4-0 out of 5 stars El libro que usamos en «AP»
I'm using "Abriendo paso: gramática" in my AP Spanish class and I really like it. It doesn't use a lot of color or pictures, but that's OK with me. It lays out the grammar rules (in English with sample sentences and translations) and gives exercises to aid in understanding. We're using this book in conjunction with "Una vez más" and I must say they compliment eachother nicely. Abriendo paso describes rules in English and gives translations of example sentences, so it clears up confusion easily. However, there are usually only two or three "ejercisios" per rule. This is where "Una vez más" comes in. It also has a few exercises for each rule, so it's nice to combine the two. However "Una vez más" has no English so it can add to confusion (on the other hand it's good practice!) ... Read more

In "the first true biography of Foster in more than sixty years and the only good one . . . Emerson lays out this complex story with grace, originality, dispatch, and insight" ("Robert Christgau, "The Los Angeles Times"). 34 illustrations.Amazon.com Review
Ken Emerson's thickly textured narrative featuresan affectionate examination of American music's diverse strands aswell as a perceptive portrait of the nation's first greatsongwriter. Stephen Foster (1826-64) was born in Pittsburgh andvisited the South only briefly, yet songs like "My Old KentuckyHome" and "Oh! Susanna" drew on black Southern cultureto create a uniquely American form of popular music. The author isclear-sighted about the complex blend of racism and genuine compassionthat infused Foster's "blackface" compositions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Doo Dah is the BEST BIOGRAPHY OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!
If you haven't read Doo Dah, buy it today!!!! Doo Dah was the best book that I have ever read in my entire life.Unfortunately, the book is not as good as the writer is handsome, and if it was it would be on the best seller list, and I know because he is my uncle. So, show your support of American culture and buy this stupendous biography, by the Master writer, the all time best, the one and only Ken Emerson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bow-wow!
This is another boonie dog book review from Wolfie and Kansas.Ken Emerson's book "Doo-dah!Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture" is well-written and informative. This is a "life and times" book, rather than a narrowly focused biography. However, the times of Stephen Foster, and the social and cultural history which Emerson discusses, are, like Foster's music, generally more interesting than the sometimes racist and alcoholic Foster himself.

Our one complaint about "Doo-dah!" is the short shrift Mr. Emerson gives to one of Stephen Foster's biggest hits in 1857, a song entitled "Old Dog Tray".We would have like to have learned more about this song.Foster's minstrel songs were performed by white men in blackface. Was "Old Dog Tray" performed by humans in dogface? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars mildly confrontational
I first read this book 15 years, or so, ago in my doctors office. I searched for months to find a copy for myself, and finally found one in a small bookstore in Solvang, CA. I came across it recently and decided to purchase 3 more copies to give to friends and relatives, if I could FIND 3 copies anywhere. This book is a gem. I was happy to pass it on to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Many short, powerful and thought provoking statements.Beautiful illustrations.I'd suggest it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in gold!
ILLUMINATIONS is 96 pages of inspired, joyous, loving insights. Each page contains a postage stamp sized abstract illustration accompanying a poetic affirmation which is only one or two sentences in length. This may notseem like much, but I just adore this book for its simple directness!Ikeep this book near where I work, and give myself a treat by simply openingit to some random page -- it's better than getting a fortune from a fortunecookie! As I do that right now, I read, "It's easier to pretend thatyou don't know what to do than to do what you need to do.You know what todo."

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful thoughts for meditation and self acceptance.
This little book is chock-full of spiritual reminders and thoughts for meaningful meditations. It is geared toward working on self acceptance in a busy, demanding world. The artwork in it inspires the eye, while the wordsinspire the soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life...
I think I have given away a couple dozen copies of this book to people I care about. On the surface, that may sound a bit obsessive, but with it's simple subtle phrases, it changed my life. It walks you through remembering all the things that most of us desire and wish to have in our lives. The emphasis is on love, kindness, joy, and treating everyone with respect and compassion, most especially ourselves. ... Read more

