Product Description

Gary Cole tried to walk the fine line between the bourgeois and the bohemian, only to find himself on a journey of self-discovery that challenged his most cherished convictions. Replete with good humor and dry wit, Artless is a commentary on censorship's many forms-both overt and subtle. Finally, it is the memoir of a man who, against all odds, deftly carved out a niche for himself in two seemingly diametrically opposed arenas.

At the apex of a brilliant career, Gary Cole was forced to re-evaluate his most fundamental beliefs after a Presidential appointment to the lead the grant side of the NEA was withdrawn. A Republican true believer and activist for decades, Cole learned that controversy surrounding his production of two plays, Straight and Poona the Fuckdog, led to the job's withdrawal.

Cole recounts the journey from his formative years at Berkeley campaigning for George H. W. Bush, to his days as an attorney at the CIA during the height of the Iran-Contra affair, along with his passion for theater as both actor and producer. He focuses on his efforts to weave these disparate threads into a cohesive tapestry and the culture wars that threatened to tear it apart.

Besides being finance chair of George W. Bush's Oregon campaign in 2000, Gary Cole co-founded two theater companies in Portland, Oregon, CoHo Productions and StageDirect. Born and raised in Chicago's suburbs and Stanford educated, Gary worked as a CIA attorney before practicing corporate law in Oregon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read It
I genuinely liked this book, in part, because I immediately connected with the author's voice. He is smart, passionate, and driven, which comes through his writing, and makes me forget that my political beliefs differ from his. I empathized with his struggle with government (no matter what side you identify with), and his struggle to find a place in theater. The structure was well done; I enjoyed his contrast in lifestyles, suit by day and bohemian fringe theater visitor by night (and later by day, too, as he builds his own theater venture). It's almost as though he leads a double life. And while you wouldn't think the left wing political types and the arts even going so well together, his life is proof that they can. Well, somewhat. I just moved to Portland and I enjoyed reading about his life here; some of his experiences differ from what I had heard about the city, and so it was a refreshing take.

I found it got a little sleepy in the middle-end as he bounces back and forth between opening a digital video production company and his life as a Republican. I his take on his own Jewish identity, or lack of, was interesting, and I wish it was a little more flushed out throughout the book, instead of used as a tie in at the end. I would also love to hear more of his thoughts about republicanism and the arts, as a reviewer had listed he went to an author reading and heard Cole talk of such issues. Overall, it was a great book about an interesting person.

4-0 out of 5 stars What do lawyers, politicians, and artisans all have in common?
Apparently, more than we generally think. Being a Republican in a highly Democrat environment, I can relate to a lot of what the author says. Having said that, I don't think you have to be a Republican to enjoy this book. I think Democrats and Independents would also find this book enjoyable and even enlightening. The author has a very pleasing narrative style. The author's past provides for some very intriguing stories. Lawyers, politicians, and artisans don't frequently interact together, and it's even stranger to find all three of these things in the same person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important Topics
I met the author at a talk-book signing in northern Vermont.

The most interesting thing he talked about was the idea that the Republican party should really be the party that supports the arts the best... to him, Republican meant the protection of personality liberty as well as personal responsibility.

Now, of course, the Republican party is more equated with social conservativism... telling people what to do and how to behave... the precise opposite of the personal liberty idea.

I am generally EXTREMELY anti-republican... this book, oddly, made me understand the problems with the party more clearly. If personal liberty and personal responsibility can once again become the main themes of what the party stands for... along with a bit more fiscal conservatism... well, I'd be less worried about republicans in power.

Anyway... good stuff, good issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-written, honest memoir
I had intended for this book to be summer reading later this year; instead, I picked it up on a Friday night and dropped everything else until I finished it that weekend. It's a well-written, entertaining, and insightful book, and other Oregonians (like me) will likely enjoy the local references and tales of the arts community.Well done!

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough topics handled extraordinarily well
Loyalty rewarded with betrayal. That seems simple enough and repeated hundreds of times in stories, yet this book is much more. The exploration of the true, current, and relevant events and themes is told not only as an excellent story but also in thought-provoking consideration of what can be and should be. Without being preachy, Gary presents difficult subjects in a way that is valuable for conservatives and liberals. It is the kind of book all citizens should read because it is about the meeting of culture and politics in the formation of the society we live in. It is the kind of book you want to read because it is an interesting story told exceptionally well. ... Read more

Product Description
When photographer Gary Harwood first stepped onto the K. W. Zellers family farm in Hartville, Ohio, to take pictures of the Mexican migrant workers there, he did not expect to find such a strong, tightly knit community. Over the next five years, he used his camera to study the lives and work of these migrants in their northeastern Ohio home. His artful photography captures the migrants' portraits and movingly conveys their great pride in work and family, their struggles and joys. Accompanying these vibrant photographs are revealing first-person narratives written by David Hassler. The voices of the migrants and community members are eloquent testaments to the importance of the culture, the resilience of the people, and the power of the place. In photos and stories, "Growing Season" celebrates the work and play and religious, medical, familial, and communal experiences of these workers - young, old, male, female - and offers readers a success story. A part of our American landscape, these people and the dedicated, caring group of volunteers who support them teach all of us about dignity and humanity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rehumanizing "illegal aliens"
This wonderful book is so needed in this era of immigrant-bashing.
I discovered "Growing Season" after a segment of it was excerpted in "The Sun" magazine. It's such a pleasure to hear the stories of people from Latin America and those who work with them, and how the so-called "problem" or "invasion" of immigrants has actually provided benefits for countless people on both sides of the border.
Citizens of the US, the world's superpower, should also keep in mind that it is policies that emanate from Wall Street and the Pentagon that have forced so many people to come here in the first place. We owe our Latin American brothers and sisters a warm welcome, even an apology, for the generations of exploiting their labor and resources (see books like "The Annexation of Mexico" by John Ross or "Turning the Tide" by Noam Chomsky").
I'm going to buy an extra copy of this book and send it to Representative Tom Tancredo, one of this nation's leading demagogues on the issue of immigration. ... Read more

