Satin will do everything in his power to steal us away from God and have us go the opposite direction. We need to realize what Satin is tring to accomplish and not let it happen. If we have done something wrong in this time we need to ask God for forgivness. For example, the patient was living with his mom and Satin got in a place of his life were it caused them to argue over little problems which turned into bigger ones. Slowly, the patiant was backing away from God. He then realized what he was doing and repented.

Satin tries to get into a part of our lives where we aren't as strong with God and starts bringing us down. Everyone sins, it is part of our human nature, but we as christians need to realize it, repent, and move on from our mistakes. In the end it will only strengthen our relationship with Christ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Falling or Standing Strong, Loved it!!!
I would recommend this book, The Screwtape Letters to pretty much anyone, but specifically new born Christians.I have been a Christian all my life and never really understood what everyone meant by Satan temps you.Yes, I knew that he tries to pull you farther and farther away from God, but I didn't realize how hard Satan and his friends try. This book is an amazing book and will definitely awaken you on what Satan is really doing.
Inside of me I kind of regret not reading this book sooner because already, in my short life I have been tempted so many times by Satan and haven't know what to do.I feel like this book was written just for me.For a while I have actually been struggling with Satan and his temptations and this book definitely awakened me on what I should be doing.
In the book, Screwtape, the uncle, tries to teach his nephew, Wormwood, how to tempt his patient in so many ways. They both try so hard to tear the patient away from God.They try to tempt him with girls, smoking, drugs, sexual immorality, and by the end of the book they soon realize God is more powerful in all things. No wonder why some many people fall into their traps because they don't stop until they get what they want, but always remember, God will be there for you always. He will be there through any temptation Satan or his friends throw at you.
Again I highly recommend this book to everyone.I think everybody needs to realize what Satan is doing and how we can stop it.Everybody deserves to know how important it is staying on a straight path with God.
The one thing that I wasn't all for, was that the whole book was letters. At times I got a little confused because Wormwood's letters didn't show.I think that really was the only thing I would change. Overall great book, great message!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I have read better books
The book The Screwtape Letters by C.S Lewis was unlike any other book that I have read.I have only been understanding how God helps us through life, and encourages us. It was a change for me to read a book that shows me Satan's side, and how he tempts us. It also showed me what Satan and his followers do to tempt us, and how they feel when a person gets closer to God.
This book gives good details. For example, when someone became a Christian, Uncle Screwtape ( one of Satan's higher followers) yelled at the follower in charge of keeping that person away from God. He was also giving advice on how to pull the person back away from God.
One of the things that I didn't like about this book, was the fact that the whole book was set up as letters. There wasn't really any narraration. It got boring for me to keep reading the same beginning of"My Dear Wormwood", and the same ending of " Your Affectionate uncle Screwtape." Personally I think it would be better if some of the chapters started and ended different, and if there was some narraration.
Overall this was a pretty good book. I would reccomend this book to teenagers of either genders. ... Read more

Product Description
This set of three audio CDs by author and scholar C.S. Lewis is read by English comedian John Cleese. This full-length version runs over 4 hours, including bonus track "Screwtape Proposes a Toast". Imported from the U.K., the set comes in a deluxe triple case with great artwork and will play in any ordinary CD player. The work became popular when published in The Guardian newspaper during World War II. Screwtape, an older successful devil in hell, responds to the naive letters of his nephew Wormwood, just graduated from a devil-based university. Now in the human world, Screwtape points Wormwood in the direction of his first "patient"with instructions to distract him from heavenly things. Wormwood's task is to cast doubt into his victim's soul, rendering him vulnerble to temptation and ultimately leading to self-damnation. It sounds easy, but proves to be a complex process that can take years (and many letters) to do. In the early 1970s, the letters were recorded by John Cleese, popular member of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" television show (i.e., Minstry of Funny Walks). Cleese is an accomplished intellectual, holding a Master's degree from Cambridge University, adding his own unmistakable style of realism to the correspondence. Making this his own personal project and classic work, Cleese's infusion of personality, character and intelligence into Lewis' Screwtape produces an addictive listening experience. As funny as it is disturbing, Cleese is downright uncomfortable to listen to at times. But while you may turn him off, you will sneak back a few hours later to continue listening to the entracing conversations, supplying a rare chance to hear the devil's own thoughts into the complex social politics of good and evil. Many people ponder if they might have a similar Screwtape in their own life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading of a classic!
I checked out the audio cassette version from my public library.Wow!That's the simplest way to put it.I can't think of anyone who could have read this better.John Cleese has the perfect voice to play the cynical, yet comical, devil Screwtape. He puts himself full throttle into this roll and it's a joy to listen to.