Product Description
The 14th Gemina Martia Victrix Legion was the most celebrated unit of the early Roman Empire–a force that had been wiped out under Julius Caesar, reformed, and almost wiped out again. After participating in the a.d. 43 invasion of Britain, the 14th Legion achieved its greatest glory when it put down the famous rebellion of the Britons under Boudicca. Numbering less than 10,000 men, the disciplined Roman killing machine defeated 230,000 rampaging rebels, slaughtering 80,000 with only 400 Roman losses–an accomplishment that led the emperor Nero to honor the legion with the title "Conqueror of Britain." In this gripping book, second in the author’s definitive histories of the legions of ancient Rome, Stephen Dando-Collins brings the 14th Legion to life, offering military history aficionados a unique soldier’s-eye view of their tactics, campaigns, and battles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
I've read almost all of his books and this is the one that I keep coming back to.I've read it three or four times and enjoy it again each time. It's nicely written and extremely interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nero's 14th legion
I have enjoyed the many kinds of books bought on Amazon.com and I like the history books the best. I will continue to purchase my books from Amazon. Thank you

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this Book and Author
Avoid any book by this author. They are terrible. They do not give you a historically accurate picture of the legions. Dando-Collins believes he makes his book more readible by using modern military ranks -- but alas he is truly ignorant of Roman History if he things calling a Legate a General or Brigadier General conveys the accuracy of what a Legate's duties were in the Roman Military. He just muddles the picture. I suspect he does not truly understand the actual function of many of these Roman military titles and by using modern equivalents he loses all sense of how the Roman Army was built and how it functioned. It is sad that someone actually published this garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable History
Dando-Collins has found the right blend: entertaining and informative. If you're a history buff, this book will be hard to put down. You get the facts, but you also get an enjoyable read. You will feel like you are on the ground with legions of Rome!

3-0 out of 5 stars Some research is excellent, some questionable...
Having been thoroughly drawn into "Ceasar's Legion," I found myself chomping at the bit to strap on my caligulae and read a similar account of glorious conquest and good old gritty Roman perseverance to see the campaign through.I'm sorry to say that I fear not all of Mr. Collins' research efforts seem to live up to that standard.

While I have no doubt Collins has done more than his fare share of reasearch to write these books, one area he seemed to neglect is the chapter dealing with the Varus Disaster.Collins gives what I feel is a pseudo-historical account concluding that the 17th, 18th, and 19th Legions were annihilated in the middle of the Tuetoburg forest, making a last stand in a hastily built fortification.

He completely failed to mention anything about the overwhelming archaeological evidence found at the base of the Kalkriese berg by Tony Clunn and German archaeologists in the mid 1990's.Nor does he mention the outlying archaeological evidence east of the Kalkriese bottelneck, in the eastern gap of the Wiehengebrige Ridge near Ostercappeln where the remnants of the Roman Army broke out of the forest before finally being destroyed a day later at Kalkriese.Nor does he cite the scatter pattern of artifacts west of Kalkriese which indicate that some of the Roman army broke through the ambush and made a run for it before most were likely mopped up by their pursuers. The Germans even built their own earthen and wicker fortifications there indicating that Arminius had likely planned all along to drag the Romans all the way through his Tuetoburg gauntlet before delivering the coup-de-grace at Kalkriese.

Having read both classical and contemporary literature on this subject, and spent three days traversing the battlefield myself, I was very much looking forward to a fresh take on the facts. But the facts, at least in this portion, were ignored.

Product Description
In the late English Renaissance, writers as varied as Shakespeare, Hooker, Bacon, and Hobbes problematically engaged the traditional idea of order and helped define a new, secular one. In this intellectual history, Collins treats the idea of order as a dynamic concept which incorporates changing views of self, society, and the relationship between private and public during these years. He sees this as a process of meaning redefinition that simultaneously heightens and comes to terms with the dissolution of the old idea of order; the self-consciously articulated concept of the representative sovereign state replaces the vision of the divine cosmos as the medium for identity and social order. Collins draws on a wide range of political, literary, and other contemporary writings to chart this process--now associated with secularization--providing a provocative analysis of social and intellectual change. ... Product Description
In the pages of this book, Francis Costello allows Michael Collins to speak in his own words. He traces Collins's career from his school days to his tragic death at the age of 31, through a series of edited extracts from Collins's writings, speeches, letters and memoranda. Using a chronological narrative, Costello provides linking text to set the context for each extract from Collins. He draws his material from sources as diverse as printed books, the Collins papers in the National Library of Ireland, the Military History Bureau of the Department of Defence, Dail Reports, contemporary newspaper accounts and the private papers of many who came into contact with Collins. The Michael Collins revealed in these pages is a complex, multi-faced man: politician; head of intelligence; Minister for Finance; friend and lover. Getting behind the myth, this book shows us the real Collins - in his own words. ... Read more
