Excerpt: Hugh John Grant (born 10 September 1960) is a British actor and film producer. He has received a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA, and an Honorary César. His movies have also earned more than $2.4 billion from 25 theatrical releases worldwide. Grant achieved international stardom after appearing in Richard Curtis's sleeper hit Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). He used this breakthrough role as a frequent cinematic persona during the 1990s to deliver comic performances in mainstream films like Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) and Notting Hill (1999). By the turn of the century, he had established himself as a leading man skilled with a satirical comic talent. In recent years, Grant has expanded his oeuvre with critically acclaimed turns as a cad in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), About A Boy (2002), and American Dreamz (2006). He has been criticised by students of cinema for putting emphasis on nuanced mannerisms, for the predictability of his movies, and for his unwillingness to stretch as an actor. Within the film industry, he is cited as a anti-movie star who approaches his roles like a character actor, with the ability to make acting...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=170779 ... Read more

Chapters: John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones. Excerpt:Eric Idle Eric Idle (born 29 March 1943) is an English comedian , actor , author , singer , writer and comedic composer . He wrote and performed as a member of the British comedy group Monty Python . Early life Idle was born in South Shields , County Durham (now Tyne and Wear ) in Harton Village, the son of Nora Barron (née Sanderson), a health visitor , and Ernest Idle. His father had served in the Royal Air Force and survived World War II , only to be killed in a hitch-hiking accident on Christmas Eve 1945. His mother had difficulty coping with a full-time job and raising a child, so when he was seven, she enrolled him into the Royal Wolverhampton School as a boarder . The school had begun life as a Victorian orphanage , and during Idle's time was a charitable foundation dedicated to the welfare of children who had lost one or both parents. Its pupils, who were mainly the children of dead English soldiers, still referred to it as the 'Ophney'. Idle is quoted as saying: "It was a physically abusive , bullying , harsh environment for a kid to grow up in. I got used to dealing with groups of boys and getting on with life in unpleasant circumstances and being smart and funny and subversive at the expense of authority. Perfect training for Python." Idle stated that the two things that made his life bearable were listening to Radio Luxembourg under the bedclothes and watching the local football team, Wolverhampton Wanderers . Despite this, he disliked other sports and would sneak out of school every Thursday afternoon to the local cinema. He was eventually caught watching the X-rated film BUtterfield 8 and stripped of his prefecture , even though by that time he was head boy . Idle had alrea... ... Read more

Read more

Auszug: Monty Python (sometimes known as The Pythons) were a British comedy group that created the influential Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical as well as launching the members to individual stardom. The group's influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles' influence on music. The television series, broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974, was conceived, written and performed by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach (aided by Gilliam's animation), it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, they changed the way performers entertained audiences. The Pythons' creative contr...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Shedding no light on the days when Cleese was funnier
This album attempts a retrospective of Cleese's BBC career as comic and writer, but I found it rather irksome and spotty. The CD does deliver some ofCleese's classic highlights. There is "The Dead Parrot Sketch," "The Cheese Shop," the "Don't Mention the War" bit from Fawlty Towers, the Four Yorkshiremen poverty one-upsmanship sketch and many more. The Three-inch String sketch manges to be silly and a rare satirical look at the advertising industry. Cleese wraps the skits inside a mock interview in which he plays Wing Commander Murial Volestrangler. Kudos for at least attempting something new, but this was a huge miss -- no pun intended, given Cleese's height. It only showed how much Cleese's comic talent lies in the past. A full stomach and head full of praise seem to have dull the comic wit.

I would have preferred a more serious approach to the Cleese's carrer -- talkabout "something completely different!" Getting to know Cleese -- avoiding both the maudlin and the pompous -- would have been a great adjunct to the Python material I already know and love. A portion of a show with Robin Skynner, his therapist/collaborator on Families and how to survive them was a good yet insufficient move in this direction. Those unfamiliar with Cleese could use a few clues about which pieces originated on "The Frost Show" or "Monty Python" or elsewhere.

These two disks neither function as a primer for those who are unfamiliar with Cleese (too many great bits are missing) nor does it provide useful and fascinating tidbits for fans. I'd give it a miss.

Read more