I really enjoy this reading of "The Screwtape Letters".Mr. Cleese puts a lot of emotion and life into his reading.I felt that in some places, the pausing/emotion got a bit too much, and I detest the musical interludes, but otherwise, this adaptation is lovely. One of my favorites, and I recommend it highly to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's...
I've seen "Monty Python's Flying Circus" so many times that I can recite long stretches of it by memory. But due to all those weird accents and manic deliveries ("GREET! GREET!"), sometimes not everything they say is totally coherent.

Fortunately for those times, Python fans have "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words," a series of transcripts of every sketch they did. They're lacking in detail at times, but still enormous fun and full of delightfully quotable lines ("It's probably pining for the fjords!").

Basically, ther first volume contains the first half the series, starting with the Mozart show and ending with "Long John Silver Impersonators Vs. Gynecologists. Among the classic comedy sketches: the Spanmish Inquisition, the Ministry of Silly Walks, the lethal joke used against the Germans, semprini, the Lumberjack song, the Attila the Hun show, how to defend yourself from fresh fruit, camel-spotting, Secret Service dentists, and the invasion of tennis-playing blamcmanges from the galaxy of Andromeda.

The dialogue to each one is laid out carefully, with each character identified (like "Interviewer (JOHN)"). Most of these episodes are one long continuing sketch -- ots of sketches that spill over into each other, with bare-bones descriptions of Terry Gilliam's bizarre animations. And, of course, the opening sequences, often with the "It's" man.

These guys had a rare and hysterical writing talent -- it's full of crazy glorious dialogue ("The black death, typhus, cholera, consumption, bubonic plague..." "Ah, those were the days"). Not much description of the action in places, though, especially where there is lots of action. But when necessary, they describe everything down to clothing and tear-shedding.

The problem is that this should only be read after you've seen the series, because otherwise it becomes a bewildering blur of stream-of-consciousness comedy numbers. You have a better chance of finding Ilchester in a cheese shop than of unerstainding what the heck is going on.

The first volume of "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words" is a hilarious companion book to the legendary TV series, and an excellent refresher for all those great lines. Now, alduce me to introlow myslef!

3-0 out of 5 stars What the books make one realize
That Monty Python is actually very limited a franchise. These few Python book which script the entire series in it's four year run (as there was only a few eps each year) really leave one saying "Is that all the fuss is about?" Sure there were Python movies (but about half of these films were simply rehashes of the series). I never understood when Python became so big. In the late 70's they were just something I watched on a UHF station latenight. Benny Hill was really funnier than Python (even the UHF station advertised Hill that way) but he didn't become as much of a franchise. Python shouldn't of either. Really there isn't that much to it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
A great book for any Monty Python fan. Like the title said "All The Words". I got both books (1 & 2) along with the dvd set and I read along with the dvd. Also great for sketches seeing as the desribe the scene as stuff is going on.

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed until I stopped
As a fan of MPFC since it first aired on PBS in 1973, these two volumes sort of put a cap on a 30 year fascination with the team. Maybe like me, you've watched every Python-Marathon or taped every show, but having these scripts really is the icing on the cake.

What's striking to me is the simplicity of the scripts. When you watch the episodes, the gags seem so complicated. Then to see The Dead Parrot sketch reduced to just a few pages, you realize how brilliant those guys were in terms of compression, and in terms of acting. An added plus, for me at least, was to finally see the words and phrases that I never quite "got" because they were unique to British English. From there, I logged on to a few websites on British slang and, boy, I realized what MPFC got away with...some of it was pretty raunchy. Anyway, this is two-volume set is priceless for any fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars So much more fun to see it on TV...
..but as a relaxed reading for someone who wants to learn the sketches by heart, this is the ultimate book. ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Monty Python (sometimes known as The Pythons) were a British comedy group that created the influential Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical as well as launching the members to individual stardom. The group's influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles' influence on music. The television series, broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974, was conceived, written and performed by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach (aided by Gilliam's animation), it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, they changed the way performers entertained audiences. The Pythons' creative contr...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ...