Here, in all their glory, are over 150 breathtaking photographs of the magazine's most famous heavenly bodies. 3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
There isn't a table of contents, though there is an index in the back of the book. Perhaps Playboy knew that its list of celebrities would be largely unimpressive?

Maybe I'm just too young. Maybe the ubiquity of modern websites like SuicideGirls and TMZ (eager as they are to catch every upskirt and nip slip) have caused my generation to take Playboy's achievements for granted. Upon realizing how loosely they define 'celebrity', though, it's hard not to be disappointed.

But the photos themselves are nice enough, so to dismiss the book based on the lack of name recognition alone would be extremely naive. One is better off, though, with 50: The Playmate Book or The Complete Cenetrfolds, both of which showcase Playboy's real contribution to pop culture; the playmate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done and worth having
If you grew up in the 70's like I did and you were trying to project an image of cool and hip you read Playboy.Besides the great photography there were well written articles on politics and mens lifestyle issues that just weren't available anywhere else. And the special treat of having a glimpse of a favorite celeb partially nude made reading the articles less important for that particular issue and almost guaranteed it would become a collectable item. Many of the photos are mild to say the least by today's standards but still demonstrate the high quality photography that I believe always set Playboy apart from the rest.

This book is full of the same high quality images anyone who has followed the magazine would expect to see and some of us will even remember when some of the models first appeared.I was hoping to see a few more of my favorites, but hey there's always the next volume and as long as Mr. Hefner's name is on the masthead we'll have to trust him to pick the subjects and I'm very comfortable with that.If you ever liked Playboy and/or ever collected any of their compilation volumes this one is surely worth having.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed
The book promised more than it delivered. I am tempted to return for my money back.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice variety
I bought this for an early Christmas gift for my fiance' and we both love it.There's a sampling of all kinds in here - from young to older, earthy to, well, Pamela, and dated to modern.

3-0 out of 5 stars What there is is very good, but incomplete
This is a high quality book with many beautiful images. While there are a number of women here that are most famous for being Playmates, they are also women who legitimately had some celebrity outside of the magazine (movies and/or TV).But as others have said, there are many "A List" celebrities that didn't make it into this volume. We can only hope they'll be a "Volume 2" in the future. ... Product Description
Following Playboy's celebrated fiftieth anniversary Photographs and Cartoons comes an arresting retrospective of Helmut Newton, one of the 20th century's most influential photographers. Renowned for his carefully composed, almost cinematic shots, Newton's signature style makes for a dramatic counterpoint to the Playboy nudes known the world over. Collected between shimmering metallic covers are more than 150 color and black and white photographs. Here we see Newton's take on Playmates in Los Angeles, Nastassja Kinski playing out a fantasy with a doppelgänger doll, a Lolita-esque travelog, and more. With a foreword by Hugh M. Hefner, an introduction by celebrated writer Walter Abish, and an afterword by Playboy's director of photography for the past 30 years, Gary Cole, Playboy: Helmut Newton is the definitive book of Newton nudes. ... HI!

I am an enormous fan of Bette Davis and I don't think anything new is revealed here. Having read multiple bios on her plus her own books and interviews I think as much as could ever be expected about her, good or bad has been covered. I feel that books like this , including her daughter's reveal only private moments where nobody is at their best. Also, it seems theses are written to make some bucks and stroke these insecure egos. After all they struck when Bette was ill or dead. Pretty safe if you ask me. Rita could have done a lot better as well.

Product Description
This political volume analyzes the academic work of G. D. H. Cole and the political tensions of the early-20th-century National Guilds League in England, an organization that attempted to unite a socialist movement divided between those who used orthodox Marxist doctrine to argue for a centralized state and those who believed that a highly decentralized state was necessary. Cole's doctrine, strategy, and impact are examined to illustrate the important economic debate about the alternatives socialism presented. The implications of this argument are discussed to reveal how the lapsed values of individuality, creativity, and freedom from control can be renewed in contemporary life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition to the Adoption Literature
This book is a fine one to have in one's library for three reasons:
1. It treats the effects of adoption equally on the three family members who lose one another: the mother, the father and the individual who is adopted. It makes the parallels between the three family members very clearly.
2. It gathers together a great deal of information on adoption effects from a variety of sources, and offers opinions and information on a wide variety of adoption-related issues and topics.
3. It is well written.

This book will be of use to all who have an honest and serious interest in the effects of adoption on all members of the natural family. Because of its balanced viewpoint, it is particularly appropriate for prospective adopters, social workers and other adoption facilitators. They should understand that adoption is not a happy event for any members of the natural family.

Many of the essays are suitable as short pieces to offer to others in discussions about particular aspects of adoption's effects. All the essays are thoughtful and considered. They express sometimes terrible truths in calm language, and thus may have more effect on those who don't want to hear than some more radical treatments of the same topics may have. This is an excellent addition to the literature on the effects of adoption.
